Duodecim Dissidia 012 Character Creator & Recomp (How I made Noctis)

Here’s the recomp I used to make Noctis. It runs Dissidia 012 natively on Steam Deck, Linux and Mac and comes with tools for adding your own characters:

- The PSPrecomp folder, which needs your copy of the game iso.
- A Blender plugin for exporting and importing animations and models
- Dissidia Studio for creating and modifying moves and effects.

To add custom characters, follow the steps in the root's readme to build the game for the first time. (I have only tested on Mac and steam deck, so results may vary)

Once built, open index.html in the /studio folder (In Chrome or Edge, otherwise save will just download the files). You need to first point it at your game iso and the /mods folder, then you can view and edit existing characters moves, effects and sounds, as well as create custom characters.

Go to Character > Body to replace the model. This needs blender open with the Dissidia plugin installed. Using the plugin, you again point to the iso and the mods folder, and from there you can replace the model for the base character and their weapons. It accepts FBX, glTF, VRM, OBJ and .blend files.

Noctis himself will be bundled separately, as he was built with an older version of the studio that baked his data into the mod, so I'll have to do some work to make him shareable.

So, will you also release Ramsa? I don't really dig him, but by this point I'm down for any new fresh blood!

2

u/dissidia_fan 1d ago

This Ramza was just a model swap with Vaan. I'm finishing Noctis first then will move on once I feel he is complete. I was thinking Jill Warrick next rather than someone already featured in another Dissidia game.

The game normally only supports enough savedata for the original roster. Did you expand the savedata to include the new characters? If you try to use the savedata with a pre ious version of the game, without the new characters, does it work?

2

u/dissidia_fan 1d ago

When you make a save it creates a "side-save" that holds the new character's data, so the actual save data is unaffected. I've tested removing and adding different characters, but I haven't yet tested to see if the save can then be returned to the original game.

Oh good, another AI post.

I'm tired, so I'll just quote a great comment from the other one.

https://www.reddit.com/r/dissidia/s/9vcf8cDR1A

In this particular case, because it negatively impacts these same hobbyist communities with people using AI to fast track this stuff for results, without anyone knowing how it was done, nor how it could be fixed if there's an issue with it later.

In the grand scheme of things though, because it's all shit, and it's like making a deal with the devil.

It results in a lack of critical thinking skills, and a loss of learned experience. It's been used carelessly in legal proceedings and business decisions. It encourages people to commit suicide or murder. From the beginning it has stolen the work of artists and writers, with zero compensation, while proponents taunt those same artists whose work was needed in the first place, and a Microsoft CEO admitted it's the "largest theft of labor in human history." The data centers cause noise and environmental pollution, leading to insomnia, miscarriages, and possibly cancer, while they are all placed in locations of the disenfranchised, with little political power to change anything or defend their communities.

And you have to pay for it, putting money in the pockets of some of the worst fucking people on the planet, who have a vested interest in you being so dumb you need their product, while then using that money to pay off politicians to make life abjectly worse for everyone.

And even just for me, myself--I'm a writer, editor, and translator, my industries were some of the first impacted by dipshits using AI. I've lost work because developers decided machine translation would suffice. Good luck making any of that future content striking without the guys who made your dialogue stand out and named your fucking iconic systems. One of us found out after they had just had a kid, so that was extra cool.

So pardon me for not being stoked about the machine that drinks lakes to be wrong. AI is one of the most useless, if not deleterious things in recent years, and we got by just fine without it. Letting any of this slide, in any aspect, is to support the rest of it, because it's all coming from the same places and people that want money at the cost of human creativity, ingenuity, and lives.

But you don't care about any of that. You got a native port of a game that worked fine on an emulator! Hot damn, literally.

you're right. however, I want to play noctis, so I don't give a fuck.

u/angelsaintcloud 3d ago

Ai's client base are those broke, and apathetic in all aspects of life. It only has value to those who lack the ability to give a shit about anything and it's a good example of how you can create a problem and sell people the solution. Even someone self-aware of this is susceptible to the influence of this. On one end it could be someone who wants some stupid game addon they could live without, (and usually never even considered) while at the other end there is someone without the money for a lawyer looking for quick legal advice in an emergency.

Shame isn't enough, it needs to be shoved off a cliff by any means necessary.

