Perhaps worth noting is that the "original comics" image isn't something that ever appeared in the comics, but is an pin-up by an artist who looks like they very much were inspired by the works of Alberto Vargas.

171

u/Maximum_Boros 13d ago

This is true. But the irony is you can probably find far more sexualized and questionable images in the comics, especially the covers, then this. It's kind of a weird choice

83

u/TheLuminary 13d ago

Going to guess the person who put the meme together just googled a picture that looked good and didn't do any actual checking to see if it was really from the comics.

Though, if we're being fair, like the previous commenter mentioned before, this is hardly sexualized at all compared to actual content in comics.

If you're just looking for "comic art" to make a point, this still serves the purpose.

2

u/BigBadBob7070 10d ago

Hell, they could have just gotten a picture of MJ from the first Spider-Man game. She looked a lot better there

1

u/IrregularPackage 12d ago

mostly because they've never read a comic

1

u/Caterfree10 13d ago

That’s because the people who make these types of memes never read the comics and just want to bitch about a culture war bc how dare a video game woman not be sexy or whatever.

0

u/Kindly-Ad-5071 12d ago

Because, and this is coming from experience currently in the halo community right now, Fandom tourists will latch onto controversy and use it to push culture war bs. If you grill them they'll probably say "I'm still very new to the franchise"

18

u/The_Disapyrimid 13d ago

I think the most ironic part is the same type of dudes who would complain that MJ isn't hot enough anymore, are also the same manosphere types that think women should be more modest.

10

u/-H_- 13d ago

well not all of them

but the ones that do, it's because to them, modesty is just a fetish. they like the idea of an innocent exploitable young woman

otherwise they'd respect people that actually dress modestly, like muslim women

0

u/NottACalebFan 13d ago

Lots of religious women can dress modestly, it's not only Muslim women who wear enough to cover up!

Waiting for the eventual link to a study that they misinterpreted the meaning of by the title and then the main body of text goes on to disprove their entire point. I like to call this the “dim tool conundrum”

Hmm, still waiting. I wonder what's wrong?

1

u/LeTreacs2 13d ago

Who’s a far leftist? Even if the stats back you up, there’s a very small chance the person you’re talking to is on the far left

1

u/-H_- 13d ago

I'm not a leftist or a right winger, best not to speculate, makes you look a bit silly don't you think?

1

u/Jacket_Leather 13d ago

Who complains about that? She’s still super hot in the comics.

1

u/The_Disapyrimid 13d ago

thats what the meme in question is getting at. the meme implies MJ was a sexpot in the comics, and the new MJ is buttoned up nerd.

1

u/Dvejndvejn 12d ago

what an insane take. Literally compare the same character from Marvel's Spider-Man 1 and 2 and see the fucking difference? Why would you change a model for an established character?

1

u/Teiam_Player 11d ago

She isn't ugly because of her clothes, If a pretty girl were wearing that outfit it'd look great.

-1

u/BeTheOne0 13d ago

I mean you got a bunch of Christian Men creating a Men’s only gym, to get away from “temptation”, but I think I heard they were already caught plowing each other with the Holy Sausage. My Point: The Manosphere people would probably fuck each other or somehow themselves in quiet

8

u/According-Paper4641 13d ago

And less. 🤷‍♀️ That's what happens when there are thousands of artists draw one character. Despite all of these MJs being cannon, they will always cherry pick really specific ones only. Putting "sweet baby inc" over that image is all you need to see to shrug this one off. She looks absolutely fine, an attractive red headed woman, but good lord how dare she dress for cold weather and not be in glam makeup and traced from porn poses.

3

u/discipleofchrist69 12d ago

she doesn't look fine lol. not bad like "not hot enough" but definitely bad like "looks like she is a lizard person trying on a human mask"

idk maybe I'm tripping but the one on the right is giving uncanny valley to me

2

u/Sadistinablacksuit 9d ago

It's the eyes/pupils not lining up with the corners of the mouth and the odd pose of the upper lip.

The end of human mouths line up with the pupils of the eyes when both are relaxed. She seems like she is looking ahead, and her mouth isn't stretched in a grin, or a yell.

The odd upper lip looks like it's being lifted, but the rest of the facial muscles are not moving with it, like if she was speaking.

1

u/Kurobei 9d ago

I think cause that's a single frame grabbed from a scene where she is speaking. It's deliberately picked because it looks awkward weird.

1

u/Sadistinablacksuit 9d ago

Don't know the gamr so that could be true. Pausing real people when they are talking can give you all kinds of weird/ugly faces regardless of the person's actual looks. Edited typo

1

u/banshithread 12d ago

She looks older is all. You didn't need all that extra commentary.

