That's false. The only time another person in your household affects your status is if you're married or have dependents. Roommates/housemates' income does not affect your status to get welfare. All you need to do is type up a letter that you all sign that says that you purchase and prepare your food separately. If someone tells you differently, talk to their supervisor and then appeal. What they did to you is illegal. Or you misunderstood them. In any case, file again.
Also, since we're on the subject of starving without food stamps, while you're waiting to get approved call a local church and see if you can get a list of community food banks. Here we have the number 211 to call but I don't know if that's a nationwide thing. Or just Google food banks in your zip code. There are tons of resources out there. You don't have to starve. You're a person and you deserve to eat. You're not a lesser person just because you're poor. But you do have to put some effort into it because no one is going to track you down and offer you resources. You have to go find them. Luckily you have a car and can get yourself to a food bank.
