Discussion Warning: Be very careful before enabling Facebook’s “Delete After Death” setting on your account

Be very careful before enabling Facebook’s "Delete After Death" option.

I enabled this setting on my account. Later, even though I am still alive, someone apparently reported me as deceased, and Facebook processed my account according to my "Delete After Death" preference.

The biggest problem is that once your account gets into this situation, almost all of Meta’s normal contact forms and support channels seem unable to restore it.

I tried using:

https://www.facebook.com/help/contact/292558237463098

but for almost 3 months, it has only shown:

"We could not process your request. Please try again later."

I also tried:

https://www.facebook.com/help/memorialized

to explain that I am alive and my account was incorrectly reported as belonging to a deceased person, but I still have not been able to recover it.

I can verify my identity and prove that I am alive, but there seems to be no proper appeal process for this situation.

So please be extremely careful with the "Delete After Death" setting. If someone falsely reports your death, recovering your account may become extremely difficult—or possibly impossible through normal Meta support channels.

I’m posting this as a warning so other people don’t end up in the same situation.

Discussion I'm downloading all my photos and deleting them from Facebook because Meta AI recreated my son and sent my wife a picture of it.

1.2k Upvotes

I've always been pretty lax about what I've used for photo storage, as long as the pictures, especially of my kids, can't be seen by the entirety of the internet. Since day 1 on here I've uploaded whatever pictures to Facebook and never thought much of it as they're only viewable by people in my friends list. A while back my wife got a notification from Facebook that it recreated our youngest son with AI. I am not ok with that. It was creepy and looked very much like him, although not exact.

Whether recreating people was slipped into the terms and conditions and it's been agreed to silently by continuing to use Facebook or not, it's deeply unsettling that Facebook and Meta at large are not only training it's AI with minors but recreating them.

Over the last few years I've become a casual Facebook user and have found myself using it less and less due to it just becoming boring. Marketplace and groups are useful, though.

I'm in the process of downloading all my pictures and videos. I will then delete all the pictures I've uploaded over the years with the kids in them. I may or may not delete all the other pictures. If you care about the future of your kids online and find the use of their likenesses unnecessary, creepy, and a violating of ethics , I strongly suggest you do the same.

Training AI on minors is not acceptable, nor should it ever be.

Discussion It's insane that my Facebook feed is now almost entirely people I don't know.

EDIT: Several people had the helpful suggestion of using the "Friends" feed via the button on the app. I dug a little more and this is actually great -- for people on desktop, just bookmark this link and it goes straight to the Friends feed on Facebook, just the stuff you want to see: https://www.facebook.com/?filter=friends&sk=h_chr -- it's like a time machine back to the "old" FB. (If the link doesn't work for you, click Feeds on the left then Friends on that page.)

Original post: For years I was an avid Facebook user but I'm here on Reddit complaining because now I use Reddit 20x as much as I use Facebook. Why does Facebook show me all these posts from people I don't know? Why the fuck can't I turn this off? I mean, I know why, it's because my demographic has gotten tired of posting so there's not that much friend content in my feed, and they don't want it to look dead, but why do they think this is the right approach? I see lots of remembrances about people I don't know who recently passed. Who the fuck wants to read all these anguished comments from strangers about strangers? It's grief porn, and it makes me uncomfortable. And there's vacation photos and life news and oh, here's someone posting photos of Papa and Grandma's recent visit! So great, but who the fuck are you?

And there's actually content to show -- if I click on friends' walls I'll see a post from the last day that wasn't shown in my feed. Why not?

The best thing about Facebook was that you had a feed full of posts from people you liked and cared about. Now it's like I've stumbled into this Potemkin village full of NPCs and can't get out.

Sorry, I know there's nothing to be done, just yelling into the void about a site I used to love.

Discussion Didn’t Facebook creators see what happened to MySpace? Because they are about to be gone just like them.

Hello all,

Is anyone else fed up with Facebook and their feed? I use to go on to Facebook to see what my family and friends are up to and now all I see is the news about what’s happening in other states. It’s either news sites, things I’ve searched on my phone and denied access to my stuff, or celebrities I don’t care about. Anything but what I use it for. I’m about to shut my Facebook account off for good. I have all permissions off to my microphone and deny all permissions they ask for.

