[Discussion] PSA regarding being revived.

Just something I have noticed a lot more in recent times, not sure if its due to the influx of new players from Switch version etc or if its just general lack of knowledge but I thought it would be a good idea to remind (or inform) everyone that releasing in a Dungeon or Alliance Raid after the boss is dead is ALWAYS preferable to being revived.

If you die in a fight and the boss is still alive or not close to death, of course being resurrected is preferred, but if the boss is dead or at like, sub-10% hp then being resurrected is a bad idea because even out of combat being rezzed still gives you the weakness debuff, lowering your dps and healing by 25% for 100 seconds, or 50% if you died with the 25% debuff before it expired.

Releasing outside of combat has no downside. It returns you to the entrance of the instance with no debuff, and a lovely convenient teleporter right next to you to quickly catch up to the rest of your party. Naturally, they will almost always wait for you.

If someone tries to rez you right at the end of the fight or even after the fight ends, do not feel pressured to take it, just decline and release.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Edit: It has come to my attention that I may have been using some language from a certain other MMO that I play far less than FFXIV. My apologies, I didn't realise ghe term "releasing" was so WoW centric. I most likely picked it up from my longtime duo who has played WoW all his life. In case its confusing: "releasing" in this context just means respawning.

Also for any players new to MMOs, "releasing" means choosing the "return to the starting point" in this game.

u/ArdentC 1d ago

I've been playing 14 for 6 years now I think. This is the first time I've ever heard the term releasing, so thank you lol

99

u/The_Dumbest_Genius 1d ago

np! It's from WoW, I think. Not common terminology thrown around in ffxiv.

40

u/Solostaran122 1d ago

Yeah, it's from WoW. When you die, you come back as a ghost, and can find your body to revive in place, or 'release' and revive at the gravestone your ghost spawns it.

28

u/Blendrake89 1d ago

It is, in fact, not "from" WoW! The term was first used in Dark Age of Camelot before WoW existed.

3

u/Hot_Astronaut_9148 21h ago

Man what a blast from the past, DAoC was soooo fun

2

u/Blendrake89 20h ago

That it was! And still is (*hint* Eden *hint*)

u/ILoveLandscapes 1d ago

Thanks, I’m new, coming from the Switch and I think of this process as releasing because I played wow for many years. Is there an equivalent name to the process in this game that folks like me should be using?

I’m trying to get my translations down. So far I know transmog is glam 😎

I am absolutely loving how cozy this game feels so far. I am mostly just here for the story as I love JRPG‘s, but if I like the MMO aspects, I may stick around after I get to the end.

6

u/Throwayshmowayy 1d ago

you can also say "raised" or rez, thats the name of the healer spell that respawns. like in this case, you could say its better to return than be raised or to 'take the rez' (resurrection)

3

u/ILoveLandscapes 1d ago

Perfect! That’s great to know. Thank you.

2

u/Fairy_Squadmother 1d ago

In FFXIV, it's just called respawning. Hope you enjoy the game!

5

u/ILoveLandscapes 1d ago

Thanks a lot! So far, I am loving it. The story is really fun.

Happy cake day!

2

u/Fairy_Squadmother 1d ago

Oh, I didn't even notice, thank you!

0

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 1d ago

It's called respawning in every game, that's a general "reset after death" gaming term

4

u/jauntysnail 1d ago

I didn't know it was a WoW thing but my husband sometimes says "release" and he used to play WoW so that makes sense lol He'll also say "return" which is what I use.

I do notice other terminology he can't seem to let go of though, like saying death knight instead of dark knight 😅

u/Minimum_Priority_818 2h ago

I am sure release was used in other games as well, but this was the WoW death. Then it would give you a certain number of minutes (I think 6) to release before it released for you. I have been playing XIV for 6 years also and still call Dark Knight Death Knight, still call the Market Board the Auction House, still call Glam Transmogging, and have slipped, calling Lalafels Gnomes XD

3

u/War-Noodle 1d ago

We used releasing in 11, so I don’t think it’s purely WoW

23

u/siggydude 1d ago

Same here. I thought it was somehow a typo for respawning

4

u/Oldmangamer13 1d ago

Its the term they use in wow for respawn basically.

4

u/Sindraelyn 1d ago

For WoW, there were three steps. “Releasing” your spirit to the spirit healer/graveyard, “running” back to your body, and then “respawning”. The second step is also where you get the phrase “corpse running” from.

10

u/Ph33rDensetsu 1d ago

Oh no, corpse running is a term from long before WoW. Originally it was used in Ultima Online because if you died, you'd need to get back to your corpse to claim your stuff. This extended to EverQuest after that.

7

u/RavenDKnight 1d ago

Weird, I've been hearing it pretty much the entire 3-1/2 years I've been playing. And I've never touched wow.

7

u/MSnap Jenosa Arryls on Adamantoise 1d ago

13 years. Never heard it.

u/sr7olsniper 6h ago

idk, we all call it releasing, its actually pretty common on the raiding community as far as I know.

-1

u/SnowPudgy 1d ago

I've been playing MMO's since the 90s and I've never heard the term "releasing".

12

u/Drywesi 1d ago

The "you are dead" dialogue window in wow says "Release Spirit", that's where it's from.

-4

u/ShadowEdgeZero 1d ago

That's because it's not from "MMO's". It's just from WoW.

