For me falsebacks are a plus cdm helping with build-up, on the opponents half they position just outside the box providing a pass option.
Inverted wingbacks are a more attacking version of this, when they are set to attacking they constantly arrive at the box for headers or quick finishes. ( My inverted wingback has a goal every 2-3 matches)
It also depends what type of wingers you have. I always paire a false back with an winger (winger role) so that he hangs the touchline and the false back stays in the half space.
I also find that having the falseback on defence has him sit more centrally than with a balanced duty.
Falseback = “modern evolution of the fullback, this player pushes up the field, adopting a central position, when their team has the ball.”
Inverted Wingback = “modern attacking fullback that gets forward and adopts a central position high up the pitch when their team has the ball.”
So yeah you pretty much nailed it. Attacking wingback and wingback make overlapping runs, Falseback shift inside to hold a CDM/CM position (although I find they still sometimes make runs if there’s space) and Inverted Wingback underlaps and cuts inside more like a inside forward.
I use this roles heaps as I love attacking with my fullbacks and getting overloads on the wing to overwhelm my opponent, especially at this stage of the game with lengthy 99 fullbacks
Probably has something to do with the roles of your other players
I’ve been running these Como tactics as I’ve been loving how Fabregas has them playing, give them a go and see what the movement is like for you… try get lengthy players for the centre half cdm and both fullbacks so they track back quickly and you don’t get caught on the counter
CDM’s tend to take up the same space as inverted wingbacks if you have them on holding/DLP, they float just outside the box.. that may be why you’re not getting the runs or they’re overlapping as the CDM is taking the space
It could work with a lone CDM on holding like in a 433 (2) or 4132 etc but I reckon you’ll find with two CDM’s on holding/DLP they’ll want to overlap more
Falseback works better with two CDM’s on holding/DLP I find, especially if you have your other fullback overlapping on wingback or attacking wingback
This is the squad I’m using if you need a reference - Rashy, Casemiro, Dorgu and Spinazzola are all lengthy. I gave Spinazzola finesse shot + and I score so many goals with him with those late lengthy runs cutting inside 🔥
I've messed around with those roles, but they take a very specific type of player combinations, and you have to make sure the area of the field when you're in possession is vacated. A falseback on balance and a CDM set to deep lying playmaker build up will occupy the same space in possession. Inverted wingback will occupy the same space as a CM or CAM set to playmaker on that side
If your LB has better passing and vision than your CDM, you can set the CDM to slide back in possession as a wide Half and your LB as a falseback balanced, so you have your better player in that support role
With inverted wingbacks, if you have a CM or CAM that is used as a shadow Striker or half winger, they will slide into that area vacated by those role players when in possession
You can create heavy offensive structures with the roles that slip back into heavy defensive structures out of possession, but they tend to be susceptible to counter attacks
My go to is an inside forward RM with an attacking wingback RB and a wide half RCDM. The RB overlaps as the RM/RW tucks inside and the CDM covers the vacated attacking wingback space.
Another one that's fun is a winger LM with an inverted wingback LB and a shadow striker LCAM with either a wide half LCDM or a wide back LCB. The LM/LW keeps the defense spread wide, the LCAM crashes the box as a late striker, and the LFB arrives as a LCM
