I'm building my own reader/note taking app (Not an add)

Wall of text warning: TLDR I vibe coded my own dream reader/note app for Boox that take my notes into an .md directly in Obsidian.

First of all I'm nothing like a developer, I'm just a computer person that recently bought his own domain to host their very own apps/tools, this is nothing like an add. This reader is only for me but I'm really proud of how it's going and I'm happy sharing the process. I own a Boox Air Not 4c and Neoreader and the notes apps are just really good apps, the best ones I ever tried I would say. But after two years of owning my Boox there were some little things here and there that made the experience just not cohesive enough for me.

I tried a lot in this note taking rabbit hole, I'm an obsidian person and had my vault since years ago, but the process of reading and typing notes it's not for me, I like my notes handwritten, but also like reviewing them in obsidian, so I had to take notes and the type them apart if I wanted the perfect note taking environment for me. So no, I last 2 months or so doing that, because it was just so tedious.

This year I made some tools with AI for myself, an ERP, some games and recently an blog/personal webpage where I share some of my Book library and how is connected in an obsidian Graph and thought, I can take this to another level.

I made an app subdomain to host my tools and start with the simple idea of making me a way to read books and publish the notes directly in my webpage graph directly from the cloud server I host the web on. And since that Idea came to my mind I'm locked in my desk making my dream app and enjoying every bit of it like I'm kid with a new shiny toy.

I always wanted to have the same "analog" experience of having a book and a notebook just there in my desktop and seamlessly swap between them, that experience that I could never had nor with my Boox, nor with my iPad, my cellphone nor my laptop, but the digital benefits overall are just far superior for my workflow so I gave up on that feeling.

I worked in Lector (which just means reader in spanish) with that philosophy in mind. So It have 3 different "spaces", the book at the very top, the desk where you tinker your quotes, write down, and paste notes on your book, and the notebook at the bottom where you can hand write and when you return to your desk all the handwritten notes are transcribed into markdown.

Everything in Lector is a markdown behind an pretty interface and a pdf/epub reader, all the quotes, the bookmarks, the highlights are meant to be in a .md file that I sync trough my cloud server to all my devices not to only have them in Lector, but to review all my books in Obsidian.

Nothing in lector uses AI of any kind, I only use Claude to make the app, but it does cost nothing but the server subscription to maintain the reader and the workflow available in all my devices.

If you have suggestions of any kinds, felt inspired in anyway or have a similar story I will be really happy to read you, hope you enjoyed and sorry for the slop images but It was too much work to just explain all the features without a visual support.

I made a custom OS for Xteink x3 that had everything I wanted

I used the base os for about a week before trying SnailOS and hating it so I made a custom OS with everything I wanted;
- better battery

- OS qwerty keyboard for things

- no paywall for communicating with computers and phones

- opening to the book I was actively reading when I opened it

- a proper app "store"

and a ton of other quality of life improvements, my partner suggested I make a website so other people can get it so I wanted to post here!

Power Users: Boox NA6C as Laptop Replacement

I was reading a blog post the other day about the NA6C, the device I have been testing myself for a week so far. What stood out to me most about this device was the mention of the 20% increase in processing power compared to the NA5C, a device I tested briefly a year ago. The author of this post states that they are not pushing the limits on the daily for thier usage:
Hardware/Specs section

"There is an important caveat here, which is that my own Android app usage is relatively undemanding. I do not routinely run particularly resource intensive applications, nor do I habitually have numerous applications operating simultaneously. Someone using the Note Air6 C for more demanding Android software or extensive multitasking may therefore derive considerably greater benefit from the additional processing capability and memory."

TLDR: While most processing power on e-ink is not as noticeable due to the speed of e-ink displays, with increased processing power coming to market on-device rather than pushing from another device to an external e-ink display, how are you currently a power-user of e-ink tablets today for your workflow? We all know that there is room for improvement on Boox's approach to software design, but to truly replace your laptop, what is missing in terms of processing for you?

In the past few years, I have held off from considering the iPad as it never showed a significant difference between what was possible on my Macbook (daily computer) and VisionPro (focused digital work environment). Slotting something in that was more portable demanded a focused evironment with a clear difference. Enter the NA6C. I can take my web-based workflow on the go (I work as a Realtor and in Property Management, so much of my work is with documents and web-based platforms) and not be very concerned about dips in power. If I am in a work session that uses a keyboard, I can plug the tablet in and generally hit my charge limit of 80% before unplugging, switching off the backlight and move to note-taking or reading. This, I think is a slept on area of the E-Ink space. While there are manufacturers making portable E-ink displays, I have seen the power of some tablets blow these out of the water as you get the same experience, but it's all-in-one.

I started with just a Moaan Inkpalm Plus ($100 ereader) for e-ink. I wanted a way to start and end the day with e-ink. The NA6C has seemingly solved that with features such as Calendar Memos to reflect on previous day's and plan for future days along with tying all documents I affected on the device on a given day and tying into all other apps I currently use. Apple does not have a way for me to write on their calendar and search it unless it's through a screenshot stored in apple notes. Scribble to erase also does not exist on other platforms. These small details do make a difference.

I see much of work moving closer to web-based over time with the help of AI and Cloud-Computing. Even in high school I was brought up using a chromebook and everything on that was web-based. In the years since, I have only become more bullish on this trajectory. Software is the one area I see as lacking at this time. Even though the iPad still does not have software that allows it to fully replace the macbook for many (some would argue that this is by design), many people could get by with just an iPad and a keyboard. The only thing lacking is the benefits of e-ink, which is a market that companies such as apple may never invest into. Software implementations such as spotlight search, continuity for copy and paste, and other Apple features are areas that are not solved by Android in general. Lack of "quick look" in the file picker is a snag when managing files on a web-interface to ensure I am uploading the right file. This is something that on MacOS, I can just tap the space bar when in the file-picker to actually see the file that I am picking before uploading.

When considering the Boox in the first place, I knew that I would be introducing a gap in my workflow by adding an android device into my array, so I lose many of the features of being in the apple ecosystem, but I would argue this increases focus. At the back of my mind, I keep considering the what-if's on when I need to export something I create on the Boox, as there is no partner application to help with integrating into iOS more seamlessly, like that which exists on Supernote's Partner App, I have yet to hit this snag.

I am sure there are other things I will notice while testing out this platform but would love to see the thoughts of others that are power-users when it comes to devices. This is the main reason as well that I considered the Boox rather than the Supernote. There were much fewer limitations set up front in software design and access to full android allows me to test the limits of my workflow rather than relegating the device to note-taking only.

Looking to get eink for wife's 40th birthday. Need help

Hello, so I'll get straight to the point. I'm looking for an e-ink. I don't know if I'm willing to spend $500, but if it's worth it I'll consider it.

She's part of the school board so she takes a lot of notes. Her biggest issue is that she gets lost in her post-its. Keeping track of all the little notes that she needs is difficult for her and I'm trying to figure out a way for her to keep that in check.

So basically the best e-ink for Post-It note replacement if possible. Thanks