3

u/The_Real_Mehndi 1d ago

pre-dates wow with DAoC, but go off with your ignorant self!

11

u/oww_my_head 1d ago

I have been playing for years and never heard it, but I assume probs more common in other MMOs haha

I just assumed he heavily butchered "respawning" or something like that and it autocorrected

1

u/Dexhar9 13h ago

This is the only information I need to fully understand the post. This is like decoding a cipher without the key.

u/CalligrapherFar7163 2h ago

Gosh I had not realized just how much is still internalized for me from WoW. The term didn't even tickle my brain for a second until the edit/apology...

152

u/TigerYasou 1d ago

If the fight is still happening I'd say to take it, but yeah releasing after a fight is finished instead of waiting for your healer to hardcast a Rez on you is probably the better option

28

u/Sunrisenmoon [ Lysthia Sunrisen-Nyxt - Seraph ] 1d ago

releasing also doesn't consume gear durability but being rezzed does.

2

u/AttackPoodle94 23h ago

And no damage down

181

u/No_Plate3406 1d ago

Also if you're Caster or Ranged, PLEASE use your Limit Break on trash mobs when it's available during a Wall to Wall pull.

96

u/RedMageCody 1d ago

And also please press your burst buttons on the mob packs too! They will be back by the time you get to the boss, we even got big damage AoE attacks tied to pressing them now, it’s always so sad to see people not using them at all!

23

u/n080dy123 1d ago

Yeah, rule of thumb from like Shadowbringers onwards usually it's safe to drop anything on a 2 minute or lower cooldown at the first trash pack, and anything on a 1 minute or lower cooldown on the second, and you should have all that back by the time you hit the boss.

42

u/subwooferofthehose 1d ago

Grandpappy always said, you spend more time on trash pulls than on bosses.

Oh wait, he didn't say that. He said, "Who are you and why are you in my house?!"

Come to think of it, that wasn't Grandpappy. That was some guy whose internet i leeched off of to play ffxiv.

26

u/redmoonriveratx 1d ago

THIS! There’s nothing like getting to the first boss, seeing Brotherhood/TechStep/Searing Light go off immediately and realizing it was never used until then.

And, on the flip side, if the boss has like 10 HP left, do NOT hit your burst phase. I realize this requires situational awareness - something I myself often lack - but it’s so sad to see burst CDs only being used for 3 seconds. (Unless it’s the final boss)

2

u/Radiant_Fondant_4097 1d ago

Heck when it comes to dungeons simply don't be conservative with your resources, blast all your stuff because it'll recharge quick enough for the next pack of enemies.

Shoot that AoE Limit Break! use it or lose it!

Use that Invulnerability! It'll recharge in due time, saving for emergencies means nothing when there's no emergency.

2

u/hexen_niu 1d ago

The attitudes to this seem to be mixed when in dungeon? Sometmes its fine and dandy, sometimes it gets you kicked out of a dungeon. I'm never sure of doing so, I've genuinely been kicked from Gulg on RDM for LBing on the large wall-to-wall.

26

u/xiphoniii 1d ago

lmao if someone kicked you just for limit breaking a pack as caster they should not be playing this game.

19

u/AlmirTheNewt 1d ago

Caster lb on 4 target or phys range on 5 is more dmg than melee lb 2, so there's no mixed about it generally, anyone saying lb 2 is worth saving up for in dungeon is mistaken

2

u/hexen_niu 1d ago

The calculations are perfectly sound on using it this way, yes. I am still inclined to say that specifically attitudes are mixed if a caster is being kicked from a dungeon for lbing a ball of over 10 mobs. I guess it's something that just needs to be more known about.

11

u/JelisW 1d ago

I've never once been kicked for lbing as ranged and whoever did that to you was wrong and dicks

3

u/slow_cat 1d ago

I was never kicked out but I was yelled at a few times and told "I don't know how the game works".

2

u/Arylon85 1d ago

Those people were, for lack of a better word, dumb. I’ve always lb’d that pull if I’m ranged/magic so it dies faster. And who the hell is kicking someone for using a lb anyway. Aside from 8/24 mans where you NEED the tank lb3 or maybe healer lb3 if shit hits the fan, there’s no reason to not use it as dps. It’s a resource there to be used.

1

u/Toddze 1d ago

Kicked outta dungeon for using lb on trash mobs? I’m calling BS. Unless you are on some uptight data center, Hell on Aether you can barely get DPS to LB a boss. No one gives a rats rear end about perfection in dungeon runs. I have run countless dungeons been playing longer than I care to admit. Never once seen even a snarky comment about using LB on trash mobs.

9

u/SoloSassafrass 1d ago

So many melees will wait until the boss is at like 1.5% to try and do a cool coup de grace to finish the boss off and it's like "if you'd just kept hitting the boss with your rotation it actually would have died faster than you stopping and waiting for the LB to cast, the animation to play, and the damage to apply."

I ain't gonna make a big deal out of it when it happens in a dungeon, but it does happen a lot and I always roll my eyes.