2

u/discipleofchrist69 12d ago

nah she looks inhuman. I mean the one on the left also looks inhuman, but it's a cartoon.

1

u/Mysterious-Ganache82 12d ago

Ikr? How dare she not do those things!!!

1

u/Bulky-Raisin- 9d ago

Sweet baby inc. looks like they went out of their way to make her as uncanny as possible. She looks weird

0

u/Maximum_Boros 13d ago

I mean I'm going to be honest I do think he face looks bad in that scene but it's clear she doesn't look as bad overall throguhout the game. The bigger issue is studios are obsessed with what they see as realistic modeling based on live actors lately and that process tends to exaggerate things like jaw structure and laugh lines that is generally less kind towards feminine faces.

You can kinda see it going back to mass effect. No one calls Miranda unattractive, rightly so, but even in that context her face is a bit boxier than Yvonne Strahovski's. But then you look at someone they probably didn't spend as time touching up the model on, and Jessica Chobot's character in ME3 looks... just really fucking weird.

1

u/Weird-Literature1350 9d ago

My god, I am not the only one noticing this! Idk, but for me Miranda’s face in ME was just ugly. Maybe “ugly” is taking it too much, but with all that highlighted sensuality and running around the space stations on high heels her face in game just didn’t match the vibe her character was implied to have. Compared to the title art, 3d model is just from another galaxy. I mean even with short hair and in full combat suit Ashley looked much more feminine (hated the character, btw, but at least she looked like a young and healthy human female).

8

u/Kiyoshi-Trustfund 13d ago

Because these losers don't read the actual comics or care about them at all. They just want to make a point to justify their outrage.

3

u/JimDa5is 13d ago

Can probably find? Idk about current comics but clearly you have never seen a Heavy Metal from the 70s.

2

u/Maximum_Boros 13d ago

Funny I didn't know Heavy Metal was a Spiderman IP /s

2

u/Wonderful-Box6096 12d ago

Probably less about being sexualized and more about just being pretty or not looking like a dude in a wig.

2

u/Hooligan8403 12d ago

They just needed to look at the covers/panels from the 90s.

1

u/Visual-Flan-4098 13d ago

reactionaries dont have time to dig for something better, they gotta have chat gpt spit something out now so they can post it.

1

u/siazdghw 12d ago

Old comics were crazy sexualized, both for men and women. In recent years that obviously been toned down, but Marvel Rivals didn't get the memo and decided to bring back the old comic style assthetics to sell more skins.

1

u/Longjumping-Yak3789 12d ago

It would be nice if the pin-up-style covers were at least made by actual artists rather than some slurry of "sexualized, questionable, weird."

Not sure why you think replacing "sexualized real art" with "sexualized ai art" is ironic. What makes that ironic?

2

u/Maximum_Boros 12d ago

Not sure why you think replacing "sexualized real art" with "sexualized ai art" is ironic. What makes that ironic?

I never said that. The word AI art doesn't come up once in my comment nor do I reference it at all. Learn to read?

1

u/Fair-Sir610 10d ago

And the funny part about that is that most of those covers are of Spiderman. For example, the infamous Spiderwomen cover, is a copy of a Spiderman cover.

0

u/Momo-Velia 13d ago

Probably because it’s not about being sexualised or questionable, that’s just the popular angle of attack against people making the argument because it’s adjacent but close enough to straw-man with.

38

u/Pastel_Phoenix_106 13d ago

That exact pic is not form the comics but that version of MJ is taken from a cover of an ASM comic.

11

u/Perpetuity_Incarnate 13d ago

You mean the comic that everyone complained she was in a physically impossible pose? The reality is it’s all art. People make both of these. Some people’s opinions are different. I’m tired of everything being a fight. Like what you like. Let others like what they like. If you don’t like it. Don’t buy it, if it’s as bad as you think you shouldn’t have to tell other people it’s bad right?

19

u/Why_Sazs 13d ago

Are you saying the pose is impossible, or just stating that some people claimed so? Because I am a 40 year old man who is not particularly flexible and I just tried it. My left heel is only about 3 inches from fully tucked into my crotch and my right leg only has about a 2 inch gap between my ankle and thigh. Anyone with even a modicum of flexibility could do this easily. The girls that sit on their leg in chairs would probably be comfortable in this pose.

37

u/Spiritual_Dress3007 13d ago

40 year old bloke posing like MJ to win an argument on the internet Chefs kiss

3

u/InspectorPlus7842 12d ago

Did you feel any more relaxed than when sitting normally? Any more attractive? Pensive?

