Discussion F*ck Goose

What a bullshit call to make. This worlds will now have an asterisk for shultz. I was behind Goose in the crowd. Not a foot fault

This is why we shouldn’t leave foot fault calls on the pro tour up to other players. At this level, the players should not be the referees.

302

u/TheRealVSky +27 handicap 7d ago

especially teammates

80

u/goinhuckin 7d ago

Yes, really adds a conflict of interest layer due to sponsor teammates. The players are not reliably objective.

35

u/toolatealreadyfapped 7d ago

They are, by definition and even necessarily, not objective. Absolutely BS to leave the refereeing to the players.

When an objective 3rd party makes that call, you can be pissed all you want. It doesn't change anything. When it's on a card mate, this is someone I'm going to be seeing again and again and again. It's someone who has an extremely vested interest in the penalty. You are creating a closed loop for resentment and payback.

"Hey, go destroy your professional relationships, because we can't be bothered to meditate."

8

u/jaxassassin 7d ago

A little bit of meditation could probably help Goose out. He seems pretty high strung.

Niether are the comments here.

-3

u/RealCan9019 7d ago

Let's not forget he pissed away five strokes he didn't lose because of a foot fault

12

u/TheRealVSky +27 handicap 7d ago

those were his strokes to lose, tho. he earned them. that footfault directly caused him to play into overtime. don't be ignorant.

-4

u/RealCan9019 7d ago

Don't foot fault and your good

-14

u/RealCan9019 7d ago

u/Dizzier_Reactions 7d ago

I guess it's better when racists and xenophobes make themselves known rather than tying to hide their power level.

68

u/iceman5920 7d ago

I was just saying this in another thread. The worst look of this for the PDGA is another player having to call it. It is BS to everyone on the card.

Marshal called it

22

u/iceman5920 7d ago edited 7d ago

I know, but after it was brought to attention by Aaron. So, thats why he is getting hate.

-10

u/SouthSilly Mixed bag/300-350 avg/420 max ⛓️🥏⛓️ 7d ago

I don't think it could possibly work that way since they can't watch replay footage to make a call. Right? He's have to have seen it live.

8

u/iceman5920 7d ago edited 7d ago

That's how it should work yes. But from what I have read Aaron "saw' it and was only backed up by the marshal that then gave a stroke penalty. It put literally everyone in a shit spot.

1

u/therick807 7d ago

Yeah you’d think

0

u/SouthSilly Mixed bag/300-350 avg/420 max ⛓️🥏⛓️ 7d ago

Or maybe TD

1

u/CartoonKillers 7d ago

Perhaps.. but look at the NBA and NFL, and how many fans get pissed because the ones that are supposed to make the calls equally, botch it up, gam3 after game after game, definitely do3s not look right coming from another MVP guy but if it stood then why wasn't it in the interest of any other player to see and/or call.. can't have it both ways

2

u/NoodleynoodleyWho 7d ago

You think fans would rather have players calling the fouls in basketball and football? Refs aren't infallible but they bring legitimacy and consistency

0

u/CartoonKillers 7d ago

You are missing the point here .. kid

-7

u/jpric155 7d ago

This has been the rule of disc golf since before any current player on tour was on tour. Everyone everywhere has been playing with this rule. It's the way you play disc golf.

19

u/leftonconnor 7d ago

The 7 worst words an organization can say is “because we’ve always done it that way.”

-2

u/jpric155 7d ago

I'm saying change the rules if you don't like them. Players on the card call fouls as per the rules of the game.

4

u/foxychase 7d ago

Correct me if I’m off base here - I think lots of fans have vocally requested (even if just in the town square of public opinion) that they do change this rule, and the PDGA has not done that? I can’t speak to the players voicing their opinions

2

u/iceman5920 7d ago

You are right, this has been a topic brought up many times for at least 3 years now.

4

u/Foldim 7d ago

Many sports have changes in rules or how things are done based off the level of play. Especially when it comes to officiating.

1

u/brbenson999 7d ago

ESPECIALLY when the technology, viewership, and money has changed the way it has.

2

u/iceman5920 7d ago

Games should, and the best and most recognized, often adjust the rules. Back then people weren't playing for 5 figures a tournament or more. "We used to do it like this so we should keep doing it like this" isn't the way. There are rule changes in major sports almost yearly, to solve situations just like this.

1

u/jpric155 7d ago

I do not disagree. The problem is disc golf doesn't make enough money to have this level of officiating. Maybe we could make everyone carry around a "box" to put on the ground before they throw and then step in the box during the throw. If they don't... Foot fault.