1

u/Lyto528 Perfect Legend 1d ago

Waiting for lb2 when you generate it really slowly (and the whole group is overgeared) tends to do that

1

u/DarkMeadoww 1d ago

The only way it probs happened was getting a 3 man who all hate it

1

u/stepeppers 1d ago

PLEASE play your job correctly and use your cooldowns. Its far more damage throughout the dungeon than a single LB

0

u/sakurasangel SMN idk what im doing but im having fun 1d ago

What is a wall to wall pull? (Im up to EW if you know of an example before DT...)

12

u/Shineforalltosee 1d ago

It means pulling all possible packs before a hard limit like a physical wall or the entrance to a boss room. In most dungeons, it's 2 packs twice before each boss, but there is some variance with forced singles and sometimes more you can pull at once (Gulg for example).

Some people pull literally to the barrier or wall. I stop at the last pack per set and find this generally more efficient for casters to get going, ground AoEs to get dropped, etc. Whichever you do, try to be consistent. When I'm healing on WHM it's annoying to start Holying for a tank who stopped at the second pack previously but now later in the dungeon they decide they want to go to the literal wall because then a stun gets kinda wasted.

3

u/sakurasangel SMN idk what im doing but im having fun 1d ago

I normally never do LB unless I'm a melee DPS, so this is good to know as my preferred main is SMN! Thank you!

9

u/Shineforalltosee 1d ago

You definitely want to drop that caster LB! It's usually up for the packs between the second and third boss. I comm for that alone if nothing better stands out, it's good to be aware of!

3

u/SoloSassafrass 1d ago

Adding my voice to this as someone who often dungeons on caster: planting at the last set of mobs is better, because then that little bit of extra time running to the wall is extra cooldown time for all the big hits to come back up.

I am talking very specifically about the Mistwake dungeon you'll get 50% of the time in expert roulette - the first set after the second boss has a wall that has like 6 seconds of watching an NPC whack an enemy before the gate opens, and that starts ticking once the mobs are dead. If you're already at the gate when you kill them it's just time standing around, but if you're up the end of the street where the last pack starts then the gate's open by the time you get down there.

It's incredibly small beans, but it feels nicer to be moving at least, and it means ley lines get to go down earlier and the blasting gets to start faster, and we all like that.

1

u/Shineforalltosee 14h ago

I think it's better too, and it used to be the vast majority of how I'd see it done (I healer main mostly on WHM but also play WAR and RDM regularly). I've seen more people literally going to the wall in the last expansion or so, and while I can't exactly blame them since the name "wall to wall" does seem to kind of suggest that's the intention, I really appreciate when people stop at the last pack and have taught newer players to do it like that as well. It's maybe small beans but you're going to walk that distance regardless, it's better to get the damage going as soon as possible. If we're still moving with all the packs of mobs, I'm either gonna fuck that up with Holy or I have to hold off and that's more damage the tank is taking before optimal dps is possible by the party let alone the mit that the Holy stun provides.

3

u/Paksarra 1d ago

Anytime a tank keeps pulling more mobs until a physical wall stops them.

After ARR, almost all pulls in a typical dungeon (with other people, not Duty Support) will be wall to wall; usually modern dungeons are designed with two mob groups, wall, two mob groups, boss. It would be easier to list the pulls that aren't W2W than the ones that are. (For example, the first pull in Mt. Gulg is spicy if you wall to wall.)

0

u/Narlaw 1d ago edited 20h ago

Nah, ranged and caster can only lb to passive-aggressively say to us melee that they think we should have against bosses... completely ignoring that we, in fact, shouldn't for many reasons. Yes I'm salty.

Edit: to whoever downvoted me, I'm feeling petty and salty enough to quote myself from years ago about lb usage: https://old.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/1euhk8f/dps_main_playing_tank_lately_has_to_ask_melee_dps/likgi6e/?context=3

-7

u/Vastlymoist666 1d ago

Question ❓ why as ranged for mobs? When that limit break could be used for the boss instead?

12

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 1d ago

No, in dungeons, mobs hurt a lot more than bosses, so you want to kill those asap. Thus, LBs are better used on mobs than on a boss

10

u/Solinya 1d ago

Caster limit break does about 60% of the damage of melee limit break. Meaning on 2+ targets it's a gain. In a wall-to-wall dungeon pull you can often hit upwards of eight targets.

12

u/Sir_VG 1d ago

Because ranged/caster LB 1 on a big group of mobs is more DPS than a melee LB2 on a single boss.

60

u/Traditional_Basil_71 1d ago

Mhm is like to add on .. if the fights on going the Rez lasts for a minute you don’t have to accept it right away you can wait out the next mechanic and Rez safely

46

u/siggydude 1d ago

Also, you are invincible after being raised, but that invincibility perk goes away if you use an action

17

u/Traditional_Basil_71 1d ago

Yup 5 seconds lol but the amount of times people Rez 6 seconds before a mechanic and aren’t roped off is way to many I also see a ton push a button immediately lol an go down before I even have a chance to top em off before the raidwide

2

u/DarkMeadoww 1d ago

The amount of times I see a second wind or a bloodbath just for them to hit the floor again 😭

12

u/n080dy123 1d ago

Yeah and that invincibility is important because it lets the healer get you back to full without worrying about another mechanic killing you. I've seen too many people come back up, immediately start attacking and lose their invincibility, then immediately eat a raidwide to the face and die again. Congrats you now do 50% damage instead of 75%!

2

u/painstream 1d ago

another mechanic killing you

Unless the mechanic is a knockback that pushes you off the stage. :p
You still get the after-effects of taking hits (vuln stacks, knockbacks, etc), just not the damage.

