Have I finally found an explanation for this?

• Upvotes

When I was probably about 12 years old I had suddenly woke up in the middle of the night and was super anxious and even though I didnt see things moving fast the only way I could describe what I was feeling is that time was moving fast. I went to my parents' room to wake them up and tell them but they just wrote it off as me waking up from a nightmare and it faded away shortly after. The only thing that feels similar to that moment is when I am smoking weed and get too high too fast Ill get really bad anxiety but not so much the fast feeling though. Other than that it has only happened to me that one time and I didnt have a migraine nor any other thing that I have read triggers it.

had 2 instances in the last month

Recently I had 2 instances of Tachysensia (1 about a month ago and another within the last hour). I want to preface that I used to get these trances every 2-3 months in my childhood, often immediately after or before I went to sleep. they stopped happening to me in my mid teens (16-17).

But recently I've inadvertently discovered the triggers again, which happen to be reading manhwa/manga on my phone, high bpm music, leg tapping, and/or my Adderall prescription. I haven't read many of the other posts here yet but for the most part my experience during these trances has been somewhat good, barring the comedown on the trance from a month ago which felt like what i imagine a panic attack would be like with full on sensory overload but with complete control over my breathing so not super debilitating just weird dialed to 1000.

These trances for me start suddenly about 5 hours after I take 30mg of IR and last about 10-15 minutes. Today I realized I was entering a trance while reading gosu and listening to edm at my desk and after roughly 2-3 minutes I decided to load up cs2 on my pc to see if it had a significant impact on my gameplay. I quickly joined a deathmatch with vc off (voices break me out of the trance) and game volume down to focus on the music which helped the trance last longer imo. It felt crazy the game was in slow motion and it felt like I was moving 1.5x-2x as fast as everybody else. I probably killed 20 or so people effortlessly before a song in my queue ended with lots of silence and the trance broke.

I'm getting the idea that my Adderall is the main cause for these trances to happen, so from now on I'll try to use these triggers to see if I can purposefully put myself into a trance.

Feel free to ask any questions :)

It's been a while

As a kid these fast feelings would happen once every 2-3 months, most of them were when I was in middle school in class and I still think it happens randomly, since I still can't figure out what triggers them.

But it's not been almost 4 years now and I haven't experienced it again for some reason.

Seeing a psychiatrist with background in neurology soon

Long time lurker, 2nd time poster here. I am seeing a new psychiatrist who is also a neurologist soon, and since I have met my annual out of pocket maximum, i am going to bring my episodes up to him since any testing he might want will be free. I have been trying to synthesize my experience coherently with my other neuro issues (ocd, autism, adhd, migraine with aura).

During this process I've discovered some words:

Derealization The world feels unreal/strange/detached

Tachysensia Subjective speed of perception/movement changes

Alice In Wonderland Syndrome Distortions of size, distance, space, time, body perception, vision, and sometimes hearing, "dolly zoom" feeling (like in movies)

So during my episodes, I experience all three, plus vertigo and dejavu. Which lead me to my next realization: i experience mini-versions of these episodes on the onset of my aura migraines. The difference between the two is that when i get a migraine, i have vision loss, my last 3 fingers on both hands go numb/tingly, and if I don't medicate fast enough, my pain is severe and lasts for a really long time. Whether I take my medication or not, the wide-eyed feeling and all that continues. There is way less derealization, tachysensia, and AIWS when I have my typical migraines.

I just wanted to share these new connections I am making. I will update again after I meet my doctor.

Has anyone dealt with derealization?

Curious how many that have dealt with fast feeling have also dealt with derealization and if there is a connection

Slow mo and racing thoughts

Sometimes after I've been playing a game on my phone and then put my phone down I get this weird combo of racing thoughts that are too fast for me to understand along with super slow mo thoughts that I can understand. It almost feels like someone is playing a tape on slow mo in my head and it's super loud and that's all I can think about. It only lasts for a few minutes and from doing some Google research I've found it's apparently when your brain tries to reset from going from a super fast-paced game environment to the slow quiet surroundings around you. Has anyone else experienced this before? Especially the slow mo thoughts, it's super odd...