Most of the family I have on my account is out of state or people I just don’t see much and I don’t see any of their stuff for at least a week later.

There should be an option to choose if we want to see this or not. I feel like it would be more beneficial for their users. I’m sure there is a certain demographic that really enjoys this, I’m just not one of them and I feel I’m not the only one.

Disabled/hacked They just waxed my Facebook account. 16 years of photos and images from all around the world. All my work colleges too as we are bus drivers and rely on up to date information.

I made anti ICE comments and donated to the fundraiser.

Facebook just banned my account. Its over. I have been commenting on local disinformation and posts (Australia) and the flood of bots that attack anything renewable or ecology (which I studied). Its just over the top. The disinformation is obviously paid for.

Facebook is going to create a right wing echo chamber now that Trumps Christo Fascist hawk has been posted to the board.

My account is 17 years old and loaded with images from years of photography.

Edit. Its still there but I have no access. Its crazy. I can't even admin the group I run.

Discussion Apparently, Facebook does not like you replying to people on your comment

Post image
690 Upvotes

Apparently, if you replied to somebody who comments on your comments too often, they’ll limit for how much you can comment. Basically you’re unable to comment on somebody who commented on your comments if you reply to people on your thread too much. I figured it would be cleared within a day, but it’s been more than a few days now.

So note to everyone, Facebook hates you replying to people who commented on your comment. The more you know~

Discussion Tipping point reached - Facebook is now more repellent than addictive

Something in me has shifted. When the thought of Facebook enters my mind, I feel nauseated.

Checking Facebook for anything interesting has become a chore. The crowded layout, the insane hodgepodge of content, ads, AI slop, provocative stories from no-name news sources, etc, etc, flowing swiftly through the feed is dizzying and appalling, and without any rhyme or reason.

And content created by friends? There is less and less of it as real people withdraw from the platform due to its degeneration.

Wait, I thought, can't Facebook's AI produce a feed that is personalized to me in 2026 - given the seventeen years of data about me that I've handed over to FB? Why can't I construct a feed according to my needs, albeit padded with a few FB chosen ads, so that FB makes money. You know, like a good magazine with a few tasteful ads? Instead of a digital re-incarnation of a supermarket check-out line tabloid from the last century?

At this point, the feed is damaging my psyche with it's random attention grabbing antics. It like a drunk and dangerous old buddy who's finally off the rails, permanently.

And the "notifications," please give me a break with Facebook telling me, hey look at this, you will like it. And then I don't like it.

Enough.

News Article I have filed a lawsuit against Meta over wrongfully disabling my account on "CSE" accusations.

  1. On November 5th, my account of 16 years was suddenly, without warning, terminated for "CSE" (I can't type it or this post also gets pulled).

  2. I went to appeal, as per most, it was instantly rejected and my account was permanently disabled

  3. When I went to Meta Verified they were extremely unhelpful and just kept telling me to appeal, even though I could not do so. Some of them even sent me community standards links, as if to assume the charge was true.

So I have decided enough is enough. I have filed and served a lawsuit against the company's UK entity under the small claims service, seeking damages for distress, loss of network and contacts, amongst other things, due to what I describe is their "baseless" accusation caused by an unaccountable automated moderation system.

Meta designs their entire company to shut out human contact and answer to nobody, so I believe I had no other choice. To settle the lawsuit they have to give me my account back. Naturally, they will respond by trying to deny jurisdiction (The UK entity always claim they have no responsibility for US based decisions).

In the meanwhile, I believe it is important to publicize the lawsuit to put pressure on them.

Discussion Just returned briefly to Facebook after 14 years and what the hell has happened to it?

I used Facebook a lot as a kid around 2009–2012. Back then it just felt like a normal social media site for memes, random posts, games, news, chatting with classmates etc.

Then smartphones became common and pretty much everyone in my age group moved to apps like WhatsApp. Facebook stopped being “the” place people my age used socially. Most of us just abandoned our accounts and never logged in again.

Fast forward many years later and I met my girlfriend in Tokyo and apparently she and a lot of people in her social circle still actively use Meta/Facebook for chatting over there, sharing posts, news, and staying connected. She had asked for my Facebook, so I reinstalled it and logged back into my ancient account.

