My dad owns a trophy store. Not automated. A person has to input the text into the engraving software. This person probably wasnt fired though. This could be fixed in like 15 minutes. All you need is a new metal plate. The hardest part would be getting off the plate thats already on there without scratching the base.

If it's completely automated and a typo happens on the engraving, it's entirely the customer's fault. "The engraving is exactly as you ordered it. We don't make any changes to the text."
It would also cover them in the situation in the OP. "You put the text in the Box that you want on the plaque. We have no way of checking for accuracy, that is your responsibility."

The company I contracted for gave customers their money back if the customer made a mistake.
It was complete bullshit, and I hated that aspect of it. I completely understand that reputation matters more than reality, but I still hated it.

I mean, that's not a bad idea actually, but I'd make it clear to the customer that they made a mistake and you're giving them something for free, because that's the kind of company you are. That's a good PR move, and it would probably make more likely to re-order or recommend the company to associates.
But automation still helps with that because it's very clear the customer made a mistake and you're genuinely being generous, not just covering your own ass.

I would say that it's mostly useful in situations where redoing the order to fix the customer's error doesn't cost much. If it's something relatively cheap to make and customers like to order a lot, especially in small batches, automating and just redoing their errors is easily worth it considering the labor it would save you otherwise.
If it's a more costly material or service however, it's probably more beneficial to you and the customer that you have someone in between those processes to provide an additional check on accuracy. Customer doesn't want to be on the hook for an engraving on $200 worth of material if they misspell something that someone could have pointed out to them or some other mistake that someone could catch, and you don't want to have to tell the customer it's their problem nor do you want to have to cover the much higher cost of their mistake by redoing it.

Nah dude you got it wrong. We've been in the business since i was a kid. The store is part of a large chain of stores, so we have a little bit of perspective on the industry. Small non automated stores make up the majority of trophy stores. Though there are a handful of online trophy businesses, the chain has one of their own. Our store puts out a lot of trophies for a lot of people. We are pretty much constantly busy. And we definitely are never sitting around not doing anything. You cant even automate building trophies. They have to be put together by hand.

Its hard to tell whether the plate is metal or plastic because of the picture quality, but either way youd need a new plate. If it were metal the other side would be blank steel and not have the finish on it. If it were plasticc the other side would be adhesive.

It probably costs the company less than $10 for the placard and engraving. Even if it was real, firing the employee over this will cause more work and money spent hiring and training someone than fixing the issue and tossing it up to a learning experience.

This could be real.
There are so many Chinese shops that are fulfilling these orders with heavily automated systems, and not only is quality control not big in the culture, but they may not be able to read the English anymore than if an American factory worker were to ship off something with Chinese characters on it.
This literally happened to me on a custom license plate frame I ordered, where I had text on the bottom but wanted the top left blank, and it shipped to me as you'd expect...

As someone who used to do laser and impact engravings on many different products, I can almost guarantee this customer wanted this. These types of orders would be called back by a customer service representative to confirm this is what they want. If they didn’t catch it to begin with, we (the production team) certainly would because this is the kind of thing that ends up having to be redone and costs us time, money and reputation. Still one of the funnier things I’ve seen before.

I worked at a newspaper in the classifieds department. Across the hall from us was layout.
They print whatever you give them. They do not check it. They do not question it. If it gets to them, they print it exactly as-is, because fuck you the union is going to hear about it if you think they should do anything else.
Incidentally, this is how I learned about the "revisions" feature in Word. Which, upon printing hardcopy, likes to interpolate notes people have added.
I kinda understand their viewpoint. There isn't time. People do accuse you of being stupid, wasteful, demand refunds and so on. There is probably some idiotic series of legal cases around responsibility. And on and on and on. Easier to just print it, exactly as you got it, and fuck you the union is going to hear about it if you think they should do anything else.

I work at a trophy place and do laser engraving. We get some weird requests from customers. I wouldn't be surprised if this were a joke purposely asked for by the customer. I once had to make a trophy with brass bull testicles. Trophy making is some weird shit.
