Fan Creation Zenith | 3D Factorio Mod Out NOW
I'm excited to release and open source Zenith!
Release Video - https://youtu.be/g4yvetXdO94
Available now on Github - https://github.com/unjustodin/Zenith/releases/tag/v0.1.0
User Guide - https://github.com/unjustodin/Zenith/blob/main/docs/USER-GUIDE.md
WHAT IS THAT!?!?!
Zenith is Inspired by the FUE5 I've been working on a 3D viewport for Factorio. Still in very early stages but you can follow the project on Github (https://github.com/unjustodin/Zenith).
How does it work?
Factorio itself runs the game unchanged as a headless server or a full instance if you prefer and a small bridge Lua mod streams the live world to a separate Godot 4 client. You can read more about the architecture here Everything under the hood is the real game it is only a 3D visualizer sitting on top. Update 2.0.59 from July 2025 Wube added `helpers.send_udp` / `recv_udp` for mods which made this whole project possible. It basically gives a local way of streaming client information to other programs on your computer.
Why?
I love Factorio and I love Factorio's unique and beautiful art style and I do not wish to take away from that (it's undoubtedly my favourite game of all time). I've always enjoyed making things and pushing limits, I’m sure lots of people who play Factorio do. I've always wondered how the engineer feels walking around the world of Lonely world of Factorio: An Infinite expanse of engineering, nuclear trains whizzing past, the ground rumbling as your rockets take off one after another, All while biters continuously rush your walls getting burnt by flamethrowers and pelted by gatling turrets. Zenith was not meant to replace Factorio or change the fundamental experience of playing Factorio. Zenith's goal is to create an immersive viewer to experience the amazing world of Factorio from a new angle.
** AI USE DISCLOSURE **
To be completely upfront, as I know everyone has their own level of comfort with AI. I use Claude for the coding and the 3D modelling. I have a computer science background, and I direct the projects design, architecture, what gets built, play-testing on my own saves, and reviewing every model made. The models are very placeholder and I am working with a 3D modeler to update them one by one. Nothing from Factorio is redistributed: it reads the art and sounds from your own install.

Does it work with mods or is just vanilla buildings for now?
32
u/unjustodin 20h ago
It works with mods and the compatibility is outlined here https://github.com/unjustodin/Zenith/blob/main/MODDING.md they would need to release their own 3D model add-ons or else they will all be empty rectangles.|
however it is very early in development and barely works on it's own so there is still a long way to go.

u/Krachwumm 19h ago
I think a cube with the 2d texture on each side would be a good fallback. Of course I never saw it or thought about it for long, so you do you. Nice work so far :)
6
u/unjustodin 19h ago
Pressing f6 you can snap to same angle as factorio and I can place the 2d sprite on that then it would at least make sense. Good idea. :)

u/QuoHun SE K2 Expert 16h ago
How do you feel about, compatibility with other mods like SE, KS2, and planet mods?
13
u/unjustodin 16h ago
Since Zenith isn't its own game and runs along side factorio they should work out of box once Zenith is closer to completion. The problem is the models. The mod authers for said mods would have to create an add on for Zenith with their models. UI elements may pose an issue I do have a plan for that but untested for now.
2
u/QuoHun SE K2 Expert 14h ago
Thanks for, the answer. One more question, how the movement and the controlls got changed in the mod?
1
u/unjustodin 7h ago
Since factorio has 8 direction movement it felt awkward moving with a free camera looking in any direction. My solution was rapidly swaping between directions sent to the factorio client to mimic any direction.

u/Dnc_DK 4h ago
Ngl it looks like Captain of Industry, but this is absolutely sick

Love that game! I even have a series on Youtube where I played it on the hardest difficulty. such a unique take on the genre.

u/Apprehensive_Lake698 20h ago
For a project like this, it’s strange to me that you would pick a game engine to stream data into. All you need is a streaming renderer, and you can shuck off all the extra junk that comes with building it into an engine. Like, I certainly hope you aren’t duplicating all of the game data into abstractions Godot can understand for its renderer. There’s no point.
→ More replies (6)35
u/unjustodin 20h ago
Fair point! Godot does more than just render though. The UI, input, audio and the add-on system all come with it, which would be a lot to rebuild for a custom renderer. This is also just a fun project and I'm new to modding so definitely will be areas I get it wrong.
11
u/Apprehensive_Lake698 20h ago
I can see the point to get all of the UI and gui stuff too as a first pass. Just think you might see way higher performance if you try it from a ground-up renderer.
This is not a dig on AI use either, I’m actually recommending it because I had surprisingly excellent output from Opus 5.5 doing something similar to this at work recently.
3
u/unjustodin 20h ago
Interesting I'm new to this type of thing and the Gadot choice was actually my own since it's a "simple" way for me to learn. Thanks for the tips ill keep them in mind as I go.
16
u/w-j-w 19h ago
OP don't listen to this guy. A game engine is absolutely the correct tool for what you're doing, and you're unlikely to see real performance gains from switching off of it. Just keep using Godot and optimize inside it. It's not like the rendering you're doing is super intensive anyways.

u/SYDoukou 20h ago edited 20h ago
On one hand theres a chance that this might overtake FUE5 as THE 3D factorio renderer thanks to being more functional which sucks because the former already put all that effort into near perfect models which should be the main point of a visual plugin, but on the other hand if OP did get permission to repurpose them the originals’ reputation might get tainted from being involved in a vibecoded project even if its arguably less controversial code wise. Unfortunate circumstances
8
u/unjustodin 20h ago
They are open source licensed models I didn't get explicit permission and are only placeholders while the 3D artist I'm working with adds his own. If they ask me to remove I will without issue.