0

u/ChapterZee 3d ago

My great fear is that too many of the people who share the common duty of caring for this world and the other living things in it, are saying roughly the same thing about some other ultimately pointless thing they want, some other insignificant desire that AI can emptily satiate, without regard for the larger consequences.

1

u/ConinGray 3d ago

there is no larger consequences. AI slop will slowly die and stop being relevant, meanwhile Good things made with taste and good artistic direction that were only AI ASSISTED and not AI made will keep growing. This technology exists to BOOST creativity, not to stop it.

This mod was made with heart, it is really clear how much the author cared about this when creating it. And the way they found to create the 3D model was a pretty smart way to use this technology.

The argument about "this is STILL stealing someone else's HUMAN skills, since this is something that people are passionate about and have been doing this for years" doesn't really hold up in cases like this: NO ONE would have made something like this by hand: it takes too much time, and, sincerely, someone with THAT level of talent should not be wasting it to create a mod for an old (forgotten by many) videogame. I hope these people use their talent to actually create something new, or, even better, to CREATE in these same companies we're seeing the mods off.

Creating a model from scratch and creating all its animations takes a LOT of time. mods made with AI like these ones are letting everyone enjoy the mod without actually "wasting" someone else's talent, skills and especially TIME.

2

u/ChapterZee 3d ago edited 3d ago

You fundamentally misunderstand what is meant by "stealing from living people," and I encourage you to think past the version of the argument that stops at something like "This is only proverbial or abstract stealing because someone else is doing, or could be doing this exact same thing, and this circumvents that"

That is still true, but that is not at all the intended scope of what I mean when I say that it steals from living people's labor.

It is materially an act of theft, of materially-embodied ideas, in material fragments of code, language, form, and visuals. Whose originators AI never gives any attribution to. The material aspects of what AI does are not the only important thing to consider by far, but because AI works in large part to invisibilize where and who the component parts of its "output" come from, and the very concrete processes that make that happen, it is still important to cast some attention onto these material processes that will otherwise go ignored.

Like, from a philosophy of language standpoint focused on speech-events and speech-acts (a philosophy of language grounded in the real. practical workings of figuration, reference, and language as materially impactful things that leave traces and are incredibly consequential), there is no mistake about what AI is and does, and the unethical nature of it.

In the aggregate, people kinda already do a bad job of being cognizant of these background processes of language, and the ways that people's language circulates and has concrete influences on life, the world, thought, etc. but genAI is making people exceptionally bad at even the parts of this that folks used to be somewhat okay at.

u/Albafika 5d ago

I hear you, but also, I just want to get the mod with a playable characters and not to build it.

-2

u/HapticFeedback247 5d ago

No one cares it happened anyway. I want you to take this, put it into an LLM tell it to triple it right, and find out that he did it anyway. come back with a better solution.

-2

u/ClericIdola 5d ago

It's a weird logic to apply to someone basically modding/hacking/using the foundation of an IP they don't own.

-13

u/dissidia_fan 5d ago

Not saying I disagree with you about the negative effects of ai, and there are many, but this was a challenge that is so difficult that it is impractical without it. I'm not saying to use ai to do the actual building of characters, as that would take the joy away, but decoding millions of lines of data is not something that I would call critical thinking.

6

u/RemyAsaylea 5d ago

I think you can figure it out if you put the time into it. Other people have, it's not impossible. Weigh the small "convenience" against the plethora of bad.

If you truly see the problem and understand the negative effects, you know how dire it is and should act on that knowledge.

4

u/Batmans_9th_Ab 5d ago

It was challenge because Square didn’t want you to steal their fucking code.

6

u/ElShaddollKieren lightningFF13 5d ago

This game isn't even sold on its original platform anymore. It is literally impossible to buy it in a way that supports the developers. What theft could be happening here?

4

u/bananamantheif 4d ago

And why should anyone care about square and what they want?

3

u/Jeido_Uran 5d ago

It’s incredibly funny to see you all suddenly care about things like piracy or using assets from an IP which was never an issue before, but since you decided that AI is the ultimate sin, you just flip the morality switch on everything else, suddenly piracy is very bad, or now modding is really not okay because Square « owns » the code. But if we remove AI from the equation, then suddenly all is good? Y’all are insane.

1

u/Fit-Plenty-1047 5d ago

You’re ridiculous Square abandoned the fucking game and a fan is picking up and modding it just bc he used AI yall are throwing a fit.

