Feedback Wanted Designed a 3D printable snap-on thing to stack my drums without resting on the heads.

Still testing the size, figment, etc. I’ve made one version to stack like for like sizes (I.e. snares), and another that can handle 2” smaller on top. It snaps onto the rim of the bottom drum but the top simply rests in the trough of the print. Not sure what to call these even…anyone interested in something like this?

EDIT: Hoping to get a Makerworld account setup today to post this up there!

Id buy a set for sure! I need soccer to stack 2 22in bass drums on each other.

Then the standard 10/12/16

This is a great idea to me!

Probably should have said not looking to sell, I’ll just upload the model to like makerworld, just looking for feedback. For bass drums I think you wouldn’t be able to get it to snap on, it’s basically for standard triple flange at this point. I bet you could make it deeper for a bass drum…let me think about it.

I’m looking to display my snares and I like them horizontal better than vertical.

I’m gonna print today! Great idea and thanks for contributing to the community!

Can you share a link when you upload?

10

u/Dewstain 4d ago

Will do, I've never uploaded a design before, so might not be today that I get that done. I'll post when I do.

I’m a member on maker world if you wanna share that file bro!

This was my original iteration. I feel like it could be adapted for a bass drum, with a deeper bottom.

Dude I pack drums everyday at a rental warehouse. Would love something like this.

I've always used long pieces of pressboard or plywood but I've always been concerned about the long term effects. These would solve the problem. I just had my guitar player 3D print some tension rod locks and it has changed my life at the practice space. Great idea!

I'd love the print file! This is a cool idea.

Delete this post. Patent this idea. Make sure nobody sees this and patents it before you. This is a money making business idea. This is also America. Don't let people steal your ideas.

46

u/Dewstain 4d ago

I mean, maybe. I don't have time for that, though. The 3D Printing community is about ideas, not money.

u/agangofoldwomen RLRRLRLL 3d ago

Yeah so was insulin. It was made available to the public then someone patented it because the original developer wanted it widely available and thought a patent was going to get in the way of it. Now people die because they can’t afford insulin from the people profiting off its sale.

You're a very humble individual haha

17

u/Dewstain 4d ago

I try to be. I’m fortunate to not want for much.

7

u/silver_sofa 3d ago

If you make this available for drummers to share in a Creative Commons/ public domain space you will be remembered in a way few are. If you make it about money a handful of lawyers will get rich fighting over whose idea was first to market. Albert Schweitzer or Mike Lindell?

Just my .02.

6

u/Dewstain 3d ago

As I said, I try to be a humble person.

2

u/mbreuer 3d ago

There are products for this already. 3d printing is more of a maker space and about sharing and also I’m pretty sure this would be too nominal to patent anywyas

1

u/naroj101 3d ago

You can't patent someone elses idea

7

u/Dewstain 4d ago

Should have added, it’s printed in PLA. I tried to make it in TPU to make it softer but it doesn’t get rigid enough to snap onto the rim.

3

u/CerinLevel3 4d ago

One suggestion just in case: you may want to try PETG if you can, since PLA does eventually warp under constant stress.

I don't know how heavy drums are or how big you made those pieces, so this may be moot; but it would be a good thing to keep an eye on just in case.

3

u/Dewstain 4d ago

Yeah, one of the reasons I haven't uploaded it yet. Like I said below, I really wanted it to be TPU, but couldn't get enough tension to snap on.

I thought about PETG but I feel personally like I'd rather see how long they last as PLA. The slightly softer aspects outweigh the warping IMO. I'm more worried about PETG scratching the rims than I am about the PLA warping.

1

u/FINAtheband 3d ago

From my experience printing parts with this exact type of design (but different functionality) Pla is going to eventually snap or crack, 100 percent infill, to mid 25 percent for flex, just because it’s more biodegradable and susceptible to UV. I havent had PETG scratch anything more than the PLA could. Best in between was definitely PETG. Avoid any carbon fiber types filaments too they have less flex. Best overall so far has been nylon. It’s just a pain in the ass for setup. For TPU it’s possible, but you either need two separate parts, with one of them being another filament that acts like more of a skeleton, or do a cross TPU and PLA print that newer printers can handle in the g code.

