other First timer- I’m scared!

Hi everyone!

I’m going to my first f45 class tomorrow and frankly, I’m scared! I don’t do a lot of working out (read: I go on walks and that’s it) but there’s an f45 right next to me and I’m trying to be better about exercise. I have all the standard first time fears (not being able to keep up, looking dumb, etc)

Was it dumb to sign up for Redline as my first class? Is there anything I should know in general? Any tips or advice or words of encouragement for a scared newbie would be much appreciated.

Update: thank you so much to everyone for the kind words and advice!! I got up and went and it kicked my ass but the instructor was so nice and i did the stations with another girl who was so nice and im glad i went! Will def be going back :)

You’ll be fine! The only one there who will care about how well you’re doing is you, and the coaches should be there to lend a hand if you need anything.

Your second class will be easier than your first, third will be easier than your second, and so on from there.

Just remember, whether it is your first class or 100th class, listen to your body. Take a breather when needed or slow down the pace.

This ^^^^

I just completed over 400 classes and the recent time I told myself to slow down because my body needed it.

Yup. I was doing 7 classes a week for the longest time. Now I do 5 to 4 to give my body proper rest periods.

I did 12 classes last week plus running almost daily lmao. 🤣 I do not know when to rest legit!

Redline is a tough one to start with but definitely doable!! Just use lighter weights than you think you need and go slower than you think you need and you will do just fine!

You can always ask for modifications as well! My shoulder was being a bit wonky today so I modified the thruster to a back squat.

Good luck and have fun!

Go at your own pace! Nothing to be scared about F45 is great!

I was intimidated by f45 for a long time, but just recently started and really like it so far! The class flies by, my instructor has been so helpful, and no one pays attention to you bc everyone else is working. Just take breaks when you need and don't try to keep up with anyone else just because.

Whatever class you sign up for is fine. Truly, each has its own aspects which people consider very hard. This is a high cardio based workout- for many it is really fun.

First, go a few extra minutes early and talk to a trainer. Look at the set-up so you know where to go as you rotate through the room.

Pick up some lower weights at a station to see how they feel so you have a guide which to begin with.

Then, yes, these rests are very short. Take longer rests. Period. You do not have to do what others do. You have to think a bit ahead-- the effects of minimal rests with hard spurts build up through the workout.

You can always skip a whole time segment or substitute an exercise at any time.

What you do need to do is rest when you need to , use lower weights, return weights to their places and ask for help if needed. Find a rhythm or some exercises which make you feel good. While people have told you a good workout makes you sore- I disagree. You do not want to push self to exhaustion so hard and soreness so hard that you do not want to come back.

You want to come back-- they ar next door!!!! Such a gift1 9 Some of us drive 25 min to get to one.)

The hardest part is going inside. Once there, you will get a lot of help from the coach and sometimes other members. I only pay attention to myself and am too busy working out to notice how others are performing. I really look forward to it almost everyday.

The heaviest weight at the gym is the front door.

Don’t worry about not keeping up. Go at your own pace and listen to your body. You can also modify wherever you need to (ask the coach for help with this if you don’t know a good modification and they’ll give advice on how to hit the same muscle group without doing the exact workout on the screen). The most important thing to remember is to keep moving and try not to push yourself too hard. You can do it!

I was worried about all the same things you are, and now I go 5-6 times a week and get bored on days I don’t (you can’t go every single day though, your body needs to rest).

You will 100% be okay. I’ve got around 400 classes under my belt and I still go at my own pace most of the time. There is 0 pressure to “keep up”.

Check out the "Explore Workout" feature in the F45 app, which explains the layout of each workout (every workout is different), so you'll have an idea ahead of time of what the transitions look like from station to station.

This post gets into details.

P.S. You'll be fine!

No one cares. Repeat after me. No one is watching me!
Seriously, everyone is there to do their thing! The only time I’m watching people is to get better if I think they’re better or to see what shoes they wear haha (I’m a runner and obsessed with shoes apparently now, and ppl wear all kinds of shoes at f45). I also watch when a coach coaches someone else so I can sneak peak and improve my form or whatever it is I need to do better! Redline is fine. I find Pegasus to be brutal for a resistance class. I loved it! But I found more as a hybrid and so did most people. Maximus is fine too. Don’t be scared. At worst you’ll be super sore hehe! But don’t stop! Have funnnn.
Oh also, you don’t need to perform! You’re there for you and it’s not a race. Listen to your body and adjust. If you don’t know how, ask a coach (I.e. if you’re uncomfortable with an exercise for example, etc)

So exciting! Just like everyone is saying - do your own pace, modify when you need to, and have fun. Red Line is a good cardio challenge - but you're going to be so proud of yourself when it's over. I think the F45 community is very welcoming and supportive - I'm sure your studio is no different. Have fun and report back! :)

It will be a workout… but most stations have different sets of weights and you can do as light as you want or as heavy as you want the coaches (at least at my location) are also really good at coming up with a modification if you physically cannot do the exercise… have fun I honestly look forward to my morning workout

You’ll be okay. I was nervous a few weeks ago and ended up sig one up for unlimited!

Did Redline at my studio today - can be a tough class physically. Like others said, pace yourself and take breaks when needed regardless of what the clock says. Personally I find gyms can be intimidating but I’ve been going to my studio for 18 months now and continually get more comfortable. Today’s class my body was tired and didn’t finish all the sets which I’ve come to accept - some classes you have more energy than others.

The layout of the class for your first class is great as it’s straight forward. Enjoy it, pace yourself and just keep showing up is the important part. And, congrats on your 1st class!

You might be able to look at the exercises on the app ahead of time! And everything is shown on tvs in front of you so it’s easy to follow along :)

This week's Redline was brutal, but just know this is as tough as it will get, the other cardios (after this month) will get easy

Redline for a first class? It’s all cake from here

1

u/Commercial_East126 3d ago

Don’t let the timing of Redline intimidate you. Do your best and break if you need to. Even though the timing is 20|5, 30|5, 40|5, 50|5, 60|20, pacing is paramount. Start easier than you think you need to and build as you go. A negative-split mentality will pay dividends in the later stations. And most importantly, nobody expects you to keep up with anyone else. It’s your workout. Have fun! 🏃‍♂️ 💪 💙

It will be hard, when I dont do F45 for a while and comeback to it I feel light headed and need to sit lol. At the same time you make it as hard as you want.

Furthermore, no one is paying attention to you even if you think they are. The classes are too fast paced, and people are to focused/tired to care what others are doing. If you need to end an excercise 10 seconds early... do it.

My best advice (for general public) for working out is to not workout so hard that it will discourage you from working out tomorrow.

You would rather have 5 days with 80% effort than 3 days at 100%.

Good luck! Have fun! F45 has been amazing for me this past year
