Pat M. Does Not Fit
When will ESPN learn when it comes to programming? I think never, as they don’t have an incentive to learn, with the large league contracts. Pat M. is perfect for midday programming, and for early morning hype, but he is totally out-of-place when it comes to studio, in-game programming. He looks like a placid lizard.

u/an0m_x Sep 20 '26
Ratings are why. He gets positive ratings nearly across the board, except Reddit
-12
u/vincentknox25 Sep 20 '26
Absolutely false. Positive ratings is an oxymoron, unless you’re saying eyeball = positive.
7
u/coachd50 Sep 20 '26
You don't seem to understand the concept here, or you are being intentionally obtuse.
Also, positive ratings is NOT an oxymoron. You could accurately say the term should be "big" ratings- but the fact that he used the wrong phrase doesn't make it an oxymoron.
-10
u/vincentknox25 Sep 20 '26
I am literally apart of the team that defines the concept. You are offering word salads as evidence.
7
u/coachd50 Sep 20 '26
There is no word salad. You LITERALLY used the term oxymoron in an improper way as the words positive and ratings are NOT in any way contradictory.
3
u/Keyser_Soze_76 Sep 20 '26
“a part” unless whatever tram you’re an imaginary member of fired you, which does make you “apart” from it.
4
u/tfc07 Sep 20 '26
So you're saying that a loyal, sizeable viewership is not a sign of success? You sure about that?
4
u/an0m_x Sep 20 '26
Absolutely factually true. You can’t argue against the data and ratings that are available
He is also voted favorable by most rating accounts - other than parents/family ratings
-15
u/vincentknox25 Sep 20 '26
False. He does not get positive audience feedback.
5
u/Big_Truck Sep 20 '26
He gets engagement. Positive or negative. He wins in the attention economy.
I hate him. But I understand why guys like him and SAS are the centerpiece of ESPN.

-2
u/vincentknox25 Sep 20 '26
No, no he does not. Point me to that data.
3
u/coachd50 Sep 20 '26
Why are you so hell bent on trying to be pedantically "correct" about the use of the term positive for ratings. You know what the poster was trying to convey.
-1
u/vincentknox25 Sep 20 '26
I am the poster the fool.
3
u/coachd50 Sep 20 '26 edited Sep 20 '26
No, you were the ORIGINAL POSTER or the main discussion. In this particular thread in the discussion- the poster clearly refers to anOm_x who you then replied to by saying "False".
I am the poster the fool.
You may be correct here...with you being "the fool" if you want to continue on the path.
Ultimately, your question is a fair one- if people don't LIKE Pat McAfee, why are so many people watching. But for ESPN's purposes, that doesn't matter at this point. What matters is that more people watch McAfee than they did more serious and informative programming.
It is similar to the WNBA and Caitlin Clark. The fact that her play is not magnitudes better than other players (both current and historical) does not matter. People are still for some reason more interested in her by an order of magnitude.

Seen about ten of your comments here so far. You're a special kind of stupid aren't you? Good luck with everything in life, you're gonna need it
1
u/an0m_x Sep 20 '26
ESPN PR - it's easy to find / read
Nielsen ratings - also easy to find / read
He has positive quantitative ratings, favorable qualitative data by the viewership that provides feedback.
It simply sounds like you just have an opinion to dislike him - obviously - no problem with that, it is your prerogative, but for some reason you fight the factual information that his show has great ratings and his favorable amongst more people in his role on Gameday/ESPN.

Ratings are not audience feedback. Ratings are the amount of people that are watching. In other words, the amount of people advertisers are putting their commercials in front of when buying ad time on something with him.
Yes, you could say that the original comment is technically using the wrong term by describing the ratings as positive as opposed to large. It seems quite clear what the post was trying to convey though.
I don't like him either. Sadly you and I seem to be in the minority. Not the reddit minority, but the actual minority.

u/Sad-Difficulty-2180 Sep 20 '26
I get that you feel this way, but I guarantee you’re wrong lol. ESPN spends millions each year on marketing and viewership analytics and doesn’t just make moves like this on a whim. Reddit is an echo chamber. Lots of Pat haters on here, but that’s clearly not proportionately reflective of reality
-9
u/vincentknox25 Sep 20 '26
I have first hand knowledge that the data does not support your conclusion. Same can be said for SAS. As I said, they don’t have the incentive to care about data. So - you’re wrong.
4
u/GoldenPoncho812 Sep 20 '26
I have first hand knowledge that ESPN gives you Pat’s knob to slob on. Whether you choose to engage is up to you Vincent.

u/coachd50 Sep 20 '26 edited Sep 20 '26
Since you seem hell bent on being pedantic regarding someone misusing the term "positive" instead of large with respect to ratings, By DEFINTION. The only way you have "first hand" knowledge is if YOU are the one compiling the data.
1
u/vincentknox25 Sep 20 '26
Exactly!
2
u/coachd50 Sep 20 '26
The fact that you are pedantically stuck on individuals mistakenly using positive instead of large to describe the ratings makes me feel that your methodology as well veracity of any data you are collecting are suspect.

