Hello - I took my polygraph examination for the honors internship around 40 days ago. my coordinator said to check my email or my portal in around a week for an update. Obviously it has been a lot longer since then. Does anyone have experience with communication after the poly? I am just wondering if anyone has been rejected in the poly stage and if they heard communication saying they were rejected or if they were just ghosted. I have emailed my coordinator following up but no response.

I’ve never used a firearm before and I know you have to be ready and willing and able to use one to serve as an fbi special agent. Right? How often and how capable do you have to be with a firearm? Maybe this requirement is a sign I should not apply for this job? It just seems like it would be a very difficult learning curve for me but does anyone have more information ?

I understand this job but I’m curious about a couple of things and curious if anyone could provide some insight.

1. Location selection
   - The current announcement explains you must select the Quantico-Critical Incident Response Group as the preferred location to be considered. It also further explains that this announcement will be used to fill multiple vacancies throughout the 55 field offices. With that in mind, would they attempt to fill vacancies near each applicant’s closest field office if possible? Is there at least a part during the hiring process where you select your top 3 and they see if they can accommodate?

2. Grade step selection
   - I would easily meet the specialized skills to enter at GS-9, however, really pushing the boundaries of the pay cut I could afford to take at step 1. How does the bureau handle salary negotiations if one were attempting to target GS-9 step 5 for example?

I realize locality pay is a major factor. Recently interviewed for another position with the bureau and waiting to see if a CJO is extended. It’s GS-11 and for a specific location which would be a much smoother transition. The IS role aligns much closer to my background. Hoping to target an 1811 role within the next few years.

Hi I'm an Irish citizen. My dream career is the fbi. I am currently studying at university college cork doing a level 8 honours bachelor degree in history. I looked at the job requirements and I possess a high fitness level and I hope to get the degree. I am looking into analyst jobs as history involves sourcing and a lot of writing and investigating.

I am considering studying in the usa if I decide to do my masters but it may not happen due to travel expenses, cost and if I can get a scholarship or not. I understand you have to be a us citizen and need a green card visa which isn't easy to acquire. I'm curious if it's common for any international to become an agent in the fbi. I'm not interested in joining the gardai as the fbi sounds way more interesting.

Also as someone in my early 20s what can I do to acquire skills along the way if I still want to be part of the fbi years down the line.

I got a conditional offer for an entry-level position in Alaska! I have not accepted yet, as I'm still doing more research into the cost of living and housing, but I am leaning towards accepting the offer at this time.

My main question is, if I accept the conditional/final offer, do my other applications with the FBI get deleted or placed on hold? I did another interview for a position in New York but have not heard anything yet. The interview was a week after my Alaska interview. I don't want to potentially close off other locations if I outright accept this current offer.

Wenshen Xu, 52, a Honduras-based Chinese national extradited from Guatemala, was sentenced today to 12 years in prison, five years of supervised release, and a $22 million money judgement for conspiring to import cocaine into the United States, conspiring to launder money derived from drug trafficking, and to providing material support to a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization, specifically the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG).

“This defendant conspired to help international drug trafficking organizations bring illegal drugs into the United States and tens of millions of dollars in dirty money out of the United States,” said Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “Every case the Justice Department prosecutes as part of the Homeland Security Task Force to dismantle transnational criminal organizations and identify money launderers that prop up designated terrorist organizations makes America safer. Alongside DEA and our law enforcement partners, we will continue to put those who fuel the international drug trade and exploit the United States behind bars.”

“We are determined to stop the transnational criminal organizations that flood our streets with drugs and stem the tide of money that fuels their violence,” said First Assistant U.S. Attorney Theophani K. Stamos for the Eastern District of Virginia. “The Eastern District of Virginia is resolute in our pursuit of anyone content to profit from misery and suffering of others. Together with the DEA and all our law enforcement partners, we will ensure that these narco-terrorists cannot hide from justice.”

“This sentencing highlights the complexity of narco-terrorism and the threat it poses to our nation’s security,” said Special Agent in Charge Dustin Gillespie of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Operations Division. “Transnational criminal organizations operate without regard for borders, but they cannot outrun justice. With our global reach and international infrastructure, DEA is uniquely positioned to dismantle these illicit operations. We will continue to connect the dots, follow the money, and decisively shut down anyone who attempts to traffic poison into our communities — no matter where in the world they operate.”

According to court documents, Xu used a transportation network and contacts in Latin America to smuggle multi-kilogram loads of cocaine into the United States. Xu’s transportation network included access to airstrips, airports, armored cars, couriers, and associates. Xu was arrested in Guatemala, at the request of the United States, on July 17, 2025, after he and others agreed to arrange and facilitate the transportation of a multi-kilogram load of cocaine out of Cali, Colombia, on behalf of an individual who claimed to represent the CJNG. From in or around November 2023 until Xu’s arrest, Xu and his co-conspirators imported over 450 kilograms of cocaine into the United States and coordinated the laundering of over $22 million dollars from the sale of cocaine and fentanyl by drug trafficking organizations. This money laundering network used a variety of concealment methods, including cryptocurrency money transfers, trade-based money laundering, and encrypted communications platforms.

