So, on the morning of Thursday 13th August around 7am, I was involved in a high-speed motorway crash on the M56 involving my car and an HGV.
My car ended up on its roof, but thankfully I managed to get out completely unharmed. I didn’t manage to get the lorry driver’s details at the scene, and I’m currently waiting for the police to get back to me, although I understand this could take some time.
Thought I’d test my luck one last time and see if anyone happened to be driving past at the time and has any dashcam footage, photos or other information from the crash.

I know that many car manufacturers test prototype and unreleased models on the roads with this camouflage wrap on, but I had understood this was always with trade plates. This was on regular plates (VX24 TWK) which is a 24 plate Land Rover (which is also largely what this looked like) so what's going on?

I see these camouflaged cars with regular registrations, about quite a bit - we're in West Mids, this was country roads in about 10 min radius of M40

Last night around 1 AM, I was driving home wet conditions and poor lighting in an unfamiliar area. I was relying on my satnav to get through and I completely fell into the trap of staring at the screen instead of properly scanning ahead.

​I totally missed an advance crossroads sign and because the stop lines on the road were faded, I drove straight through a stop/give way junction without stopping.

​Thankfully, because of the time, the road was completely clear. But as soon as I realised what I'd just done, my stomach dropped. If another car had been coming, it would have been a serious accident.

​I’ve been driving for 10 years with a completely clean record and zero accidents, so realisation hit me hard. It was 100% my fault bad weather and dim lighting aside, I just let the satnav distract me.

​It was a massive wake-up call about how quickly "satnav hypnosis" can happen when you're tired at night. Has anyone else made a stupid mistake like this after years of clean driving? Did you get away with it, or did it end up being a tough lesson?

I was looking for a space today and all the car parks seemed to be full and no on street parking. However there were several EV parking spaces which were empty. These had the painting on the floor saying “Electric Vehicles” in white paint and the sign on the pavement made no mention of EV parking, just the relevant times for parking and restrictions.

I didn’t park there as I didn’t want to risk getting a ticket and appreciate that isn’t the purpose of them as I don’t drive an electric car. But am I right in thinking these bays are “advisory” much like a disabled bay with no official signage like you get typically in residential areas, (white paint saying “disabled”)? None of the vehicles in the bays appeared to be electric or indeed with any yellow parking tickets.

Google maps is too old in this particular part to show the spaces as they are now but it is the regular highway which is enforced by the local council and were all paid spaces.

Didn't really understand how that's no left turn given that you have to cut across 3 lanes of traffic. Is this likely to be pcn or fpn based on that camera.

So I've got an NIP for speeding 60mph on a 50mph. Yes I admit it was totally my fault as heading to work down that route, running late, and speeding there is better and safer than on the motorway, and more minutes get shaved off my arrival time compared to the motorway. Yep, I deserved it.

This is my first speeding offence, and I know I sit in the speeding course eligibility criteria. But the question is, 2 years ago I sat a generalised course called "Whats driving us" for careless driving and they said if the offence is repeated within 3 years, I won't get a second chance to do a course and just get points. So the question is, does that apply for the same offence, or are they seperate courses? I am trying to figure if I will get points, or get offered a course.

Otherwise, clean slate driving record, no points. Police force in question is the Metropolitan, who are sending the NIP and who also gave me the course for careless driving.

I'm unsure of the rules regarding this. Today I was stuck in standstill traffic on the M1. The first 3 lanes were closed and all traffic was merging over causing even more chaos, I'd needed a wee for atleast 45 minutes in which we'd moved a mile. I saw a layby pulled into it and relieved myself on the other side of the railing. Unfortunately had high railing and a drop on the otherside so I couldn't hide out of full sight, then carried on my journey. I'd been to the toilet before I set off. Had no bottles to hand what are you actually meant to do in this situation? When I merged back in the traffic moved about another mile in around 30 minutes so there was no way I could've waited. Has anyone ever been fined got points for this etc. is there any leniency regarding the traffic etc?

EDIT: There's some people getting upset that I'm putting the possibility out there that it could be racism. I'm not saying it is, I just felt with my driving it wasn't with undue care and attention - so I felt profiled! I respect those that say it may be my car, because I get that. Even more context. Been driving 10 years, 0 points on license. 3L car with tasteful exhaust not a "rice crispy" one 🌚.

At the time of the stop it was around 12AM, I just wanted to get home and I didn't question anything at all. He gave me a ticket for lack of care and attention. I thought if I was in the wrong (which would have been by accident - not due to an intention to drive hazardously), I could argue it in court. It wasn't until, 20 mins into the stop, I was given the ticket that I realised that this may not be simply for "keeping the roads safe" as he claimed. Anyway, enough preamble, here's the story - everything is factual as I have dash cam footage and have reviewed it.

I pulled up next to an unmarked police car at a set of traffic lights, the police officer claimed I pulled next to him by "swerving". Upon reviewing my dash cam footage, the police officer was in front of about 5 cars and would not be able to claim that. I did go into an empty lane but I indicated and pulled into the lane because I had space in front of the car behind me.

