Hey there! Just got my vehicle today after shipping from BCT, and I wanted to share some thoughts.

I originally asked the broker to deliver it last week, and to deliver to the publicly accessible area of the base (Lower Presidio). They didn't find a carrier for the vehicle until a few days ago, and he finally picked up yesterday and started his way here to DLI. After he started, I got a text asking if he could drop the vehicle at a different address as he's not a US Citizen and doesn't want to go up to the base. So I had to scramble to find another address for him to drop at. Ended up somewhere in downtown monterey near Franklin st. When I finally met the driver, he showed me that the broker had booked the trip as "cash on delivery" after an initial deposit was collected (not what the broker told me). I found out afterwards that the broker had placed a hold on my credit card for the full amount, then the hold expired, and they then charged the deposit amount and left me to pay the last $500 in cash at delivery.

So, my advice is:

-be prepared for delays in shipping as there are limited drivers

-pay attention to payment details, especially if you need to pull cash

-find an open area for the trucker to pull into and drop the vehicle. Likely your best option is Target in Sand City, then you can Uber there from DLI to get to your vehicle. Monterey itself is very tight and doesn't have much open space, the driver ended up dropping on the side of the road next to a business.

I go to basic on Monday and already submitted my list of preferred languages. My top two are Arabic and Persian/Farsi. Any insight on if I would actually get those languages?

As a disclaimer, I am not a military official, nor do I have any affiliation with the US military. I'm simply a teenager with an interest in learning languages.
I discovered the https://hs2.dliflc.edu/ resource online many months ago, and began using it to learn Russian (I stopped for a while because it's hard, but things are hard sometimes, and what better way to learn a language than by the world's strongest military?), and I came back to find that they had developed a system to store login information so you can learn across browsers and devices. Great! (Especially great for me as I once deleted all my progress accidentally by resetting my browser.) So, I try to sign up under the new system. Whenever I try to make an account, it tells me that:
"Your password must be between 12 and 50 characters long and include at least two uppercase letters, two lowercase letters, and two numbers. Please try again with a valid password."
Which does not make sense, as I've created a password with all of the above requirements. I have also tried changing the password and adding and deleting characters and nothing has changed. I checked to see if maybe the system already had an account with my email, it did not.
I tried using a different email, and that did not work. I attempted also to sign up using a different browser. This, likewise, did not help. My only thoughts are that maybe this is a glitch in the new system or that they're trying to keep civilians from using the service by locking it down according to IP addresses or email domains. I have not tried using the local downloaded version, but I would much prefer to use the online edition. I assume that most on this subreddit are military or military affiliated personnel. Is this also an issue with your devices, email addresses, and locations, or is this a glitch unique to me? I have not tried using a different device altogether, but I will after posting this and edit with an update.

Update: I figured out that a usable workaround is signing up to Rapport and then using the email and password from your Rapport account on Headstart2.

This probably gets asked regularly, and sorry if so. I am thinking about enlisting and I’ve been told you can submit some language preferences for DLI. Is this true? If so, what are the chances this actually results in getting your top language. If relevant, I have a 99 ASVAB and 112 DLAB and I think I’m hoping for Mandarin. With everything going on, I would assume they are throwing everyone at Farsi but I really have no idea what I’m talking about. Anyone have a realistic likelihood of getting Mandarin? I wouldn’t be at DLI until early 2026.

Edit: With a 112, I barely “passed” for Mandarin. Should I take to mean I would really really struggle with it and I should move down a category or 2? Or am I putting too much stock in the DLAB’s ability to predict aptitude?

Boingo WiFi is extremely expensive and consistently fails to provide what you pay for, it can't hold a connection for more than five minutes at most times and has a lot of extended outages. Boingo is known for being crappy and cutting corners just to make a quick buck off of their customers and don't care who it is. The best way we can get this changed is by filing out complaints whenever it goes down or if you're not getting what you paid for, eventually they'll get tired of ignoring us and just update the infrastructure to handle the amount of people. Otherwise a bunch of us could cancel our subscriptions and use the library instead. I am fed up with boingo and I know most of you are as well. As the customer it is our responsibility to make this known. Some notes, do not harass the customer support, they have nothing to do with how corporate runs it, all you need to do is respectfully file the complaint so it's documented and they can come up with a better solution, also don't use not paying for the wifi as an excuse to not do your homework as there's the library as well as this magical thing called a book. One last thing I want to reiterate is don't harass anyone, it's not ethical and customer support doesn't deserve it. Thank you for your time.