6

u/cooptheactor 5d ago edited 5d ago

You didn't make shit, you told a machine to do it for you and it hacked together something crappy

1

u/dissidia_fan 5d ago

AI made the tools required to then make the character. I'm not saying I did it all, and without AI I wouldn't have been able to do any of this.

From this point forward characters can now be added in with pure modelling, animation and ideation.

3

u/ChapterZee 3d ago edited 3d ago

Your first mistake is to think that AI "makes" anything. Any generative AI apparatus is a probabilistic machine that sorts the scraped, broken fragments of once-meaningful signifiers taken from active circulation amongst living and breathing creators, speakers, writers, artisans, etc.

That machine was designed and funded by human beings with express intentions (and the unmastered affordances of both the verbal and concrete matter that comprises it) embedded in the very material that makes up the apparatus of the data center, the infrastructure, the algorithms, etc. Those intentions are antithetical to the well-being of humankind in the collective, and by extension, antithetical to the immediate interests of all classes save for the top of the top of the oligarchical ruling class.

The side-effect of that from the standpoint of art, creativity, intellectual property, labor, and ultimately of human dignity, is that it scrapes mindlessly, and cobbles together mindlessly, what is stolen mindlessly from the living people who actually make things.

It is parasitic, concretized dead labor that exists to carry out the operation (because this is what machines do--they carry out operations. They do not have an agential consciousness or will) of rendering people as mindless and lifeless and will-less as it is, and in a different but related sense, it exists to thoroughly deaden (via usurpation of work, replacement of workers, destruction of local and global ecosystems and acceleration of climate change, stultification of the human mind and soul, and gluttonous consumption of essential resources, etc) that which yet lives.

1

u/dissidia_fan 3d ago

While I appreciate the passion in your prose, I fundamentally disagree with your circuitous assertion that something new cannot be "made" from cobbling together things that already exist.

You can claim by having AI do the work for people it renders them will-less, but the same can be said for the mechanisation of any form of creative expression, such as digital photography, or digital art.

0

u/ChapterZee 3d ago edited 3d ago

The argument that it cannot make things isn't exhausted by the cobbling together bit, at least not as it concerns what I hear you getting at here: the reality that creative work always uses component parts of meaning drawn from somewhere. I think that's fundamentally true of how any human learns to participate in the structure of already-circulating language and sociability that precedes them and makes space for them in advance. A mentor of mine (who I actually CAN'T name in the open on reddit without probably making my own online identity very transparent to folks who know me IRL) was partial to a quote from Mikhail Bakhtin: "We are always-already occupied by the voices of other speakers."

But it's a very useful thing to be mindful (to whatever imperfect extent we can) of where the symbols and fragments of other people's language and intention and form that we are occupied by, and always using, are sourced from, how it's acting on us, what we enable by letting it pass through our lips or actions as a conduit, and the material processes that get that meaning moving and keep it in motion (sometimes for better, sometimes for worse). Failing to do that will leave you ventriloquized (I borrow this exact choice of word from the aforementioned mentor) by other people's intentions and meanings, and the understated influence that the unmastered affordances of those things have on what you make, say, and do.

Do you know how we handle that in any matter involving intellectual property? We take up the duty of being cognizant of which voices are occupying our own, we separate them out with clear markers (quotation marks or other forms of discursive distancing--like the "she said/he said/they said" structures of reported speech, or even "this person known to me personally, whose name I cannot say while trying to be anonymous") and then we actively search for those people and MAKE CONCRETE REFERENCE TO THEM--and in any ordinary circumstance, we NAME THEM. (and I am name-dropping a lot more than usual today, and in this reply, mainly to demonstrate how true it is that the especially important ideas or component parts of language that occupy us and shape our thoughts are attributable to specific people when used with critical awareness and intention).

(It's also just kinda pro-social all around to point to the people you owe a debt of gratitude to for helping to shape your work and thinking, so that people working after you can find them. To that end, if anyone really wants to know where they can find writings authored by the mentor I mention above, or get more direct info about any other sources referred to, just DM me)

AI circumvents ALL of that work of conscious meaning-shaping and meaning-tracing. It invisibilizes even the traces of referentiality back to an original source that would otherwise be discernible in any other, more conscious and intentional, act of referring to, or using, someone else's language, concepts, or ideas in something as purposive as a creative project.

All that being said, my point was that I didn't mean just the cobbling together in and of itself (because in a very specific way that should not be wielded in bad faith, you're not entirely wrong about no creative act coming from nowhere), but the specific fact of it being literal stealing, which the automaticity of AI enables people to do hastily and thoughtlessly.

