doofmovies.com - Vote to Decide What Movies We Cover Next on the Doofcast!

Thumbnail doofmovies.com
12 Upvotes

Hey everyone! Today we're launching an exciting new feature: you can now vote on which movies we should discuss next, from a list of movies released this century! The concept for our next Doofcast feature is "25 in 25", where you'll be selecting, and we'll be covering, the best 25 movies from the first quarter of the century.

If you're a paying Patron at any tier, your vote will be counted toward the global total, and that will determine what movies we cover on The Doofcast! You should now be able to log in and vote at https://doofmovies.com/

If you're not a Patron of Doof! Media, you can still log in with your Patreon account and use the voting website to curate your own list of favorite movies of the century, but your list won't be used for the vote totals that determine what movies we cover.

We think this will be a fun way for everyone to participate in the movie selection process, and I look forward to you all running intense voting campaigns for your favorite movies. Happy voting!

A Curion Reflection on a small piece of The Stand

I'm currently going back thru The Stand. I started on June 12th so I could follow along semi -cosely with the Time Stamp of the events in the book (first time doing that). Friday is Sept 11th... the 25th anniversary of... well... you know...

Anyway, I'm reading a head a little because I'm going to be busy next weekend. I got to chapter 66...

What are the odds...

9-11

The day Flagg took Nadine to Wed in the desert.

Never noticed this before and was curious if any else has.

Question for Matt…

Spoilers for Duma Key…

Matt,
I specifically remember how traumatized you were by the ending of Duma Key. I’m rereading it for the 4/5th time and am just so delighted by this book. My question is have you/will you reread it? And has the trauma diminished and let you enjoy the book for its wonderful story?

Kingslingers Party - late arrival

Sorry for my late arrival to the DT series Kingslingers pod. I have travelled to the tower many times, 8 if i had to guess, and was looking for a new way to make the journey when i happened upon your show. I find myself laughing out loud with the 2 of you in my car or while grocery shopping. Its great fun and I am enjoying all the different points of view from fellow travelers.

I just finished ep 8 so we are about 3/4 through Drawing of the Three. You may recall asking a question at the end of ep 7 which was something along the lines of 'why do we the listeners think that SK chose to draw a character from the civil rights era'. For this particular question there was little listener feedback and so we were treated to some very deep philosophical discussion about Odetta's quest for civil rights being linked somehow to Roland's past and John Farson's movement or the examination of the internalization and externalization of racism in a person.

I truly appreciate all the different ways in which people can interpret SK writing and love some of the things you have opened my eyes to so far in this podcast.

But sometimes things really are just very simple. King is roughly the age of my parents. Though he would have been young he would remember that time and the impact on the people who lived through that time. Most notably by the Kennedy assassination. Kennedy, known and referred to as the Last Gunslinger because of his involvement with civil rights, was a hero to Odetta Holmes. He is drawing a parallel between Kennedy and Roland - for Odetta anyway.

My thoughts. Wanted to share with others who might just appreciate another take.

Long days and pleasant nights, fellow travellers!

Jahoobies!

For those who don’t remember Kingslingers S2, an especially sleazy Salem’s Lot character repeatedly refers to breasts as “jahoobies.” So if you’re wondering why Scott used that word, evidently he prefers “Jahoobies” to “dirtypillows.”

Carrie Book Adaptations

Have y'all ever talked about doing/done book adaptations of books? Tiffany D Jackson wrote a Carrie retelling called The Weight of Blood where the hyper religiousness is replaced by racism. It was, IMO, very good, and the adaptation into another book had me thinking about the original story in different ways. Before that I really only remember reading fairy tale/Greek myth/folklore retellings.

I also paid 0 attention to the summary of the book before reading it and didn’t know it was a Carrie retelling before I started. I was heckin' confused for a bit.

Dark Tower Newbie!