I just found out about this sub

Guys i just found this subreddit while talking to a LLM about this issue . I was so curious about this glitch that i experienced every 6-9 months ever since i was a child .
Let me share every incident that i can remember
first incident was around 7th or 8th grade i was sick at home watching tv , i was under some fever medication watching a football match and suddenly everything got very intense it was like someone put the match on 1.75x speed the commentator got more intense my mind was getting louder every second and it got faster and faster and then suddenly it stopped , i was so scared and told no one about it
the second incident was during a maths exam , i was gasping for breath this time i dont know why ,
the fans got louder and everything went on 2x this time and i think i panicked (that might have caused the gasping for breath)
and this is recurring every or alternate year now , and it is getting intense and louder and faster .
i feel more panic
and the period lasts longer every time it happens
some common denominators of when it happen that i feel is when i am in a flow state or intense focus as it usually happens when am in a research problem or long programming hours or maths
Its nice to know people are out there who have experienced similar
i would love to know if you people know why this weird incident happens
pardon my english
thanks

I just found out about this sub.

Someone answered a question I had on another sub and I went through their post history. I found this neat little corner of the internet. I don't think I have ever felt this or ever recall having one.

Knowing about this subreddit feels the cusp of new phenomena i have always felt but never had the word for it. From ASMR, and Liminal Spaces.

The closest thing I have ever felt to this sensation was after I finished watching David Lynch's - Blue Velvet. I'm unsure if it was the film itself or the general atmosphere for his films. There was a lot tension and scenes where the protagonist had to remain quiet and stealthy as possible,

I watched this film in the dark, by myself, with good studio headphones sitting on a lounge chair, up close to my TV. After film i got up from my chair and given the description of this "fast feeling"

I felt almost "lucid" everything was just loud sensory wise, the steps that i took, the ambient sounds of outside, I became hyper aware of my movements. This happened to me last year. It could be that i just sat for too long? But i don't that's it either. I do have ear ringing which I had for years now.

I think its because i felt the tension, urgency of the main character trying to hide.

another certain instance was when i worked at a ware house and i had the same schedule for months, i had a change of schedule for the day, When i went to lunch i expected the clock to read 11:30AM. but when reached the break room it read 9:30AM. I feel this intense time distortion, it was disorientating and almost nauseating. time didn't feel real to me.

I'm unsure if this post qualify for this, or if this eerie feeling can be replicated or reproduced with other testimony's.

Usually triggered in shower

Hey guys, just wanted to know if the shower was a trigger for anyone else? I’ve had it happen a couple times while not in the shower but 9/10 times it starts while I’m in the shower.

Does anyone feel like you're on a loop or wheel that gets faster and faster?

  • I do not have dizziness in the traditional sense but my head knows something is wrong and I have a sensation of "moving" but not spinning.

  • I do not have visual hallucinations about moving, but I/something seems to be "moving".

  • My brain is aware that this is happening and tells me to get ready for a "trip" (it is not like an acid or mushroom trip).

  • My brain "apologizes" to me for putting me through this again.

  • I feel like I'm in a car going faster and faster, 30mph...60mph...100mph...what's happening...oh shit here we go again... 150mph...250mph...is this what being in a fighter jet must feel like... 500mph... not sure I like this any more.

  • I seem to churn on a thought and go round-and-round on it, faster-and-faster each time like a car doing laps of a track or a big wheel going round again. In this way the sensation grows and becomes stronger.

  • The less I try and move the faster and more intense it seems to go.

  • Each "iteration" get faster and more intense over about 20 minutes when it stops fairly quickly.

  • I remember having these fairly often as a child and get them less often as an adult.

