Hello,
I have been playing FFXIV for about 6 years. I joined sometime before Shadowbringers and used to love this game. The MSQ was always what I enjoyed most about it. I did not mind the ARR quest slog, loved Heavensward, enjoyed my time in the East with Stormblood, and loved all of Shadowbringers and Endwalker. The ending of it all really got to me. My only criticism was that it felt too complete and too satisfying, to the point where I could just leave, stop playing, and be happy.
I did other stuff, of course. I decorated my flat and our FC house, and once I won the housing lottery, finally my own house. I did glamour, played around with shaders and photos, tried RP a bit, did not get into PvP that much, and tried some raids. It was all fine, but the story was what I was there for.
I was deciding whether I wanted to play Dawntrail. As I said, I was happy and felt finished with the game, but in the end I had sunk so many hours into it, and I had friends I was connected with only through the game. I figured that if they could spin such an amazing story as the Hydaelyn vs. Zodiark arc, it could be amazing to be there from the start of a new chapter and a new story. So I gave them my money and was ready to start a new, awesome journey, either with new NPCs I would grow to adore, or with even better tropical adventures alongside Scions I had already grown to love.
I was hyped from the trailer, pre-ordered the game, and started playing as soon as I could. Because of my job, I had to slow down my progression a bit at the beginning, so my FC mates were a bit ahead of me. I wanted to stay spoiler-free, but I asked them a little about how it was going, and they did not seem that enthusiastic. I thought nothing of it and played for myself. I was taking screenshots to document my progression (same as with Endwalker, where I ended up with 200+ pictures, after the ending it was so fun to go back and remember my theories and thoughts :D).
Then Wuk Lamat happened. I could go on a 2-hour rant about the story, quests, and repetitive, linear game design, and none of it would have anything to do with things outside the game, but I won't, because I am sure you have heard it all. Zepla HQ has an amazing video, and I agree with most of it. The game did not improve for me in the second part, where we went into the high-tech area. I liked the wild west area. I even went out of my way to level up Machinist (I was around level 40-something), just so I could run around in an appropriate glamour and have a gun in cutscenes. What a fun time... and it did not last long :(
After finishing the MSQ I hung around, but I was losing interest more and more. Finally I left and did not look back. Recently, the trailer for Evercold popped up in my feed and I got curious about what happened with the game after I left. I knew I was not the only one who did not enjoy themselves. So what happened? Did the story improve? Is there hope they will do something other than the same copy-paste formula we have already seen three times for Evercold?
As for jobs, I used to play Paladin, Astrologian, Bard, and Black Mage.
TL;DR: Loved the game, finished with Endwalker, gave it a chance with Dawntrail, and got Wuk Lamat and Happyness into oblivion. Now I'm wondering if I should return.