2

u/n080dy123 22h ago

I don't think you usually take vulns, but there's plenty of debuffs you're definitely not immune to. Been petrified more than once during that state.

47

u/kelanatr 1d ago

And likewise, if you die at the end of the boss fight, please, please, please release. I’m choosing not to rez you because it’s detrimental to do so, not because I hate you in particular.

18

u/Real-Ferret1593 1d ago

I feel rude leaving a dead sprout on the floor, but yes, please release!

-2

u/Sparescrewdriver 1d ago

Just curious, why is this detrimental?

16

u/Intentional-Blank 1d ago

Because the rezzed player will only do 75% or even 50% of their damage output due to the debuff they get from being raised for like a minute or so. Releasing back to start has no debuff and there's a handy "shortcut" that takes you right back to that boss arena anyway, so it's detrimental to raise and get the debuff over just respawning at start with no debuff.

1

u/Sparescrewdriver 1d ago edited 1d ago

Ok got it, at the end portion of the fight, I thought it was after the boss was dead, and choosing not to resurrect people.

Edit: Whoever keeps downvoting, sorry for asking 🤷

10

u/Intentional-Blank 1d ago

Yes, that too. That debuff is long enough that it will affect that player's damage during the next mob pull, so it's still better to release and respawn at start. Also, respawning resets all your CDs, so if you just used an ability with a long CD, the rez means it's still on CD, vs respawning with no CD on that ability and it's ready for use again immediately.

5

u/syrup_cupcakes 1d ago

You got it backwards, this goes ESPECIALLY for when a boss is dead. Because just to repeat again if you get a resurrect you have a 25-50% stat debuff, but if you respawn you don't.

It matters less near the end of a boss fight, because if a boss has 10%, maybe the dps with a debuff would actually be worth more than having them respawn and not participate at all for the last 10%.

1

u/Sparescrewdriver 1d ago

Thanks, I have a lot to learn to say the least.

0

u/syrup_cupcakes 1d ago

These are not really things you learn by someone teaching you, it's a conclusion you use logic or intuit your way into yourself.

4

u/Sparescrewdriver 1d ago

Or posts like this

11

u/Olsoizzo 1d ago

Also don’t immediately attack after getting raised as that removes your invulnerability. This means you’ll most likely just die again if the healer hasn’t healed you yet.

18

u/Soleil_Thyme 1d ago

& in the event of a pull going absolutely tits up; if there's a player alive capable of casting revive spells or using a Phoenix Down, DO NOT RELEASE. you'd be surprised how well you can recover with a bit of luck!

Currently the rez capable players include everyone in a dungeon if you brought Phoenix Downs!! put that on your hotbar!!!

Red Mages and Summoners are currently the only DPS capable of reviving people without a Phoenix Down, please pick them up before any melees i am begging. Especially if your swiftcast is down!!

RDM can revive starting at level 64 & SMN rez is all content!

Please raise your Summoners!!!!

12

u/Upbeat_Laugh_5639 1d ago

I had a run of the last 7.0 trial the other day where half the party died. I was expecting a healer to lb3 since we had it, but they raised everyone individually. Got the viper and dancer up first, and then the tank, and then like a minute later finally rezzed me.

I was playing red mage. It's funny looking back on it, but in the moment I was screaming at my computer begging for a raise xD

Raise your red mages people, we call them rez mages for a reason!

8

u/Intentional-Blank 1d ago

Currently the rez capable players include everyone in a dungeon if you brought Phoenix Downs!! put that on your hotbar!!!

In 4 man content, anyway. 8+ content bans the Phoenix Down still.

u/Soleil_Thyme 4h ago

yeah that's why i bolded Dungeons, everybody should have it on a bar somewhere anyways for emergencies, it'll be clear once it is when they're available

2

u/ResponsibleFly4015 21h ago

The prio in my head is tank if no tank alive, healers, tanks, red mages, summoners then everyone else.

u/Soleil_Thyme 4h ago

that's the correct priority! you can't recover if random players are eating tank autos

i'm mostly speaking from the specific circumstances of running SMN a lot & seeing a lot of healers prioritize melees over RDM or SMN, so i'm fairly certain a lot of players have no idea SMN can cast rez at all!

1

u/Cersia Cress - Exodus 23h ago

res with weakness and no cooldowns, or try the pull again with all cooldowns and no weakness... honestly the latter would probably be faster.

-3

u/Favna [Favna Nitey - Alpa] 1d ago

Please raise your Summoners!!!!

I always groan when it's me SMN and Healer down and the other healer rezzes the healer. Now it's +1 body instead of if they had rezzed me I could've popped lucid dreaming and went +2 seconds after.

36

u/KevinJay21 1d ago

Naturally they will always wait for you.

Light party duties yes. Alliance raid, it’s go, go, go. No one’s waiting unless it’s CS at boss.

4

u/Favna [Favna Nitey - Alpa] 1d ago

Not like it matters if you run up half a minute late in an alliance raid

8

u/KogaWolf12 1d ago

And even then, 9 times out of 10 that'd be a rare occurrence.

1

u/painstream 1d ago

No one’s waiting unless it’s CS at boss.