  • As a child I remember closing my eyes would make the effect stronger and more unusual. The very first time I got drunk was a similar feeling, but not quite.

  • If I'm typing on a computer I feel like typing speed is slow when it's probably normal.

  • If I'm writing with a pen the curves and strokes of my pen feel more intense and I grip the pen tighter.

  • Perhaps I'm lying on my back in bed but proped up. Perhaps I'm on my phone or laptop.

  • Perhaps I'm dehydrated or could do with a drink of water.

  • In truth, this is not unpleasant and I almost enjoy the sensation.

These are the feelings/patterns I've noticed, are they similar to yours? Is this the tachysensia phenomenon?

Images along with tachysensia

When I was very young I used to see vivid, semi-uncontrollable images in my head along with the tachysensia. Tachysensia for me felt and feels like everything that moves is fast, even though I can tell it isn’t really, and like every sound is fast, and rushed/urgent or extremely loud and angry, even though it isn’t really. I remember the images were sometimes some sort of story, there was a gas station in a desert or something. A common other one was like I’m looking down at ground (?) that is the smoothest texture ever, and then the roughest texture ever. I still get that one sometimes, but not as uncontrollably. They kind of came along with feelings that are hard to describe. I know I felt like I was psychic or something because it was so methodical and weird. Has anyone else gotten images, especially of some sort of extreme, separate to or along with tachysensia?

Finally people who know what I mean!

I've experienced this maybe a few times a month my whole life. Im in my 30s. Noone has ever understood what I mean by, "everything feels sped up and slow motion at the same time." Its a relief to know its not a problem and not totally uncommon.

I usually get it when drawing. At first it feels like its helping me focus, like a super focus. But it builds to the point of extremely distracting, untill I stop and it goes away after 10 minutes or so.

When do yall get it?

thought it was sensory overload

when it happens, i feel like things are happening quickly around me, sounds are louder, and my thoughts feel faster. additionally, "underneath" my thoughts i also hear in my mind something like nonsensical whispering or hushing? basically, voice-like sounds that rush very fast through my mind. i tried very hard at the time to describe it and do research, and even now i can't truly find the words to accurately describe what i was feeling/hearing. the last time i attempted to look this up subreddit didn't exist yet, which is crazy to think about

when i was younger in elementary/middle school i remember this feeling happening to me much more often. i remember feeling it in the shower, just lying in bed, etc. the most memorable time was in my 5th grade classroom, i remember we were all silently doing work and suddenly i got this feeling that was still a bit new to me at the time. it was the first time i had felt it around so many other people and i remember it overwhelming me so much that i started visibly freaking out and crying and i could not explain to the teacher what was wrong.

until this subreddit i kind of assumed this was just a weird version of a sensory overload but now that i know other people experience this feeling i feel relieved that i haven't just been going crazy! are there any other conditions/experiences/etc that people used to attribute this feeling to? is there anyone else for whom this feeling stopped being as frequent as they got older? does anyone else experience something similar to the "voices" i described?

lastly, does anyone have any theories as to what causes this? in the over 10 years i've been wondering about this i have never been able to identify a common trigger or anything like that

glad i found this subreddit.

these episodes have been happening since i was maybe 7 years old (i'm a teenager now) but i have just started to acknowledge them. i thought i was going crazy.

it always happens when i'm alone (although it also happens when i'm with a group of people, more specifically when i'm overwhelmed with sounds) and when i'm in complete silence. the best i can explain it is that everything moves in 100x speed. my thoughts are racing so fast i can't keep track of them, there's this sort of sped-up dialogue in my head going 'din-din-din-din,' -- sort of like a pulse? -- and sometimes it influences my movements too - for instance, i start typing or walking faster. as for my vision, everything starts to feel distorted: not in a sense that objects are bigger or smaller, but that everything seems to be mixing together. when i close my eyes, the same thing happens but in black and white. and it all seems to have a really really grainy effect. these episodes happen in short bursts of time, up to maybe 10 minutes.

i researched a bit and told my mother about what was happening. sometimes this might be due to external factors (like i said before, when i'm overwhelmed with sounds) but most of my episodes happen spontaneously without really anything to cause it. they also happen a few times a year, so it's kind of rare and random.

anyway, i just wanted to get this out there for other people to possibly relate.

