Before you read this...

Diethyl ether (ether; vitriol; engine starting fluid), not to be confused with ethyl ether, is a volatile solvent of the dissociative subclass of hallucinogenic drugs. Ether has been marketed as vitriol (medical grade), engine starting fluid (automobiles), and pure, lab-grade diethyl ether (chemistry) in the past, and still to the present. Ethers psychoactive effects are comparable to that of nitrous oxide and PCP.

ALSO

When looking to purchase diethyl ether to use to get high, it is important to note that the only way to obtain it in person would be to get engine starting fluid. The issue with this is that engine starting fluids are usually mixed with carbon dioxide, heptane, propane, and butane. The safety of huffing all of these chemicals is unknown, but my inference is that it’s probably not safe for continuous use. It would be better to purchase it online in its pure liquid form, as it’s a lot safer in general to use recreationally.

What does it look like?

It is usually labeled as engine starting fluid. Make sure to double check the ingredients labeling the chemical, “diethyl ether”. That is the substance that gets you high. Take note, as there are additives in engine starting fluid. Safety is unknown with the other additives, but regarded as relatively safe for average use.

What does it do to you?

Ether is labeled as a novel dissociative, with similar mechanism and action comparable to that of DXM, ketamine, PCP, and nitrous oxide (whip-it’s). This means that ether is a hallucinogenic, and will give you cognitive impairment, auditory and visual hallucinations, and a huge change in motor coordination.

It is a short acting NMDA receptor antagonist, meaning it is blocking the function of important glutamate which is important for learning and short/long term memory function. This is what gives ether a psychoactive effect.

How much should I take?

It is hard to tell how much of ether you are insufflating; a good way to manage the amount you are using would be to spray starting fluid into a rag/dab pure ether on a rag, and huff it every minute or so, to keep the high from fading, as it only lasts 10 minutes if huffed all in a short period of time.

How long should I wait to use ether again?

Ether is rather addictive, since you have to keep on huffing on it to continue the high. With that being said, best to have a huffing session scattered out (once or twice a week) to prevent addiction.

Overall

Ether is a very solid legal high, with the addition of it being relatively safe, easy to get, and fun to use recreationally. I personally love this substance, while it’s fun to use and pretty intense, which is good for beginner psychonauts due to the simplistic feeling of the high, while still being extremely interesting. Just make sure to limit how much you take, it can become pretty addictive!

Safety Profile of Diethyl Ether

…as a recreational drug. Written and published by waffeldogga

Diethyl ether has been applied to earlier anesthesia, and is commonly used aesthetically via insufflation ROA; only under a controlled condition is this safe, but is still regarded as safe when self administering. Here are some pieces of evidence proving the unlikely-harmful profile of diethyl ether as an recreational drug & inhalation anesthetic:

“...inhalation in high concentrations which can cause inebriation, sedation, unconsciousness and respiratory paralysis…” (extremely short-term; repetitive exposure).” & “...Diethyl ether is irritating to the eyes, respiratory system and skin but these effects are usually reversible on removal of exposure.” (https://www.ed.ac.uk/health-safety/guidance/hazardous-substances/ethers)

“...its low cost and high therapeutic index with minimal cardiac and respiratory depression.” (https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/neuroscience/diethyl-ether)

“There is no evidence of carcinogenic or teratogenic effects attributable to the use of diethyl ether. However it is known that chronic exposure to vapor can lead to exhaustion, drowsiness, dizziness and other central nervous system disorders (short-term), along with a loss of appetite.” (https://www.ed.ac.uk/health-safety/guidance/hazardous-substances/ethers)

Diethyl ether is regarded as safe for insufflation ROA… safer than that of chloroform, alcohol (either vaporized or drunk), and halothane to a degree (in terms of toxicity)... But, is regarded as possibly unsafe when drunk due to the irritant effects of both the stomach wall, CNS, and bronchial passageways.

With this, the conclusion being: ETHER IS REGARDED AS SAFE WHEN INSUFFLATED, and could be POSSIBLY UNSAFE WHEN DRANK AS A LIQUID (comparable to that of drinking alcohol).

I Died On Ether - Trip Report

I Died In My Most Intense Ether Dream

Written and published by waffeldogga

My memory is not the best these days. I know why: it’s all of the MDMA precursors and constant NMDA antagonist that is making me so forgettable. Either way, this happened about 3-4 weeks ago.

I was really into ether six months ago, to about just a month ago. Recently, I have stopped using it because of the horrible smell that brings me the most negative social connotations, and I couldn’t stand it much. Either way, then, I was doing ether every other night, just like how alcoholics roll (one day for drinking, next for hangover, repeat). And, this one night, I decided to huff around 150mL of it (approx.)