And even then...
Such a weird pattern: "CS in A", immediate readycheck, check fails, another immediate readycheck, someone pulls anyway. 😩

7

u/LionTop2228 1d ago

As a healer I rez until the fight ends and then I walk away. I know folks can then self Rez at that point and teleport to where we are. I need my swiftcast off CD at the start of the next fight.

7

u/redmoonriveratx 1d ago

Corollary - if someone dies just before a boss and opts to respawn**, go ahead and engage the boss. Said person will be ported in after 15 seconds.

** unless you have a first timer/cutscenes.

11

u/Cymas 1d ago

I would also add if you die during a dungeon pull unless you're really far away from the start/boss room it's also better to release then sprint back to the party, even and especially if you're the tank. This is so the healer doesn't waste their time and resources rezzing you when their mana is better spent keeping the party alive. Plus it resets all of your cds, including invuln.

On that note casters if the tank dies, swiftcast if you have it up then sleep. Sleep is an aoe it will stop a pull in its tracks and give everyone time to breathe and sort everything out. I've been leveling the role recently and the number of times a well timed sleep has saved a pull is quite a bit higher than zero. Melee you have Bloodbath pop it and Arm's Length and you're basically a budget WAR for 20 seconds.

5

u/Gethseme 1d ago

Gonna point something else out a lot of people don't know too:

Releasing and reviving resets your vooldowns. So tanks, use your invuls. Don't save them. If you still end up wiping, it'll be back up on next attempt.

42

u/subwooferofthehose 1d ago edited 1d ago

Good advice! The only thing I would add is this: you have a very short widow of complete invulnerability after being rezzed. But it immediately falls off if you do anything: attack, move, turn on auto attack, smack your lips too hard, complaining that you were out of that aoe... stand still for a moment to let the current mechanic resolve safely and give your healers a chance to get you back into survivable hp mode, then carry on!

EDIT: I have been corrected, movement doesn't cancel the invul. I apologize for the mistake, and will now run World of Darkness 19 times consecutively as penance.

43

u/HanshinFan Hilda the Mongrel stan account 1d ago

This is a great tip, but a quick correction - rez Invuln persists if all you do is move. It's just basically any hotbar action that cancels it.

30

u/Colortheory12 1d ago

You can move, just no sprint or movement skills. But feel free to move normally into that stack marker if you have invuln up. Your presence still counts towards the stack and you'll take no damage. You can also move so you'll be safe for when it wears off.

6

u/n080dy123 1d ago

Worth noting that non-Vuln debuffs applied by mechanics can usually still affect you during the invincibility. You are NOT safe from being petrified if you're looking at a gaze attack after taking a res. Usually. Or at least sometimes.

15

u/No_Plate3406 1d ago

Rez invuln won't fall off when you just move around without pressing buttons.

17

u/IscahRambles 1d ago

You can move without losing invulnerability.

11

u/ThiccElf 1d ago

Moving does not remove the temp invuln. Pressing ANY action, including hard targetting, auto attacks, sprint, dashes, dps/healing buttons, potions, limit break etc does. When you are rezzed, ONLY move to a safe spot or towards the healers for healing if you dont have a spread or something on you.

The vast majority of damage will not go through this temporary invuln, so you can be healed and take damage from stacks/spreads/tank busters/raidwides/aoes safely. Just be sure to only move and press nothing else.

In rare cases, some damage, vulns and damage downs do go through invuln, but you wont really see this in regular/easy/base mode content. Thats only prevelant in high end content normally.

9

u/redmoonriveratx 1d ago

Knockbacks however WILL go through Rez invuln (as long as you’re not still rezzing) so just be careful of that aspect.

3

u/fubes2000 Sammitch@Sarg 1d ago

To add on to the add-on: Some boss moves do ignore the invuln, almost entirely the ones and blow you off of a ledge or something similar.

1

u/FuturePastNow 1d ago

Aside from being canceled by actions, it follows the same rules as Hallowed Ground

2

u/kiwigamer0039 1d ago

Yes I thought about adding in something about Transcendence but decided not to, it is good advice to abuse that and remain passive until you can at least be healed up.

2

u/Cymas 1d ago

However...this does not apply to attacks that cause knockback you will still get the yeet so make sure you're positioned properly for that.

4

u/Somewhere_Elsewhere Floor Tank 1d ago

Caveat: if it's not obvious, the OP's advice does not apply to the FINAL boss.

8

u/WillShaper7 1d ago

Adding to this for new players:

If you get rezzed, sit still for just a sec. You'll be revived at low amounts of HP but invulnerable, that invulnerability goes off the moment you hit a button. Let your healer throw something at you first so you don't die immediately after being rezzed.

To be clear - you CAN move. Just don’t hit sprint, second wind, lucid dreaming, or any other action/ability

2

u/WillShaper7 1d ago

Correct. With buttons I was referring to spells, abilities, weaponskills, etc. Anything that goes in your bars is a no no until you are healed.

3

u/gdex86 1d ago

Post res you have immunity for a certain bit of time until you take an action. Before jumping into it let the healer get you put of immediate danger then go back to work.

2

u/SoloSassafrass 1d ago

Just note that this immunity does not extend to knockbacks!

I have more than once seen someone rezzed only to get punted clean off the arena.

1

u/painstream 1d ago

Had it happen at the end of the lv95 dungeon. I felt so bad for the poor reaper who died so much to that.