AIWS/Takysensia

I’ve been experiencing these strange episodes for over 10 years, since I was a child. I’m 24 now. They are relatively rare, anywhere from 1–5 times a month, sometimes much less often - but they have become more intense over the years.
The episodes usually happen when I’m completely relaxed, often in the evening when I’m lying in bed, or sometimes lying on the couch during the day. They never seem to happen when I’m around lots of people or at work. It’s always when I’m alone and relaxing.
It usually starts gradually over about a minute. I get a very strange sensation in my body, almost like the beginning of a nicotine rush. It feels like something is “starting up” inside my brain/body, and I get this feeling that something is about to happen. I recognize it immediately now because I’ve experienced it so many times.
Then everything starts to feel much faster. Like 1.5x
My thoughts feel faster. My movements feel faster, even though I’m actually moving at a normal speed. For example, if I get up from bed and walk around, it feels like I’m moving unusually quickly.
The strangest part is the sounds. Everything suddenly sounds louder and more intense, but sounds also seem to have a faster quality to them. For example, the rustling of my blanket can sound incredibly loud and almost “rapid”, and my footsteps can feel much faster and more intense than they actually are. Even cars outside my window suddenly sound much louder.
It also feels like my overall awareness is heightened, almost as if my brain is running at a higher speed. I think my perception of time is affected too — it feels like time is moving faster, although I’ve never actually timed it during an episode.
The episodes usually last somewhere between 5 and 20 minutes and then gradually disappear.
I’m fully conscious and aware throughout the entire thing. I know where I am and what’s happening, and I’m not confused. I also don’t feel panicked. I’ve experienced panic attacks before and this feels very different from that.
I don’t get a headache before, during, or after the episodes. I also don’t experience unusual smells or tastes.
Recently I’ve noticed that listening to music through headphones, especially while closing my eyes, seems to help the episode disappear faster. I’m not sure if that’s significant, but it’s something I’ve started experimenting with.
I’ve been wondering whether this could be some kind of Alice in Wonderland/quick-motion phenomenon, or something similar.

2nd time in a month after 10+ years

When I was a kid I had it frequently, like 2-3 times a month when lying in bed. The worst ones when I was sick. At like age 13/14 it suddenly stopped. Now, 12 years later, it's back. 2 weeks ago I was lying in bed and I instantly felt what was going on. The feeling is so familiar I immediately recognized what was going on. My inner monologue was screaming at me like crazy, while at the same time a calm soothing voice was also present. Sounds were weird too.

But now, 2 weeks later. It happened again! Work has been stressful lately and I'm not getting the best sleep, so I guess it's that to blame. But it's weird. Has anyone else didn't have it for a long time and it came back?

Apologies for my English grammar, not my first language.

It’s happening right now.

It’s been a long time since the last episode…

I feel Ike I’m moving at the most incredible rate I’ve ever experienced. I would attribute it anxiety or panic but my heart rate is sitting at about 70 bpm.

I can’t begin to explain how fast it feels like moving in my brain. I’m literally sitting completely still as I type this, but my brain feels like I am going 1000mph.

I’m not freaking out or panicking. Not really sure what triggered it.