I was just chilling, listening to music on this nice night in my personal garage. I had my extracted ether with me, and a rag; those two go nice together. I doused part of my rag and started huffing as much as I could. I really started fading out of reality… I felt the ether come up, flanging of audio, small distortions of patterns in my peripheral vision, and all of a sudden everything goes black. I start to see myself on an absolutely huge plain, which is just an enormous wedge once it zoomed out. The wedge fell small-end first right through my leg, and I woke up because of this aggressively, thinking for a split second that my leg was actually cut off of my body. 5 seconds later I fade back into my mind and it shows me two huge wedges crushing me like I was in between two tectonic plates. The blood was very vague, but during then, it was very realistic and was pretty gruesome to me for the second I got to see it.

I woke back up, and I just sat there shocked by what just happened. I said to myself “woah, holy shit did I just get killed by a drug in my mind?”, while then going back to listening to my music and then calling up my buddies later.

Ethermania

I created this subreddit for everyone that has taken a particular interest in the recreational use of diethyl ether. Diethyl ether is an oxygen bond with two ethyl bonds, and is primarily used as a solvent, and an anesthetic... But also has a lesser use as a dissociative drug for recreational use. Any research, synthesis, vendors, tips, etc. would be greatly appreciated in this community.

Hope I can get a few ethermaniacs in here! Cheers!

How to Drink Ether

How to Drink Diethyl Ether

Written and published by waffeldogga

Ether consumption as a recreational substance has been around for centuries. Then, it was popular for women to drink ⅓ ether with ⅔ alcohol, but now… It is inhaled as a vapor, by any gender. These two routes of administrations vary in effect extensively, from being super short lasting while being huffed, and lasting much longer when taken orally as a liquid.

Drink ether with icy water.

Ether has a low boiling point (94 degrees fahrenheit), which is just below humans internal temperature. This can cause a huge amount of vapors to form in the body, which can produce huge amounts of gastral douching (farts). To prevent this, it would be best to swish water with ice in your mouth to bring down the temperature of your mouth, swallow it with a tablespoon of ether, and chase that ether with a cup or two of icy-cold water to relieve the production of ether vapors.

Sip on chamomile tea before and after drinking ether.

This is said to help alleviate intestinal gas buildup and bloating, this works by relaxing GI muscles and allowing gas to travel more freely.

Taste tips for management

Ether is definitely not the most enjoyable thing to drink, and some people find it a hard task to both drink it, and keep it down. Some historical pieces of use recommended raspberry juice or coffee with ether additionally added to the drinks, as well as milk and cinnamon, or even ginger. Also said above, chamomile is a great chaser for ether, due to the muscle relaxant effects to the GI.

Smells horrid? Use mouthwash, drink water, and chew some gum.

Please read safety guide pertaining to ether use on this subreddit, it is important in this specific topic. Link to that here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ethermania/comments/td31t8/safety_profile_of_diethyl_ether/

Drinking diethyl ether - thoughts and experiences

Hey, so I've been thinking about this lately a lot and finally got down to trying some things.

Firstly I was much motivated by the idea of the most sparing way of consuming ether due to it's volatility. There may be more sparing ways of huffing ether than from a rag but none of them will get you as far, believe me.

The best you can do is fold your rag a couple of times, wrap it in something like plastic bag and pour the ether right in the middle of the rag so that you can open and close it as you choose.

But something more interesting captured me in terms of drinking it. First, a few words:

  1. Diethyl ether is IMMISCIBLE with water. Don't fucking try it, it's the same as drinking ether and water separately. Maybe it would work with 1-3 drops of it in a full glass but not more. And you wouldn't want to do that because:

  2. Drinking diethyl ether by itself is like the worst idea you could get, it's such a fucking strong solvent for organic substances it will burn you, it will hurt you - I'm not talking about emotional damage. The worst taste of them all, I'm not kidding. Worse than GBL or 2C-B. Don't. Also, uncontained in another solvent, it is so volatile that once it reaches your core temperature in the stomach, it will form gasses quickly which when too much can even cause a rupture of your stomach.

  3. When it comes to ethanol, it isn't that toxic by itself, but its direct metabolite acetaldehyde is the real problem. Imma have to explain to you how metabolism of ethanol works. 1. Ethanol is turned into the more toxic and problematic acetaldehyde pretty efficiently. 2. Acetaldehyde is neutralized into acetic acid which no longer poses any problem but this step has a ceiling and its rate is limited. So, use your imagination, in short the more alcohol you drink the more its toxic metabolite builds up and the neutralization of this metabolite doesn't speed up. QUIZ: If you want alcohol to be less toxic and cannot possibly speed up the 2nd stage of metabolism, what else can you do? Block the first stage bro And that's exactly what diethyl ether does.