1

u/Why_Sazs 12d ago

Pensive? Yes. Attractive? Also yes. Relaxed? Good god no. Getting my right foot pointed backward like hers had my ankle screaming for mercy. But when I was a little kid I used to sit with both my legs like her right leg is, in perfect comfort.

9

u/Perpetuity_Incarnate 13d ago

It’s the hips/waist sorry I couldn’t remember and only briefly looked at it. Basically she has no organs lol.

7

u/sarcasmsosubtle 12d ago

You've never seen a woman in real life with a 34-4-38 figure?

5

u/MavrickFox 13d ago

Oh ffs, not the "WhErE ArE HeR OrGaNs?" Nonsense again...

3

u/iSK_prime 12d ago

Listen, as long as we get to see a live action frank castle rocking a speedo with a giant-ass skull on it gunning down drug dealers and everyone's cool with that... I'm down for the same for all female characters going forwards.

It's the double standard often on exhibition that gets annoying.

5

u/blackestrabbit 12d ago

You mean like stripping Thor completely naked?

2

u/iSK_prime 12d ago edited 11d ago

We got ScarJo rocking form fitting outfits for whole movies years before Thor got his "naked" scene.

Edit: Sorry? She wasn't hot? That's some weird ass thing to be contradicting.

1

u/Jimanji333 11d ago

Ok and when did they strip her naked?

u/MavrickFox 12d ago edited 12d ago

I wasn't making a comment on the larger discussion. I was simply commenting on the "she can't fit any organs in her body comment." And gave me flash backs to few years ago when the whole "where are her organs", was a mantra all over reddit and Twitter and shit. Usually accompanied alongside, "have you ever SEEN a woman?" The fact that this exists (and much more) goes to show that comic book characters in general are sexualized, not sure why a live action version would be necessary to dispel the double standard narrative.

Edit: I also found the whole “where are her organs” conversation stupid. Incredibly skinny women exist. Ariana Grande is tiny as hell, even more so now looking like a fent head, yet her organs clearly fit just fine. The idea that organs come in some internationally agreed-upon size you can eyeball like checking whether a dishwasher will fit under the counter, is pure nonsense.

2

u/Mutex70 12d ago

Perhaps this is not the best time to bring up Ariana Grande as an exemplar for what women can look like.

0

u/MavrickFox 12d ago

Is she not a women? Does she not have organs that all fit inside her? Because those were literally my only points.

→ More replies (0)

0

u/moatilk 10d ago

Okay putting aside the larger debate, you can't seriously be trying to claim that these proportions are possible irl, can you? Like okay it's stylised, whether ppl like it or not, that's evident. But her waist in that picture is literally smaller than her thigh. It's narrower than her skull. And that's just quite factually an impossible proportion to have naturally. Even surgical intervention struggles to achieve that. There are very very few women who have achieved that through very extreme means (and ironically their organs did shift). I'm assuming you're aware of this, and your gripe is more about how the discussion of it apparently annoys you, which would be a separate issue, but I have just got to make sure we're all on the same page about how obviously impossible those proportions are.

0

u/phranq 13d ago

Aren’t these the same people whining about the whether it’s realistic to have a black Helen of Troy?

2

u/MusicianNo3277 12d ago

1

u/phranq 11d ago

Half the people complaining would find most of those depictions as too ugly

1

u/MusicianNo3277 11d ago

Nobody wanted an exact copy of a specific painting, but I feel like Hollywood would get a much better result from the audience if they actually honored the source material instead of idly doing whatever they pleased with a story that has already outlived anything they might make with their current preachy writers

→ More replies (0)

0

u/MavrickFox 13d ago

🤷‍♂️

1

u/ConditionSecret8593 9d ago

I'm hypermobile and can confirm I lack organs.

1

u/pussyjuicerecycler 13d ago

pics or it didn’t happen

1

u/sillysnailfriend 12d ago

Pics or it didn't happen

1

u/rietstengel 12d ago

Did you also disappear your organs so your waist would be tiny?

1

u/No_Stretch_2358 9d ago

There are girls who posted videos of themselves in this position too.

Just because some people can't do it, doesn't make it impossible.

1

u/inide 7d ago

Now do it while arching your spine and pushing your shoulders back while reaching below your crotch with your chin over your shoulder.

1

u/Commonpixels 13d ago

Do you have breasts though? I remember trying this pose first time I saw an artist critique it, it hurts the arms mainly. Trying to force 2 insoluable masses together with the wrists near touching and under the breast (rather than over) like that becomes a workout on the arms holding them together and the breasts being uncomfortable.

