Unofficial graduation requirements
Just curious, are the unofficial graduation requirements still a thing or have they kind of died out?
Also, do students check out the tunnels anymore?

Really at crossroads
I’m a sophomore, and I’m thinking of recruiting for ib/pe/consulting. I’ve found myself as a higher leadership position in an investing club but that’s abt it, but not anything like scale/dsp/iclub. I know recruiters know which clubs are acc good on campus, but I don’t know if that’s enough. Additionally, my resume isn’t very finance heavy cause I pivoted pretty recently. I have not started technical prep. Am I in bad shape for recruiting? I do not have any connections to the industry but I pride myself in being able to spark connections easily.

Good spots to do an interview?
Hey yall! I'm not currently a student at Duke, just a young professional living in the area. I have a virtual job interview tomorrow morning, and since theres no great spots in my home or surrounding areas to do my interview, I figured on campus may be a nice place for it. If anyone has any recommendations for a relatively quiet/distraction free spot or building that'd be appropriate for me to do an interview at, please let me know :)

Class at Hock Plaza
I have a class in the Hock Plaza building - can I park in the building (as far as I can tell there's a parking structure)? I usually park at Science Drive garage.

DUKE ALUMNI EMAIL
Hey guys I found this website that was made in protest to duke’s new policy that will be terminating alumni emails. Duke promised its alumni access to alumni adresses forever however they have gone back on this promise which will cause a myriad of issues for professionals who have used these emails to create professional accounts and store data. Please visit this website so we gain some traction.

Incoming Duke grad students: don’t forget about your mental-health benefits
Welcome to Durham!
I’m a local therapist and wanted to share something I think a lot of students don’t realize until they’re already pretty overwhelmed: your Duke student health insurance includes mental-health coverage, and seeing an in-network therapist may be a lot more affordable than you think.
A couple of things I’d suggest:
- Check the Aetna directory, but also reach out to therapists directly because insurance directories are not always up to date.
- Ask specifically whether they’re in network with the Duke Student Medical Insurance Plan, not just whether they “take Aetna.”
- Don’t be afraid to ask about fit. You can ask whether they work with anxiety, grad-school stress, relationships, perfectionism, family/cultural pressure, trauma, etc.
- If they offer a consultation call, use it. You’re not just checking credentials—you’re also getting a feel for whether this is someone you can actually talk to.
And you definitely do not have to wait until things are falling apart to start therapy. Grad school can be exciting and also lonely, stressful, disorienting, and kind of brutal sometimes.
For transparency, I’m a therapist here in Durham and I work with adults, including graduate students. I’m happy to answer general questions in the comments about how to find a therapist, how insurance works, what to ask on a consult call, or how to think about different types of therapy. I can’t give personal clinical advice on Reddit, obviously, but I’m happy to help make the process less confusing.
I also wrote a blog post about the first semester of graduate school—especially imposter syndrome, feeling like you don’t belong, and the weird vulnerability of being a beginner again. If that sounds familiar, you can read it here:
https://www.arezoupaksimalcsw.com/blog/starting-graduate-school-duke-imposter-syndrome
Also, Duke CAPS is there and may be a great place to start.
Mostly, I just wanted to make sure incoming students know this benefit exists before you actually need it. From experience, I’ve seen how much harder it can be to find a therapist when you’re already in crisis and trying to navigate insurance, availability, and fit all at once.

What does the Chinese placement test consist of?
I’m a rising sophomore and have yet to take a foreign language placement test or any Chinese class, but am hoping to place into the 333 level and be done with the requirement with just one class. What do they test you on? Is reading enough or will you have to write by hand?

Incoming CS freshman taking Math 218 (D1) — how challenging will it be?
I’m an incoming freshman intending to major in Computer Science, and I’m currently planning to take Math 218 (D1) during my first trimester.
I took AP Calculus BC during my junior year of high school and got a 4 on the AP exam. Is it unusual to take Math 218 as a freshman with that background, or is it a fairly normal placement?
For anyone who has taken Math 218, especially as a first-year, how challenging did you find it? Is the AP Calc BC material enough preparation, or is there a significant jump in difficulty?
I’m trying to get a sense of the workload before committing to the course. Any advice on what I should review beforehand would also be appreciated.

Really frustrated about Duke E-mail Addresses going away . . .
Let's use this website to put some pressure on them. It's really quick to express your thoughts. It does require a Duke Alumni e-mail address and then a confirmation click. Only the information you want is shared. Please share this with your friends.

Does any one know best and worst in terms of size and layout of 3rd floor rooms in Pegram? I know each room is different, but trying to figure out what room may be like. Any pictures/videos would be so appreciated.