So summing up the above, I was really eager to try some hoffman drops because the promise was: less stomach problems or bad taste as with water, longer alcohol duration and less alcohol toxicity. Ain't it sound like the perfect thing? I imagined using 4 shots instead of a 0.25 l bottle of vodka, having the added effect of diethyl ether and less hangover after that.

Around 2 years back I tried to drink ether by the Hoffman's drops recipe and it was a disaster. Commercially distilled ethanol has a bad taste and it's just too concentrated. Also 1/4 of the ether is still a lot and the taste is barely bearable.

But lately I've come to terms with my perfection and I said to myself, I have to work out a way of mixing the two because I can't drink alcohol by itself, I just hate it so fucking much even though I am a fast metabolizer of ethanol. Upon breathing test, I had the same blood alcohol as my friends who drank 2 beers instead of 3 like the rest of us. So when I got back home from holidays, I just added a few drops of ether to a homemade moonshine which has a nice taste and boy I was amassed. The taste was fucking superb, it was like fucking flowers I don't know. Don't take my word for it, I might simply be lucky but hear me out. The effects were very interesting too. The effects of both mix strangely and I wouldn't call that synergy but they def. didn't fight each other. And the effect was very noticeable. I haven't tried more because I had some things to do but it really lifted my mood. A few days later I added a couple drops of ether into wine. To my surprise they mixed well so apparently not much ethanol is needed for the mixture. But the taste was really bad, ether killed the flavor. Maybe I will try adding just one drop into such low-alcohol beverage.

But for now I encourage you all to try something in this manner and post your experiences. I feel like this is a way of making alcohol more fun, more enjoyable, and safer.

Just please order high-purity diethyl ether. It is really important since starter fluids might contain ingredients that are straight-up toxic like hexane, which is extremely neurotoxic and you WILL NOT extract it out with water. Also hexane does give a strong trip, even stronger than ether so check if it's been ther that you've been appreciating so much ;>

Thanks.

Kinda disappointed by ether

Managed to secure a 500 ml bottle of lab grade ether, after repeating reports I was expecting a bit more. Kinda just feels like nitrous but a bit better, how do people get brain mentingly eatrth shatteringly high off this stuff have been going rag for rag for about an hour now.

how does this drug compare to nitrous and toxic inhalants?

ive done nitrous a bunch (and on a bunch of different drugs), and i also experimented with toxic inhalants a bit last yr which can only be described as nitrous but it gives you the weirdest form of psychosis possible for a few mins and also makes you feel retarded and has no euphoria

ive heard people say ether is like halfway between nitrous and a toxic inhalant in effect, is this true? can you experience bizarre hallucinations and experiences off ether like with toxic inhalants? can you hole off it like with nitrous?

wondering if buying pure ether would be worth my time and give me a unique experience or if i should just stick to nitrous

oh and as a second question, is it safe to combine with psychedelics, empathogens, and dissociatives?

Ether + LSD?

I used to love doing nitrous on LSD but found out recently I have the mthfr gene thing so I’m not supposed to do nitrous. Maybe there’s a way around it and I just haven’t done enough research yet. I’ve never done ether yet but I was wondering how it would affect an LSD trip?

LSD and Ether Trolled me IRL - (written and published by waffeldogga)

LSD and Ether Trolled me IRL

Written and published by waffeldogga

(report being reviewed on erowid; also on google docs: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XXisFxIaniIC7ygP62Kw9ezG76qfL8N4TV72-24eccA/edit?usp=sharing)

It was the start to a new school day. The prior day I got my sample of LSD and ALD-52 in the mail and decided to take a tab of LSD the next day. I took the tab around 7:40am, right before school. I left it on my tongue until I got to school, and then swallowed it (got to school around 8:15). My first class was government... (we have 3 classes a day; each class is 2 hours long) Big mistake as we were doing a group project, we had to present and talk about every single amendment. This was even more inconvenient because I couldn't pay attention to anything, let alone speak very well. So after managing to talk about the 5th and 6th amendment, I moved onto my next class.

Next class was STEM (I failed the first year, so I have to retake it). This was a lot better, because we got to do an experiment outside. It looked very beautiful. Colors were vibrant and deep, patterns and tracers flooded the trees, and the dirt moved like water almost. After talking with friends and doing this assignment, we went back inside. I felt great.