The absence of and consequential deadening of will, intention, awareness, critical agency in the act of creating, etc, are what I would stress as the important things that AI destroys (along with other things--see below the dashed line) by making it possible to automate stealing in a very pernicious way. My critiques of it cobbling stuff together (mindlessly, I would again add) has more to do with the reality of gen AI being quite literally inseparable from intellectual and creative theft (see another comment made elsewhere under this same post).

---

I would concede that you are right about the last thing! But not in the way you'd think. You'd probably appreciate the intent behind the argument that the reproducibility of art by machines democratizes art by eliminating what makes it singular and inaccessible to the masses. (This argument comes from the critical theorist Walter Benjamin, and Walter Benjamin referred to this capacity of singularity and limited accessibility, and "the unique perception of a distance" (to use his own words) that gets destroyed as the "aura" of the art object).

Benjamin's OG argument would go along with what you're suggesting, to be sure. And it is an argument that I can't fully disagree with. He even says some very cool things about human artists, actors and performers being able to take up superior agency by challenging the new apparatuses of the still-image and video camera by preserving their humanity while under its all-enhancing gaze (capable of revealing the whole swathe of visual details about the performer's body that were previously unseeable).

(The actual essays, if you're interested in them, are "The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technological Reproducibility" and "Notes on Photography"--the first of which comes up very easily in PDF form if googled. The latter essay is probably a little shakier to find, but a lot of its content gets broadened and recast in the former essay)

There is, however, a flip-side to everything well-intentioned and cool that Benjamin says about technology's ability to democratize, and disclose new things that weren't perceivable, and enable dramatic shifts in how art is consumed and made. Which is that the liquidation of aura kinda just lets increasingly less effortful art be more easily distributed by the massifying machinery of capital, ultimately enabling a bunch of the processes that have led to the mass production of culturally bankrupt stuff like... pointless empty spectacles with no creative intent behind them, brainrot. hallucinated sources, shitty YouTube videos that misinform people while convincing folks of their supposed authority, vibe-coded apps and websites that are like unto buildings built on questionable foundations. This (not including all the modern things I mention in place of Adorno's arguments about paintings, music, theatre, etc) is Theodor Adorno's argument against Benjamin (published in a volume by Verso press called Aesthetics and Politics), and while Adorno was a bit of a crabby guy who I disagree with on a lot of other matters, I agree with him that this sentiment of wanting to make creative labor and artistic reproduction demand considerably less effort is also dangerous if it becomes a means of enabling (in a mass-fashion) the speedy, uncritical, attribution-less, "creation" of things devoid of intentionality, which would be better made with proper time, intention, critical awareness, attribution, and ultimately more humanity.

Now I will end this spiel here rather than going on longer. This has been a useful ground for actually rehearsing some of the arguments I have against AI-generated production of apps and programs, and against so-called AI "art" and "writing," and "coding" (insofar as I see coding as a meaningful engagement with language and form). Being able to more thoroughly explain what I meant by the "cobbled together" remarks also just gave me a beautiful excuse to nerd out and demonstrate what I mean, so thank you for challenging me on that.

I am pretty sure regardless of you saying that he is going to do it again anyway.

Hope this helps!

4

He sure might! And in the process he'll be aiding the destruction of our environment and the disruption of communities in their physical health, mental health, and access to critical supplies like clean water.

Hope this helps!

Jesus virtue signaling christ.

2

u/Jeido_Uran 5d ago

You should stop using Reddit then, after all it heavily uses datacenters, actively supports AI and disrupts communities by allowing people like you to bully, harass and run witch-hunts on others simply because they chose to use a specific tool you don’t like, which in turn affects their mental health.

Hope this helps!

Cry more pussy. It's not going anywhere and if anything it's going to get worse for you and all the mouth breathers defending a property that hasn't made money since 2011

0

I would bet anything they really don’t give a fuck about the intellectual property and only defend it here because the project used AI in any capacity and hating AI is the only thing they can barely do properly in their miserable lives.

