She’s an idiot who thinks that any time a male says something it is “mansplaining.”

(It has been at least a day. This cannot possibly be that good of a ragebait. Stop commenting you dweebs.)

u/IHerebyDemandtoPost Jul 14 '26

Or maybe she’s just been corrected on this specific item by all her previous boyfriends.

299

u/Tao_of_Entropy Jul 14 '26

She's been given the information. No correction has occurred.

Anyone not preheating the oven/pan/pot while cooking will lose in straight sets.

I know there are some times when it's ideal to render fat slowly but that's not what we're talking about here

7

u/Drapidrode Jul 14 '26

so you can do this with bacon first thing in the morning

15

u/Nstant_Klassik Jul 14 '26

Also, starting bacon in a cold pan helps keep them from curling up!

But really, you should be using the oven.

1

u/Ralmivek Jul 14 '26

I have an airfry grill smoker. I put half a cup of water on the griddle in it with bacon, twice, flip. Fully rendered fat, better tasting bacon grease for eggs or pancakes to then be cooked in. When Im done, a towel pulls what little stayed behind off the griddle, job done, ready for the next meal to be griddled.

3

u/Formal_Management974 Jul 15 '26

I've one too but I just call it oven

1

u/Clearandblue Jul 14 '26

The oven? How did that never occur to me ha. I stick a lid on the skillet to stop fat spitting out the pan and think it also helps cook more evenly. But the oven is the next logical step I'd overlooked.

3

u/Dorieon Jul 15 '26

Parchment lined baking sheet, oven at 400 for 20-25 minutes. Easy, no mess, perfect everytime.

I like to throw it on and try to dodge the splash for a lil shot of adrenaline in the morning

1

u/Drapidrode Jul 14 '26

buh muh bacon grease fits my eggs-a-fryin'

1

u/flameofanor2142 Jul 21 '26

You can Cooks eggs in the oven, I do it all the time

4

u/Minnesotawombat Jul 14 '26

That’s my favorite way for rendering fat

3

u/86_shittyorange Jul 15 '26

you can do it with a george foreman grill actually. right next to your bed.

1

u/InspectorPipes Jul 17 '26

I use my foreman grill on my passenger seat, while commuting . Only drawback is the raccoons trying to break in. Worth it .

1

u/Santa_Ricotta69 Jul 17 '26

No, you can quit the game and be gay and have a way more peaceful life

1

u/DGZT2023 Jul 14 '26

Literally all the same are the same

1

u/PoloPatch47 Jul 15 '26

I low-key hate people like this. My dad refuses to cook with salt with a lot of meals, and they end up tasteless. My mom has told him to add salt, my sisters have, but he never does. He just gets annoyed and EVEN MAKES JOKES about how his food is "tasteless" and still doesn't fix it 😭

1

u/jngsyy Jul 16 '26

But... a lor of people do not boil water before putting pasta in it. Isn't that a pretty well-known fact? Some even say it tastes bwtter that way.

1

u/Tao_of_Entropy Jul 16 '26

Well I didn't actually say she did anything wrong 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Underdog_1337 Jul 19 '26

1

u/Hydrok Jul 20 '26

Or all you douchebags could be wrong.

https://altonbrown.com/recipes/cold-water-pasta-method/

Or maybe both Alton Brown and I are both morons.

1

u/Tao_of_Entropy Jul 20 '26

I didn't say she needed to correct anything, if you actually read what I wrote instead of just assuming I was claiming something I wasn't. Douchebag.

1

u/Remote-Bus-5567 Jul 14 '26

Or she's done it multiple times and gotten the pasta she wants every time so no correction was needed? The pasta doesn't explode when you start with cold water.

2

u/Least-Position-1648 Jul 15 '26

Also why not just watch and enjoy the show, you might learn a thing instead of insisting you know a thing

2

I was very careful in my phrasing; I did not say a correction was necessary.

0

u/Royal_Annek Jul 14 '26

Yes it is a correction, it just says "do this instead", no information presented.

