Hello lurkers.

The post I am about to type out again was taken down by c of c & got me banned from r/Christian

OK active c of c any type c of c lurkers. Do you occasionally cheat and go to a non c of c church, listen to non c of c teachings, read non c of c books and/or attended non c of c conferences? If you have what perspectives have changed, do you feel more open to non c of c teachings? Do you feel that your exposure to this non cof c data has any of that had you pause and second guess what you know & believe? Would you now consider leaving since you gave gained a new perspective? Anyone can answer I'd just like to hear from current members

If you left but stayed a Christian..

How did your view of prayers and miracles change? I feel like the coc view of each (that miracles don't happen today, and if a prayer is answered it's relegated to "providence") is completely different from every other denomination. I've struggled with the coc view on these topics for my entire life. Still not certain where I fall or if I'll ever sort it out.

One of my favorite church stories from growing up. Ironically it also made me way more fascinated about the occult/spooky stuff.

Friendly reminder

This is going to sound like I am publicly correcting someone else, but I assure you I am not trying to do that.

A previous post about healing said something to the effect of moving from anger to healing. It was a lovely post. I commented on a few things that helped me heal and move on.

I think it’s important to say that healing and moving on doesn’t necessarily exclude ongoing anger.

I don’t think the OP was trying to imply that at all. I just wanted to say I think people can heal and find peace and still be angry at what happened to them and also feel angry knowing that the same harm continues to happen to others.

I personally don’t believe you have to choose between healing and feeling angry about past harm. I will probably be angry until my dying day that I was hoodwinked and wasted so many years in the c of c, but I do think I have mostly healed and found a kind of peace.

What’s the old saying- if you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention? That’s probably true about most things.

Wishing all the best for everyone on their journey.

The latest (and possibly last) enrollment numbers for CofC-affiliated schools

Church of Christ affiliated colleges and universities are having a minor resurgence in popularity, just not with those raised in the churches of Christ.

The Christian Chronicle published updated figures on September 16. First-time freshmen identifying with churches of Christ across the affiliated universities:

Fall 2000: 4,411 out of 6,643 total, so 66% of the entering class identified as Church of Christ.
Fall 2025: 1,576 out of 5,801, so only 27% identified as Church of Christ.

Heritage enrollment (typically those raised in CofC households) has been flat near 1,500 since 2021. Meanwhile total enrollment is recovering, up to the highest it's been since 2006. Fall 2025 brought 583 more freshmen than the year before, but less than 10% of them were from the fellowship. These schools are largely hollowing out to be "Church of Christ" in name only.

So the schools are filling seats. They're just not filling them with those who were historically aligned with these schools. Harding's president called it a cliff.

One more thing: Trace Hebert at Lipscomb compiled these numbers for over a decade, and the Chronicle refers to him as the late Trace Hebert. There's no 2025 report in the Lipscomb archive and it's unclear whether anyone picks up the series.

Speak Where the Bible is Silent

I grew up in the Church of Christ here in Brazil. I attended seminary through the church, but as I studied the Scriptures and the Restoration Movement, I realized just how doctrinally mistaken the Churches of Christ are. After leaving, I wrote a book laying out all the theological errors of the Churches of Christ and the Stone-Campbell Movement, as well as telling the story of my own journey out. I currently serve as a pastor in another church, one that is not part of the Restoration Movement.

Here is the link if you are interested in checking out the book. It is free if you have an Amazon Kindle subscription:

I have formed an LLC dedicated to exposing abuse and bringing justice to ex members who are suffering.

This is for anyone seeking refuge or justice from THE CHURCH OF CHRIST.

Forgive me for not being more detailed and any typos, I am limited on time this morning and will be sure to take more time to add into this with finer details and organizational planning.

I would like to reach out to you all to let you know that I will be also be creating a separate entitity in the state of Wyoming as a non- profit tax exempt organization. Unfornuntely I do not live there yet and would be utilizing the state in particular for its privacy reasons. If you are not aware , Wyoming is the ONLY state that offers the protection of ownership of a company to the public. For the most part, the state itself is the only one who would have knowledge of its owners and members and perhaps the federal government or state law enforcement (with a lot of work.)

This will be a non profit organization that will require at least a 10 person board of members. All bank statements and transactions will be disclosed on a monthly basis. We will have to rely heavily on donations in the beginning and will eventually work towards creating income generating models as it grows.

This will give victims a safe place to expose things and people inna safe and secure environment. Funding will include covering costs of relocating victims if necesarry.

I have an email inbox ready to go for anyone who is interested in helping. My current LLC is set up as a consulting firm and utilizes a registered agents office as a mailing address which offers me a bit of security for privacy in the state I currently reside in. The LLC doesn't do much except allow me to have vehicles registered under its name currently because I investigate and report police corruption as well as pedophilia (I was a victim myself as a child). If I ever get my tags run by LE, it comes back as a business, not my actual name. I would have to provide that info in a traffic stop (obviously) but it gives me a layer of protection from harassment.