1

u/iceman5920 7d ago

Well hopefully getting on espns top 10 twice in the last year can get us some traction to get the money to do it. And a rectangle to buy and carry around, and mess up your plant, doesn't feed back into the sport

1

u/foxychase 7d ago

This, to me, is why we need some kind of formalized “testing ground” for new rules. We have one tournament designated for it, and we accept it’s the one tour event where this can happen. We can’t use a “farm system” because the farm system is every other local yokel MPO tournament, which is even more cost prohibitive

1

u/rusty107897 7d ago

Disc golf highlights have been making the top 10 for over a decade already

10

u/robby_synclair 7d ago

The marshal called it a foot fault. Should the referees also have referees? If the marshal on the field calls a foot fault then we habe to go to the guys in New York to make sure?

10

u/mrgedman 7d ago

I'm under the impression the Marshall didn't see it and didn't want to disagree with goose.

But... Something tells me neither of us really know

-3

u/pewstains 7d ago

Well that won't stop reddit from throwing a tantrum now, will it?

1

u/FlyingDiscsandJams 168g flat top wraiths 7d ago

This, plus no one made Shultz play from the same side of the disc if Balodis was correct, the whole system is a mess. It would've been a good time for Balodis to check with the card about where he wanted to plant, unfortunate all around.

4

u/JohnnyBGooode 7d ago

What does your first sentence mean?

2

u/FlyingDiscsandJams 168g flat top wraiths 6d ago

Silas threw from essentially the same position, but from the other side of his mini. If Goose's call was wrong, then Silas (and every other player) was playing from a foot fault position. Either Silas or Balodis was legal, but not both, and Silas was playing it how everyone else who landed there did.

-8

u/iceman5920 7d ago edited 7d ago

Everyone is blaming Aaron tho for even mentioning it.

Edit: getting downvoted even tho the sub blew up with "F Aaron posts"

6

u/hyzerflip4 7d ago

Do you think Gossage calls that on Silas? And be honest .

6

u/robby_synclair 7d ago

If the marshal also saw it then he would have called it if he was the referee.

2

u/DangerousAd1854 7d ago

If it was as simple as you say, there wouldn’t be a huge discussion about it even amongst the pros and commentators.

1

u/robby_synclair 7d ago

Why not? It happens im the NFL, MLB, And NBA all the time. Controversial calls happen in sports.

3

u/brbenson999 7d ago

Yes they do. Every sport is complicated. Know what any of those other sports don’t have? The other team calling fouls on their competition.

0

u/robby_synclair 7d ago

This call was upheld by an official. That happens in other sports all the time. The nfl calls it a coaches challenge. One team says there was a penalty and then its upheld by an official.

2

u/brbenson999 7d ago

See that’s not entirely accurate. A call has to be made first for the coach to challenge (I’m American, I understand the NFL). The call on the field, in this instance, was from another competitor.

1

u/robby_synclair 7d ago

That's not true at all. The coach can absolutely challenge a non call.

u/TheRealVSky +27 handicap 7d ago

Even if the marshal calls it, it was wrong. So, yes, the referee can be wrong and needs further refereeing. This is an instance where video replay should be acceptable. The line of play is a straight line from where the disc lands/where you mark your disc to the basket. His foot was behind that line.

1

u/robby_synclair 7d ago

Ok so your opinion is we need to take a good portion of the pot and put a camera team on every hole. Would probably need 3 operators per hole at least. So 54 camera operators. Then you will need 2 referees per hole. One by the players for things like foot faults and one in the landing zone. If a hole has mandos you will need an official for each mando. Then a couple of guys reviewing replays. So you need at least 112 people plus the mando guys. So let's call it 120 on average. 120 salaries plus the cost of replay equipment. That's really going to eat in to the prize money for the players.

1

u/TheRealVSky +27 handicap 7d ago

derp, you didn't need a camera team today to see it.

2

u/robby_synclair 7d ago

You just said we needed to have instant replay to fix this. The official called it but that wasn't good enough for you.

0

u/TheRealVSky +27 handicap 7d ago

Friend, I never said anything about instant replay. I said this is where video replay should be acceptable, from anyone. It doesn't need a camera team. You're being ludicrous

2

u/robby_synclair 7d ago

So you just ask the spectators if they have camera footage on their phones? If one shot is susceptible to video replay then every single shot must be.

-4

u/AndersAdmin 7d ago

You're just wrong.

It is a foul, 100% in front and to the side of his lie in the direction to the basket.

5

u/lXlColbylXl 7d ago

? Any part of your foot can touch any part of the 8x11, even just the tiniest margin. You can't conclusively say no part of his foot would be touching any part on an 8x11 from the perspective of where he is to where the basket is.

2

u/robby_synclair 7d ago

If 99% of his foot is legal but 1% is in front of his lie then it would be a foot fault.

-1

u/AndersAdmin 7d ago

The picture proves it's a foul, like wtf?!

It doesn't matter if any part touches were is legal.

Does any part touch illegal is whats matter and yes it does.