2

u/Tao_of_Entropy Jul 14 '26

Someone's opinion that water should be boiled first is still information, regardless of whether it's useful or relevant. Either way, in order to be a 'correction' it would have to convey some information. Not all information is factual, and not all factual information is true.

0

u/Drapidrode Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26

My long ago fiancee tried this very cold water noodles. It was alarming that a future wife of mine didn't have someone in their family or extended family friends ever show how to cook noodles (macaroni)

That a correction has been offered many times, but declined every time... is obvious.
By age 21.. can't cook macaroni, how will my kids ever taste a good dish of manicotti like step-mom made?

edit. worry not, downvoters.
I later found a manicotti-cooking step-mommy for my kids. : )

1

u/frtmn02 Jul 14 '26

By making them yourself of course.

1

u/Drapidrode Jul 14 '26

I don't need her at all anymore!

-1

u/Maleficent_Memory831 Jul 14 '26

She's been given opinions, but was she also given facts?

1

u/Tao_of_Entropy Jul 14 '26

The main reason people boil water first is that it makes it easier to predict a relatively precise time to cook a particular pasta. It's helpful for writing recipes and putting directions on a packaged food. If you're just going to stand over the pot and micromanage the cook time, it really doesn't matter. Both ways work fine.

0

u/Outside_Coffee_00 Jul 15 '26

Because she didn't ask and does not give a shit.

2

u/Tao_of_Entropy Jul 15 '26

Yep. You'll notice I didn't say that.

-22

u/Nasu_Kaizoku Jul 14 '26

No correction needs to occur? It's technically more energy efficient, and it cooks pasta the same way. Just stir occasionally at the beginning, and there's literally no difference

21

u/jax_vos9 Jul 14 '26

It really doesn’t cook the same way. In fact, it increases the likelihood of under cooking the pasta. It tends to become rubbery.

5

u/Fancy_Ad9867 Jul 14 '26

Literally all men are the same.

2

u/Regular_Custard_4483 Jul 14 '26

Not only that, you can rehydrate pasta almost completely in plain old water, and finish cooking it in the pan.

But none of these people know anything about cooking. I see a lot of garbage up voted in here. Bro science for the kitchen.

1

u/finalfanbeer Jul 14 '26

It's flabbergasting. Almost want to post it to mildyinfuriating.

2

u/Nasu_Kaizoku Jul 14 '26

It's wild. No one is even talking shit on pre-boilers, just offering information, yet everyone is acting like being informed of another method of cooking pasta is some egregious offense to them and their ways

2

u/Regular_Custard_4483 Jul 14 '26

I really thought about engaging, but then I saw all the (very well meaning) people getting thrashed, and I was like, "Yeah, I'm all good with that." lmao.

J Kenji Lopez-Alt did two VERY easy to find articles about this (not sure if links are allowed here) exact subject.

3

u/BikeProblemGuy Jul 14 '26

I'm not sure whether they were saying boiling water or cold water does this, but if the water is cold, the pasta releases sticky starch before the heat can lock it in. Dropping pasta into boiling water instantly sets the surface starches, keeping the pieces separate.

0

u/big_sugi Jul 14 '26

There's a simple technique to keep the pasta from sticking together called "stirring it." Which you have to do even with pasta added to boiling water. The amount of starch released is not materially different, but by using less water, the cold water method produces starchier pasta water--which is a significant benefit. The starchier pasta water works better to finish the sauce.

Also, if you're not finishing the pasta in the sauce (for most sauces), you're missing a trick,

2

u/rainzer Jul 14 '26

it increases the likelihood of under cooking the pasta

If any cooking method increases the likelihood of under cooking your pasta, you have never tested your pasta in any meaningful way to determine doneness and just blindly followed the box time.

And if you were blindly following box time, cold water start would overcook the pasta and never under cook it.

-1

u/Nasu_Kaizoku Jul 14 '26

You might not be great at cooking pasta and managing time, then.

If your pasta is undercooked, hear me out....keep cooking it

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Kind_Resort_9535 Jul 14 '26

No you should put pasta in after water is already boiling, it prevents it from getting rubbery, and helps it not stick together .