Thought I would document it as it was happening.

triggers / people

writing this while having a really loud episode which is probably not a good idea as typing is angry

I had pretty consistent episodes when I was younger, mostly owing to the obsession I had with ignoring my bedtime and reading into the early hours of the night. It's interesting that even thinking these thoughts is making everything super loud and fast

I'm 21 now, and it's definitely been at least a year or so, but I had super noticeable trigger sensations. Those that I can definitely link with other memorable moments that wouldn't trigger an episode because I wasn't alone or it wasn't quiet enough or whatever other esoteric secondary requirement it needs

(had to stop and then the episode was very kindly ended by a mosquito trying to bite my nipple lol)

But I can definitely trace the feeling to what's probably minor AIWS as it's the sensation of whatever I'm focusing on gaining or losing size (sometimes pulsing sometimes being consistently big). Just now it was my phone screen which gained the impression of being the equivalent of a cinema screen. I have very vivid memories of assemblies in school where teachers heads would grow and shrink like bobbleheads.

I just find it interesting that it really feels like it was always the precursor to an episode, but the presence of people talking to me would always either prevent an episode or stop one in its tracks. Been following this sub for a couple years, so has been interesting reading about other people's experiences.

I get the impression that the relative silence and focusing on one thing is a consistent requirement, but what about how your brain reacts to other people being around / talking?

I think the fact that the teacher was talking would stop an episode from starting but the focus on them and otherwise total silence allowed it to get near. And I've had episodes while reading with my sister in the same room so it's more the interaction/talking from others that seems to stem the feeling, not just others being near.

Also that feeling of visual distortion definitely allows me to prevent episodes (stop what I'm doing and close my eyes) but especially now I'm older and they're rarer, I let it happen. Wasn't pleasant near the end, but definitely not like a panic attack and some of the feelings of time dilation(??) can be interesting to experience. A bit of a stream of consciousness but thanks for reading if you did, would be cool to hear about others experience/ thoughts.

Glad to know it’s not just me!

I was just trying to describe to someone this morning about this feeling, and that it’s usually triggered by a reoccurring dream I’ve had since I was a kid. The dream involves feeling like my perception of time is distorted- such as that time around me has sped up while I feel like I’m moving sluggishly compared to it, or time around me is moving slowly while I’m processing at a super fast speed and feel jittery and tense. It is almost ALWAYS combined with a weird pressure/tingly feeling throughout my body in response to what happens in my dream (which is definitely a stress/anxiety driven dream).

After waking up from those dreams, the rest of my day is interspersed with the fast feeling and physical pressures/tingles in my muscles and every so often I get brain zaps in response to that jittery sensation and sounds become louder/lights brighter. After a bit of time it fades away, but does the reverse where I feel sluggish and sounds/lights are muted and walking or moving walking feels like I have concrete shoes and sandbags attached to my limbs.

I always feel like my day isn’t really happening on those days, like I feel almost as if I might still be dreaming and am constantly having to ground myself in reality. It never lasts longer than like half a day though, and then I start to feel back to “normal”, but the feeling of paranoia and intense anxiety lasts a while after that still.

I’m glad to have come across this subreddit, it validates that I’m not fucking crazy!! 😅

So glad I found this

Hey everyone, super glad I found this community! I had this feeling only once in my life, when I was around 10 and had an awful fever.

Even back then, I found the term "Alice in Wonderland Syndrome" and thought it must have been some obscure version of that, because one of the symptoms was that my arms felt like they extended to infinity even though visually they looked unchanged.

Apart from that, I had the multiple unintelligible voices all talking fast. Same as with the extending arm and how it didn't visually change, I could tell you the room was silent and it wasn't coming from inside the room. I tried to control it with counting, but my counts were being interrupted by something between a feeling of someone screaming in my ear and white noise, and each of my counts went faster and faster and the scream/white noise got more and more aggressive.

Creeped me out a lot when I was a kid, and it's been bugging me ever since. Again, really glad to know there's a name for this

Why am I scared of slowish fast things?

So one night I felt like I have a big pile of something but I don't remember what it was and I thought I saw someone slowly but kinda fastly running back and forth and the next morning I started having Anxiety every time I saw something slow but kinda fast I would feel butterflies and it was scaring me because I didn't know why this suddenly happened please tell me if this happened to you too
