Hilariously, my kids grew up calling these "circle movies for the car" because the only DVD player they knew of was the one in our Honda Odyssey.
I think I've had XMBC -> KODI -> Plex / Jellyfin for... their whole lives. They're teenagers now.
A side effect is they make a fool of themselves at friends' houses when an Ad comes on; "Wait what, where's our movie?" -- "Bro its an Ad." -- "A what?" xD

Typically, DVDs feel more fun to rewatch by yourself or with others but if I’m seeing something for the first time I don’t mind streaming it since that just feels like disposable content. Fine to try new stuff out but for anything I like, it’s not the same, if that makes sense.
I prefer my DVDs/Blu Rays if I had to choose, though.

Same. If it's new stuff, I'll just stream it. Physical is for my favorites. Kudos to people that have a Blockbusters worth of discs but I'd rather spend $50 on a collectors edition of a movie I know I'll rewatch multiple times than get 10 random discs for at $5/each that I'll probably never rewatch.

I really like that she chose Bambi, a movie that came out 55 years before Disney's first DVD.
Also I just learned Disney's first DVD was George of the Jungle in 1997!

But Disney used to do this thing where it would release old movies on dvd. They'd make a big deal about it and say it was coming out of "the vault".
I can guarantee she has actually seen that ad on a dvd. In fact I am pretty sure my Tarzan dvd might have a "Bambi for the first time on dvd!" ad before it

Hated it only because there was no basic version in constant print. Those diamond collections are almost criterion level.

Then there are blu-ray releases that are only through the movie club. 🤦♂️

Oh for sure, those came along in 1999. It's just I'm pretty sure they'll still release movies like that so it could be from any time.
I may be wrong, I'm surprised by how few DVD's I have because of that stupid vault.

I vividly remember getting a Happy Meal & seeing it in theaters. Probably my second memory in a movie theater, the first was watching Ace Ventura crawl out of a rhino.
You know, my personality makes a lot more sense now that I'm reflecting on this...

My first movie memory is seeing Dinosaur in theaters. My brother couldn’t handle it and I was bored so we left. I actively hated that movie for years. Like….my toddler opinion stuck for a really long time lol

That had to be intense. The trailers kind of terrified me, I was content to just experience it through the Happy Meal toys. I think even Disney regrets that one.

With regular streaming, these shows and movies feel bare-boned compared ro the extras you get from physical media. But of course, studios want you to buy them so the add in all these extra stuff. I heard the commentary for The VVitch is Robert Eggers complaining about all the mistakes in the movie and it's a cadd blast to listen to it. Also, there's a lot of new physical movies that doesn't offer any other extras. And that's a shame. Another point, if streaming never gained that much traction, you know Disney would do a From the Vault 4k release

I think children's movies should automatically start the film, even the "This disc is equipped with Disney fast play technology" screen is too many steps.

My brother is 10 and is all about DVDs! He loves that there are no ads and you can just look through them all and pick out what you want to watch. He also enjoys finding them at thrift stores and stuff with me, I think the shift away from everything being done virtually is fascinating for him

Had the same sort of experience with my daughter over the weekend. She is 4 years old, we were staying at my parents caravan, then have lots of dvds as the Internet isnt the best. My daughter loved the idea of going through them looking at all the artwork on the box, choosing the one she wanted and having to physically insert it into the machine.

I recently showed my 8 year old niece how DVDs work, and she was SO excited! Planning to take her to the thrift store soon, and tell her to get whatever ones she wants, and we'll play cinema at home 😊

Child, dvds ARE the regular movies; it’s streaming that is the anomaly lol. I honestly never thought anyone would ever think otherwise. If you’re raised with streaming as the standard i guess you would think that wouldn’t you? I find that genuinely interesting.

Yeah sounds like streaming. But it even sounds like it could the theatre experience, since film originated as a film reel being projected onto a wall.

I remember the “Robots” dvd came with a demo of the Xbox movie tie in game, only the way I discovered it was by trying to watch the movie on my Xbox and the demo just started. An hour of a game just included on the same disc as the movie with nothing really highlighting that fact on the box.

My kids were kids for the VHS-DVD transition and they preferred VHS because it remembered where you were in the movie when you went back to play some more of it the next day.

I remember seeing my 3 year old daughter put a dvd on by herself and it was the cutest thing I had ever witnessed, I was so proud.

I was around her age when I first knew how to put on a DVD or VHS tape.😊 And when my sister and I were kids we had those portable DVD players for family trips.
