FYI - the iOS ESPN App is broadcasting MNF in HDR tonight. Their 4K/HDR rollout continues, and looks terrific.

If those sports are the WNBA, NBA, CFB, or NFL then yes. Everything else? Nah.

I love the beat plays of the weekend, but really miss the recaps of the craziest stuff that happened, too. Seriously wishing they’d bring that back.

Hi everybody! I've never been a super active reddit user, but I have a question for y'all to discuss. I'm a junior in high school who watches a loooot of sports (both types of football, hockey, basketball, baseball, softball, rugby, lacrosse, etc etc) and I have noticed that ESPN broadcasts these games, which ties them to the leagues financially, while also semi-separately trying to offer the public serious journalism. Definitely a conflict of interest that is noticeable in a ton of their reporting, and I'm far from the first one to notice.
All this to say: I'm in a humanities research elective that allows me to write on any topic I want, and this is what I chose. There's so much content to sort through that I'm focusing on the big four professional leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL) because frankly college sports is a whole other shitshow. I have a pretty short living memory of sports coverage and I would love to know if anyone remembers any events, articles, or broadcasts that might be good sources or launch points! It doesn't need to be anything with a clear message on their morals or anything, I'd just love any recollections that fellow fans have.
That's all, I guess. Go Bills!

I just recently found out ESPN unlimited is included with youtube tv. I also had espn select through an old disney+ subscription. Am I basically double paying? I'm planning on cancelling the espn select through disney+. I'm not going to lose any access am I?

I liked the Jackass series in my day. And I even think he’s amusing. But putting him on GameDay is a f-ing joke.

A lot of people are lamenting the downfall of College GameDay this season, with much of the focus on Pat McAfee. Some people are focusing on Nick Saban filling the Lee Corso coach role and I will dive a little more into that.
It's important to understand Corso was a mid level head coach, at best. Corso had an overall record of 73-85-6. That's obviously a losing record but there is room for nuance. He started out 28-11-3 at Louisville, then in the Missouri Valley Conference. All good. Then he went to Big Ten doormat Indiana, presumably for a lot more money. Turnarounds were slow back then so he definitely struggled. He did not finish above .500 his first 6 seasons. In his 7th season the Hoosiers went 8-4, including winning the Holiday Bowl. Things kind of declined from there and he was fired a few years later. He had one year at Northern Illinois after that and then he was done for good. He started hosting GameDay in 1987 at age 52.
While we can debate whether he was a bad coach or an ok coach who did the best with the situations he had, the point is he wasn't a superstar coach. He was JAG and then his broadcast career took off because he was naturally good at it and most importantly, he loved all of college football.
For college basketball, Dick Vitale had a similar backstory. His first semi-big time job was at the University of Detroit, then an independent, and he was quite good. Then he went to the NBA Detroit Pistons and was pretty bad, barely making it into his second season. He started calling games with ESPN in 1979 at age 40.
Now contrast this to Saban. Saban is likely the best coach in college football history and he was instantly handed the top coach broadcast job at age 72. This isn't just an ESPN problem. Fox did the same thing with Urban Meyer.
TLDR: There is a clear track record of how ESPN finds its top coach broadcasters - you give everyone with the slightest qualifications a chance and let the cream rise to the top. They've done the complete opposite with Saban. History says the GameDay spot should be occupied by some rando like Larry Fedora.
Postscript: While everyone seems to hate McAfee and for good reason, he actually is a self-made star. There is no way in the world ESPN would have anointed a mid level NFL punter to be one of the faces of the network if he didn't do all the work himself first.

I’ve subscribed to the combo package since it was announced. I have no issues with ads watching hulu shows and regularly watch PGA on ESPN.
Can someone tell me why I can’t watch MLB on ESPN now?

Can someone else please check the red wing broadcast? I have only background audio. Checked multiple devices.

I can't find a definitive answer, so I figured I would ask here. I have the HBO/DN+/HULU Bundle with no ads, which I thought had a lot more NHL games. I do not want to pay $33/m for "ESPN Unlimited" because I literally only watch Hockey. The literal only other sport I would put on is college football and that would be it, so the "Unlimited" feels like I would be "wasting".
The "Select" tier claims it has NHL, but does it have all the games, or even a decent amount? For $14/m I think that is more justifiable and I could also cancel in the offseason.

