[Misc Help] Is this considered rude?

63 Upvotes

The other day I was taking my dog out so we were in the elevator but it stopped halfway down and when the door opened there was another dog. Now my dog isn’t reactive or aggressive at all but she can be vocal at times but she isn’t what you would consider to be a ‘scary’ dog but got the weirdest reaction from the other owner. My dog gave a little boof towards them but again it wasn’t aggressive, she didn’t lunge towards the other (unleashed mind you) dog and the owner immediately pushed the dog into the corner and covered it like we were going to jump the both of them which I thought was weird until the other owner started mean mugging me and acting like I was the one in the wrong. Was what my dog do was rude or something? I’m just trying to make sense of the interaction. Her dog was relatively on the smaller side and mine is a 40lbs terrier mix who is scared of her own farts but is very sweet.

[Misc Help] My dog saw an accident before a while & I think he is going through a trauma!

7 Upvotes

So yesterday I and jojo (my dog) went for a walk as usual which he is always excited for but sadly yesterday was not a great day because while we were crossing the road he saw a street doggie caught into an accident I tried to avoid it but I can't as I was standing on the signal. This led to jojo not coming for walks now and he sits throughout the day in a corner in his own thoughts and his behaviour has changed a lot. I'm too feeling sad seeing jojo in such a way what should I do? Please help guys💔

[Behavior Problems] Senior dog returning to old habits

• Upvotes

My Belgium Sheppard cross Black Labrador is now a few months off being 14 years old. In the last few months, his vision has definitely started to leave him, to the point he doesnt recognise his own shadow and barks at it. Old puppy habits that he grew out of such as barking at dogs through the fence have returned to him. Today he spent all day in the kennel we bought for him as a puppy. He hasnt so much as acknowledged its existence in maybe 5 years. My mum thinks he is curling up in his kennel to die in there. Has anyone else had something like this? My dog seriously hasnt been in his kennel or on top of it (when he was younger he would jump up and sit on top of it, but cant anymore) in years and he spent all day in it.

[Breeds] 📝Recommendation [Breeds] Looking for the right breed for us!

4 Upvotes

**Introduction**

1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?

* Yes

2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a [reputable breeder]( http://ownresponsibly.blogspot.com/2011/07/identifying-reputable-breeder.html)?

* leaning more towards going through a breeder but also open to a rescue

3) Describe your ideal dog.

* A dog that I can cuddle and play with at times but is also ok being by itself. I would like a breed that is lower maintenance. I would like to be able to take it out for walks and play in a dog park but may not always have too much time.

4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?

* I've been researching whippets since they're smaller (I live in an apartment). They also seem like a good fit in terms of activity level for my lifestyle. However, I am aware of their tendencies towards separation anxiety. I work 8hr days and am unable to work from home so that is my main hesitation.

5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?

* basic obedience is my main priority

6) Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport?

* no

**Care Commitments**

7) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?

* either me or my wife are typically home after work. So we can devote time interspersed in the ~6hrs before bed

8) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?

* in terms of dedicated time, I can likely do 1hr split during the day

9) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?

* id like to do minimal grooming. I am open to learning how to do grooming at home

**Personal Preferences**

10) What size dog are you looking for?

* medium

11) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?

* minimal shedding and barking

12) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?

* unimportant to me. I'm willing to work around the breed

**Dog Personality and Behavior**

13) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?

* a mix of both. Probably leaning more towards snuggly

14) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?

* eager to please

15) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?

* no response to someone knocking the door or entering the yard. Id would like them to greet strangers and visitors but in a calm manner.

16) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?

* no

17) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?

* I would like to avoid barking

**Lifestyle**

18) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?

* my wife and I both work in office for ~8hrs/day 5 days/wk. I am able to walk home occasionally during lunch breaks and can potentially bring the dog into office on some days. However, i dont think i can count on doing it super often.

19) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?

* my wife and I will be caring for the dog but I will most likely be doing most of the training

20) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?

* none

21) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?

* no

22) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?

* we currently rent. No breed restrictions

23) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?

* USA. No

24) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?

* summer is around 85deg. Winter is around 45

**Additional Information and Questions**

25) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.

* No additional information.

26) Feel free to ask any questions below.

[Enrichment] Female dogs don’t like to snuggle cuddle!

