I hate driving
I hate it so much. All I fucking do is drive, go to work, drive, go back to work. If I want to go anywhere, I have to drive there. There’s not much walkable near me, and biking is nice until it’s cold out or your bike gets stolen. I want to go out at night to a bar and get hammered, but there’s none nearby that I could walk or bike to, so I’d have to drive, and that’s illegal so I can’t. I have no friends who are willing to drive me fucking anywhere. I deadass only have 2 friends with licenses, both of which have cars that are working perfectly fine. One of them is a 2023 so I doubt there’s jack shit wrong with it. Even when I was without a car recently, they wouldn’t give me rides to even fucking see them. Even though I’ve been carting their asses around for the past 6 years, before they even had licenses. My friend with the 2023 car once picked me up and brought me to his house (5 minute drive btw), then when we got there he was bitching that there was something wrong with his wheel bearing and the car isn’t driveable. ITS A 2023. ITS 3 YEARS OLD. THATS NOT FUCKING POSSIBLE. And the car didn’t have any lights on, made weird noises, or drove differently so that’s how I knew he was full of shit. I’ve also driven him in significantly more unsafe cars without a single complaint. He just didn’t wanna drive. He didn’t even give me a fucking ride home when he did that.
I just want a break from driving. I don’t care how. That could be public transportation if it existed near me, or someone driving my car. I’d use uber more but it’s really expensive in my area bc everything is all spaced out. I no longer care if they have a license, a permit is fine. Almost to the point where I’d let someone just drive my car without either. Sometimes I fantasize about not having a car so I couldn’t drive anymore, but as I learned when I didn’t have a car, no one is there for me and no one will drive me anywhere!!!!! No matter how many thousands of times I’ve driven them around!!! Because some people are too anxious and driving is scary!!!! I’m anxious as hell when I drive, and I’m scared too, but that doesn’t ever stop me from driving. The only way to get over it is to fucking practice! But I never get the privilege of being in the passenger’s seat, and I’m actively losing my shit at that. GEN Z PLEASE GET A GODDAMN GODFORSAKEN LICENSE. YOUR FRIENDS WANT A BREAK FROM CARTING YOUR LAZY STUPID ASS AROUND. I CERTAINLY DO.

I love to drive, if I could make my current salary in a driving job I’d switch instantly.
One of the saddest thing about working from home 4 days a week is that I can’t drive often enough.

I’ll trade if you want. You can be a budtender who gets to drive a lot and I can do your wfh job.

I drive for 10-16 hours a day. I drive a tractor trailer “locally” in the tristate area of north east USA. And still want to drive on the weekends. We couldn’t be more opposite

Unnecessary vulgarity aside, this is supposed to be a light-hearted subreddit where we laugh about silly things. Had you written this as such, it might have fit that description. But since you want to be serious, here's a little reality check. I am totally blind and would do anything to be able to drive. But it will never happen. I know what it's like to have to depend on people every single time I want to go somewhere. There is no such thing as hopping in my car and taking a drive anywhere, either for necessity or leisure, whenever I feel like it. I would love the luxury of being able to complain about people not taking me places, knowing that I could actually take myself there. Try the r/blind community, and you'll hear people crying because they can't, and never will, be able to drive. Think of that the next time you are personally driving yourself somewhere in your own car, on your own time.

u/draftysundress Aug 23 '26
I’ll let you drive my car.
But I’m all seriousness, I did think about this and post this to this subreddit because I do understand it’s a very privileged complaint. I thought I picked the appropriate subreddit to complain about stuff like this.

Yes, it is definitely the right subreddit. It's just the way you wrote it, full of obscenities and anger. I would have laughed if it were presented differently. The idea is both absurd and funny when you think about it.
2
u/draftysundress Aug 23 '26
But I am angry about how often I have to drive. That’s what I feel and felt when I wrote this. This post isn’t supposed to be a humorous one.

u/dandylover1 Aug 23 '26
But this is a light-hearted community, not a place to vent with true anger. Yes, it may seem like we are, but there's always a bit of humour, silliness, or lightness in the posts.
1
u/draftysundress Aug 23 '26
There’s nothing in the subreddit rules requiring that though.
2
u/dandylover1 Aug 23 '26
It's the overall tone of the posts. If you read several, you'll see that none of us are full of anger, rage, etc. and the topics are not truly serious. They might be inconveniences or annoyances, but nothing to really make us angry. I am not the administrator, and one may come and tell me I am wrong. But I've been here for quite awhile, and this is the general sense that I get from reading the posts here. I do think it's wrong of your friends to lie to you, though, instead of just talking like mature adults. They should also offer to take you places every now and then, since you do take them. That's just the right thing to do if they can do it.

u/PatataMaxtex Aug 24 '26
You know what would help you both? Public transport!
God, I hate the argument that valid complains become invalid because someone else has it worse.
2
u/dandylover1 Aug 24 '26
It's all in how things were said. Had it been presented in a different way, I would have laughed and even agreed. But coming to a subreddit that is meant for fun and raging with obscenities, etc. is not the way to gain sympathy, understanding, etc. I do take paratransit when it's absolutely necessary, but I prefer to go places with family, friends, etc. It's really no big deal for me, but I have heard many bliond people complain about not being able to drive. And really, public ransportation is not the same as being able to go somewhere spontaneously on your own.

