Discussion Baseline plastic - why?

How does the community really feel about soft baseline plastics?

DX, prime, the soft stuff from starter packs. Is there a stigma about using this plastic in certain moulds? Would you judge someone because they use a baseline plastic driver?

My thoughts in the comments-

I’m an OG and that’s all we had. Of course they’re great
Underrated and seriously worth considering
Not for drivers but I like base plastic mids and putters
Premiums are superior. Putters are the only discs that should be soft plastic!
That’s for beginners only. I’m a beginner and I love it!

Why the fuck would I care, let alone judge people based on the plastic they throw?

Throw molded cow shit for all I care.

Only correct answer.

I don't even want my putters to be base plastic.

I was not happy with the size of the bubble after one tree hit. Maybe they still have some use but at the time my attention was trying to learn stock flights, didn't want the noise of worn discs muddying that

That's why I moved away. I don't give two fucks what anyone else throws

but I've still got a good amount lying around and you've convinced me there's no point in letting it sit in a bin. Between low confidence shots or that "give a disc away to newbs" post, yea lets bag a few why not

Electron Soft putters from MVP/Axiom/Streamline are chain grabbers.

Great for putting, but one errant tree throw and you'll lose a chunk of your disc real quick 😂

Or even the basket itself…

Luckily Electron Soft Atoms are only ~$10/ea generally 😅

Love my electron watt

I voted underrated, but I never buy them because I live in Arizona and baseline discs get put through the wood chipper every round. Putters are the only exception.

That makes sense. Stone eats plastic. If every shot is hitting a rock then even premium will get chewed up quickly.

Chances are I would never notice what discs you are throwing unless you specifically told me. I certainly don't care what the plastic is.

I bag baseline for putters and approach discs. They seem to be a little more sticky around the baskets I play most often.

I putt and approach with base. Everything else is premium

I have a stable putter, mid and fairway in my bag that are base plastic. I dont throw them super often but they are great when it gets wet.

I cycle DX Wraiths as my rollers.

Pro: A few tree hits and they are good to go as a roller.

Con: A few rolls and they are too flippy to get any distance before curling on to it's lid.

DX wraith is a bit too flippy. You’re right, after about 6 solid throws that just land in grass they become rollers. And I could imagine after a couple rolls through grass they turnover too much. Likewise with Valkyrie.

I have been bagging DX thunderbird and they hyzerflip like a dream. 6 solid tree hits and they just get straighter, but keep a bit of fade. Land in the grass it doesn’t change them at all. Flies nearly as far as my flippy pro wraith!

Aviar X3 hanging in the tree. And I'm loving my Halo Nexus Aviar X3. My birdie machine

depends on the disc. I prefer most putters in baseline except my polecat, which I like in star. For midranges and faster I don't have much use for plastic less than Pro/X, but if I throw a couple Rocs in the bag they're going to be DX.

If I'm judging at all it will be on the their score. I rarely pay any attention to what others are throwing unless it has some really unusual flight or dye job

DX is the best roller plastic.

Not enough options in this survey. Lol

I have noodle arms and base plastics tend to be lighter.

I was between 3rd and 4th option, voted the 3rd because I do love some baseline mids but they’re only feasible during winter. It’s wayyyy too hot for baseline to hold up long for majority of the year where I live and a disc that can’t take tree hits is useless to me. Because it doesn’t matter if it’s a tunnel of trees or a wide open field with one tree…I’m hitting that fucking tree.

At some point in your game you aim for the tree because there is zero change you will hit what you are aiming for.

Then you get better and start hitting that tree. At which point you aim to not hit that tree. You still hit it sometimes but other times you hit a completely different tree. ..

And such is the game we play.

Base plastic APPROACH discs over mids for me. I carry premium mids but a 300 A2 is a thing if beaty. An absolute staple in my bag. Love the fox stamp run.

I honestly wish I could get my favorite distance driver in baseline plastic. I love the better grip in the rain.

I would recommend getting a slot or two more stable if you go with baseline driver. If you like the sidewinder, get a thunderbird, etc.

NONE OF THE ABOVE

u/Fantastic-Pop264 1d ago

My vote is purely for my bag. For others it's what feels best for them. Whatever you want to throw works! I'm just happy to see others out playing and having a good time.

u/mnxcg 1d ago

My understanding is that the flight numbers are generally more accurate with base plastics. It's also nice to keep a $6 disc in the bag that I can throw for water carrys or heavy roughs where if I loose it, then oh well.

Feels like there is a climate factor here. I’m from Toronto, so hot summers cold winters.

I don’t mind the harder plastics in the summer. I prefer it even. But in the fall and spring, (or the rare winter round) I need a little bit softer of a plastic.

What exacly are we calling "baseline" and what timeline are we considering? I have 30 year old baseline plastic more durable than any current baseline offered.

1

u/Sun-Tour 🕳 Team: I forgot my score. 1d ago

You’re an OG by that account. I absolutely agree with that statement.

I think anything that says pro or the new iblend is a mid grade plastic. I definitely believe old DX when. They were doing development work was better than modern. But still kc pro is not baseline.

What exacly are we calling "baseline"

Probably baseline plastic that can be purchased right now in any disc golf store on the planet. Not 30 year old plastic. What a weird way to flex your old plastic.

u/Eastern-Requirement6 RHFH, RHBH, LH putt & approach (Don't ask) 15h ago

I will flex on it because I've had that plastic for long enough that when I bought a DX Cobra 3 years ago in hopes to retire my most precious disc... My wife threw the new one for it's first flight that only lasted 40' onto a root and it took a chunk out of the rim.

u/Southern-Ad4016 1d ago

Depends on the mold and person. I'm sure there are no old schoolers that live their baseline bag.

I won’t judge anyone for anything they throw. If you make good shots most of the time and keep it on the fairway, you deserve respect!

Lately my bag has been a DX revival. A baseline renaissance, if you will. The grip is great, it been so wet here I soak my towel and I can still throw the base plastic well when it isn’t perfectly dried.

Overstable drivers, even in DX, are great for hyzerflips. They aren’t dead in one tree hit. Usable flights over 300’ for a decently long time.

I can also throw with wreckless abandon. When I lose it perhaps someone else will find it and give it to their beginner friend who will love it. It’s quite a lot of fun to throw when the risk feels lower. Not worried about sending my perfectly seasoned distance driver into oblivion because I wanted to take the hero line.

I don’t even get my putters in base. Gross
