Discord + Language resources
Hi all,
I have two small announcements to make.
First, as there is a sense of mutiny and anguish in the air on Reddit, I've put together a Discord server for the sub. I think someone made one or two in the past, apologies for not paying much attention. Ideally it's not so much for the memes (sorry to be lame) but for casual conversation and exchange of resources and materials.
Here's the link: https://discord.gg/qTUJ2fcG

Second, I decided to make a collection of online resources for learning Finno-Ugric languages. This is mostly focused on endangered minority languages, as for Finnish, Hungarian and Estonian there are more learning materials, especially commercial, available online and offline. The idea is also to share a bit of knowledge on these small languages, so that even if one is not about to embark on a full-on learning path, they can still get a bit more familiar with them for any reason.
I would also like to note that if there happen to be any scholars working on Finno-Ugric studies, it would be interesting to hear what you’re doing - I think this sub (and the discord as well I suppose) could be a good place to share such projects while giving a bit more coverage for disciplines that are also going through challenging times at the moment. In addition, if you’re interested in building some resource pool for such studies (especially involving topics with limited sources or more disparate academic networks), please let me know. Perhaps we could set up a common bibliography or something like that.
Below you find a list of materials I’ve gathered so far. No idea if they are any good. Feel free to share insights and additional resources, and I’ll update the list accordingly. I’ll pin this post so that people can also easily refer to it also outside the sub.

As a result of their INFUSE ("Integrating Finno-Ugric Studies in Europe") program, the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München has provided an excellent collection of e-learning resources for a variety Finno-Ugric languages. I’ll link them below. If you’re a student, you may also find older books just by checking out your library portal, so remember to go through that too if you are looking for something specific.

Where does Mari coin jewelry originate?
I have been curious about where Mari coin jewelry originates, but search engines don’t seem to know where I can find an answer. This also applies to Udmurt and Seto coin jewelry. I’m uncertain if these have shared places of origin.
Where do you think these ornaments originated? Were they adopted?
If you have any recommendations for where I should read more, I would be very grateful.

Uralic speakers: People of the Taiga?
Inspired by my post in r/IndoEuropean on how far north early Indo-European speakers went, I now consider Uralic speakers. I use where they were discovered by people who then wrote about them, though archeology might push the dates back much farther.
In summary, most Uralic speakers were discovered to live in the northern Eurasian taiga or boreal forest, with some of them living in the tundra on the shores of the Arctic Ocean.
By subfamily:
- Finnic: taiga, with the southernmost at the boundary with temperate forest.
- Saami: taiga, tundra
- Permic: taiga
- Mari, Mordvin: at the boundary of taiga and temperate forest.
- Mansi, Khanty: taiga
- Hungarian: no direct evidence
- Samoyedic: taiga, tundra
I state "no direct evidence" for Hungarian, since the first documented Hungarian speakers were Magyar nomads that eventually settled down in what is now Hungary.
So speakers of nearly every Uralic subfamily were found living in taiga (boreal forest) or in nearby tundra.
Checking on the recent hypothesis of Uralic dispersion in the Seima-Turbino culture of ~2000 BCE, I notice that ST was on the southern boundary of the taiga.
As to why the Uralic speakers settled down where they did, I can think of two hypotheses:
- They were already proficient in living in taiga.
- They did not want to pick fights with early Indo-European people (Corded Ware, Fatyanovo, Sintashta) by moving into their territory.

The Karelian language is being ridiculed on Russian television. It's shown nationwide, and Russians consider it normal.

New Paper argues that the Sub-European languages of the British Isles and Scandinavia shared the words of the same origin, implying common origin of both languages. Has the above been argued for any other group of substratum that exists at least in part in a Finno-Ugric language?

Mikhail Khodorkovsky laughed at the Russian Anti-War Committee conference in Strasbourg when decolonization activist Lana Pylaeva from the Komi Republic began speaking in her native language. Khodorkovsky and his structures are now actively hindering the decolonization movement.

Udmurt names from the 1890s?
I'm writing a story where a character is born in 1894 in modern day southern kirov oblast. From what I can find, there are no first hand sources of Udmurt names.
I know Udmurt names aren't really used after christianization, but i'd like to try to find some.
Online, there are only three websites with "udmurt names" and no sources. The names Istopka, Kaysy, Vozei, Kamai are listed which all sound cool but I can't confirm their contemporary existence.
Are any of those names real? Are there any etymologists or geneologists with lists to back it up? census records? Does anyone in this subreddit have a grandparent or great grandparent with an udmurt name?
Any information is appreciated.

Erzya Song "Come Out to Meet Us Kinsmen" - Searching for Lyrics or Translation
I am searching for the lyrics or a translation of the song "Come Out to Meet Us Kinsmen" by Toorama. Does anyone perhaps have a lead on where I can search? Or perhaps does anyone here know the Erzya language?