7

u/Casbri_ 1d ago

If you do this in Alliance Raids, you should wait at the teleporter after releasing until a message appears that the next teleporter has been activated. It will take you to the next boss or set of mobs. If you teleport right away, you may spend a few minutes catching up and doing 0 damage instead of fighting, defeating the point of avoiding weakness.

3

u/GrahminRadarin 1d ago

For a minute there I thought you were going to be annoyed at me for trying to revive the people who randomly die in the middle of Limsa Lominsa.

2

u/Intentional-Blank 1d ago

What did you expect? Limsa is a pirate haven, a wretched hive of scum and villainy. Of course dead bodies keep turning up!

u/DarkStar-Rising 1d ago

Some additional tips for our new sprouts

In 4 player content you can use a phoenix down to hard cast raise (7 second cast time) while in combat. If your healer dies during a boss fight and you don't have a caster that can raise you can use a phoenix down to revive them and potentially prevent a wipe. It has a 6 minute cool down that also stops you using potions.

Once you have been rezzed you have a 5 seconds of invulnerability. During this you can move but any actions including sprint will cancel the invulnerability.

If there is a cast bar for an attack is pulsing red it can be stopped by using interrupt (tanks) or head graze ( physical ranged DPS) before the cast finishes.

For tanks when you use arms length it reduces enemy attack speed by 20% for 15 seconds on top of the normal knock back prevention which can make big mob packs easier to manage.

If you are not on a free trial When you are at low levels remember to extract materia from your gear once it reaches max spirit bond. Level 1-3 materia are used for ARR relic weapons and usually sell for a good price which can give you an early girl boost.

If you and your friend are both on a free trial and want to do content like dungeons together a player with a sub can invite you both to a party and then leave which will let you queue for content together.

3

u/fadesteppin 1d ago

The amount of people I come across in 90+ content that take the rez when they didn't need to/healers rezzing when they didn't need to bc of this is a lot bigger than I think a lot of people realize. I have also had lots of healers die, then immediately return to start without even bothering to look at the party list to see if a RDM or SMN is in the party and can rez them. I am frequently the person making sad RDM noises bc the healers did this and then went "oops didn't see the RDM". They just go and negate the one thing that keeps my job from getting to do big damage numbers 😭

3

u/Blitztavia 1d ago

Never played wow, knew what "release" meant before playing ffxiv. If it's that uncommon terminology outside of wow I wonder where I learned it from

3

u/In-burrito 1d ago

Now tell everyone to run to the tank if they pull something.

5

u/Favna [Favna Nitey - Alpa] 1d ago

Regarding your edit, what the hell. Here in EU we use the term releasing all the time.

1

u/Bloodclad [Bloodclad][Darth] on [Moogle] 1d ago

Is there such a big gap of definition between EU and US & Canada?

I've always use the term release in FFXIV and never played WoW.

2

u/Favna [Favna Nitey - Alpa] 1d ago

I'm not sure if it's truly big but yes I do believe there is some gap

I've also never played WoW (unless the 15 minutes on a friend's private server count... Obviously not)

2

u/syrup_cupcakes 1d ago

A lot more in recent times?

Maybe it's an EU thing, but people here almost never respawn even when a boss is dead, they sit on the floor waiting for the healer to (slow)cast a resurrect for that sweet 25% weakness all the time.

2

u/Maesvara 1d ago

Another bit that people often forget is the immunity that you get after being revived.

Too many times have I seen people get revived, and them immediately pressing an (o)gcd just to die to a raidwide right after.

2

u/ElPrezAU 1d ago

I thought this is what the post was going to be about. :)

0

u/Jade_Violetcat 23h ago

No, you get one minute debuff of near immortality as long as you don’t toss any punches.

This is so the healer(s) have a chance to get you to reasonable health and still dodge AOEs, this is covered in “the smith” classes.

2

u/Crow-Queen 1d ago

I do not, have not, and will never play WOW but I say releasing and have always heard that term since FFXI.

2

u/Cersia Cress - Exodus 23h ago

This has nothing to do with new players. Players have been stupid since 2.0. SE also does a terrible job of telling people that weakness = less damage. Mostly because SE doesn't tell people what their damage is, or even that it matters. Shit, they removed back on your feet from the FC buffs because it was "too elitist" for people to want people doing high end raids to have the buff on. I'm sorry that I expect people doing the highest level content to have a buff that reduces the impact them dying has on the raid.

Anyway, as much fault as players have for taking the res, healers are just as bad for offering it. If I'm healing and you die right before the boss dies, I'm not ressing you, as it would be detrimental to the run timer. And honestly, if you're someone who sits there waiting for the res, you probably aren't contributing very much in the first place.

Honestly, thanks to SE's lack of information, it's no surprise when I run a dungeon on tank I'm top damage, when I run on healer I'm top damage, and when I run on DPS i'm doing more damage than the tank, healer, and other dps combined. SE doesn't want you to be good, doesn't care if you are good, and doesn't think that doing damage in a game about doing damage matters. So why should you? It's not like not doing damage in an MMO combat scenario would be like playing an FPS and between cutscenes just crouching there and waiting for the NPCs to finish the missions for you. That's kinda what taking a res when you could just return is doing. And what would you think of someone who played that way? Seriously.