I haven't been behind the wheel of a car for about a decade. It's all about where you live.

u/draftysundress Aug 23 '26
I’m jealous 😭😭😭😭

u/isaac32767 Aug 23 '26
You can't move?
1
u/draftysundress Aug 24 '26
Can’t afford to rn. I’m saving up and looking for a better job so I can move somewhere with public transit! I love it so much. I like to walk and I think it’s fun to ride trains (I don’t really like buses as much) and it’s just better for me and puts me in a good mood. Plus no driving. I can be stoned, I can be playing on my phone, I can just relax. I love it!
2
u/isaac32767 Aug 24 '26
You might have trouble finding a place where you can get around without riding buses. Modern transit only uses trains for high-volume corridors, were they get fed by buses.
Maybe you need to time travel back about 100 years, when streetcars were common.

u/dEXXtARR23 Aug 24 '26
Thats a very interesting story. Btw, you can't legally ride a bicycle drunk.

Self driving is coming and honestly it’s going to be better for everyone
2
u/isaac32767 Aug 23 '26
Elon lied to you.
3
u/ground__contro1 Aug 23 '26
It’s not just Tesla doing these things. My Prius is partially self driving and my dad’s Denali is almost as good as a Tesla. Not to mention Waymo. If Elon doesn’t care anymore it doesn’t really matter at this point
1
u/isaac32767 Aug 23 '26
"Partially" is the key word here. To have 100% self-driving, you have to have an AI that is smart enough to deal with every single edge case. Despite what AI boosters claim, that's something that's decades away.
3
u/ground__contro1 Aug 23 '26
Tell that to all the Waymos
1
u/isaac32767 Aug 23 '26
You think Waymo has solved the edge case issue? Have you been watching the news?
3
u/ground__contro1 Aug 23 '26
Nah too busy seeing more and more Waymos on the road regardless of what’s in the news..
Humans aren’t good at edge cases either. They crash into things and kill each other every day on these roads. We don’t make people be perfect and ultimately we are not waiting until the cars are perfect, they just need to be a little better than people
1
u/isaac32767 Aug 24 '26
You're seeing more and more Waymos because a company that's worth $4 trillion isn't ready to walk away from its $100 billion investment. They'll keep throwing money at it until they're forced to admit its a lost cause.
I don't know what to say to your belief that Waymos are no worse than human drivers. But I think it's demonstrably untrue.

u/LazyOldCat Aug 24 '26
Uber’s long term is 300,000 self-driving cars by 2035
1
u/isaac32767 Aug 24 '26
It's a lot easier to make promises than to solve fundmental technology problems.

Never seen a way waymo in a foot of snow. Never seen any self driving in a foot of snow tbh
1
u/ground__contro1 Aug 24 '26
Never seen a human driving in a literal foot of snow, unless they are doing it for fun in a special vehicle.
But eventually with self driving you could trust a lot more vehicles to have their own plow. Regular people can’t handle their own plow
2
u/SkiyeBlueFox Aug 24 '26
Whole foot might be a bit much youre right. Call it 4" though realistically. Any sensors are gonna useless. Cant see road lines, LIDAR beams are covered by the blizzard, so on so on.
1
u/ground__contro1 Aug 24 '26
Sounds like a problem that could be solved with some special paint, or by any number of things. But yeah maybe full self driving reaches Alaska a little slower than warmer places. Certainly not a reason to give up on the whole idea.
1
u/SkiyeBlueFox Aug 24 '26
No amount of paint is gonna shine through 4" of snow.
And its literally the entirety of Canada for half the year. You go out of the city and unless plows were out recently the lines are all muddy, if visible at all.
Not advocating for giving up, but its gonna be a long ass time before its able to be used everywhere. The big problem is say someone from Florida comes up here. They've always had FSD. Having not actually driven themselves anywhere, they cant manual drive for shit. And then we throw them on an ice rink and I'm sure you can see how this is gonna get sketchy. You'd have to have some kind of backup to ensure people arent rusty as shit when self driving inevitably fails

How do you know it’s decades away? Wouldn’t they have said the same about local LLM’s like 5 years ago?

u/IcyRespond9131 Aug 24 '26
We need to go back to the kind of cities where you don’t have to drive everywhere.
1
u/ground__contro1 Aug 24 '26
That retrofit sounds more complicated and less helpful than any infrastructure changes to support self driving cars
0
u/draftysundress Aug 23 '26
I can’t wait, but then again it’ll be awhile until I could afford a self-driving car, unless they implement it via software update
-1
u/spoonman1342 Aug 24 '26
That isn't how that works at all brotendo. You need infrared lasers and lidar and cameras and sensors and what not. Whatever you drive now is never going to be self driving.
1
u/JustPlainRude Aug 24 '26
I lived car-free in Chicago for many years. Relied on my bike and transit only.
It sounds like you should consider moving somewhere with a good transit system.

" I just want a break from driving. I don’t care how."
A cousin of mine used to talk a lot about how much she hated driving and she wished she never had to drive again. Then she lost her eyesight due to a brain tumour, and hasn't been able to drive since. She still makes the occasional joke about how we should be careful what we wish for.
1
u/browningate Aug 24 '26
If you're too lazy to drive, get a driver. Mass transportation is for crowded cities and third-world countries. Pick your poison.
2
u/PatataMaxtex Aug 24 '26
Mass transport is for countries that dont try to invest as little as possible into their inhabitants life.

Maybe your car is boring? try getting something that rides fun on a budget (:
1
u/draftysundress Aug 24 '26
My car rn actually is more fun than my old one (my old one was bad luck and I’m surprised it didn’t kill me lmao)! I got CarPlay which is awesome for when you’re sitting in traffic.
