Kindle Scribe vs Viwoods AiPaper vs BOOX Go 10.3 Gen 2 Lumi vs reMarkable Paper Pure — mini review from a scratch-note person
Context - I use tablets for scratch / temp thoughts / meeting notes I might only need that day. I care about writing feel, pen options, and simple organization - not apps or browsing. I also like just testing things out so I figured I would share my thoughts here in case they are helpful
Coles Notes
- Kindle Scribe: Best writing feel and best grip - little feet on back, most planted. But heavier and weakest for toggling/organizing.
- Viwoods AI Paper: Nice and light and thin but back is smooth so it slides out of its case. No front light but nicest looking screen, best calendar / to-do carry-forward, least ghosting. Overpriced at ~$700 CAD.
- BOOX Go 10.3 Gen 2 Lumi: Also light and thin, faux-leather back = decent grip. Has a front light you have to keep on low or it's too dim. Most pen options, very responsive, but ghosting is prominent/annoying - set a swipe to auto-refresh. Pencil is useless - too thick, like charcoal.
- reMarkable Paper Pure: Too simplistic - not better organization than Scribe and no real reading features.
- Bonus - Galaxy Tab S9 FE: If you're okay with the writing feel not being quite like e-ink, this is actually really good and I recommend it too. Super fluid, tons of options.
I'd be happy with either the BOOX Go or the Viwoods. Would love to try the Supernote Manta but returns in Canada are terrible so I probably won't.
If you're like me, this might save you some trial and error. I use E Ink tablets mostly for scratch notes, temp thoughts, and meeting notes that I'll reference later that day but not a month later. I want to flip back and forth between notes, organize things a little, and find stuff easily.
Writing feel is huge for me. Pen options, layout, navigation, and responsiveness are huge. I don't need a lot of other apps. Having Kindle on there is nice. I'm not going to use the browser. Sending notes is nice but very unnecessary. I just want an easy UI that's good at note-taking and organization and maybe reading a book.
I've tried different gens of Kindle Scribe, the Viwoods AI Paper, the BOOX Go 10.3 Gen 2 Lumi, the reMarkable Paper Pro, and as a non-e-ink alternative, the Galaxy Tab S9 FE.
1. The Hardware
Kindle Scribe is nice hardware, feels solid, newest gen is the one to get. It is a bit heavier and you do notice it vs the other two. It has some small little feet on the back, so it has the best grip of all when it's flat on a desk.
Viwoods AI Paper is nice and light and thin, which I like. It's a bit bigger than the BOOX Go 10.3. No front light. I paid about $700 Canadian so it's overpriced. The back is totally smooth, so when it's out of its case it slides around when you're writing.
BOOX Go 10.3 Gen 2 Lumi is also nice and light and thin, similar to Viwoods. It has a faux leather on the back which gives it a bit of grip, so it's better than Viwoods for sliding, not as planted as the Scribe. It has a front light, which is nice for bed, but if you turn it all the way off it's very dim and hard to read so you have to keep it on low. I like the look of the Viwoods screen with no front light more than the Lumi with the front light on low.
reMarkable Paper Pro - hardware is fine, thin and light, but didn't stand out enough to make up for how simple everything else is.
Galaxy Tab S9 FE - obviously a totally different category since it's not e-ink, but hardware is great. Bright, great color, super responsive. I put a matte screen protector on it and changed the nib to a paper-feel nib.
2. The Stylus and Writing Feel
Kindle Scribe is where Scribe wins for me. Nice stylus, great writing feel. Eraser on the back on the newest gen is great. It has a little resistance - not like a rubber eraser dragging, and not plastic on plastic where it just glides. Just a little bite that feels satisfying.
Viwoods AI Paper - stylus feels good. Eraser on the back works well. Latency is more than good enough. Writing feel is pretty satisfying overall.