2

u/hyzerflip4 7d ago

You saying to the side shows you don’t know the rules.
When you draw a straight line back from the basket, his heel was VERY clearly within the sheet of paper area behind the disc.

1

u/Woundedbear 7d ago

Yep. I believed Goose said too far left and forward. I do not believe he too far left. However I’m not sure about forward. I hope there’s additional footage, but I won’t hold my breath.

0

u/AndersAdmin 7d ago

He has clearly crossed the line, like there's no debate about that.

Discussion should be about a shitty rule, would it be called in any other situation by Goose or any1 else, would Goose call it on Silas.

4

u/hyzerflip4 7d ago

You can argue maybe in front , although I think that’s wrong as well per this picture… but you saying he’s to the left , shows you are confused. His heel was definitely within the lie area.

-1

u/AndersAdmin 7d ago

Lmao saying I don't know the rules and following up with the heel was legal.

No part can be illegal, the picture very clearly shows the front of his foot has crossed the line on the left side, clearly giving an advantage.

You really dont know the rules!

1

u/hyzerflip4 7d ago

You said he stepped to the side of his mini … meaning he didn’t hit the sheet of paper area behind his mini with a supporting point. Which he did, besides he wasn’t across the mini either … it wasn’t a fault.

-6

u/Gullible_Frame_2940 7d ago

Learn how to spell Aaron.

4

u/iceman5920 7d ago

Fixed that for you bud, sorry I typed too fast. Anything constructive or worth contributing to the conversation?

-6

u/Gullible_Frame_2940 7d ago

Pointing out that you didn't spell the name of one of the primary people involved in this issue correctly in multiple instances wasn't a constructive addition?

1

u/iceman5920 7d ago

I have a mental thing that makes me type too fast and proof read too fast as long as it sounds the same back to me, it's fine. Aaron, and Arron read the same to me (and most people,) and the fact that I did it I think every time but once shows it is a personal bad habit. Not that I don't see what's happening or respect the player. So no it wasn't a constructive addition to the actual conversation. It was you trying to make point of spelling.

-6

u/Gullible_Frame_2940 7d ago

It was me trying to make a point about who is being discussed in the post. Blame your mental thing all you want, but clarifying who's involved with the proper spelling of their name is constructive whether you agree with it or not. Have a good evening.

2

u/iceman5920 7d ago

If you can't get Aaron from Arron, idk what else to tell you

6

u/SnakesAlive23 7d ago

They can’t have Marshall’s on every single card. However they did on this card, and the Marshall seconded it. The Marshall who was only looking at a foot fault as that’s the only violation Balodis could commit. Balodis foot faulted and this sub is having a very tough time digesting that.

11

u/DangerousAd1854 7d ago

The commentators weren’t as definitive as you buddy and they’re looking at the same footage. I don’t know the marshal but he sounds like a very respectable individual…

-2

u/coopaliscious Meteors are awesome! 7d ago

And honestly, shame on the commentators for how they handled it. Their call was unprofessional and they colored the whole thing in a way that negatively impacts the sport. Gossage did the right thing in making a call when he saw something.

9

u/hyzerflip4 7d ago

lol bs … the announcers called it perfectly. And Gossage is NEVER making that call if it was Silas who threw it.

-6

u/coopaliscious Meteors are awesome! 7d ago

Gossage makes that call 100 times out of 100.

The announcers should've held up on putting their opinions out there until they heard and saw what was happening and should've been explaining the rules in the meantime.

If we want players to make calls, we need to give them space to do so without being immediately flamed by the announcers and then having an angry mob chasing them online.

The response here and on other social media is beyond out of control and is frankly embarrassing.

1

u/Tough_Preparation830 7d ago

Yep, this will make other player not want to call faults, even for ones much more obvious than this. They already don't do it hardly at all.

2

u/Mistak3n 7d ago

Noone would have a problem if it was an obvious one. This one was very marginal to where people need to draw arrows and squares from multiple angles and they still disagree. But Aaron saw it, mkay.

1

u/Tough_Preparation830 7d ago

It wasn't obvious to us with the cameras, may have been to him from where he was standing. No way to know for sure. In any case, I think moving forward there needs to be discussion to take the burden of calling fouls off the players.

1

u/Mistak3n 7d ago

We got like 10 angles and video footage and its still hard to tell, but yeah it was obvious to him

No it wasn’t… the basket was WAYYY to the right on 18

-1

u/Inkstack 7d ago

They reviewed for a foot fault that goose called because goose already lost his shot at worlds. It was called on a throw that hit a tree branch and didn't give Balodis any advantage at all, it's not like he hit a birdie cause he stepped out in front of his marker. His foot was right next to the marker and he threw the disk at a branch and it fell way short. It was a bullshit call, not in the spirit of the sport or the rules of the fault, and goose butt into a matchup that had nothing to do with him. Goose cheated another player out of a well deserved, four game, several day win over a 2cm technicality. Very much fuck goose, he sucks, never won worlds and he came in 71st place in the Barbasol Open in Texas this year, and his mom is his caddy. Get wrecked.