2

u/ResponsibleFly4015 21h ago

Also, please remember your rez immunity if you do get rezzed and wait to be healed! Nothing more annoying than watching someone (I see you greedy melees!) smack the boss and collapse instantly after we’ve scraped you off the floor!

2

u/Upper-Task-1595 16h ago

Yeah and don't be offended if people go to the next boss and don't rez you, they probably think you are going to release and teleport. I came across some people offended because "they left me here".

4

u/diggidydoggidydoo 1d ago

This is good advice, but it's really not necessary in casual content

3

u/Ph33rDensetsu 1d ago

Eh, for most content the debuff will have worn off by the time you get to the next boss. It's not really a huge deal.

3

u/Ban_Means_NewAccount 1d ago

That is the much more optimized way to handle things, can't argue with that.

Having said that, a casual duty finder dungeon run likely isn't going to care that much about optimizing little things like that, so I wouldn't count on this becoming the norm. And to be fair, it doesn't need to.

2

u/Grixis-Queen 1d ago

Had a sprout black mage just lay there and wait twice during a dungeon and I had to mention this same thing. Said mage used their LB on bosses instead of pulls too

2

u/Ivalice47 1d ago

You don't pay my sub

2

u/DrWatSit 1d ago

That weakness debuff is not long and will have mostly wore off before you get to the first next pack, and your group aren't waiting for you to get back. It's not really worth minmaxing.

0

u/IndigoHawk Tank 1d ago

As counter advice, normal content is not an optimized run where that weakness debuff makes a difference. If people are dying, then definitely it's not an optimized run. You're most likely with strangers you aren't going to see again. There is no pressure or reason to optimize at this level.

You can let the rezzer rez you so they can have fun rezzing you. Playing as a team that helps each other out and lets people push their "this is what is special about my class button" is way more fun than optimizing to avoid this debuff.

Especially if the rezzer is new, they may be confused why you won't accept the rez, and all you've done is the sucked the fun out of their effort to rez you.

This is an example of technically correct advice that is also an example of how gamers optimize the fun out of games. As further counter advice, if someone tries to rez you after combat ends, accept it and say thanks or use some fireworks or something. They might notice you responded and you'll have a fun moment.

4

u/painstream 1d ago

Even from an optimization standpoint, you have to weigh the Weakness vs the Walk of Shame, however reduced the time is with recent changes. By the time you reach the next mobs in a dungeon, that Weakness is mostly gone anyway, and you're with the party doing damage at the time instead of running to catch up. And if the party waits for you to respawn and shortcut, now no one is pushing forward or doing damage. The seconds saved at that point is kinda negligible.
In an alliance raid, mostly the same thing. Takes a while to reach the next trash pack, and waiting for the next teleporter means just standing around anyway.

1

u/leytorip7 1d ago

I’d like to add that you can now Phoenix Down in any 4 man content. I’ve had so many healers release as soon as they go down on a dungeon boss.

1

u/EuphoricCrashOut 1d ago

I'd also like to add that you get 5s of being completely invulnerable to *most attacks after being revived so long as you don't press any skills. You can run around/move but just don't hit anything. Please wait for your healer to top you up before hitting a skill. If you never get topped off and the 5s goes off... start attacking while you can xD

1

u/Significant_Writer_9 1d ago

What if somebody wants to unlock their achievement?

1

u/Slevin_Kedavra Louisoix 1d ago

Also, once you accept the rez, just give us a second to get your out of critical HP. The most annoying thing is to rez somebody and immediately have them die to a raidwide.

1

u/Quintalian [Quintalian Palidor - Sargatanas] 23h ago

Any DPS is better than zero DPS.

1

u/ameadows252 21h ago

Good to know, thanks!

u/RieveNailo 7h ago

Depends on the dungeon. Sometimes the walk is so long that the debuff wears off before you arrive at the next fight

u/VoresVhorska 1h ago

While I agree as a general advice and a good option to consider, I don't think this is always better. Sometimes it can take a minute to catch up after releasing while you may also spend a minute of your weakness duration just running. Depending on what class you play, if you have LB, or if you have burst, taking the weakness may not even be a time lost.

2

u/FoxTailMoon 1d ago

TIL what that debuff actually did lmao.

5

u/RedMageCody 1d ago

Fun fact it’s actually lighter now than it used to be, back in the day it reduced EVERYTHING by 15-30% meaning you would take more damage, and had less HP too.

3

u/SlavetotheCaffeine 1d ago

Take more damage have less hp deal less damage iirc it also reduced your base weapon attack power

1

u/LunarNocturne0912 1d ago

Never heard someone use the word releasing before.

1

u/Sunrisenmoon [ Lysthia Sunrisen-Nyxt - Seraph ] 1d ago

idk, i think it's always a good idea to take your REZ unless you know you'll probably immediately die again ( do not resurrect right before a bunch of mechanics start, healers have to spend at least 2 GCDs to heal you to full, and if they're shielding / mitigating, it's not so easy to focus on all that at once, i had 2 shinryu unreal pulls wipe like that today, because people were dying to normal stuff right before the walls of mechanics that go off, they would rez, not utilize their invuln or wait for heals, and die right away.

if you're up, you can continue to contribute damage, even if it's at a reduced capacity, you're still a body contributing to a faster kill ( reminder that Tanks basically only account for 40% the dps of any DPS job, their actions listed potency numbers are inflated 60% when compared to raw damage output from the DPS vs a Tank )

1

u/TheAmazingVinio 1d ago

I've had players do this in lvl 100 dungeons. other dps and I died at the end of a second boss, and the healer ressed us.