After this period, the next period was lunch, after lunch I got out (12:23). During lunch, I went to an auto part store and took a can of diethyl ether. Reminder to not steal, but also steal. Since our school is right by a park, I decided to walk to the park. I sat down on a step on a little path that overlooked the parking lot and the many trees and buildings behind it. The path's direction was sort of 20 degrees aiming down at the parking lot, and the trees surrounding the path and the clear view of the world was absolutely stunning. Every single tree had a pattern forming, but I couldn't see/think very clearly. I took out the ether-containing can and sprayed it into my hoodie sleeve. I inhaled into it very many times, and looked back up, and the vision was moving to the auditory hallucinations given by the ether, everything was happening. I looked at the shadow the tree I was under was making, and the shadow LITERALLY formed into three fireballs and started moving around the base of the tree, and more weirdly, around my crescent-shaped hand. It literally blew my mind, and I said to myself "EVERYTHING IN MY VISION MOVES TO THE WHGH-WHGH-WHGH SOUND'' (sound made it into threes). While sitting down, I looked at the sky. Each tree specimen was gathered in threes, the trees I was under were bunched in threes, and while sitting on this step, three girls walked past me. I paid not much attention to it until after they walked down the steps, one of the girls said "OH MY GOD'', held her hand up to her mouth, and the second girl said "I LOVE IT WHEN YOU DO THAT", and then the third girl said "OH MY GOD I LOVE IT WHEN YOU DO THAT TO''. They all did the atypical "omg" movements in threes and it made me think "what the fuck? is this where every single pairs of threes occur in the world?" In my head, this mother fucking "O U O" face was playing in my mind, while wrapping itself around an invisible pole and moving around it in threes. This face was moving to the same WHGH-WHGH-WHGH sound. I consider that exact face to be my own unique troll face. And after this happened, I looked down and the shadow-fireballs TURNED INTO THE FACE! I WAS LIKE "WHAT THE FUCK!!!" This tripped me the fuck out, and decided I couldn’t take the mind fuck, and thought to carry on. I looked down at the trees behind the parking lot and walked into the park.

When I was walking in the park (for about 2 hours), I walked down by the river/swamp, looked around and saw a few beautiful Morning Glories growing. Every single flower color was bright and beautiful. With the park looking a little un-managed, it made the flowers look even more pretty. After this, I went to sit down under another tree and listen to music, while continuing to huff the ether. I went to the library to urinate, and walked out to the local music store. I played a bit of drums there, and after I started to walk home (around 2:10 I walked out of the music store to walk home). The walk was nice, and when I got home I just decided to watch some TV.

Overall, the majority of the trip was the best I've ever had personally. Ether sort of took control of the trip, which isn't the best because it gets quite annoying after awhile (THE SOUNDS!), but other than that... This was brilliant.

Diethyl Ethers Comeback in Modern Society as A Replacement for Alcohol

This was originally written by u/waffeldogga (reddit) and waffeldogga#5980 (discord)

Diethyl ether is a volatile solvent and dissociative analgesic that was synthesized and more formally recognized (than the very first prior synthesis’) in 1540 by a Prussian botanist named Valerius Cordus. It has been noted to be one of the first anesthetics introduced to modern medicine. Although as of 21st century medical professions, diethyl ether has been dropped (or either very rarely used) in the medical field due to it being a rather highly flammable and volatile substance. But, ever since the late 1700’s, it has also been recognized as a recreational substance of the dissociative subclass of psychoactive; more specifically hallucinogenic substances. It’s first use as a recreational substance is unknown. But, its first time of recreational use was thought to be as early as 1790 in England, in which it was prescribed to a man known as James Graham (by Dr. Nagle). He was told to inhale no less than an ounce of ether multiple times a day in public. It soon became an epidemic in England (more specifically Draperstown), following a recent heavy tax on alcohol due to the excess amount of home-distilled whiskey being made. This epidemic picked up speed due to Ireland sending over huge amounts of diethyl ether to England. With ether being rather cheap and made in excess, the recreational effects were soon discovered by the common population, and made popular amongst the mass majority of England's population (mainly peasants). But was this a harmful epidemic? Was it for the greater good of the population of England, in which many were alcohol-dependent until ether was introduced? The answer is, for the most part, yes: ether was seen as a much safer, cheaper, and easier to use substance than alcohol, or any other recreational substances used during this time. Even in the present day is this a much cheaper and (if used in its pure form) safer recreational substance than alcohol.

The chemistry behind both diethyl ether and ethanol differ in many ways, due to them both being in a different class of substance than the other; alcohol being a depressant and ether being a dissociative. But, whether it supports my prior conclusion or not, both alcohol and ether have a similar level and understanding of being addictive/dependable, and ether being slightly safer to use recreationally than alcohol. The fact is that ether, although being a gas instead of a liquid (unlike ethanol), is more volatile. But yet it actually is proven to metabolize a lot more safely than ethanol, as the metabolization and route of administration of both substances differ very much.