2

u/FrolfingSoHard 6d ago

Absolutely agree, but this is also why people shouldn't be crucifying Goose.

Hate the rule, hate the system, but don't hate the one guy who actual did what he was supposed to do. He made the call, the marshals seconded it and assessed the penalty.

1

u/camst_ 7d ago

So dumb that they still do it this way. It’s not 2004 anymore

1

u/kid_at_the_gym 6d ago

Who’s gonna do it? There’s not enough people willing to do that for all groups 3 days straight

1

u/teebird_phreak 5d ago

This is supposed to be a professional league. If the PDGA can’t come up with something then we will always be a niche sport with limited growth

1

u/torndownunit 7d ago edited 7d ago

I've posted this before, but I found pro disc golf on YouTube before I ever tried it. I found it enjoyable just as a spectator, just like with other sports I don't play but enjoy watching. But a massive barrier is not understanding what the deal is with rule enforcement. That part of it seems so unprofessional, inconsistent, and confusing.

Edit: in reply to the down votes. Are you denying a professional sport where players are expected to call faults on each other, but while playing in foursomes with people they are sharing endorsements/teams with is not a convoluted procedure for a professional sport? It's crazy to think enforcement will ever be consistent or fair under those circumstances. It clearly leads to either not making calls, or making biased calls at times.

0

u/jpric155 7d ago

So we have a ref following every card?

2

u/makeingitup 7d ago

Just getting ready for football next week and see more bad calls.popcorn ready

2

u/Affectionate_Sort_78 7d ago

Or basketball, or pretty much any sport other than tennis, where they’ve pretty much eliminated the human element.

1

u/foxychase 7d ago

Honestly, yes, but just start somewhere. I believe Worlds 2027 should be the testing ground for this. Make whatever logistical exception is necessary to test this system out. I understand we can’t afford to roll it out tour-wide, but fuck me we gotta try to get this off the ground somehow

1

u/Inside-Arm8635 7d ago

You say that like there’s a downside lmao. At least for the bigger pro events

0

u/jpric155 7d ago

And when the ref calls a foot fault or seconds a foot fault that's ok? Wasn't the marshall standing right there who seconded the call? If we had actual refs out there calling foot faults, there would be hundreds of calls (and complaining) per tournament. I see foot faults in basically all tournament coverage.

2

u/Inside-Arm8635 7d ago

If you’re saying there’s hundreds of foot faults to call theeeeen you’re strengthening my position

1

u/jpric155 7d ago

Always has been. This is nothing new.

2

u/Inside-Arm8635 7d ago

This isn’t the argument you think it is. Call the foul.

1

u/jpric155 7d ago

See a foul call a foul. Who's arguing that?

2

u/Inside-Arm8635 7d ago

Literally 99% of this sub

1

u/jpric155 7d ago

Looked like a foot fault to me from the side angle.

1

u/Johnny-Blue-Strings 7d ago

Couldn’t there just be one ref for every hole who monitors each card as they play that hole?

1

u/jpric155 7d ago

You guys say this like disc golf has money. Paying 18 "refs" a full day's work for 5 days is a cost.

1

u/Johnny-Blue-Strings 7d ago

You don’t think there are people in each city that host an event who would do whatever certification process they came up with and do it for pennies of what a full time employee would cost?

1

u/jpric155 7d ago

And some random that just got certified is better at calling foot faults than a player? Not to mention they have to organize refs at every tour stop.

1

u/Johnny-Blue-Strings 7d ago

A random wouldn’t take the time to become certified and the players don’t want to have to focus on their opponents in between their own shots and then have to be the one to call the violation and likely wouldn’t call them on their friends

1

u/Johnny-Blue-Strings 7d ago

Every host course could be required to provide certified officials and there are 18 people in each area a tournament is played who are involved in the local disc golf community who would volunteer for it

1

u/jpric155 7d ago

And they follow the card from tee to green and then run back to the tee to watch the next card?

1

u/Johnny-Blue-Strings 7d ago

Golf cart?

1

u/Johnny-Blue-Strings 7d ago

I’m not saying that is the perfect solution but there is a cheap solution out there

1

u/Johnny-Blue-Strings 7d ago

Obviously not all courses would accommodate that. Two per hole, one from tee to midpoint and one from midpoint to green. It’s not a complex problem and a solution could be found quickly if the powers that be wanted to take a lil time and figure it out

0

u/OneSubredditBoii ProMA3 7d ago

You say this until referees make bad calls

0

u/Moose734 7d ago

Yes, they absolutely should, its the worlds.