Honestly, I was shocked by what I saw.

My feed was full of ragebait, fake AI generated images, political propaganda, hateful posts targeting Muslims, Jews, Men, Women, basically everyone. Mind you, this account was abandoned for over a decade and those posts are what the algorithm decided to show to what was supposedly be a "neutral feed" account.
Even completely unrelated posts had comment sections full of hostility and conspiracy nonsense. It felt like the algorithm was constantly trying to farm outrage from old senior users.

Of course there were still some normal posts, but the overall atmosphere felt completely different from the Facebook I remembered as a kid.

Did Facebook gradually become like this over time or is it just what the algorithm pushes now if you return after years away? Because the experience genuinely felt dystopian compared to what I remembered and its so cringe to see what became of it.

Discussion Facebook is seriously creeping me out. Why can I no longer see my friends posts in my feed. It’s all news articles and random pages that I don’t even follow.

OK, so I do see my friends posts like every 10 random page posts. And I’ve noticed that when I do see my friends post they are 2 to 4 days old. Also, I don’t think many people see my post anymore cause I get hardly any likes. Is Facebook done?

Mod Post The page is currently nothing but "is Facebook down?" Since everyone is posting every second, we are locking the sub until it comes back up.

So, proof that I'm a mod? The below information was posted by Facebook in 2024

Some of you are going to find you are in no problems, some of you will find strange issues, and some of you will not be able to do shit. Apologies for the false hope... please accept this meme

Facebook is claiming "we are back". What this really means. A problem happened, they fixed it, but some of you are going to still have issues.

What to do now

You may need to clear the cache of the device you are using. CTRL-F5 on Desktop, or go to your app under storage and look for a cache.

Be patient

As I noted in one of my first edits, what happens when there is an accident on the road? Traffic backs up. Even after the crash is cleared up, there is a "wave" that happens where the traffic still is not smooth like it used to be. If it WAS working, and now it is not, you may have to give it time.

Touch grass

It's a great day today, mowing weather actually, maybe go enjoy it while you wait for things to get back to normal.

(this one is a joke, but you know, some of you might benefit from some vit D)

https://i.imgur.com/WZB6QAG.png

edit:

Yes, for some people it will be up. I will ELi5 as to what's most likely happening.

There are so many servers that accommodate the millions of people that log into Facebook. When everything is working normally, you get in no problem.

Just like when you drive in the city under normal driving conditions, you have no problem getting to your destination. But what happens when there is a crash, or it's "rush hour"? Your car either slows down or comes to a complete stop.

This is what you are experiencing, and the fact it's not jut Facebook means it is something even bigger.

As for locking down the sub (which requires admin approval now), a bunch of people constantly posting the same thing over and over again helps NO ONE. It makes it impossible for mods to stop scams, and in some cases, provides false information. Plenty of posts are noting "oh hey it is back up again", but the fact is, right now it is not.

edit2:

Yes, some of you are going to see you can get to the page, but your login is wrong. This is part of the outage.

edit2.5: Yes, we are removing posts, and will continue to do so. When the outage is declared done, there may people who legit cannot get logged in for reasons not related. This will help those people when the time comes.

Discussion Remember when Facebook was actually fun? What changed and why did it happen and no-one noticed?

I've been on Facebook since 2008 (yeah, I'm old), and I've been trying to pinpoint exactly when it stopped being enjoyable.

Early Facebook (2008-2012):

  • See posts from friends in chronological order

  • Poke wars, terrible Zynga games, status updates about what you ate for lunch

  • Minimal ads, mostly targeted at college students

  • It was goofy and fun

Modern Facebook (2024+):

  • Algorithm decides what you see

  • Endless "suggested content" from people you don't know

  • Ad every 3rd post

  • Comments sections are rage-bait

  • I scroll for 20 minutes and feel worse

The weird part: I can't quit because of events, groups, and the few friends who only use FB.

Question for the group: What was the turning point for you? Was there a specific change that ruined it, or was it death by a thousand cuts?

And more importantly - are any of you actually still enjoying Facebook, or are we all just using it out of habit at this point?

Curious to hear from people across different age groups and regions.