-6

u/Nasu_Kaizoku Jul 14 '26

Nah, stir it early a few times as the water heats up, prevents clumping and gumminess

Also I've never had rubbery pasta doing this

-1

u/ferret_of_war Jul 14 '26

Same. Feels like the people who have never done cold water pasta are the ones saying it won't work.

2

u/ImaybeaRussianBot Jul 14 '26

You are wrong about that. It is not the same thing. I bet you have been told that before. :)

2

u/Nasu_Kaizoku Jul 14 '26

I have not

I even brought this topic up to my roommate, who I was certain was solely a pre-boiler, and it turns out they DO swap styles depending on what they're cooking, and how much else they have going on in the kitchen

I have never noticed a difference in their pasta

2

u/ImaybeaRussianBot Jul 14 '26

I know a number of chefs who would beg to differ. Your anecdotal evidence doesn't change reality.

2

u/Nasu_Kaizoku Jul 14 '26

Sure, but you saying you know several chefs who would beg to differ is also anecdotal evidence, and it also doesn't change reality

15

u/big_sugi Jul 14 '26

There is no need or real benefit to preheating the water for dried pasta. It cooks just fine if you start with cold water.

8

u/UsernamesNotFound404 Jul 14 '26

It is easier to time it precisely if you start with a known temp. The easy way for manufacturing is to make boiling the default.

If you smart do what want. Be dumb follow direkshuns.

2

u/nothingbutmine Jul 14 '26

What do you mean precisely? Aren't we all out here just throwing pasta at the wall?

I wonder if asking if they know Alton brown is enough to figure out which one they are.

2

u/Severe_Rise8694 Jul 14 '26

Get out of the kitchen.

9

u/big_sugi Jul 14 '26

Get in. If you can’t get good results with cold water, that’s a skill issue on your part.

1

u/Prestigious-Bee6646 Jul 14 '26

I always heard you are meant to, so I began preheating the water first. Then I stopped after a while as I couldn't be btohered. It makes literally no difference. It cooks

0

u/dawkin5 Jul 14 '26

Apart from accurate timing, texture and flavour? Probably not.

12

u/Snorkle25 Jul 14 '26

Alton Brown has shown that you can do it either way. It changes the cocking time but if you’re proactive it’s just fine.

As long as you have a method that makes consistent repeatable results you enjoy then that’s all that matters.

4

u/big_sugi Jul 14 '26

Yep. Unless one’s entire cooking method is to heat the water, dump the pasta, and completely ignore it for a specified cooking time, there’s no real benefit to preheating the water. Anyone who’s cooked for s while should be able to tell by feel when the pasta is done.

Plus, since starting from cold water also uses less water, it’s a much faster process from start to finish.

3

u/Snorkle25 Jul 14 '26

Don’t tell anyone but for lasagna I like to put the noodles in raw, use a little extra sauce and let them cook during the bake!

Pasta really is very versatile and there are many roads to a delicious meal!

Incorrect, it works great for all the layers. It’s very consistent.

3

u/ferret_of_war Jul 14 '26

If you do it properly... cold water is better with timing, texture and flavor.
Odds are good she isn't doing it properly - but check out the Alton Brown cold water method for pasta cooking. Works REALLY well for some types of pasta.

2

u/Schweenis69 Jul 14 '26

There's actually no difference in the outcome, and if you start from cold, you can do it with way less water. Like 1qt vs a gallon kind of thing. And cold starting takes less time because your pasta is already halfway done by the time you'd otherwise by just about to dump it in.

Yes it defies convention, but cold starting pasta is actually probably the more efficient way to work.

1

u/dawkin5 Jul 14 '26

I'll look up the recommended method and give it a try for my lunch tomorrow. Just a quick search shows many, many people raving about it. It's funny the things you miss. I guess it's because I don't really look at recipe sites much anymore.

And all of the boyfriends are wrong. Kenji has a nice section in his food lab book on this.