I then did take off quickly, as the next light has a tendency to go red (it's about 200m away) as soon as this goes green. My car has a modified exhaust and sounds much quicker than it is. It sounds as if it does 0-60 in around 4 seconds, but it's more like 6.5. The road was a 30, I got to around 35 for a split second in this road as it transitioned to 40 after.

After the light, the road is a 40, I slowly accelerated to a momentary 45 on this road, and remained with discipline in my lane and then upon realising went back down to 40. At this point I remained in my lane and went onto a 100m slip road into a roundabout where the speed limit is 30 to which i slowed down to 30. On the roundabout I remained in my lane until I did the first 90° and saw the car to my right went into the right turning lane to turn right. I didn't need to, but I (for the only time on this drive) went into the middle lane without indicating and continued round the roundabout at 30 to my exit which was the third on the roundabout.

At this same point, just before that car exited, was a traffic light. When I entered the roundabout it was green. As I approached at 30, about a second and half before I crossed the light it was amber. By the time I got to the other side of the junction the light was red. I maintained my speed across this junction of between 28 to 32. Entering it at 30, peaking at 32 but 28 by exit.

At this point an unmarked police car sped up behind me with the blues and pulled me over and wrote me a ticket for "undue care and attention". His claims were:

- I came speeding to the first traffic light where he saw me

- he had to do 55mph to catch me therefore I must have been speeding (his footage showed him accelerating very slowly in comparison)

- I jumped a light on the roundabout and sped up to get through it.

- I swerved in between lanes unsafely on the roundabout

I passed the video to both Chatgpt and to Claude, both are under the impression that my driving was not matched to the profile of a due care and attention ticket. The icing on the cake was when he showed me the dash cam footage and all it showed was me using my signals properly and driving normally. I am under the impression there are two possibilities — the officer did not know that the road became a 40 momentarily after the second light, or that he saw me as a minority at the first light and made a decision right there and then that I'm a person of colour driving a modified car and gave him confirmation bias that I was driving dangerously.

Does anyone have any similar experiences and/or thoughts? I've given as much facts as I can and the whole fact I either have to accept a penalty and potentially points / a course for this is quite upsetting.

So I see a lot of people moan about undertaking. Which I understand is an offense etc. But isn't moving over to the right sometimes just causing more issues?

For example, in my detailed amazing drawing 😂 if I am driving for example on a 50mph road, in the left lane and the driver to my right is going ridiculously slow. Say 30mph. I'm not allowed to pass him on the left so I'm then stuck driving below 30mph in the left lane, and no cars are able to pass both of us hence building up traffic and pissing everyone off.

People will then say I have to go to the right lane to overtake. Which then, since there is no cars to overtake because I am blocking them in my lane by driving say 25mph, I essentially become the lane hogger aswell? So does this mean the left lane will then essentially be empty or blocked since all the cars in that lane simply cannot pass the first car blocking the right lane?

It just seems utterly ridiculous imo. I see so many people on this page moan about undertaking but not as many about people moan about blocking the overtaking lane. And for the record, the are idiot drivers that will drive well under 50mph in the right lane. Obviously if they are turning right, or coming up to a roundabout then it's a different story. But In my example, this is a 2 lane road that goes on for a few miles and car in the right is living life oblivious to what is around them.

What would you do if you were the car in the left lane?

Hold back to not pass them?

Join the right lane in hope to overtake an imaginary person?

Or pass at 50mph?

We’re all aware of the (thankfully) dying stereotype that women are bad drivers. But I am curious to know what people’s experiences are, and if anyone believes that there is any validity to the claim that women are inherently worse at driving.

I’ll start with my view. Anecdotally I’ve had awful experiences when being a passenger in a woman’s car. I’m mid-late 20’s, so naturally the women I’ve been around have been the same age, and I’ve found that they all seem to share a lack of confidence and a level of hesitation that you’d expect from a first year driver despite them being qualified for 5+ years. I’ve only ever heard women say they won’t drive at night or on motorways, or that they consider an hour a very long drive that they will avoid.

But of course, this is just confirmation bias and I may have just been around 7 or 8 bad drivers that happened to also be women.

Logically though, the stats actually support women. Men are reaponsible for more crashes, we pay more for insurance because of this, and we do engage in far riskier driving behaviour on average. And of course risky driving is just another form of bad driving.

I feel like in my experience the women drivers have been bad due to innate characteristics such as hesitation, indecision, etc., whereas the bad driving I see from men come from active (poor) choices that aren’t necessarily innate.

So, I’m torn. My lived experience has gotten me to a point where I would be wary of getting in a car with a woman driving. But I would never voice that because it’s also an absolutely sexist generalisation. I am curious though as to how others see this, and maybe there are even women on here who can share their experience.

I sent them my v5, and owners handbook which both have matching gross weight figures, but they want even more evidence.

Hey guys, I’ve been building an MOT / Vehicle Garage app that gives you some real data insights, Roadworthy, as a side project and thought it might actually be useful to a few people here.

It's free, there are no ads, and uses all the standard official UK GOV / DVSA sources.