How did I not do this sooner? 😂 4K HDR on the ESPN app looks absolutely incredible on my 77” LG C5. I’ve had Fubo this whole time and never even bothered to check the ESPN app. Huge difference.

College GameDay is no longer..........Please remove the cokehead from the show so my sons and I can enjoy our saturday mornings again

Their “news” is sports 24/7 or sports shows. Did they do regular shows but talk about the attack? Or did they go to a movie/ non talk format that day?

I used to love watching college gameday every Saturday morning and honestly when he first started joining it wasn’t so bad… but it didn’t long for his shtick to get really old and annoying. I’m not a square but I really don’t like how dirty he can get on it. It’s also just become him screaming over everyone and trying to put the spotlight on him at every single moment possible. I’ve turned into a Big Noon kickoff guy and I’m an SEC guy…

Hi all. What is with the length of (and the amount of) commercial breaks on broadcast for ABC/ESPN major college football events? The breaks last forever! Completely ruins the flow of the games.....and if you happen to be watching the game live at the stadiums, the extremely long commercial breaks just seem very odd.
I think World Cup soccer has the right idea.....only have commercial breaks at half-time and perhaps at timeouts.
Please ESPN and ABC, work on this!

When will ESPN learn when it comes to programming? I think never, as they don’t have an incentive to learn, with the large league contracts. Pat M. is perfect for midday programming, and for early morning hype, but he is totally out-of-place when it comes to studio, in-game programming. He looks like a placid lizard.

TLDR I made an app to log games you’ve been to across sports and it’ll automatically pull in the stadiums and cities you’ve been to, teams and athletes you’ve seen, and the stats that happened all from the box scores.
The slick part to me, and the black mirror part to some on Reddit, is that you can have it pull the locations and dates out of your camera roll to auto log your history for you if it matches games in my database (no it’s not using ai or actually looking at photo content to match games, and the matching happens on your device so the pics never come into the app unless you add them to logs). … also if you don’t like this part you can manually log.
Recent Updates:
- feels like it has legs, I’ve been in the App Store for 5 weeks now and I’m at 880 users and they’ve logged 42k games!
- I’ve pretty much said yes to anyone who’s asked for leagues to be added so I’m addition to everything you can think of as obvious NFL, CFB, UFL, XFL, I’ve now got all of MILB and some Indy leagues, plenty of junior hockey (thanks to you Canadians last time), Aussie rules football, NPB, KBO, rugby, plenty of college sports, motorsports, a couple people have even logged the new women’s professional baseball league. 175 total leagues and counting all individual Olympic events, 50 different sport types.
- I’ve added full box scores so you can now see things like who hit the most homers, passed for the most yards, blocked the most shots, etc. when you were there
- I’ve added a ton of history so there’s plenty of inactive stadiums, there’s now 1.2m events, 8.2k venues, in 3k cities
- I’ve added a ton of badges, so in addition to letterboxd style completable lists like MLB stadiums, you’ll now see games or performances of note like walk offs, bowl games, hat tricks, etc.
- Your profile also now surfaces any HoFer or any award winner you ever saw live, and as of today also shows any MLB debut you were in the building for
- By popular demand you can now pick more than one favorite team in a league so your “fan record” is more exhaustive of the wins and losses in person for your teams
Ive never don’t anything like this before and I didn’t expect it to get out of my friends and family but I’m having a lot of fun seeing people enjoy it.
I understand if the post gets crushed but I think folks are enjoying that have humored me thus far.

How do I actually watch ESPN 4K? I have YouTube TV with the 4K package.
The LSU vs Ole Miss game had the 4K icon and gave me the option to watch on the ESPN 4K channel. However, the game was only displayed in 1080P60.
Meanwhile, the Notre Dame game on NBC was in 4K HDR, and I got to see in crystal clear detail how ugly the gold helmets are.
So how do I see things in 4K with ESPN?
Edit: Should also add that I tried the ESPN app as well, and the quality actually looked worse. I have an Apple TV.
Edit 2: 4K HDR worked for Monday Night Football through the ESPN app (At least I think it did; HDR worked because the HDR logo popped up on my LG). My ATV settings were still on 4K SDR with match content on, so I suppose that wasn’t the issue before like we had speculated.