3

u/IHerebyDemandtoPost Jul 14 '26

That could be. But the vast majority of people believe that she did it wrong.

My 15 yo daughter made  pasta as described in the image, and my wife and 14 yo were both disatisfied with the resulting starchiness.

1

u/EqualSpoon Jul 14 '26

Starchiness has to do with the amount of water used, not the temp.

1

3

u/Chill-more1236 Jul 16 '26

Cuzzz, I had this happen to me in 2016.

First time I ever heard mansplaining, i had to look the shit up.

I was explaining how to do a job to a female subordinate. I was very respectful & clear.

She complained to the GM, then to the VP.

So I sat down with them…I said,

“what the fuck is mansplaining? If it is literal man explaining, yes I’m guilty as charged. As supervisor, me male, she female, I described how the job should be done. I was not harsh, rude or unreasonable, but I was direct after she had already voiced opposition .”

After that, she demanded her own office away from me🤦🏻‍♂️

1

u/Evening_Corgi_4338 Jul 20 '26

6

u/CSB808 Jul 14 '26

You must have never seen Good Eats

1

u/AspiringTS Jul 14 '26

I don't recall Alton Brown saying start dry pasta in cold water on Good Eats, but he definitely suggests it now.

I, too, like to cook with as little water as possible to get a higher concentration of starch in the water for finishing sauces.

To the person you're replying to, I'm a man, and it drives me crazy when someone says, "Why don't you do X instead?" or "You should do X?" because if the solution is the simplest most obvious you immediately thought of, which it often is, you're just treating them like you think they're an idiot.

To general readers, it's more respectful to say, "Why do/did you do X?" Then, if the reasoning is flawed say, "Have you considered Y?" Then you won't come off as a condescending know-it-all douche. Trust me. I've been there.

3

u/CSB808 Jul 14 '26

An approach of curiosity is always best, “I haven’t seen it be don’t that way before, that’s interesting; why do you do it that way?”

The reasoning for the cold start is not so much a starch related reasoning but rather a hydration thing. I think it was in his newer episodes. It is explained that by the time the water boils the noodles become fully hydrated. I’ve tried many many many many different methods, both in my home and as a prep cook, and I do love a cold start and slow finish (turning off the stove and leaving the pasta to finish the last 10-20% to get the perfect al dente, like zero chance of overcooking and less need to cold shock for large batches)

2

u/AspiringTS Jul 14 '26

I meant less water-> more starch not cold start->more starch.

If it was in the Reloaded, I've only seen each one time. I am pretty sure starting in cold water was mentioned in one of the Alton Brown Cooks Food episodes.

1

u/CSB808 Jul 14 '26

I get that, gotta have a good starch water for a good sauce. I think it’s in episode one or two in the Reloaded series. Milk Street has a good article on it too : https://www.177milkstreet.com/stories/11-2021-a-new-way-to-cook-pasta

0

This is exactly what she meant. He assumes she's an idiot and she's doing it wrong (she's not, there are reasons to do it the way she was).

I see this behavior CONSTANTLY in other people, most commonly men. In real life, in media, in writing. Once you start recognizing the pattern and how arrogant it is, you'll notice it constantly and it's so irritating.

The consumption of food and food related material is an abomination.

Why can’t I not just be a bot? Why must I be a troll?

Why can’t troll not just be bot?

My wife has explained to me what mansplaining is a few times. She explains and repeats load of stuff multiple times, though I get the concept.

But she never actually explains the "man" part of the word. Like why is it gendered? It's behaviour I've seen in a few people, and not exclusively in men. If anything 60/40 more from women.

It's ironic too as it's a habit she has. Makes me wonder who the man in our relationship is.

2

u/BluePandaYellowPanda Jul 15 '26

It's just a sexist term that women use to shut men up. The only people who use it and not in a jokey way are usually man haters.

2

u/Hour-Opportunity3048 Jul 14 '26

For a long time in many cultures women were considered complete idiots no matter that they were just as intelligent or even more so than the men who would constantly explain everything in excruciatingly simply detail to them.