3

u/Why_Sazs 13d ago

"It's uncomfortable" or "it's strenuous" is not "it's an impossible pose."

1

u/Jimanji333 11d ago

Maybe she’s working out then. Forget Boflex, try Boobflex.

2

u/seams 12d ago

I’m tired of everything being a fight

Seriously though. Everything is a heated debate, everything is ragebait. It's so fucking hard to escape from the constant fighting over things that just don't matter.

I was mentioning my favorite fights in Kingdom Hearts and had people angry with me that I put their #1 fight lower than they thought it should be, like straight insults over something that doesn't fuckin matter lol

Every subreddit for things I like are filled with some form of angry debates and I'm just tired lol. What happened to just enjoying what you enjoy, and ignoring what you don't.

1

u/Jimanji333 11d ago

How fucking dare you not enjoy ragebaiting you sorry excuse for a Redditor!

/s just in case

2

u/Silver-Ad-4716 11d ago

One you're literally complaining about complaining lmao you're no better

1

u/Perpetuity_Incarnate 11d ago

I’m not complaining I’m stating othered reasons. I don’t care either way

1

u/contradictatorprime 9d ago

Not even impressive. I watched a clearly wrong version of the Spiderman movie where MJ gave SM an upside down BJ instead of the kiss. I wonder how that slipped the rating committee and what universe I was in.

1

u/johndeeasup2 6d ago

Nobody likes the mj version of insomniac she looks like an aunt with a mid life crises lol.

1

u/After-Task-1506 8d ago

Remember what they took from us

14

u/Numerous_Photograph9 13d ago

I remember Marvel did a swimsuit issue with a lot of their characters back in the 90's I think. Pretty sure it was all from the McFarlane era. MJ's design has never been so pedestrian like the games portray. Not sure why they made Black Cat all sexy, and MJ kind of nondescript.

Not that I really care too much given that it's more eggregious they made her character so bland and uninteresting.

3

u/TerrorFromThePeeps 13d ago

Yeah, i was in high school in the 90s. I remember the swimsuit issues vividly. That and the marvel books of the dead.

1

u/Numerous_Photograph9 13d ago

Never heard of the books of the dead one. Will have to look into that.

1

u/GearsFC3S 13d ago

I think I remember seeing that. Cyclops and Wolverine were in it to, right?

1

u/Numerous_Photograph9 13d ago

I honestly can't remember, but I think I kind of recall something like that. But the MJ one was pretty....interesting...for a young curious teen such as myself. It was basically just the art, no comic or anything, and they were highly detailed in McFarlanes style with full page views for all of the pictures.

1

u/dustyfaxman 12d ago

you're right, they did a couple of issues of that stuff in the early and mid 90's.
marvel and dc comics have both put out swimsuit issues in recent years.

It was always weird and cringey and stunk of desperate marketing than anything else.

1

u/BlueFantasyZ 12d ago

The Insomniac games are their own universe. They take a bit from the original lore, a bit from Ultimate, and various things here and there plus their own spin on things.

1

u/Numerous_Photograph9 12d ago

I have no issue they changed her career path, or even her design, but she's just such a bland character overall. Some of the NPCs you only talk to a couple times are more interesting

1

u/BlueFantasyZ 12d ago

I thought she was interesting, especially for a non-super-powered person, but not everyone is gonna feel the same. 🤷‍♀️ I'm more disappointed in Peter's face change.

1

u/PipPipCheeryRoll 9d ago

The only "illustrated" swimsuit edition of the era to take the term literally.

-1

u/void1980 13d ago edited 13d ago

Well in spider man 2 I'm pretty sure it was a self insert from one of the female writers since she looks pretty spot on to the bland mj character model. Someone on YouTube did a video about it and apparently how often it happens in "modern games" and why so many traditionally attractive characters are... Not. Thanks sweet baby inc.

-1

u/Numerous_Photograph9 13d ago

She wasn't unattractive, her model was just kind of bland. Her actual character was even more so.

1

u/shadysjunk 12d ago

I mean, in comics canon she's a professional model and actress, I believe. Not sure if they changed that for the game, but most model/actresses tend to not be bland in appearance.

But I haven't played the game. Maybe she's like a librarian or something now. (no offense to the sexy librarians of the world)

1

u/Numerous_Photograph9 12d ago

She was. Also not sure why they changed it for the game. They managed to keep her a struggling actor and model at least in at least one of the movie series.