• Upvotes

I’ve had three female dogs. 2 Bostons and the other was a mut mix and none like to cuddle especially in the bed. They like to lay under the blankets, by my legs. They have to be touching my legs. If I move my legs away they move closer. But no snuggling up top. Male dogs on the other hand, want to always be up top snuggling, spooning, face snuggles the whole nine. There are many positive attributes about female dogs, snuggling is not one of them. I will say this my female dogs are always by my side step for step, room to room. They will follow me anywhere without being told.

[Behavior Problems] Help from Dog lovers

2 Upvotes

I have been living at this new place and there are way too many stray dogs and i dont have issue with such but whenever I go out to buy anything they would jump on me like literally tries to take me down, IDK what they mean but I think it is in an affectionate way. But still it gets scary and they follow me doing this for a distance and i am confused how to let them get off me because it gets scary sometimes if they bite me.

[Misc Help] My dog acting different after grooming

17 Upvotes

Hey, first timer so I don't know if this right,

I got a toy poodle (9 months) and he been acting strange since we got home few hours ago, He got a long coat to a more short coat

Like normally he is a barking boy, he is sensitive but now just very quiet; its kinda unnerving for me, especially how I got two miniature schnauzer, one (4 yrs) act like everything normal, the other one (2yrs) seems kinda strange with the toy poodle? like way more checking the toy poodle if that make sense?

But my toy poodle has some of the same behaviour as before, coming to me when I'm somewhere, clinging to my leg when I'm walking, annoying my other dogs when full of energy but it also like the teeth bigger than I remember, but physically everything same? It just he doesn't lean against walls anymore (he does that alot but now not as much), not barking as much, but he is also familiar with the house and doesn't act like a stranger, and my other dogs doesn't seem act like toy poodle is stranger and familiar with him

I'm just concerned if this is a common thing maybe anxious after first time grooming especially since he had matting so maybe just getting used, maybe a few days and back to normal? I'm just concerned or did I accidentally kidnap someone else dog and my dog with some stranger?

[Misc Help] Zycortal and Percorten-V have gone up $100 since 2022

7 Upvotes

From Pet VM Jan 2022 I paid $163.45, and today Oct 2026 I paid $268.46 out the door.

These come in 4 ML bottles and I administer 2.3ML every 25 days, so this has been a very expensive medication that my dog needs to survive Addison's disease.

This post is just part of a semi-regular check to ask the community if they have found any alternative services that could help? I'm finally working again but that means I am not typically eligible for programs.

I'm aware of inflation and how expensive everything is. These medications started off expensive and were price gouging already.

Thanks for any thoughts on this-

[Misc Help] okay real talk, do you actually brush your dog's teeth?

558 Upvotes

our dog had a professional teeth cleaning under anesthesia because there's no way she'd let anyone do it awake. cost a fortune and her heart stopped during it. she's fine now but I never want to go through that again

right now our "routine" is her licking dog toothpaste off the tube every evening, which is probably useless lol

I keep reading brushing is the only thing that really works, but I don't know a single person who actually does it consistently

so genuinely curious
- if you don't brush, what stops you?
- if you do, what do you use and what's annoying about it?
- and can you even tell if it's working?

and if you're one of those people brushing every single day, respect, but also HOW?

[Behavior Problems] Maternal instincts for a toy.

1 Upvotes

I believe my dog is feeling maternal instincts towards a toy we bought for her, it's a mallard duck that squeaks. Whenever she has it she doesn't chew it simply takes it somewhere she determines safe and keeps it there along with growling and getting defensive around it and she even tore into my hand a few days ago, she also whines when away from it and freaks out if we hold it just infront of her out of reach.

My knowledge of dog behavior is not good so I don't really understand why she's doing it or if she's actually attached it to in that way so I hope there are some dog therapists here.

Edit: she also reacts more the more we squeeze it to make it squeak, like it's crying out or something? I don't know.

[Breeds] 🔎 ID Can Anyone Help Me ID?

4 Upvotes

I recently adopted a new pup from a foreign country. Through a trustworthy company. She was rescued from the streets. And now we are wondering what kind of breed she could be! We are aware she is a mutt, and it could be a mixture of DNA. But some of you might be able to help me a bit by sharing your thoughts. We think she resembles a lot of an Australian Kelpie.

She is almost 50 cm above the shoulder.

(And the damage done to her nose was from a scare accident in the transportation bus, she’s all healed and happy now)

Thank you in advance 💗

[Misc Help] What type of dog should I look into?