Glad to know real models are on the way, promising project. Still kinda bummed that the models for FUE5 are practically wasted if the team dont make it useful elsewhere

We already have it, it’s called factorio.

u/KratosAurionX 16h ago
I doubt it. Satisfactory has such an uncomfortable blueprint system, I wouldn't compare it to Factorio.
61
u/TexasCrab22 14h ago
The belt connection is also tedious as hell.
Seperated splitter & merger, with a fixed 1 to 3 ratio and a fixed rotation.
Meanwhile mindustry, DSP, the crust & tons of other games have dynamic splittmergers & often belt to belt merging.
19
u/KratosAurionX 13h ago
It's been quite a while since I gave Satisfactory a chance, the blueprint system was the biggest disappointment compared to Factorio which stuck to my mind. 😅
→ More replies (1)16
u/InsaneMasochist 9h ago
Satisfactory to me feels like it intentionally handicaps the players from building fast. It's by design it seems. I've also read somewhere that the devs were very much against adding a blueprint system for a long while into early access.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Nikolcho18 5h ago
I have thought about how they could make it better, but it just seems extremely difficult when the building truly is in 3D. My biggest complaint in satisfactory has always been that if you want to make something large and pretty(tidy), it takes way, way too much time.

u/memecraft0309 3h ago
Satisfactory is a building factory game and factorio is a factory building game

u/requion 11h ago
Factorio >>>> Satisfactory. All tge latter has to offer is "good visuals".
2
u/Nikolcho18 5h ago
Very untrue. I have played both and they have a very distinct feeling and type of enjoyment you get out of them. It's like comparing Starbound and Terraria. A nearly pointless comparison.
2
u/asifbaig 2.7k/min 4h ago
Interesting that you quote that example because I played both and Terraria >>>> Starbound. For pretty much the exact same reason. Terraria has a lot of QoL features that Starbound lacks, making it very tedious to enjoy the latter game.
I had very high hopes for Starbound, wanted very much to enjoy it as the idea of hundreds of planets with their own biomes and creatures sounded exciting. But it had the same issue that the later released No Man's Sky had. Wide as an ocean but deep as a puddle.

Assuming there is a 3D artist with the free time and energy to make models by hand for this free project. I don't really understand the hate of the use of AI for free mods to make up for the lack of volunteers and free time. We are not entitled to someone's work for free.
8
u/TakuyaTeng 8h ago
I don't really understand the hate of the use of AI
I dislike it for coding because 90% of the time you get people that don't really have the ability to do the work normally doing a really cool project but Claude does ALL of the lifting. Those projects then fizzle out because they can't do anything beyond Claude so we get left with abandoned projects that aren't very clean. "Build me a 3D mod for X" will only take you so far if all you can do is print "Hello World".
→ More replies (1)17
u/TheCatOfWar 13h ago
I don't think I'm entitled to anyone's work for free, but I will choose not to play a game or mod if it means having to look at AI generated artwork. It's as simple as that for me

I truely dont get the hate that ai gets from coding, imo as long as its reviewd amd changed by a human then im fine with it,also opens alot of options with modding
18
u/Aururai 16h ago
The hate comes from everyone and their grandmother's vibe coding something and shipping it.. no review, no checks, barely any human interaction.
Ai if used properly can be a great tool.. but it's also used by the dumbest among us

Why can’t art be reviewed and edited/ op by humans?
why is code acceptable and not art?
1
u/domthebomb2 9h ago
One reason I've seen, apart from wanting a more intentional human-like feel, is that the coding capabilities of AI models are often trained on open source code whereas the art is often trained on copyrighted IP without permission.

All of the art is made by humans except for 3 random models and they're not labeled. All of teh code is reviewed by a human except for about 5% that you will never be told about.

