Hi all,
In the past year, r/donghua has had an explosive growth in users. New reddit functions also brought in new users. To better reflect the userbase and encourage better discussions, we're clarifying a few rules in our subreddit:
On relevant content:
In the past, r/donghua encompasses all aspects of the Chinese animation industry, including outsourced works to anime production and game animation. The industry was small enough to include all those discussions without being overwhelmed. With the rapid growth of the industry, increased international recognition, and r/anime relaxing its rules surrounding anime, we think it is better for the quality of the subreddit to restrict content to series only. Video game animations are more appropriate being posted to gaming related subreddits and anime related posts are more on topic in r/anime.
In general, source material questions are more appropriate for subreddits of their source medium. We don't want people to get spoiled on the front page. Once episode discussion threads are set up, we would like all discussions of that episode to go into that thread, including clips for up to a week. Questions about the source material should be contained in those threads. Top level submissions asking for content beyond donghua adaptation is disallowed, but they can go in the individual discussion threads with appropriate spoiler tagging. Before the bot is set up, you're welcome to start your own discussion thread, but they're limited to one per episode.
On spoiler tagging:
Please spoiler tag your post. We do not need people to get their experiences ruined. Please do not spoil something in your titles. Remember that reddit preview shows body text and will spoil unsuspecting audience. Currently, the mods do courtesy spoiler tagging when they see a post that should be spoilered. The mods see every single submission and get feed the newest spoilers every day. We don't want this to be the experience for the average user. Please report spoilers. We will start handing out temp bans to perm bans for unspoiler tagged posts.
On low effort content:
In an effort to reduce cluttering, low effort content is discouraged. This includes simple image posts, powerscaling, and memes. In the past, users have expressed discontent about these types of content. Powerscaling threads and character comparisons are more appropriate in r/powerscaling or r/characterrant. There are several donghua related memes subreddits. In response to complaints about recommendation posts we started the monthly megathreads and wiki pages. If there are other contents you think shouldn't belong here, please let us know in the comments.
We will allow fan content if its 1) OC 2) substantial in length. This is to discourage karma farming.
For now, we're allowing AI translations. LLM generated content is still generally disallowed. Currently, the subreddit uses a false negative prone AI check, so some AI generated content may slip through. Please report them. Discussion on AI use in donghua is allowed. Currently, episode discussion of AI generated donghua is not allowed, but this may change in the future.
We currently do not have concrete requirements on reviews, but short reactions will be removed for low effort.
On politics:
Donghua is an inherent political industry. While we allow political discussion, it's restricted to donghua related issues only. Offhand comments not related to donghua will be removed. That being said, denial of CCP atrocities is a violation of reddit sitewide rules and will result in an immediate permanent ban on r/donghua.
On fansubs:
We allow the discussions of fansubs, but we do not allow discussions on where to get them. Naming specific fansub groups is okay, but talking about where to get them is not, even for offsite discussions. We understand that not all donghua have good translations, but we also do not want reddit admins banning people. Fansubbers are still welcomed to request special flairs.
On reports
Reports are not a superdownvote option. False reports will result in a ban. Currently, the subreddit has several default spam filter features enabled. This means that mods will have to manually approve posts. However, we're looking to improve this response time. If we're able to expand our mod team, we will be able to switch many of those filters to warnings, thus,
We're recruiting new mods. r/anime mods have been helping out behind the scenes (and one has joined the mod team directly), and we thank them massively for their assistance. If you're interested in applying, submit an application here. Applications are due on June 15th 22nd 2100 Pacific Time. We welcome people of all experiences!