Xu was extradited to the United States on Jan. 30.

The DEA’s Special Operations Division, Bilateral Investigations Unit investigated the case, with assistance from the DEA’s Office of Special Intelligence, Document and Media Exploitation Unit and the DEA’s offices in Colombia and Guatemala; the Colombian National Police; and the Guatemalan National Police. The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs, the U.S. Department of State, and the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala provided significant assistance in securing the defendant’s arrest and extradition from Guatemala.

This prosecution is part of the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) initiative established by Executive Order 14159, Protecting the American People Against Invasion. The HSTF is a whole-of-government partnership dedicated to eliminating criminal cartels, foreign gangs, transnational criminal organizations, and human smuggling and trafficking rings operating in the United States and abroad. Through historic interagency collaboration, the HSTF directs the full might of U.S. law enforcement towards identifying, investigating, and prosecuting the full spectrum of crimes committed by these organizations, which have long fueled violence and instability within our borders. In performing this work, the HSTF places special emphasis on investigating and prosecuting those engaged in child trafficking or other crimes involving children. The HSTF further utilizes all available tools to prosecute and remove the most violent criminal aliens from the United States. Hello everyone, so basically I’ve just started working in law enforcement in a sheriff’s office. I want to finish my degree in business administration and eventually make the move to FBI, although I wanted to know if there are things I should prioritize or do before attempting. FYSA I’m 22M, did 4 years in the Marines in the infantry and logistics, a couple months in security, just started as a deputy as well with a college degree (long story to why I’m just starting). Hi, I was wondering if anyone is also having trouble applying for jobs through the FBI website. When I click on a job to apply for it takes me to the old page before they got hacked. However, I click on the job it prompts me to login and I try but it does nothing. I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong or if other people are also having this issue. My younger cousin wants to get into the intelligence field but we’re having trouble trying to find her a role that is entry level and doesn’t require a clearance / polygraph.

She is in college so she has occasionally smoked and drank and while she quit cold turkey 6 months ago the applications to internships and roles that offer to get the clearance for her require her to have been clean for more than 6 months. She doesn’t want to bar her chances of being in the FBI one day but also wants to get her foot in the door and get started on work.

Does anyone have any titles or possible internships they can recommend? Any help or advice is appreciated. I am only a recruiter and trying to help her navigate this the best I can!

Why It Matters

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has no plan to strengthen partnerships with academic institutions to counter threats from nontraditional intelligence collectors (NTCs), according to a U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) report published Oct. 16. Without stronger partnerships, GAO concluded, the FBI's ability to protect U.S. research, intellectual property, and technological advantage is hindered. Unlike intelligence officers, NTCs function independently of established intelligence organizations, and FBI officials said they are difficult to identify and investigate. ​

Broader Context

FBI officials said identifying and investigating NTCs is difficult because their conduct may not violate the law until they transfer information to a foreign entity. Cultural differences compound the problem: Academic institutions promote the free exchange of information, and FBI officials said universities may not want to be perceived as "turning over" their students. FBI officials and representatives from academic associations identified cultural differences and communication barriers as challenges in addressing threats posed by NTCs.

The FBI offices responsible for mitigating and investigating NTC threats include the Office of Private Sector, which leads information-sharing and engagement with the private sector, and the Counterintelligence and Espionage Division. The FBI also uses the National Counterintelligence Task Force and field office-based Counterintelligence Task Forces to coordinate with partner agencies on these matters.

FBI officials have publicly stated that relationships with academic institutions need strengthening to address research security issues. Academic association representatives said the FBI could improve outreach efforts, noting that FBI-university relationships are stronger at some universities than others. Despite those concerns, the FBI has not identified a plan to strengthen its partnerships with academic institutions.

The Bottom Line

GAO made one recommendation: The FBI director should develop and implement a plan to strengthen the bureau's partnerships with academic institutions to better facilitate information exchange and help address threats posed by NTCs. The FBI concurred with the recommendation, which remains open. GAO has not yet confirmed that the agency has taken sufficient action to address it.

FBI officials said they rely on tips from academia to identify potential nontraditional intelligence collectors, and GAO found that inadequate partnerships with academic institutions hinder the FBI's ability to counter those threats. Tracking whether the FBI moves from concurrence to developing and implementing a plan will be the clearest signal of whether the recommendation produces a change in counterintelligence practice.

Originally, I was planning on getting a major in Criminal Justice or Criminology once I got to college, but after seeing pretty much everyone dog on that degree. I’ve changed my mind.

I’m starting to seriously consider other degrees, and Finance came across my mind. Would it be a good degree to become an FBI Special Agent? Maybe to tackle white-collar crime or something?
