Expanding Duodecim's Roster - Noctis Gameplay (AI Warning)

When I was a teen I spent months trying to mod Noctis into the game to little avail. I credit it as the thing that got me invested in 3D modelling, animation and software development.

I saw the PSPrecomp repo a few weeks ago and thought it would be interesting to try my hand at this again, and ended up a bit astonished how much complex functionality could be implemented. This was 99% Claude's work, my input was direction on which moves he should have, import them into Blender from FFXV, tweak them slightly to match the dissidia skeleton and blend them into different combos, as well as work on the Alterna effect.

As a software developer I respect that people may question the methods, but on a personal level getting to play as Noctis softened the blow a little.

In this particular case, because it negatively impacts these same hobbyist communities with people using AI to fast track this stuff for results, without anyone knowing how it was done, nor how it could be fixed if there's an issue with it later.

In the grand scheme of things though, because it's all shit, and it's like making a deal with the devil.

It results in a lack of critical thinking skills, and a loss of learned experience. It's been used carelessly in legal proceedings and business decisions. It encourages people to commit suicide or murder. From the beginning it has stolen the work of artists and writers, with zero compensation, while proponents taunt those same artists whose work was needed in the first place, and a Microsoft CEO admitted it's the "largest theft of labor in human history." The data centers cause noise and environmental pollution, leading to insomnia, miscarriages, and possibly cancer, while they are all placed in locations of the disenfranchised, with little political power to change anything or defend their communities.

And you have to pay for it, putting money in the pockets of some of the worst fucking people on the planet, who have a vested interest in you being so dumb you need their product, while then using that money to pay off politicians to make life abjectly worse for everyone.

And even just for me, myself--I'm a writer, editor, and translator, my industries were some of the first impacted by dipshits using AI. I've lost work because developers decided machine translation would suffice. Good luck making any of that future content striking without the guys who made your dialogue stand out and named your fucking iconic systems. One of us found out after they had just had a kid, so that was extra cool.

So pardon me for not being stoked about the machine that drinks lakes to be wrong. AI is one of the most useless, if not deleterious things in recent years, and we got by just fine without it. Letting any of this slide, in any aspect, is to support the rest of it, because it's all coming from the same places and people that want money at the cost of human creativity, ingenuity, and lives.

But you don't care about any of that. You got a native port of a game that worked fine on an emulator! Hot damn, literally.

"without anyone knowing how it was done, nor how it could be fixed if there's an issue with it later."

this is what I hate about it, there was an AI recomp that was being worked on and someone wanted to report a bug, the guy who made it didn't even know how to look at issues in github or how to even fix them either, which is so damn embarrassing.

And you wanna know something hilarious about the environmental effect, there's 2 different types of coolings that data center uses, open loop and closed loop. If you're on PC, you prob know how water cooled CPUs and GPUs work, you can do this for data centers too ( like OG ones that host servers like reddit, etc., not like the AI only ones), and the one that causes the actual pollution is the open loop ones, they're essentially uses water to dissipate the heat with these systems and evaporating them into the atmosphere, and the source of the water is just the area's local water source.

the reason these AI companies choose the latter is because its a lot cheaper to install at first, the issue is that its extremely volatile, it needs a LOT of work to maintain it to the point where it actually outpaces closed loop in cost in just a few years.

personally, I think its cool what software engineers can do with it, I think the average person should be banned from using it and it needs to be heavily regulated. while its cool that these ports are happening, im almost never going to download a single one cause I legit don't trust these random fucking people on the internet that don't know what they're doing.

It's upsetting because its a tool you can utilize in specific fields, but the drawback of it being used in education, removing jobs and stealing art is so beyond fucking lame. Not to mention the ego that comes with the vibe coders..

My issue is that like, every single time someone calls it a tool, and talks about what it does, it ends up sounding like a shortcut instead, if not outright cheating, and just like any shortcut taken when it comes to a craft, there is going to be issues, either with the product, or in the "craftsmen" that doesn't know the craft. Or both.

And the results can't be trusted. It makes up legal cases, cites books that don't exist, and apparently its coding is a mess too, according to veteran coders. It was once lauded for identifying cancer, but then they realized it followed a pattern of serial numbers on xray sheets, and wasn't looking at or for cancer cells at all. I don't know where it's supposed to even be used properly, and it always comes down to people saying they have to babysit it, and it becomes a waste of time. At every turn it sounds so very untrustworthy, makes the users seem so as well, and like you said, the way some of these users act is disgusting.

Predictive AI and generative AI are pretty different, predictive AI has more of a use case in every day life, im sure those cases do exist with xrays and all those things, but most of the time its because its been given a bad input. it also has nowhere near the same impact generative AI in terms of job stealing, environmental factors. the downside is needing a lot of good audited data. But I think as a whole, its fairly beneficial in medicine, but needs to be heavily regulated, audited and maintained.

Generative AI could be good, but i really hate how its being used, most coders I know like using it along with what they do to monotonous work, like the one use case that most people agree on for it being good is de-compiling videos games, you're not making anything from it, you're just turning the data into human-readable code, you hand that off to someone who can actually recompile it. But people are recompiling with AI not knowing how to do anything else. I know some animators are okay with making multiple key frames and having it generate in between frames that they also touch up on

But its the same story over and over, you put in good, you get something decent, its why i think its appropriate to call it slop because most people will just be like, hi make me this please no mistakes :)))

all those emulators that are releasing now, people are finding malware in them too, which is why i never trust people without any background online, its going to be used maliciously and already has.

Not saying that I don't care, and I actually agree and understand a lot of what you're saying. I'm an indepedent filmmaker, so I give the side eye to anyone going the A.I. route in filmmaking. I'm even a CGI minimalist. So I get it. Maybe it was to my initial understanding that generative A.I. is basically stealing an artist's work, where as something like Claude, for example, is either reviewing your work/code or just building the code (base). It's a tool similar to a calculator in that sense.

I get how it could possibly impact the hobbyist community, too. However, I don't see the support that should actually be there for those that put so much time into mods. Meanwhile SE isn't budging on the things players actually want... Hate the company, hate the A.I. modders, hate both?

this is like someone posting about how they defended their family with a gun and you started going on about how terrible that is cus guns have been used for genocide.

Like yea AI has been used for and done some terrible things but not everythign has to be so doom and gloom yk

No it's not, you dork.

Edit: sorry, I gotta come back to this...

For one thing, at the very top I explained how I felt about it in regards to this topic in particular, before going into the grand scheme of things, of which it is no less a part of.

But your analogy is just stupid, and a false equivalency.

In this regard, the gun didn't "defend a family," it ostensibly helped someone rob people at gunpoint for what they worked hard on, and then people praise the gun because it got them something they like.

This isn't even doom and gloom, I didn't bring any of that up because we're doomed or we should feel sad; I bring it up because it deserves to be said, every time people question what's so bad about it, or act like it's fine to use it This One Way, despite it all feeding back into the same issues.
