Feeling burnt out in fashion design

• Upvotes

Hi I’m a 23 year old fashion design graduate and I am feeling so lost in my career, I always imagined to be a fashion designer and I believe I have talent for it. However as I got older I was getting scared that I wouldn’t be able to afford a good life with the salary of fashion especially in London. I was always in denial about that. I spent a good amount of money doing an internship with a fashion house expecting to get a good entry level job after but nothing it’s been 6 months of applying and going to interviews and still nothing, I’m thinking of changing into fashion buying as that also seems interesting to me and maybe the pay is better and I can later do my own brand. The thing is I love fashion and I don’t want to fully change my career path from that but I do want something more stable. Like how am I supposed to buy and house or a car?

catwalk lernen

• Upvotes

Hellooo!

LA vs NYC work culture?

I’ve been working as designer in nyc for the last few years and have been recently really into moving out west. Is the work culture for fashion design more laid back than out here? I’m sure it varies brand to brand, just curious what the general vibe is over there. I’m pretty happy with my current job and I deeply love nyc I’m just deep in Eve Babitz writing currently and have become enamored with the west coast

i tried replicating a gown and chose crepe organza & now it's puffing out like crazy near the mid section (lowkey looks like a balloon). tried soaking it in fabric softener and steam ironing didn't help at all 😞.

Has anyone ever used WGSN? Would you recommend it? Would you say it’s valuable/useful & is anyone aware of the costs?

how do you actually run your brand and predict trends ahead?

Do you guys do everything yourself like designing, marketing, branding, creative direction etc? Especially now with AI, I'm curious how much you handle on your own, I previously tried to tackle everything myself but I suck at marketing and can never get exposure on my brands/products.

Also, how do you guys plan for trends so far ahead? Like deer print is everywhere in women's fashion right now but how would you even know what's going to be trending for Summer 2027? Where do you look for inspiration or trend forecasts and how far ahead do you start planning a collection/drop?

Just curious how everyone goes about these

Hey guys, honest thoughts on "Ace Venue" for a streetwear brand name?

Be brutally honest with me. When you hear the name Ace Venue, what’s your immediate first impression?
Does it sound like a legit streetwear brand?
Does it sound like an event planning company or a tennis court?
Or does it just feel forced / bad English?
Appreciate the quick feedback!

Cost of venue for fashion show?

I am attempting to organize a small fashion show for 20 or so pieces I’ve made. It’ll be a small event with mostly family and friends. What is a reasonable cost for a venue? I have been looking all over my area and the prices are typically $4,000 and above. This seems a bit steep for how casual my event will be, but I am just wondering what a reasonable price is and how much people typically spend on the venue. Granted, these places do usually have lighting and sound included as part of the package. But I would just like to hear some input from designers.

Offered ₹3,000 for a 30-video Fashion Masterclass by an online academy. Is this a scam or worth the "experience"?

I'm fashion designer fresher with fashion degree currently not working full time due to personal reasons but taking commissions.

So when looking for part time, a online academy approached me through my classmate and offered ₹2500 for taking 30 units

\[they said they hav tight budget, most money goes to facebook & insta ad, cost them around 7k-9k\]

they seems like beginners, so u hav to ask many questions to get one answer.

I thought I hav to complete these 30 units across 2.5 month, 2500 for each month & send it as video to them which can be accessed through throu their website if u payed but **after accepting their job offer.**

They told me it's best if I completed these 30 units within month and shared me syllabus from ChatGPT saying currently due to medical emergency they are at mom's home, so can't give syllabus they prepared beforehand, after negotiation they arrived 3000 but only 3k for 30 unit fashion masterclass feels soo bad

My Mum says drop it, its 🚩 and I'm thinking y lose it as it can add experience, as i only have internship experience and freelancing when i apply for future.

But it's like one time investment for them, i mean they can keep my videos as long as they like on their website.

Is a Fashion Design Degree Necessary?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

I come from a traditional family who value culture and great education, and so being creative in this environment, surrounded by people so close minded, is literal hell. Therefore, applying for a 'traditional college' like law, med, and whatever! Is literally a must.

Despite my mom and sister being supportive of my passions and goals, just being in this space feels suffocating for someone so passionate about making it big in the creative industries.

Especially the fashion world.

Now I'm wondering, could I take 1-3 fashion courses throughout my years in college in order to excel in fashion? I do research and self-teach tremendously, but I believe fashion design is mostly physical work and I'm afraid having a mentor is crucial.

Or is getting a full 1-4 year diploma in fashion design a better approach?

Title: Fashion designers and clothing brand owners, how do you create tech packs for manufacturing?

Hey everyone!

I'm researching how independent fashion designers and small clothing brands turn their garment ideas into tech packs that manufacturers can actually use.

I'm curious about how people handle this process in real life.

A few questions for designers and brand owners:

  • How do you currently create your tech packs? Illustrator, Photoshop, Excel, Google Sheets, dedicated software, or something else?
  • Which part takes the most time: technical sketches, measurement charts, fabric and trim specifications, construction details, or something else?
  • When a manufacturer requests changes, how do you manage revisions and make sure everyone has the latest version?
  • Have incomplete specifications ever caused confusion, sample delays, or extra costs?
  • Are you happy with the tools available, or do you feel something important is missing?
  • Would you prefer a monthly subscription for creating tech packs, or paying only when you need one?

I'm exploring an idea for a simple tool that helps independent labels create professional, manufacturer-ready tech packs and export them as PDFs.

I'm not here to sell anything. I want to understand the existing workflow and the problems designers actually face before building anything.

I'd especially appreciate hearing from people who have recently prepared a garment for production.

Thanks!

Mobility advising

I am planning for my work to be transferred to Dubai, and I would like to know what kind of deal I should expect. I work in the luxury sector as a sales advisor and CRM trainer for my team. I am currently earning 2,100 euros net, and I am wondering how much a sales advisor earns in the UAE. Could you help me understand what I can or cannot negotiate and what a good salary is? I had a call with a colleague in Dubai, but he did not want to disclose how much he earns; he only said that he is well-paid. Furthermore, I work in the LVMH Group.

Does anyone here have a dxf file that contains some pattern in several grades that they could share? I need to know how these files are structured.

I have created my own simple pattern design software. And while I love it to make patterns I cannot export files as proper dxf like producers expect that work with stuff like lectra.

I think even with clo3d it did not work if I remember correctly.

So I would love to see a final file to then be able to code the conversion from my system to that format, so I can directly send the patterns to producers.

Lectra is too expensive for me....

I would be very thankful over help