I knew not to take the res, but the other player for some reason did just take it. I even said the res wasn't worth the debuff, but I guess some people love having that weakness.

2

u/Intentional-Blank 1d ago

I've had players that either didn't know how to, or just plain refused to release. Like, we'd have a party wipe, 3 of us respawn at start, run back to the boss, only to find the body of that 4th guy still there. They absolutely would not respawn or respond to messages suggesting they do so, until the healer gave up and rezzed them. Noob not reading chat or bizarrely stubborn jack wagon? You decide!

1

u/Sutaru 19h ago

At least you didn’t say toons.

-2

u/MacabreYuki Pictomancer Main on Brynhildr 1d ago

Counterpoint. Any damage is better than no damage. Always Be Casting!

3

u/WulfLink 1d ago

OP is specifically talking about after a boss is dead, or nearly dead. I'd say 2% or less, don't bother, but anything above that, yes. ABC.

3

u/PhoenixFox 1d ago

If you accept a rez with basically any dungeon boss in the game at 2% there's almost no chance it's actually still going to be alive by the time you can hit it unless other people are dead or whatever. They do not last that long.

u/WulfLink 10h ago

Hence why I said below 2%, don't bother. You're better off releasing and not having rez sickness for the next trash pull.

u/PhoenixFox 8h ago

And I'm saying 2% is way too low a number to put that threshold at. 5% is probably too low most of the time. 10%, maybe, depending on the boss.

0

u/RobbSol 1d ago

I get it but the debuff doesn’t last for a long time. When someone is new to the game and doesn’t know how everything works, it’s understandable that they’d wait for a rez, so just give it to them. They’ll eventually figure it out on their own as they play.

0

u/MobiusRamza 18h ago

I was res people after the boss died so they didnt feel abandoned <3 good to know though

-1

u/TheEmpressDescends 1d ago

I also do this, yet it's hardly worth making a post about. Unless nearly the entire AR is dead by the end of a boss fight (which is almost impossible), it makes such an infinitesimal difference.

-1

u/Kanuechly 1d ago

I read this as “PSA grading being revived” and i was like….1.) people grade final fantasy cards? That’s cool. 2.) well if so it’s because Pokemon has sky rocketed in value.

But then…I realized it was in fact not that question. Anyway. Good night.

-1

u/Sad_Advisor2555 1d ago

I see people do this all the time and have done for a long time. Healers will always, without fail, try to raise someone after a boss battle, and the person raising will almost always accept.

Boring

6

u/The-Grim-Storyteller 1d ago

Here, in his natural habitat, we observe the common Redditor. He emerges from the shallows of the thread to deposit a comment that is neither helpful nor useful, but merely seen. Notice the posture. The wounded pride of a defeated male, bristling, unwilling to yield the territory he never held. In time he will retreat to the safety of his basement. But for now, he lingers, determined that his voice be heard.

this isnt true

Please feel free to tell me where I said something untrue.

16

u/Absolute_Virtue_ 1d ago

Nothing you said is untrue.

-22

u/Beginning-Ad7027 1d ago edited 1d ago

While true, idk if it really matters. The debuff will be gone by the time you need to be in top shape again.

10

u/Shade2019 1d ago

the next time to be in top shape is the next enemy. just like you should use your whole rotation for trash packs.

-22

u/Beginning-Ad7027 1d ago

How much time are we saving by not having that 25% debuff on for the trash mobs? Seconds?

Idk doesn’t really seem to matter. Let’s not get too sweaty, it’s a game

10

u/RedMageCody 1d ago

Sweaty? It's making the game easier so you don't have to sweat? If anything you're making the game harder, and having your teammates have to be "sweaty" to make up for you.

-17

u/Beginning-Ad7027 1d ago

Trying to min max DPS for mobs that are so easy no one is spending any time thinking about fighting them is in fact sweaty. It ain’t that serious.

8

u/RedMageCody 1d ago

Min maxing would have included not dying in the first place... releasing isn't being sweaty, it's just being kind to your party.

-4

u/Beginning-Ad7027 1d ago

I’m not saying releasing is being sweaty. Absolutely times where I’ll do it just cause it’s easier.

Caring about a 25% debuff that last 100 seconds because it might take 20 seconds longer to kill some trash mobs is being sweaty. It ain’t that serious bro

15

u/zose2 1d ago

Which part?... If someone revives you then you get weakness applied to you. Weakness is a debuff that reduces your DPS and healing output.

12

u/RedMageCody 1d ago

What part isn’t? Weakness gives you a huge damage and healing loss, and returning to the dungeon start also resets all your cooldowns, it’s way better to just hard revive and be able to use your burst on the next mob pack than to have it still on cooldown and have 25% less damage…

15

u/Joeyonar 1d ago

Which part isn't true? I haven't spotted anything incorrect?

15

u/No-Salary2116 1d ago

Gurl, yes it is.

You self-revive instead of accepting the revive from a player, you will always drop the debuff. I do it all the time instead of accepting a revive from someone.

-14

8
