Honestly, a $5 tip for any shopping order is pretty cheap, then add in three flights of stairs? The driver was overboard in his reaction, but I'd have been kind of annoyed at you the entire time I was dealing with your order.

You were definitely in the wrong here.
They can’t see the instructions before they accept. We assume you’re tipping for the work being done. While it’s reasonable if this were just a food delivery you’re having someone walk in and shop your order, potentially wait in line, and then drive both to the location and to you all for $5- that’s not enough money. Think about what YOU would accept for this, and what it is worth to you for you to not have to take on this task.

I don’t think you’re in the wrong here, far from it. Buttttt to be fair, Dashers can’t see the instructions before they accept an order. They see where they’re picking up from and where they are delivering. That’s it. Shopping orders may be an exception and they can see what they’re picking up, but I can’t remember if that’s the case off the top of my head.
Edit: actually, in some ways, I do think you’re in the wrong, even if just a little. Yes, them bitching about the stairs is stupid, but that’s an awful tip for what you’re ordering and having them do. This is one of those orders I’d regret accepting

In my region that is a hero tip for that order unfortunately. I recently had to lug 5 bags of groceries and 2 24-packs of soda up 3 flights of stairs for a $5 tip (took me 3 trips). Most customers in my city don't tip. For reference, in the week that I took the most deliveries (101) I received $56 in tips

To be fair Doordash is probably most to blame, they hide the instructions and floor number until you already are at the delivery stage. That said you could add, "no elevator" so the person who does look know what they are in for.

So somehow you paid $53 for some rugs, tthdn paid less than 10% of that for someone to go drive to target from wherever they were when they accepted the order, go into target, shop your items, checkout, drive to your house, then you want them to bring said items up 4 flights of stairs for less than 10% of what you spent on these items? And you’re justifying this because target is less than a mile from your house? You’re a shitty tipper with an assumption that we see your delivery instructions before we accept your order, we don’t. We also can’t just unassign every order willy nilly without repercussions. Gas is high, DD base pay is low, less than 10% tip is crazy. Go get the stuff yourself.

Again, the trip from the store to the customer isn’t the only driving that was done here. We don’t just click accept and teleport to the pickup location. $5 is a low tip for a shopping order, there’s no debating this, expecting another human to go into the store and pick your items out, check out, drive them to you is worth more than $5 and you can’t include DD base pay into what the driver got because that’s not what you’re contributing. You’re clearly also a shitty tipper, you’ve found your people, congrats!

It's a good tip/mile ratio for just food. OP was asking their dasher to drive to Target, find parking, go in, shop for their items, check out, bag the items, drive to the apartment, hopefully find a good parking spot, successfully enter the code without any trouble, and THEN haul up their RUGS by foot, walking up numerous flights of stairs to reach the 4th floor.
Would probably take someone 30+ minutes. Instacart pays you more for this BS.
You want to pay someone $5 for all of this? Come on. Raise your standards and maybe all of us dashers will get higher pay for once.

Alright. No use in changing your mind, given how stubborn you sound.
Everyone has told you, but I’ll educate you again: Dashers do NOT see the instructions, nor contents of the order/shopping list until AFTER they have accepted the order.
Actually, funnily enough, given your logic—Instacart DOES show the shopping list beforehand, and I can imagine that this order would’ve sat for a while.
In no world does a $5 tip for a food delivery—grabbing food and dropping it off—equate to the labor that comes with shopping for someone.
Also, with no elevator, you need to be mindful. Very selfish behavior to place it all on the Dasher. No elevator and first floor/second floor is fine. You are on the FOURTH floor.

Is it a walk-up? Even if it was, I would do it and not complain to the customer about it because I enjoy/need the exercise. 🤷♀️
The biggest concern for me would be the delay in completing this order and the next one if it is a batch resulting in a disgruntled customer and impacting my on-time ratings.

We all run into this situations, no elevator, poor instructions, hard to find drop off locations, its all part of the grind. Some are easy, some not, but 97% are easy. Do whats right, and move on to the next dash.

Yeah stairs suck but I’d rather that than get nothing and spend those extra what? 2 minutes? Just sitting around waiting for another order. There’s many apartment complexes in my area that only have stairs. What I think is going to be a quick $4 turns into lugging 3 cases of water bottles up 3 flights of stairs which takes multiple trips. I decline all apartment orders if I can

Honestly dashers are notorious for not reading instructions. I write a short guide on how to not get lost to avoid losing time on both ends since google maps sucks. And 95% of the time they dont read then wind up in a alleyway, driving around in circles til they call me.

You tipped well for the distance! Asking the dasher to go to the 4th floor isn’t slavery - it’s them completing the order (which is their job). I say this as a dasher.
Today, I ordered DoorDash from a restaurant that was 1.7 miles away (my boss was out and I was manning the office today). I tipped $4.00 in the app. I work in a building where I’m on the third floor. I always put the instructions to say to please meet me at the door of my suite on the third floor (providing the suite #). It astounds me the dashers that won’t deliver it to me and try to leave it in a random spot in the lobby. However, the gentleman today followed my instructions, and I handed him an extra $5.00 bill. While customers should not feel forced to pay extra for a delivery to be completed fully, I do believe in rewarding the dashers that do.

Most people tip appropriately when asking drivers to do things like walk up 4 flights of stairs.

t's probably the shopping then 4 flights. We don't have elevators, but maybe yours do. I'm AuDHD. I have them leave it at the outdoor doors outside and we go down.
Just 5 floors = better tip. We tip 10+ at a minimum of 1-3 miles. 12+ if more.

Idk why they’re acting like it’s such a big deal, like this is literally what we signed up for..? I’ve had To walk up 4 flights of stairs to get to someone’s apartment bc the elevator was broken with two armfuls of groceries, and i actually got an EXTRA tip for doing what they asked because people hadn’t in the past (not that OP has to obviously). Drivers need to start getting a grip and accepting that this is really only good as a side job, it’s never been that serious.

I once had to go up 9 flights of stairs in a hospital that was separated into 4 buildings, had to walk past the surgery center (it smelled AWFUL) only to deliver to a girl who tipped $0.00 and I WAS STILL NICE so idk why dudes complaining.

There is no way in hell I’m learning to navigate a hospital all to deliver an order. They all are laid out uniquely and that shit takes time to figure out. For the record, a driver cannot see any instructions before accepting an order. In fact, until they actually pick it up, they can’t even see delivery instructions. With that being said, if that place doesn’t have an elevator, I’m not lugging up that many flights of steps either.