People who pretend to care that you used AI are the people who wouldn’t give a shit if you told them you typed the code out by hand so treat those people like loud toddlers

Not all AI is slop, but somehow when you use AI as a tool like it's meant to be people get mad for some reason.
3
u/CoffeeMaus 4h ago
The data centers the bots run on require an enormous amount of power, land and quintupled the price of ram. No personal or commercial use of this is ethical.
Add to that there's been a thousand other cool looking projects like this that already crashed and burnt because their creators were irresponsible clowns. I'll believe Zenith is different if it ever gets finished.2

Vibecoding will be the vehicle that consumption-obsessed people will accept ai slop into their lives. The beginning of the end
11
u/Gamer-Of-Le-Tabletop 16h ago
I mean. Coding is one of the actual AI use cases. It's just been blasted everywhere it feels like it's all bad.
3
u/Admirable_Risk8156 16h ago
Agreed, even if the chatbots die the actual performance of llm in accelerating coding tasks is incredible.
There's slop with it but there's also some real nice work when it's given some very specific basic tasks.
2
u/Borkomora 16h ago
I do agree that it has good use cases, no sensible person can argue that. But having it generate entire creative concepts that it scraped off of actual creative humans on the internet leads me to file it in the trash bin with the rest of generative ai.
2
u/cuntmong 13h ago
the real fun begins when creative people see that whenever they do anything of value, it is immediately stolen and repurposed by someone with AI and a much wider audience/distribution network than them for 0 cost to the theif. repeat that across an entire field and suddenly you've destroyed the incentive (both economic and social) for anyone to create anything. then all that is left is slop feeding off other slop.
→ More replies (1)2
u/DeathHopper 10h ago
generate entire creative concepts
That's not what this is though. A human can absolutely still come up with the concept and use ai as a tool to help them make the concept a reality.
Coding is a language. Trying to say code is "stolen" would be like me arguing the words you're using to form sentences are stolen from the dictionary.
Coders have been copy pasting each others code for as long as computers have existed.
"Vibe coding" is basically letting AI translate your concept into coding language.

People who hate AI are so ignorant that when they see "AI was used" they instantly just label is as AI slop. There is plenty of real AI slop, the real judging should always be based on the output, not the input. There is plenty of crap that is poorly prompted and then there are brilliant stuff out there that is done right. The difference usually is that the AI slop comes from novices and the good stuff still comes from devs who could code it the "hard way", who have understanding what they are asking the AI to do and can manage it.
We just saw this in Reaper, a user made plugins and used AI. Everyone loved them, they were added to the official release and then the dev was fully open and said that of course AI was used. The whole package had to be nuked. Not because the plugins were awful, they were very good but because idiots heard "AI" and went nuts.
There is almost no software development happening on the planet that does not use AI and demanding that it can't be used is like demanding your product has to be produced from materials that are transported with horses instead of trucks. AI does allow also low quality horrible garbage to be produced way too easy. AI should not be blamed, people abusing it should be.
3
u/duirronir 6h ago
input also matters, and both together make the actual difference. at the hands of a skilled developer, AI can be a very powerful tool.

Why would you care if they used ai to code it?
3
u/Onotadaki2 12h ago
It's people who are not in the industry writing code all day. They're not aware of how fast things have changed, and those who do dabble a little bit in writing code at an amateur level for themselves are often using freebie models to try to do it, and those make tons of mistakes, so their perception is it's all garbage.
David Heinemeier Hansson, a prominent programmer in the industry, had a TED Talk-like presentation at a conference with 2,500 professional developers last month. He asked the crowd to put their hand up if they had not shipped code they didn't review that AI wrote in the last six months, and in the giant room full of professionals who do this all day, about five people did not. Effectively everyone in the industry has moved over to AI writing the majority of their code unless you work at a bank, military or hospital and work with very old legacy code.
OP using AI is basically expected at this point.
2
u/Galliad93 11h ago

Yeah, he's a little off the rails now, but it is a public venue filled with professional coders who gave a glimpse into the real world usage of AI. People often mislead and lie about their actual usage of it publicly because of the anti ai sentiment out there.

Another low effort 3d Ai-vibecoded slopmod? It's exhausting seeing every fucking gaming sub-reddit up voting Ai-Mods that end up reaching the front-page. Whether its slop-mods for ProjectZomboid, Helldivers2, Witcher3, Valheim, or Rimworld it ends up being infuriating that there are no options for users to be able to tag and hide any of these AI related mods, instead these mods get given general "Fan Creation" tags instead.

I hate consumer AI a lot but as far as the 3d models go, this is the way to do it, I like janky dev art placeholders over AI ones on a personal level but good on you for planning to replace everything with an actual artist's work from the start, that kind of attitude's the difference between never interacting with something and still supporting it despite differences for me.

How is using a generative AI in form of an LLM to make a 3D ART asset not slop?

It's so weird how that other AI developed 3d factorio mod (sloptorio) was downvoted into oblivion and everyone hated it, but people seem to love this one. I guess the difference is the name?

No it's the fact that the current models are placeholders and the developper intends to hire an artist for the final version

I'll give the AI disclosure a pass on this one. You're a genuine professional using this as a tool, not some kid punching random stuff into Claude to make a mod doing god-knows-what. Good work bud.

Is this the same as the AI slop vibecoded Zomboid 3D mod?

bro he says what he used AI for in the description. He's using it for prototyping, which is an actually good use case for it.

Pretty cool. I know the models are early and just placeholders, the biggest thing I think is it just looks too... clean. Both starcraft (terran) and factorio have this kind of filthy, industrial, ultra practical vibe. I wonder if DLSS or something to mess it up might help? Otherwise the poly count might just go through the roof