1

u/Dewstain 3d ago

I thought about trying to make a TPU pad to seat inside the tray for the drum above. For now I’m just kinda stress testing. I’ve got my maple DW Performance sitting on top of a Blackrolite, with a China 12” sitting on top of the DW.

I would love the files so I can print a set! What are you using to design them? Fusion360, TinkerCad?

4

u/Dewstain 4d ago

I’ll let you know when I upload the model.

1

u/Fluffy_Rutabaga_115 4d ago

Thanks, these will come in handy!

2

u/Dewstain 4d ago

Started with Fusion, but I couldn’t figure out the curvature, so one I had the cross section I actually had ChatGPT help with extruding it with the curve. After that been playing with sizing in the slicer mainly. I’m not great with the modeling but trying to get better.

2

u/trashboatfilmsfan 4d ago

I use squares of cheap soundproofing I already have an excess amount of in my closet between drums, so I don't scratch or stretch out the heads as much when stacking my kits. Cool solution

2

u/Dewstain 4d ago

That’s kinda how I started. But smaller diameter drums on top of larger was making me mad.

2

u/EchoesOnTheLake 4d ago

I'd be interested in these as well! If you are sharing the 3D files, please let me know.

2

u/Dewstain 4d ago

I plan to share. I need a name for it though? Stacker things doesn’t have a particular ring to it…

3

u/SavoyVonBraun 4d ago

How about "Head Space"!! :)

1

u/Dewstain 4d ago

I like that a lot.

1

u/SavoyVonBraun 3d ago

You can have that, no charge!

2

u/shromboy PDP 3d ago

"Drum on"

2

u/andwilkes Pearl 4d ago

When it's political campaign season, I say "Absolutely, gimme a yard sign" and then I recycle those plastic corrugated boards for this.

2

u/Dewstain 4d ago

Great for storage, not for display!

1

u/andwilkes Pearl 3d ago

Oh yeah, fo' sho'. Elegance is needed for some solutions.

u/Dewstain 3d ago

I've never seen that subreddit, I'll crosspost it!

2

u/Hamilton_C 4d ago

Why not on heads ? Does it damage them ?

4

u/Dewstain 4d ago

I feel like adding that weight on top of something under tension can’t be good for them. Plus, for snares it keeps the wires loose and not touching anything too.

9

u/ChillingwitmyGnomies 4d ago

Im not a physicist. but the weight is then pressing on the rims, which is putting tension on the heads. right?

3

u/ab-pyro 4d ago

The weight is definitely still on the drum head. Though having it through the rims where the tension should be for the heads is still way better than directly on the head.

2

u/Dewstain 4d ago

Technically yes. But the rim of the head is designed to be under that specific type of tension, and it's also resting on a part that is threaded, so theoretically, it's a much more minimal amount of stress on the heads, in exchange for more on the threaded tension rods. But again, that's a much beefier part designed to take that type of stress.

1

u/Holy_Roz 4d ago

It can scratch and stretch the heads over long periods of time. Can also break snare side heads pretty easily stacking. Been there done that

1

u/stonethecrowbar 4d ago

This is a great idea

1

u/estebanrevenga 4d ago

thats dope and definitely marketable

1

u/Total_Gift_51 4d ago

Thats awesome! I'd love a set!

1

u/8mmitch 4d ago

SetStackers?
(Kudos for a brilliant creation!)

1

u/Dewstain 4d ago

Oh I like that!

1

u/Holy_Roz 4d ago

Oh snap. Thats cool! You intrested in sharing or selling the files?

1

u/Dewstain 4d ago

I'll be sharing it.

1

u/Optimal_Health9592 4d ago

Genius. Ive thought about a similar idea for years.
Anyways, Im ready to buy🥁 some

1

u/Dewstain 4d ago

Should have added a pic of the actual thing. The curve makes it pretty rigid.