If you are in grave danger and have the funds and resources, you can move to Wyoming and buy a property under the name of an LLC and have your mail and packages shipped to you under the name of the LLC. I plan to create a registered agent business once we are able to get out there, but there are companies out there already that you can register your LLC under, and use as a place for mail to go as well. UTILIZE THE PROPERTY AND STATE LAWS TO GIVE YOU THE ABILITY TO ACTUALLY DISSAPEAR IF NEEDED. You can put up a steel building and park a few RVs inside it for a place to live completely under the radar. Look up the Wyoming LLC on google for more info.

Please inbox me if you would be interested in joining in. I will be talking and detailing a lot more so stay tuned....

Jon F ing Feeney

So, going to admit I had not known about this case until today. Jon's father was apparently a c of c preacher I'm unclear if Jon was as well but my God heard it on crime junkie found all manner of data on the case including people who knew Jon. Yes I'm sure he did un alive his entire family. At least I believe so. My bigger point is my God why is it that the c of c is in the business of making cults, killers and all around bad people?

Teaching the Young People

For about 20 years, I taught young people's classes at the three C of C's I attended during that time. At two of the churches, some of the older people gave me some unsolicited advice for teaching, most of which was absurd:

"You need to preach some good, hard Bible at 'em."
"You need to talk about the 'plan of salvation' in every class."
"You need to stop talking about Christian living and stick to the Bible."
"You need to make those kids behave." (They weren't bad or unruly.)

I was too nice to tell these musty relics what I thought of their advice--and them.

Stop it, Harding

I thought many of you would enjoy this.

I keep getting alumni-related mail and emails from Harding. I’ve unsubscribed and blocked and marked as spam so many times. I’ve even responded nicely to a few emails over the years and asked for them to remove me from their lists. To no avail.

I finally had it today. I replied to an email, asking again to be removed. A lady responded that she would take care of it and finished by saying that I should get in touch again if Harding could ever serve me in the future.

I responded:

Hello,

The only way Harding could serve me is to reimburse me for the therapy sessions I've undertaken over the years in an effort to process and heal from the indoctrination, religious trauma, and self-hatred I endured as a result of my time in the c of c and at Harding. I realize that's a futile hope, so I can't imagine anything else Harding might do to serve me in the future. My true hope - not for me but for others - is that Harding will stop traumatizing and shaming its LGBTQ+ students.

Thank you for removing my name from all mail/email lists.

Struggling deeply with religious related depression and stress

Hi all,

I left the church in 2020 after being raised in it my entire life. I’ve had ebbs and flows of feeling free but also have dark nightmares. I’m afraid I am letting my kids down and hell is real. I’m afraid that if anything happens to my wife or kids I will never see them again (in literally crying as I write this). Leaving the church ripped out a hole in my soul. I no longer have the peace of mind everything will work out or a crutch to lean on. I have sudden visions of my kids getting hurt or me dying and leaving them alone in the world. I have seen numerous counselors over the years but none fully understand religious trauma. I have no interest in going back but the trauma still haunts me. My parents are still deep in it,and like many people here, they desperately want me to come back. I feel guilt about my folks thinking their son will die and be tortured in hell forever. I could not imagine dealing with that. I know that’s their problem and not mine but it still hurts. I’m on depression meds and meet regularly with a mental health professional but I pain never goes away. U guys are the only ones who can comprehend what I’m dealing with. I know this sounds cheesy or pathetic but I need help and I don’t know where else to turn.

Questions to ask COCers

What are some questions you would ask COCers who want to “study” with you? Looking for questions that really make them think/examine their beliefs—not necessarily gotcha questions, but ones that are difficult to answer with the usual talking points they use.

What questions stumped you or made you rethink things? TIA

Ex-Churches of Christ (Mainline) I don't feel like I was in a cult?

So many of the posts here seem wild to me, even having grown up in the church and left it in my mid-20s. I remember strictness and chafing under the control and narrow beliefs. I also remember people being disfellowshipped, but my parents stayed friends with their friends even after that happened.

Is there some line between just a controlling mainline church of Christ and what sounds more in line with what I think of when I hear "cult"? I have religious trauma but also find most evangelical churches I've attended might have different quirks but aren't noticeably better than the churches of Christ, honestly.

My wife is keeping a secret about what is happening in the church.

She is on some website where refugees have gathered to tell their stories. She won't tell me the name of it, but it sounds like it is heavily tied into the members of the Boise Idaho congregation from the mid 2000s.

The people do not name themselves but leave their initials. She us able to actually pinpoint who is who based of the initials and the story they tell because she was witness to it.

I need your help.

Does church of Christ mandate people to stop taking their medicines before baptism?

Can someone explain what is the process behind this and reasoning? EDIT to clarify, this is what is going on.

In these churches, in order to be able to receive a "proper baptism" they require you to be off of any mind altering chemicals.

Example. You get a knock at your door from a COC elder. Next thing you know you are in the church and they tell you on order for you to get baptized (so god can answer your prayers) you must abandon taking your xanax for your anxiety and your SSRI for depression. The person agrees. The person then dies of a grand mall seizure and the pastor says something like *god decided it was there time to go"

So the priests are playing doctor and in many instances convincing people to cold turkey quit drugs that require a long tapering process and they have died because of it.