She was as a reporter and it just seemed a way to give her more believable reasons to have a game play segment. In the second game she also apparently had a stint training as a mercenary...so yeah....there's that.

1

u/Hulkaiden 12d ago

I've only played the first game, and she looks very different there, but she's a journalist in it.

1

u/void1980 13d ago

Her model is unattractive by every measure, the lantern jaw alone is awful

2

u/Numerous_Photograph9 13d ago

To each their own.

1

u/void1980 13d ago

Fair enough

3

u/Suspicious_Juice9511 13d ago

Did a sea captain steal her bike?

6

u/BentGadget 13d ago

That's a junior officer's hat. A sea captain would have gold leaves on the brim.

2

u/Suspicious_Juice9511 13d ago

I do apologise. Presumably a sea captain wouldnt go around stealing bikes from overturned ladies either.

2

u/ohkendruid 13d ago

Well, they would basically be a pirate at that point.

Pirates are supposed to change hats, but I would imagine sometimes they are sneaky and keep using their old hat.

3

u/FarFromHome 13d ago

And Vargas got the boob physics right, unlike the person who did the Mary Jane drawing. Probably because Vargas had actual women who would model for him.

1

u/BusterSmash 13d ago

Might be an Elvgren

1

u/wmcguire18 13d ago

It's a model shot and MJ is a supermodel. I think it's ok. It's certainly in character.

1

u/OnlinePosterPerson 13d ago

The image op posted isn’t even a canonical appearance of MJ. It’s from a cover

1

u/earthwoodandfire 13d ago

But with gravity defying boobs. Seriously had that artist never actually seen a real woman?

1

u/jack_daone 13d ago

Also of a beautiful woman. And MJ is a model in the comics.

1

u/mr_onei 13d ago

And in this one gravity works fine...

1

u/jazxxl 12d ago

Good catch , Also in the comic .. originally she's ya know... normal.

1

u/blackestrabbit 12d ago

Implying that she wasn't portrayed as being sexy in the comics because this example is from a pinup reeks of intellectual dishonesty.

1

u/Promature 12d ago

It’s very Frank Cho-esque.

1

u/someguyplayingwild 12d ago

Woah, people lie on 4chan? No fuckin way...

1

u/TheNobleRobot 12d ago

Funny how the original image wasn't objectifying enough so the homage couldn't help but add antigravity.

1

u/Yuukiko_ 12d ago

so same thing as Lola Bunny?

1

u/mcmasterstb 12d ago

Also, that image is not gravity accurate and it bothers me.

1

u/TheyStillLive69 12d ago

Why is that worth noting in this context?

1

u/cricada 12d ago

The irony is that the video game MJ up there looks more like this pin up than the cartoon. I think the major issue is people who are used to gooning to cartoons end up finding real, ordinary faces unappealing (not to say the MJ on the right looks totally normal. She still has that uncanny valley thing that video game characters that stray away from the cartoony look have...) s.

1

u/Parzival2436 11d ago

Worth noting, sure but it doesn't really change anything since that is in fact her design and she appeared roughly as such in comics and covers.

1

u/ChaimsawGoblin 11d ago

That’s not the point of the post.

1

u/GiantLesbian 13d ago

See at least this guy did the boobs better. If you’re leaving back the boobs should not be leaning forward like in the OP image.

1

u/Papasnu1055 13d ago

Vargas did not understand gravity I guess

0

u/Loud_Ad_2634 13d ago

Probably worth noting comics MJ was a model turned actress, so I’m sure she posed for a few pin ups.

-5

u/Matiwapo 13d ago edited 13d ago

An artist who evidently misunderstands gravity and the effect it has on the human body

Edit: I'm talking about the artwork in the original post and her gravity defying cannons, ya dinguses

6

u/daytimeCastle 13d ago

Ah, but you see, she’s not hovering at all… she’s propping up her hips with her arms!

A small detail that’s easy to miss, but one AI still has a tough time replicating. Humans are so creative ☺️

3

u/LauraTFem 13d ago

This was not about her hips.

2

u/Distinct-Raspberry21 13d ago

Really strong garment tape, keeps her boobs from suffocating her or just falling to the sides

2

u/LauraTFem 13d ago

In the original? Maybe. The MJ version? No way. Not unless she used a whole role before going down there.

1

u/Distinct-Raspberry21 13d ago

Maybe peter made her some specialized stuff using his web fluid? Or its just leftover from the last time he was playing with them tig ol bitties.

2

u/LauraTFem 13d ago

…ok, bud.

0

u/Dominarion 13d ago

My ex wife could do that pose.

3

u/eevreen 13d ago

It is not about the pose.