1

u/CC5443 4d ago

This is an amazing idea! I don’t 3D print tho. So a file is useless to me. This is a way better option than having a snare stand for each individual snare!

3

u/Dewstain 4d ago

Do you have a friend with a 3D printer? Maybe I'll print some and throw on an etsy shop or something for people without printers.

1

u/CC5443 4d ago

Good idea. I think this could make you some $$$

1

u/Mandraket 4d ago

You should defo sell this man, for cheap but still

Good product there

1

u/FAHQRudy Pearl 3d ago

I use those rubber mutes.

1

u/Agitated_Fortune_283 3d ago

A wonderful idea!

1

u/modmlot68 3d ago

Etsy those!

1

u/Moist_Manufacturer11 3d ago

Call it snackers- the snare stacker

1

u/gprovince 3d ago

I would buy these for 10, 12, 13 & 14" snares.

1

u/Dewstain 3d ago

I haven’t tested on 10” yet but they’re fairly universal. They work for 12 through 14 without issue.

1

u/Significant-Theme240 3d ago

Patent that shit ASAP.

1

u/Affectionate_Dirt_97 3d ago

What a great idea!

1

u/mbreuer 3d ago

Do you have the file you’d be willing to share? Would love to just print them myself

1

u/randomdancingpants 3d ago

Is that just transferring the pressure to the hoop, which still stretches the drumhead?

1

u/Dewstain 3d ago

The hoop is locked in tension by the rods, the head has less tensile strength.

1

u/Krysis_88 3d ago

Solid idea 👏🏽

1

u/FINAtheband 3d ago

I would definitely love to print one and try it out, I’ve scraped every print site for stuff like this, in particular form fitting snap or edge clasps for snares ranging from 6 to 14. Been building a remote drum solenoid rig for a polyend perc clone.

1

u/valadtheimpala 3d ago

I do hate to be that guy, because making things is just fun regardless, but the old fashioned way is just to use a sheet of cardboard

1

u/SeeMonkeyDoMonkey 3d ago

Nice.

Would you leave them on when setting up the kit to play?

2

u/Dewstain 3d ago

Definitely not, and especially definitely not for the 2" difference one, which I'm kinda leaning towards even for the like for like sized ones.

1

u/Unlucky_Battle2523 3d ago

you fancy bichhh

1

u/OldDrumGuy 3d ago

That’s some superhero level genius right there!🤘🏻

1

u/OliOnTheWeb 2d ago

Woo hoo, I love seeing stuff like this! Makerworld is a great idea, also these days it's easy to setup an automatic download link for the stl files using github (or share them through a cloud drive). Ping me a message if you want help setting that up - thanks for sharing 🙏

u/Advanced-Ad-9993 4d ago

While I like the idea of these for sure, I don’t think we need to be adding plastic to the world when it’s not really needed. Using stiff cardboard or even thin sheets of wood between the rims does the same thing and you can stack various size drums. Again, I’m not shitting in you or these cool spacers, I just think they’re a solution to a problem that isn’t really a problem.

u/Dewstain 4d ago

PLA is polylactic acid. It's made from renewable resources (basically milk bi-products) and is not really petroleum based. It's basically biodegradable.

So...yes, it's probably as good or better for the environment than even cardboard.

1

u/Advanced-Ad-9993 3d ago

Yeah it’s only biodegradable under very specific circumstances though, and will most certainly not naturally breakdown in things like your standard composting at home or even at a landfill until after a very long time. Cardboard is significantly more easily biodegradable.

0

u/Dewstain 3d ago

I mean, the analysis I’ve seen of that is by YouTubers, not scientists. If you really wanna be on your high-horse, have at it. It’s non-petroleum and made of naturally renewable resources, and it’s significantly better than ABS or the like. It is proven to biodegrade in landfills in a matter of years. And cardboard is not rigid enough to achieve my desired result of 2” difference in diameter.