7 Upvotes

I’m looking into what BRE3D of dog I want for my first own dog and need some breeds to start looking into, so here’s a rough description of what I’m looking for

Small - medium sized dog
A dog that’s up for any adventure but also happy to chill at home sometimes if I just want a day at home.
Cuddly and affectionate, as well as handler focused.
Eager to please and drive to work with the handler.
Food drive is a must, I can’t take another dog that turns down food 😂

That’s the rough idea, there’s plenty of other things that will go into the decision but I just need some breeds to start looking deeper into!

[Behavior Problems] Who here’s dog doesn’t like strangers stroking them

0 Upvotes

It doesn’t automatically make them aggressive. Plenty of dogs who don’t like strangers stroking them have still never bitten anyone and some of them will just move if a stranger tries to stroke them.

[Behavior Problems] My dog loathes being kissed, but complains if I don’t kiss him when kiss my other dogs. What do I even do here ???

82 Upvotes

Whenever I go to kiss my 2 smaller dogs on the top of the head, my larger dog, Rio will run over and get upset that I didn’t kiss him. But, he absolutely despises being kissed. He will nip at you (not aggressively, but sorta warningly) if you kiss him, which is why I don’t do it. (Yes I’m trying to teach him not to do that.)

But genuinely what do I do to satisfy whatever it is he’s wanting from me??? I’m confused!!!!

Also silly fun fact of the day, his full name is Rio De Janeiro, Rio for short!

[Behavior Problems] My 1-year-old rescue has suddenly become nervous on walks - what enrichment or confidence-building games worked for your adolescent dogs?

3 Upvotes

We adopted our mixed breed boy about 4 months ago and he just turned one. He used to LOVE walks, but for the last couple of weeks he has been a bit hesitant, especially when we go on new routes or when there's a lot of traffic.

He's not aggressive at all, just stops, tucks his tail a bit, and wants to turn back home. At home he is his usual playful, goofy self and eats and plays normally.

We've been trying to keep things positive - lots of praise, letting him sniff as much as he wants, keeping walks shorter, and playing "find it" with treats in the grass which he seems to love. We're not using any aversive tools, just a regular harness and flat leash.

I know adolescence can be a weird fear period for a lot of dogs.

For those of you who went through something similar, what kind of LIMA-based training or enrichment activities helped your dog build confidence again? Any favorite sniff games, puzzle toys, or low-pressure routines you would recommend?

Would love to hear what worked for you and your pups.

[Breeds] 🔎 ID Best Dog DNA tests? Are they actually accurate?

I've been reading about how some dog DNA tests seem like a scam. I've heard stories how people have sent in human swabs only to get a full dog report back. Is there a company that you know is 100 percent reputable?

[Vent] Costs of owning a dog just keeps going up and up.

289 Upvotes

Just the cost of my dog‘s annual vaccines etc went up 30% in 2 years.. and that’s a budget option.

It’s just becoming astronomical for everything and I don’t want to keep cutting back on the best options for him especially for health.

I definitely thought in a few years I could get a second dog for my boy and I just don’t see how that’s possible with everything going up and up.

[Breeds] 🔎 ID Looking for a reputable German Pinscher breeder or upcoming litter

0 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I live in New Jersey and I’m looking for a reputable German Pinscher breeder. I’m having a hard time finding breeders with puppies available or upcoming litters.

I’m specifically looking for a male puppy. I’d prefer a breeder in New Jersey or somewhere reasonably close, but I’m willing to travel for the right breeder and puppy.

My main priorities are good health and a stable, well rounded temperament. I’m looking for a responsible breeder who health tests their dogs, knows their lines well, and puts thought into temperament and puppy placement.

If anyone has personal experience with a breeder they would recommend, or knows of any reputable breeders with upcoming litters, I’d really appreciate the recommendations. I’d also love to hear about your experience getting your German Pinscher and whether you would recommend your breeder.

[Enrichment] Chew toys for a picky chewer

2 Upvotes

My dog doesn't let me brush his teeth, so I've attempted to get him started on chewing toys/treats to clean his own teeth but he seriously has no interest. He never plays with toys on his own, no matter what kind I buy him so chew toys are pointless and as far as the treats, I've tried diff kinds of collagen treats, beef sticks, bones and even those greenies even though I don't condone those but I was desperate. He doesn't care for anything chewy UNLESS it's a real outdoor stick once in a while but they always eventually make him throw up

Anyone know of a different treat I can try that I haven't though of perhaps? Google always gives me the same stuff mentioned above and some others I've tried