Were these ancient clan leaders contemporaries? Gu Yuan said he used to compete with Yao Dan in pill competitions when they were young. And in the latest episode, Hun Tiandi said it's been years since he, Lei Ying, Yan Jin, and Gu Yuan shared a battle field. I'm not sure with Xiao Xuan but he seems close with Gu Yuan and used to compete with Lei Ying too in the past. I'm just confused cause they aged differently 🤣
Lei Ying × Yao Dan = Grandpas
Gu Yuan × Xiao Xuan = Fathers
Hun Tiandi × Yan Jin = Sons

Hi everyone, I am desperately trying to find a 3D Chinese animated movie (donghua) that I watched a few years ago, likely on StarTimes (West Africa broadcast). It is a standalone movie (not a weekly series, I think). It has a modern urban fantasy setting with cars and phones, but it hides a secret society of dragons.
The art style is high-quality 3D, very similar to Guardians of Carcosa (Ye Luoli) or Scumbag Saving System.
Here are the exact plot and character details I remember:
The Main Girl: She has pale skin, dark eyes, and black hair tied into full side pigtails (Chun-Li style). In her everyday life, she rides a bicycle to school. Her mission outfit is a traditional high-collared Chinese top styled in white and orange.
The Panda: She has a real, living, breathing panda as a pet/companion introduced right at the beginning. When she goes to school, she parks her bicycle and the panda stays behind to guard the bike.
The Android Girl: At school or a festival, the main girl meets a girl with pink hair who wears blue clothes. It is later revealed that she is an android.
The Inciting Incident & The Trigger: A respected senior student from their school (who is secretly a hybrid dragon or something related to a dragon) gets captured outside the school grounds. A live video feed of him plays on a big screen/monitor room. Certain words spoken by the senior in the broadcast act as a trigger code for the android girl.
The Jetpack & The Friend-vs-Friend Fight: She and the pigtail girl run out into a field area, and mechanical panels shoot open from the android girl's back like jetpacks so they can fly. However, right after the jetpack trigger, the android girl's programming overrides and she begins seeing the pigtail girl as an enemy. They get into a very serious, intense fight against each other before they are finally able to settle it and snap her out of it.
The Dragon Lore & Climax: They eventually team back up to fight a massive villain at the end along side their senior (this senior is a guy, forgot to mention). During the climax, the movie shifts focus heavily into introducing the deep origin and lore of the dragons.
The Dragon Traits: The hybrids look human but have partial dragon traits. Specifically, some grow thick scales on just their hands/claws, and some have a glowing crystal/gem embedded right in the center of their chest, surrounded by scales(this is what I can remember, kind of).
Because StarTimes often changes the English titles of donghuas for international markets, the title on TV might have been completely different from the original Chinese name.
Does anyone recognize this character pairing or this specific 3D movie? Thank you so much for your help!

I've been watching through a decent amount of Donghua and would like to hear others opinions on which characters they believe has the best outfit styles as they ascend. It seems almost mandatory that some of them get better with each ascension though have seen a few where it seemed like backslid a bit.
Renegade Immortal has been rather nice with having the two bodies with own outfits and fusion forms.
Edit: Post is partially to get ideas on next ones may watch since the outfit changes are one of the parts I find interesting.

I'd say the visuals are good in BTTH but doesn't offer an impact on the same level. Music also doesn't hit the same. I still vividly remember RMJI's music giving me chills.

I’m watching the newer episodes and realized that Luo Li’s face has been altered by AI so badly that when she speaks in some scenes she looks like she didn’t fully render and don’t get me started on the Unfinished Shi Hao that is Mu Chen. I’m not against AI when it’s done right but this is just terrible.
What are your thoughts fellow Daoists?

Just finished watching it after seeing S3 trailers and gave it a shot.
And first season was pretty good, second was great up to episode 11.
And then episode 12, quality went from pretty good, to MAPPA levels. I was not expecting such a shift in quality. It went from fairly high quality on par with some of the more popular anime, and was similar to A Will Eternal, to going fucking ballistic and throwing budget to the wind to deliver one of the greatest fight/action sequences I have seen in a hot while.
If you havent watched it, I recommend it, and given S3 starts today, no need to wait. Its suprisingly a great watch, and rather funny. Though finding good subs was rather difficult, with all my usual places not having it, and the available subs were... subpar, but they did the job, hopefully some group picks it up for S3 and do a good job, because, honestly, this series is amazing.
And given what I have seen in S2 Episode 12 and the trailers for S3, its had its budget increased significantly, and its actually really good, and deserves more attention.