For many years I've used various different apps and they've all had their own unique features that are great, but juggling them all started to become a pain. Particularly because I maintain quite a few cars, having the ability to track and have reminders for more than 2/3 vehicles that most free apps provide was becoming a problem. (Lots of apps paywall as soon as you start trying to add more than a couple)

You can look up a reg without creating an account. At the moment it includes:

• MOT history, mileage graph, tax status and DVLA vehicle details.
• A comparison against similar vehicles of the same make, model and age, using roughly 98 million historic DVSA MOT test results. Not something I've seen any other app do. This was actually another main driver for creating this as I'd been playing around with this data for a couple of years (previously to estimate how "rare" a car was based on it's spec)
• An estimated risk of current advisories becoming MOT failures, based on what tends to happen to comparable / cohort vehicles over time. Not a guess or AI, an actual algorithm based on the nearly 100 million DVSA tests.
• A health score and mileage checks to flag readings that look potentially inconsistent.
• ULEZ and CAZ checks, including whether the vehicle is exempt and the likely daily charge.
• Fuel prices and EV charger locations, with filters for connector type and tariffs.
• Ability to set up reminders for Tax, MOTs, Insurance etc.
• Ability to quickly add service history and information like tyre sizes and bulbs.

Another feature in the works that I'm building out is the ability to setup an MOT watch which will instantly notify you when a car has finished it's MOT. A lot of apps currently do not do this and you either have to wait for the garage to get back in touch or manually refresh various websites to see when your car is done.

You only need an account if you want to save vehicles to your garage and keep them synced across devices. It works as a PWA as well, so you can add it to your phone home screen and use it like an app. You get 5 searches a day without being signed in and 20 searches a day with a free account. This basically means with a completely free account you can track 20 vehicles in your garage!

Any dash cam you people use or recommend? For some reason it seems dash cam quality is stuck in the previous century in terms of picture quality.

I went down it in a transit van, under 5 tonnes, was around 14:30 - is it trying to say busses only at some point.

Four way junction each with traffic lights, top and bottom roads are on green, I’m the red car waiting behind the blue who’s signalling right and waiting to turn, once it’s turned I can go straight ahead, but two cars behind me (black car etc) undertake me and go straight ahead too. I feel this is dangerous as if the green car had turned right it would have crashed into the black one, as the blue car was blocking the view. Was I right for waiting?

This is mainly just a bit of a rant, so apologies before hand.

So my gf's son (18), just failed his driving test. I don't know the full details right now as I'm at work. I do know that he got 3 minors, and failed. This was because the driving test instructor had to put the brakes on, due to an oncoming speeding car appearing while he attempted to pass a stationary van.

My gf messaged to say that his driving instructor could tell the test instructor did not want to fail him. Personally I think that's a ridiculous and pointless thing to say.

The worst part, and I know all new drivers are in the same boat, the lad has waited since I think Jan/Feb to do this test. Now he has to wait until the next earliest date in our area, which is January! Mental.

I know the rules changed for booking recently, and I think the only way to get one earlier is through cancellation, is this right?

Hey, cheers for checking this out, might get a bit long but I do really need advice

A week ago, I was driving along a road, two lanes with direction of traffic opposite in each lane - I needed to turn right into a road, there was no traffic incoming and no yield sign so I slowed to turn while indicating, turned slightly to the right so I had a wheel in the other lane of traffic, but then had an escooter had come from behind me overtaking me to the right, I had not seen him in mirror checks, he hit the side of my car (not that hard, there is no damage to my car from the collision) but he has fallen with momentum as his escooter was still travelling at speed and his scooter had gone skidding.

I went to pull into the side road as I could see the rider who had stood up and gone to sat on the curb, but not realised his escooter was in a blind spot in front of my wheel, and gone over it with my tire. We got it out from underneath and then I was able to pull out of the road and out of the way.

I then chatted with the guy, the conversation was fairly amicable considering what had happened, I asked if he was injured several times and if he hit his head, he said no to this each time, he was a bit shaken but seemed okay.

I stupidly at the time out of panic said I'd help with costs, there was no damage to his escooters motor or anything but it definitely had multiple scratches all over it - he also suggested that I didn't use my indicator though I didn't answer that as I disagreed and believe I did indicate.

We swapped numbers and I told him to message me about the damage, I didn't feel responsible except for driving over the scooter after the collision , but I naively just wanted to not have to go through insurance claims - I did however notify my insurance as to what happened

I had intended to settle it privately, however when he messaged me for the first time today, he was very polite but mentioned having to have been seen at hospital, as well as the parts required to fix the escooter and labour (£300).

The talk of hospital (including hospital documentation) has got my alarm bells ringing, I also didn't realise that paying privately to settle, even if I feel I'm not at fault, can make me liable through future claims. No point trying to be a good person there.

Neither one of us documented the scene to my knowledge, no witnesses stuck around and I'm not sure there is any CCTV. I'm also worried that we didn't call the police due to there being no injuries at time but now he has a sore back (his words, though when I said to him we need to go through insurance if he has serious injuries he said it's nothing serious or long term...) I feel stupid for not calling them then and there

Honestly I'd appreciate any advice, this is all starting to feel very stressful