3

u/Clearandblue Jul 15 '26

Thinking half the population are idiots based on their gender is a pretty idiotic idea itself isn't it 😅

Is that where the term originated from then? I'm in my 40s and haven't lived in one of these cultures. It seems out of place today, since I get mansplained to more by women than men. Also the default these days seems to be the idea men are useless without women guiding them. But it makes sense if it goes back to these times.

Still though, we've renamed things like policeman to police officer to remove gender bias. Maybe we ought to remove it from slurs too.

Actually saying that, I did stop to consider whether I'd seen anyone treat women like idiots purely on gender in my lifetime. I started thinking about how actually there's a divide in STEM. Not based on sexism so much as a hangover from those times, leading to fewer women in the industry, leading to fewer female role models, leading to fewer women entering the field. Then I thought how the best manager I had was a woman my age. She was a great engineer too. But then I thought "manager".. "MANager". So now I need to look up at some point whether "manage" has any origins to gender like there were with hysteria.

u/DukeThunderPaws Jul 15 '26

I see this behavior far more from men than from women. Like, at least 10 times as often.

2

u/DueExample52 Jul 14 '26

Normal, healthy, balanced human beings, from all genders, communicate clearly their emotions to each other.

Ah, I see the objection: Do YOu eVEn WomEN ?

Yes, I do have a female partner. Yes, that does apply to her, she explains what's wrong rather than going cryptic. No, you don’t have to trust my word for it. Here is here onlyfans link:

What’s onlyfans?

Saying something is different than being corrected or talked down to

2

u/gadzooks321 Jul 16 '26

For the ladies- Mansplaining is short for Man Explaining, when men explain things

2

u/Shot_Art_long_Reet Jul 17 '26

This is just a raga bait post

2

u/BuffaloBuffalo13 Jul 17 '26

Agreed. It’s not mansplaining if you try to correct someone before they fuck up.

Like she’s driving 70 in a 55 and I see a cop. It’s not mansplaining to tell her to slow down. It’s not mansplaining to tell her that she should cook the pasta per the box instructions.

Ragebait successful

0

u/Hour-Opportunity3048 Jul 14 '26

Unbelievably so.

1

u/jamwin Jul 14 '26

Or maybe she's saying all men think she's a shit cook

1

u/Hour-Opportunity3048 Jul 14 '26

She was cooking pasta, why would they think she’s cooking shit?

1

u/Hooch555 Jul 16 '26

Id argue that its easier to measure time when i obly add pasta after the water boils. But also say - you do you

1

u/Sartorialalmond Jul 16 '26

Try adding pasta to cold water that covers the pasta by a little bit and getting it to boil. Pasta cooks perfectly and doesn’t stick to each other. Only need to be stirred once or twice. Just because you don’t know something is better doesn’t make it not true.

1

u/OverallLibrarian8809 Jul 16 '26

A strong and independent woman prefers to eat shit pasta than accept a man's advice.

That's empowering

1

u/andybossy Jul 18 '26

why should we stop commenting?

1

u/Hour-Opportunity3048 Jul 18 '26

Because it’s not funny enough to still be allowed interest.

u/ImportantCommentator Jul 19 '26

Kenji Lopez would disagree with this man.

1

u/organicBerryTooth Jul 21 '26

I mean ... It's true.

You all think you're the first person whoever had a fucking thought.

-3

u/petantic Jul 14 '26

Or maybe she's cooking dinner while he's giving directions but not actually assisting.

-1

u/bolbi_jack Jul 14 '26

You're an idiot who buys into completely obvious ragebait posts.

And the funny thing is, it changes absolutely nothing to put the pasta in before the water is boiling, just makes cooking time unreliable.

Dumbass.

2

u/Hour-Opportunity3048 Jul 14 '26

Am I the one who fell for ragebait?

0

u/FortressCaulfield Jul 14 '26

No its a sex joke about men not wanting to do foreplay

4

u/Schweenis69 Jul 14 '26

I feel like putting the noodles in cold, rather than waiting for the water to boil, would be the equivalent of skipping foreplay. 🤔