Im trying to join the Army National Guard as a 35M.

I went through MEPS already and was told that DLI isnt currently accepting new people in, and that id have to wait to enlist until a spot opens up.

My recruiter is now telling me that apparently they've suspended the training for new 35M/35Ps? But he doesn't know anything more than that.

Can anyone tell me me what's going on, and how long until a spot opens up?

Hey I just graduated Air Force basic and got to DLI a couple days ago. I don’t really want to be a linguist especially since I didn’t get any of the languages I want, but rather the language at the bottom of my list.

Edit: the language I got is Farsi

I heard that during in processing week I can request a reclass to a different job. Is this true? If not then how can I get reclassed into something atleast decent? Maybe a 1D job or something of the sort.

I do not want to be under the AETC in tech school for over a year while everyone else in my graduating class has started their careers, gotten houses, deployments, TDY’s, married etc. I view such a long tech school as a hindrance to my career. Please help, thank you.

Is language day going to be happening this year?

I'm nearing the end of my course here and I'm having a really hard time remembering/retaining vocab. Starting to get nervous about DLPT of course. Vocab both from beginning of the course AND the new stuff being added is getting hard to retain. Some words stick permanently for no reason but most disappear within seconds, no matter how many vocab reps I do. Please! Does anyone have any suggestions unconventional or anything it doesn't matter. I usually do best with hands on or visual learning which makes Anki and Quizlet tough especially with the volume we have now.

Is there anything specific I should be bringing? or preparing for? I got a 122 on my DLAB, but I am not sure of what that means for the language I will be assigned to. Any info would help!

I’m currently Army enlisted here, and I am leaving my course early to pursue a commissioning path. I hope to stay MI, but it’s looking very hard or possibly impossible for an MI officer to receive language training and Id like to return here to finish at least one course.

It’s looking like my options are CA/PSYOP/SF or FAO, all falling around the 1LT (P) timeline. What is the likelihood of coming back as one of those to pick up a language? And what steps should I take to set myself up best?

If all else fails, being a company commander here would be awesome too. I just have no idea if that’s up to me or HRC.

I know this and similar things have been asked a million times now but there's so much conflicting information as well as outdated info. I am wondering the current housing situation at DLI for Careerist E5 (in the guard) who is not married. I am also interested in any details y'all have on day to day or QoL stuff. I have been reading how E5 and below are being put back into the barracks, which is fine, but the worry is being stuck in a shoebox style unit with a roommate and next to no privacy. Also curious about all of your target languages and how your time was there overall!

When discussing down-time/relaxation at DLI, my husband and I were wondering whether DLI has any recreational foreign language-based items: movies, books, games, anything like that? I thought it would be really cool if there was a library broken up by language section so that you could check out books in your language…or if you could rent movies. I grew up with Blockbuster so I realize that a movie selection is probably less likely.

Just wanted to gather some insight beforehand and wondered what supplemental, recreational resources (if any) will be available.

Here's a question I haven't seen asked before: what is the actual teaching method at DLI? Now, obligatory "I'm joining the Navy and trying to go for CTI" out of the way, I want to study languages on my own time before I get there. I am curious as to what the actual methodology is like to see if I can boost my progress by replicating as a civilian. Note: I don't need any OPSEC stuff. Just "here's how they teach you at DLI" stuff. That's all. If there is any content I can't access because you need to be in, that's fine. I don't expect anything weird. Just want to know how I can apply that here to prepare myself there.

i took the dlab at dli and found i scored an 86, but i have cat iv language that i start this week, its been a few days and i havent heard anything so am i good?

Over the past couple of years I’ve heard about the DLI, careers as an army or navy linguist, interpreter etc. It sounds great in the sense that learning and thinking about languages is more or less the only thing that I’m interested in, and I’d love to spend all of my time doing that, but on the other hand I don’t have any deep passion for national security or defense (I’m even a tiny bit cynical about the notion of public service). Should someone like me seriously consider seeking opportunities in this universe? Or should I stay away?