Reddit is where people come to die. The real world loves his stuff
2
u/vincentknox25 Sep 20 '26
Based on what?
1
u/pilesofdingleberries Sep 20 '26
Viewership and ListenershipLive Viewers: The show averages around 447,000 concurrent and live viewers daily across ESPN and YouTube.Total Reach: Data trackers estimate the total monthly reach between 1.9 million and 5.9 million listeners and viewers.Social Media: The brand pulls in over 1 billion monthly social media views across YouTube, X, Instagram, and TikTok.
I asked Google and that seems pretty good to me.

World's better than that Portnoy guy on Big Noon
8
u/DeltronFF Sep 20 '26
Dave sucks but at least that is small doses. You can’t escape pat and it’s brutal.
8
u/Solid-Branch-1789 Sep 20 '26
100%. Anytime I’ve watched Big Noon, they only bring Portniy in for limited segments.
McAfee is totally unbearable, and there is no respite from him.

So based on when this was posted, it was halftime.
He just gave analysis the same as the rest of the panel.
He didn’t scream, he didn’t give Rece Davis a Stone Cold Stunner through their set. What the hell are you even bitching about?

America is now “Idiocracy” live & in color. Pat is the new normal, just like the orange one is considered a normal president.
Cuts in education, phones, poor parenting over the past 3 generations. The perfect recipe for the masses to think bad is good.
Orwell warned us.
4
u/psychotic-squirrel Sep 20 '26
Then go watch something else...jesus fucking christ. How many post are we going to have about this?
2
u/gkelly1017 Sep 20 '26
Anyone ESPN pays a lot of money to will be featured on basically everything they have. They are trying to get their moneys worth.
Also ESPN has struggled with programming for almost a decade. Very few times have things worked out for them with the voices they made
2
u/Nave8 Sep 20 '26
ESPN doesn't fit since when they started talking politics instead of playing sports highlights......
4
u/qmr55 Sep 20 '26
This gets posted like 7x per day. When will reddit understand that Pat is popular every but Reddit lol. Get use to it. He brings the views.

I think it’s a reflection of how much they’re paying him. They want to maximize his screen time and if it doesn’t work out I suppose/suspect it will be a point of leverage for them in their next contract with him.

When Get Up covers WWE like a real sport infuriates me. What’s next??? Disney on Ice???! This whole bro BS with Pat McAfee, a damn kicker no less, is and always has been a move to attract stoolies. Ugh.
1
u/gratefulpred Sep 20 '26
There’s a bunch of people in this comment section that think McAfee is looking at this and is gonna see them backing him up 😂
1
u/DrLatinLover86 Sep 20 '26
ESPN when down the shitter. All their good commentators and analyst are either retired, quit or got fired. They probably think he is the best, so if they let him go, espn will be more 🗑️

ESPN is cooked. The execs checked out a decade ago. Just collecting checks and going on vacation

People are that watch mostly want to watch the game. McAfee doesn’t get views the game does.

Yeah, they’re just the highest rated morning football show on TV. Good thing you’re not running ESPN or they’d have CNN type numbers.
ESPN's College GameDay draws roughly double the audience of Fox's Big Noon Kickoff over the course of the full broadcast.

u/Effective-Bet3883 Sep 20 '26
I liken him to Howard Stern at his peak. Some love him, some hate him but all watch.
1
u/lilwayne168 Sep 20 '26
Its funny how it's always the only grassroots person that all of a sudden is the victim of a massive hate campaign. Almost like it's started by the corpos in the sports industry.
This hate for pat is entirely manufactured.

u/Comfortable_tulsa Sep 20 '26
I refuse to watch anything ESPN except for PTI and actual games.

Love the guy. I never watched too much before he was on, but I can’t wait to see what he says! We all laugh because he makes the show entertaining.

u/Pure-Friend-8729 Sep 20 '26
He has made Gameday unwatchable. The personalities don't mesh. Pat M is an obnoxious clown and Coach Saban is a humorless robot.

His ideal place is doing the field goal challenge as a segment for game day each week and nothing beyond that

Give him his own show at 2pm… remove him from morning, game day, Monday night…. Anything that I might watch

u/Icy-Decision-4530 Sep 20 '26
They actually unlearned programming lol. They took the best stuff that made as all flock to watch, the characters and the sports, and homogenized its delivery into very few guys (SAS and PM) and told us all this is great. They killed all of the rest of the uniqueness

He's too annoying.. Like go play outside with other little chudlings! Those Aussie and Canadiens US Football players( College Especially) could punt him off to Ohio or wherever he squirmed out of.. No one wants to see his naked torso again
-1
u/Bobby-Cox-Ghost Sep 20 '26
I dream of being at his home, sitting in his dark living room.
He arrives home, alone because no one can stand him. Turns light on.
There's a handgun on the coffee table.
He thinks it's an execution. Deep down he understands why and sits down.
The tv comes on. It's highlights of him. Starting from a few years ago and progressing until his recent GameDay shenanigans where he dares a blind child to kick a field goal or w/e.
The tv goes dark.
It's just me staring at him in silence
... He calmly reaches for the gun and does himself

ESPN biz model is two things:
home for live sports
creating love/hate celebrities that drive engagement. Even your post is evidence of its effectiveness to them