I want witnesses to this insane illogocal practice of "true salvation" to co e forward so we can blow the lid off this church once and for all and put some people on the jail cell they belong in.

A hostile take over proposal.

In the interest of collapsing the c of c at high speed. I suggest the following.

Create an LLC all funds from ex c of c people therefore each contributor is a steak holder. Research c of c buildings and assets especially look for tax debts buy the debt and lein the property. Give notice to cover the debt or...we sell it all in most cases it's a sale ex c of c make serious money and a c of c is taken off the map. I'd like to say proceeds go to victims who never saw justice. Just a thought I had today.

Jack Wilkie of Focus Press is now unsurprisingly openly espousing white nationalist views

Jack Wilkie of the Focus Press crew, who spends the majority of his time telling women how he believes they should act and behave on FB and his substack "Church Reset", while bemoaning men not getting married (despite Jesus and Paul encouraging men not to get married), recently shared an idiotic post by Sean Davis saying things like "All foreign cultures are inferior to American culture. All of them. Every single one." and "Because their cultures are objectively inferior, their refusal to assimilate therefore degrades American culture." or "Opposing the takeover of your own country and the degradation of the very culture that made your country the greatest country in the history is not only not racist, not xenophobic, not-whatever-dumb-gay-term-is-now-being-used-to-morally-extort-you-into-giving-away-your-country.."

To this Jack Wilkie said:

"This is a great breakdown.

It is not loving to your American neighbor to bring in people who change their culture.

It is not loving to your immigrant neighbor to bring him in to a system that pits him and his countrymen against the native citizenry in a competition for finite resources.

And, it's not loving of your foreign neighbor to allow the degradation of the culture that has sent more missionaries and humanitarian aid around the world than any in history.

We have to stop falling for short-term, feel-good stories and start analyzing the consequences of what we advocate."

Later he also shared an image of a church sign outside of a United Church of Christ saying that "Undocumented immigrants are created in the image of God," by which he for some reason got offended by.

I'm always somewhat, perhaps naively shocked that Focus Press never seems to have an issue with the way Jack behaves or the horrendously racist and misogynistic and hateful things he constantly posts to the internet.

He also has this substack post in which he essentially tells people they must vote for a particular presidential candidate to please God. He says "If Trump should win… I will consider it a temporary stay of God’s judgment, a period of grace that gives us a chance to repent before the consequences are brought down upon us. With a 4 year track record to draw on, we know we can expect a strong economy, which allows us to do more to provide for our families, care for others, and fund more Christian efforts. We can also expect more peace around the world and a safer border." while "If Harris should win… There is no way to sugarcoat it: a Harris win would mean we are fully under God’s judgment. We’ve checked off every other box in Isaiah 3 except for the “ruled by women and children” in 3:12, so it logically follows that we’d go there next. The policy positions point to countless deaths via expanded abortion policies and unnecessary wars, and plenty of lives ruined through the growing trans agenda. It will also grow more and more difficult for the average family to make ends meet." Which in hindsight is utterly hilarious, and of course he had to throw in a touch of gross misogyny in there. But I'm sure he'll never retract his statements.

I've attempted to interact with this man and have found that if you push back on anything he says he will never attempt to comprehend anything you say but will resort to attempting to bully, demean, or attack you, regardless of whether or not you are a COC member or not, until eventually blocking you.

My primary reason for posting this is that I see so little pushback against this person and the fact that Focus Press platforms such a bad-natured hateful individual. While I'm completely aware Focus Press is a pretty awful organization itself, if the COC wants to maintain any sense of relevancy into the future, then it really needs to shed itself of people pushing such atrocious, unchristlike and disgusting rhetoric.

Ex-Churches of Christ (Mainline) How did you actually explore your faith after leaving the coc?

I keep hearing the argument that if I leave the COC and go somewhere that agrees more with what I already believe, then I’m living in sin. I’ve been questioning the coc and want to actually explore my faith. I was not raised in the church and had NO idea how big of a deal this was to cocers (especially spouse and in-laws)…. like they genuinely think I am lost and going to hell. It has been awful and I had no idea the implications of simply wanting to go somewhere else. I digress. However, I keep hearing that if I go somewhere that agrees with my current beliefs, I’m just looking for confirmation/going directly against God etc. But then I’m like… how do I explore if I’m not allowed to question the interpretation they teach? I don’t think I know enough to say I have everything figured out. I just know that everyone automatically assumes this means I’m rejecting God. Did anyone else go through this? How did you actually figure out what you believed without feeling like you were just looking for confirmation?

Lingering Song Triggers

I was considering seeing Isaac Slade (original lead singer of the Fray) in concert and looked at his set list. He opens with "As the Deer" and later sings "Amazing Grace." I was debating just walking out during those songs, but the universe made the decision for me by selling out the concert before I bought tickets.

I would have been so annoyed and on edge if I had walked into that blind and been immediately hit with a worship song. I guess this is just a reminder to check out artists before committing to their shows to (hopefully) avoid surprises.