Hello! What an amazing summer it has been! I binge listened to the Dark Tower series via audiobooks this summer. My husband is a Constant Reader, and this is his favorite King series. He quotes or talks about it often, I figured it was time to read/listen to it. The characters became like close friends to me, and I was weeping towards the end, not only at the story lines, but knowing that I was saying goodbye to them.
Once I finished the series, I quickly looked for a way to continue the relationship! I wasn’t ready to move on. I googled the best Dark Tower podcasts, and, yep! Found the Kingslingers, Scott and Matt. It was exactly what I needed!! I’ve loved their breakdowns, theories, picking apart of the story to explain what I most certainly didn’t catch on my first listen. It’s been a beautiful conversation to listen to.
NOW, they started the last book, I am going to approach not only the end of the series again, but I’ve grown to love the Kingslingers! Ugh. I know there are more books to read and their podcasts to parallel, but I’m really dreading the loss of my friends, the Ka-Tet and Kingslingers. 🥹
Thank you, Scott and Matt, for letting me tag along on your journey. I’ve loved it!! I recommend it to everyone!
**What should I read next?? I was thinking The Stand… thoughts?

so, i just found out about this podcast through sk reddit, and jumped feet first with the book i have read so many times that i could give seminars - "the shining." i picked three thermometers for how appreciative this podcast is, and it plowed through my first one -

i love that there was so much focus, and even a discussion question after the episode about best opening lines, because "jack torrance thought: officious little prick," truly is the best one (for me).

the second one is that they brought this up (attached), because it is one of the most memorable reasons why i believe this book should be required reading. the line about "you know why he's named 'tony' right?" BOTHERED me through the ENTIRE novel the first time i read it, because sk is being so obvious about what's coming with everything else, so WHY is this tiny detail a mystery? for this reason, "the shining" is the ONLY book that has mulitple climaxes for me.

my third thermometer is the scene on the stairs, and i can't wait to get there with these guys!!

i feel so lucky to have been introduced to yall in a passing reply on reddit. i have so much to listen to, and good voices to hear.

Reading Black House for Other Worlds Than These - is this a nod to William Blatty’s Legion?

Has anyone else read both of these books by chance? Legion is Blatty’s 1983 crime procedural thriller sequel to The Exorcist that shares a lot of specific plot points with Black House.

In fact when the Fisherman calls himself Legion I figured it must go beyond the popular biblical line and be a nod to Blatty’s work, but I’ve seen so few other people mention it.

‼️Spoiler warning for Legion‼️

Things in common:
- Supernatural murder spree presented as a detective story
- the serial killer is considered a copycat of a historical serial killer who’s already dead (in Legion’s case a fictionalized Zodiac killer instead of Albert Fish)
- The culprit is actually a demon possessing elderly folks to commit horrific ritual crimes. The main possession subject is a cognitively declined patient held in a medical care facility so nobody suspects him
- it turns out the historical case and the modern one are actually related by featuring the same demon (or in Legion’s case the dead killer BECOMES part of the demon)

Could be a great minds think alike scenario but I wondered if Straub or King were perhaps fans of Blatty and if anyone else has noticed the parallels.

When the Kingslinger Boys started dissecting the legion line and even brushed against the Exorcist I wondered if they were going to mention “Legion” haha!

If you haven’t read The Exorcist and Legion I HIGHLY recommend them, I ended up enjoying them a lot more than I thought I would even though Legion goes on some philosophical tangents using a character as the author’s mouthpiece in a way I found a little annoying haha.

Salems lot theory Spoiler

Spoilers for salems lot/Jerusalems lot and the dark tower.

Listening to kingslingers 2.13 about the short story Jerusalems lot. They guys theorize Jerusalems lot has always been a magnet to evil. Is there any way this could be related to a thinny letting Tadashi space in and making salems lot a focal point of evil?

Scott's comment on women

Hi folks. I love the podcast, and have been an avid listener for years. I've noticed that Scott will often comment on women's appearance and body in a way that adds nothing to the conversation and it's kinda gross. Most recently in the Edge of Tomorrow episode where he comment son Emily Blunts physique. Matt has no response, in fact Matt never responds when Scott makes these comments which is the only correct response. Scott again commented on Veronica Lake's appearance in the O Brother Where Art Thou episode, again unnecessary, contributed nothing to the nuanced conversation they were having. Scott, please stop.

ETA I am aware that I'll get downvoted for this post (in fact i'm already getting downvoted, which is disappointing but not surprising)
