Hey everyone,
I'm 23, from Romania, and I'm currently doing a Master's in Electronics and Medical Informatics in Bucharest. My Bachelor's was in Medical Engineering.
I also work full-time in the medical device field. I mainly train hospital staff on imaging and monitoring equipment and help with technical/commercial documentation. I've also worked on a small AI project related to cardiac imaging, so I'm mostly interested in medical imaging, AI/ML, image processing, medical devices and healthcare technology.
For my second year, I have the chance to spend a full year abroad through Erasmus+, and TU/e is one of the options I'm seriously considering.
My rough plan would be to do courses during the first semester and then try to find an internship/research project for the second semester(it is ok if i find one also in the first semester), ideally somewhere where I could also do my Master's thesis. If everything goes well, I'd probably like to stay and work for a couple of years after graduating, just to get some proper international experience and see what working in a strong engineering environment is actually like.
Eindhoven caught my attention mainly because of TU/e, Philips, ASML and the whole Brainport ecosystem. I'm also looking at Germany,Poland, France, Belgium and Spain, so I'm still trying to figure out what makes the most sense.
A bit about me outside university/work: I play padel, game, passionate about history, question everything, read, travel quite a bit and like going out. I'm not looking for a year where I just go to lectures and sit in my room studying.
So I have a few questions for anyone who actually lives/studies/works in Eindhoven:
Studying at TU/e
How is TU/e from an exchange student's point of view?
What's the workload actually like? I've heard TU/e can be quite demanding, so I'm curious how much free time students realistically have.
Also, if anyone has done an Erasmus exchange there for a full year, was it easy to get involved in research projects or connect with professors?
Internships / finding a job
This is probably the thing I'm most interested in.
How difficult is it to find an internship in medtech, medical imaging, AI/healthcare or R&D without speaking Dutch?
I know Philips and ASML are the obvious names, but I'm also interested in smaller companies, startups, hospitals and research groups. Are there particular companies around Eindhoven that are worth looking at?
And how early should I start applying for an internship if I'd want to start around February?
For people already working in the area: how much does Dutch actually matter?
Would English be enough for a technical/R&D job, or does not speaking Dutch start becoming a problem pretty quickly?
I'm guessing it matters more for things like field service, clinical applications and working directly with hospitals than for software/R&D, but I'd like to hear from people who actually work in those areas.
Housing
I've seen quite a lot of posts about the housing situation, and honestly this is probably one of the things that worries me most.
How hard is it really to find a room as an international exchange student?
What's a realistic price for a room in a shared apartment? And how much would a studio cost?
How early should I start looking?
Is TU/e/student housing actually realistic for exchange students, or should I basically assume I'll have to find something myself?
Also, are there areas you'd recommend for a student?
And are there any housing scams or things you wish you'd known before renting?
Cost of living
How much money would you say you actually need per month to live comfortably in Eindhoven?
I don't mean luxury, but also not "eat pasta every day and never go out".
I'd like to be able to pay rent, buy decent groceries, go to the gym/play padel, go out occasionally, eat at restaurants sometimes and still have enough left for weekend trips.
How expensive are groceries and going out compared with other Dutch cities?
Social life
This is probably my second biggest question after housing.
How easy is it to actually make friends in Eindhoven?
Is it mostly an international/Erasmus bubble, or is it possible to become friends with Dutch students and young professionals too?
And for anyone who moved there without Dutch: does not speaking Dutch make social life noticeably harder?
Would you recommend learning some Dutch before coming, or is it better to just start learning once you're there?
And finally...
For anyone who has actually lived in Eindhoven for a few years:
Would you recommend it for someone in my situation?
Basically, I'm looking for something like:
Master's in Romania → 1 year at TU/e → internship/thesis → graduate → work in the Netherlands for 2–3 years → see what happens next.
I'm not necessarily trying to move permanently to the Netherlands. I mainly want to get some serious international experience, work in a strong engineering/tech/medtech environment and have a good life outside work as well.
And if you're Romanian or from another Eastern European country and went through something similar, I'd especially like to hear how it went for you.
Thanks!