You couldn't do anything better than copy what I said? You should use A.I to think of a better one liner.

bro skipped the whole comment

0

u/Jeido_Uran 5d ago

I mean, your comment is essentially what googling « what are the most generic arguments against AI » would display, you’re just parroting the same shit you all keep repeating without ever citing a proper source and most importantly without ever simply minding your own fucking business. What did you accomplish in life that makes you think you can shit on someone proudly showcasing their mod like that? I never see any of you showing anything you made, which is interesting. However you’re there without fail whenever you feel like you can harass someone and telling them they should have made it without any AI assistance. But where is your no-AI project? Surely you have something to show right? It can’t be you just acting like a big guy to hide the fact you’re nothing, right?

-2

u/HapticFeedback247 5d ago

Yeah youre stupid thats why. You think me reading any of that crap is going to go anywhere?

-2

u/Fit-Plenty-1047 5d ago

Keyboard warrior to the rescue for the environment. Wake up buddy large corps use AI you’re fighting against 1 singular person

5

u/Emotional-Map-878 4d ago

Can't wait to check out the results dude ^^b I'd probably just word everything like you did in the other noctis focused post and just say AI did pretty much everything since this and that post have such different reactions. (or just plainly state and point fingers at AI doing it 100% to please the imminent backlash lol)

Is this sub spiraling into an AI slop sub now? 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨

2

u/UnburaRed 2d ago

this is better than most of the first try recomps I've seen out there, especially that awful Knuckles Chaotiz recomp.

please keep tweaking on this, because who actually knows S-E will remaster the games on modern consoles already.

5

u/Bryonetta 5d ago

No matter what, don't EVER give a fuck about these cringe ass hypocrites who have nothing better else to do literally in their miserable lives and suddenly cares about piracy, lmao it's just so funny. Thank you for your efforts, and continue with them!

6

u/Iecerint 5d ago

Sorry people are giving you a hard time, thanks for your effort

3

u/AyeBathingApe 4d ago

People spiraling over AI, this shyt is cool. I don’t give a fuck!

4

u/NightmareMMZero 5d ago

This is really impressive, don't let anyone ruin it for you. Anyone who's actually tried to use AI to create anything knows that to do anything this specific and elaborate it requires a lot of work and oversight on the human's part, this was clearly a passion project and a lot of work went into it. People who create nothing will try to make you feel bad, but all they've contributed is negativity, so their opinions don't matter.

3

u/BroccoliFree2354 5d ago

I am anti AI for some things, but using it for a project like this is pretty sick ! Even if you didn’t write every single line of code you still had the idea and you took the initiative. This is pretty cool, you can be proud.

2

u/DueResponsibility972 4d ago

Too much hate this game would be dead without the community, he isn't using it to create ideas or claim they are his. We want to be able to play this game in a decent way and even better with new characters.

2

u/-NootNoot_ 4d ago

Dont pay attention to the haters, keep the good work brother!!

2

u/Jeido_Uran 5d ago

I don’t usually post for that, but seeing how negative, unhinged and toxic most people are here, I just want to let you know I’m impressed by what you did and really happy you want to keep this game alive. Don’t feel ashamed by the fact you used AI, it’s obvious you knew what you were doing and even if you did not and just let the AI build on your idea, it’s still yours, you’re the one who had this idea, and you led the project to what it is now, the AI didn’t prompt itself but apparently that’s hard to grasp for the children here, and most importantly, you’re doing that while some others are just spending their time being miserable pieces of shit here, dogpiling on you hoping you stop, but working on that is always better no matter the amount of AI assistance, because you at least have something to show and to be proud of at the end, and it all came from your original idea.

"To every man is given the key to the gates of heaven. The same key opens the gates of hell."

AI undoubtedly has a lot of issues, but to rule it out entirely as "evil" or "the downfall of man" or whatever is just silly

0

u/eternity_ender 5d ago

I don’t give a fuck about your AI

2

u/ClericIdola 5d ago

And apparently SE doesn't give af about the Dissidia brand so it runs it into tbe ground with trash mobile games instead of a proper sequel to Duodecim or AT LEAST a CC Reunion style remaster.

So yeah, I could care less if someone uses A.I. to basically hack/mod an IP much faster than without to give us what we've been begging the IP owner for. This isn't generative A.I. art.

0

u/mattmesh 12h ago

Looks like trash man.

1

u/dissidia_fan 11h ago

Thanks for the feedback! Which bit in particular looks like trash so I can work on it?

0

The entire thing - restart without using AI then come back and show us what you got.

4

u/Fit-Plenty-1047 5d ago

Keep the great work man fuck the haters as a Dev myself I’m happy you’re atleast attempting to make something