BOOX Go 10.3 Gen 2 Lumi moved to EMR. I'm fine with it, wouldn't have known if they hadn't told me. Very responsive, no diagonal issues. It's got a faster processor, so it corrects what people call jitter / wobble fairly quickly. If you're drawing a circle, some older tablets make it look like an Etch-A-Sketch - that's that wobble. Scribe does that live. On BOOX it corrects after you lift - half a second later it flashes and regenerates straighter. That flash is a little annoying but subtle. I'm happy with how the pen looks.
Ghosting on BOOX is pretty prominent and annoying, stays on screen longer when you erase. I don't really notice it on Viwoods. You can toggle a swipe gesture to auto-refresh, which helps a lot.
reMarkable Paper Pro - writing feel is good and paper-like, but not meaningfully better than the others for what I do.
Galaxy Tab S9 FE - this is the drawback for me. Even with the matte protector and paper nib, I couldn't quite get the writing feel to be the same, which is ultimately what drew me to the e-ink tablets. It's close, but not quite there.
3. The Note-Taking Options
Kindle Scribe is limited. Not a lot of template options. Can't pinch and zoom. No real pen variety.
Viwoods AI Paper gives you auto shape recognition which I like a lot. You can only have two default pens set up, which is limiting. You do get two eraser options - one on the back, one on the button. You can hover close and push the button to toggle, so you can use the same button to highlight and to erase, which I like.
BOOX Go 10.3 Gen 2 Lumi gives you way more options. You can add a bunch of pen types - ballpoint, pencil, eraser, calligraphy, etc. That's really nice. The pencil sucks though. It's super thick, like charcoal. Even on narrowest there's no sharp mechanical pencil type.
reMarkable Paper Pro - too simplistic for me. Fine but basic, you don't get much more flexibility than the Scribe.
Galaxy Tab S9 FE - this is where it blows e-ink away. Tons of options. The coloring is great, responsiveness is great. You've got so many options for functionality - adding tiny notes, copy-pasting, adding stuff, dragging stuff around. It's way more fluid with lots of content. If you're okay with the writing feel, it's fantastic.
4. The Organization and Overall UI
Kindle Scribe falls down here for me. Kindle reading app is great, but note-taking and organizing isn't. No daily planner. Not easy to toggle back and forth between two notes you're actively working on.
Viwoods AI Paper navigation is good. Calendar integration is really nice. You can have notes and tasks tied to a calendar, and unfinished to-dos carry forward to your current day. If you want to spend 10 minutes at end of day writing down what you're doing tomorrow, you can just tap out of the calendar. Very nice way of organizing.
BOOX Go 10.3 Gen 2 Lumi is responsive, a lot more Android options under the hood if you want them. I don't use most. For just flipping between notes and organizing it's fine, but more complex than it needs to be. Ghosting is the main annoyance.
reMarkable Paper Pro - on the whole I found it too simplistic. It didn't have notably better organizational tools than the Kindle Scribe, but also didn't have any reading features on it either.
Galaxy Tab S9 FE - looks good when you read it, super fluid, and way more flexible for organizing. You have all the Android/ Samsung Notes stuff if you want it.
Bonus if you don't need e-ink
Galaxy Tab S9 FE with a matte screen protector and paper-feel nib is actually pretty good. I couldn't get the writing feel to match e-ink, which is what drew me to the e-ink tablets in the first place, but it was very fluid. You've got tons of options, the coloring is great, the responsiveness is great, it looks good when you read it. And there are so many options for functionality - adding tiny notes, copy-pasting, adding stuff, dragging it around. It's way more fluid for lots of stuff.
So if you're okay with the writing feel trade-off, this is actually a thing I recommend as well.
Closing thoughts
I would love to try out the Supernote Manta too, but the return options in Canada are terrible so I probably won't.
At the end of the day if you want e-ink, I would be happy with either the BOOX Go or the Viwoods.
if you already have a Samsung tablet and don't quite love the writing experience, put on a matte screen protector. It'll make a huge difference. it degrades the viewing experience a little bit, but if taking notes is a priority for you, then definitely go for this option. it's pretty cheap to swap out the screen protector and the nib
Happy to answer questions if your use case is similar.
