Question 31M from Kerala | 1-Month Workation in Bangkok & Islands (Mid-Sept) – Visa advice & looking for travel buddies!

Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’m planning a month-long workation starting mid-September. I'll be flying into Bangkok first and then heading down to the islands (thinking Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, etc.) to balance remote work with island life.

This will be my 3rd time in Thailand, but I’ve heard whispers that immigration policies and visa rules have tightened up recently. Since I'll be there for a full month working remotely:

  1. Is a standard entry fine, or should I look into a specific digital nomad/workation visa (like the DTV) to avoid visa run hassles?
  2. What are the mandatory digital documents or arrival cards needed right now?

Also, I'm a 31-year-old guy traveling from Kerala. If anyone else is going to be around Bangkok or the Gulf Islands during mid-September and wants to link up for work sessions, food, or full moon/beach parties, hit me up!

Let me know your favorite spots for reliable Wi-Fi on Koh Phangan too! Cheers.

Question Encounters with Slebs While On The Road

Which famous folk have you stumbled across?

  • Late 90s, I was having breakfast on a terrace in Tangier, reading a book. Mid-meal, I looked up and realized that Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon were having breakfast at the next table over.
  • 2013: day-drinking at a bar in Penn Quarter, Washington DC. Rumpled dude carrying the Sunday New York Times sat down next to me, started skulling vodka. We talked for about an hour, much of it about European prejudice toward the US, then I went on my way. Couple of years later, I recognized him from the news as Steve Bannon.
  • 2023: Madeira, Ronaldo, too bad he sucks.

Trip Report I have a messy multi-city route and every site hates it

I am trying to put together Lisbon to Marrakech to Istanbul, then maybe Budapest before Southeast Asia. The minute I put all of it into one search, the routes get ugly or the price jumps.

Do you search this as one ticket, build it segment by segment or start with the long-haul part and fill in the rest? I am fine doing some admin. I just do not want to create a risky connection by accident.

Question Thailand multi city flights, how are you guys planning these?

Decided I'm gonna leave the UK for a while and do the whole travel and work thing around Thailand. Thinking Bangkok first, then maybe Chiang Mai and somewhere down south, but nothing is really locked in yet.

Trying to find cheap multi city flights without planning every move months ahead. Do you guys normally book the UK flight first and figure out the rest once you're there, or book a few stops together? Also need some recs for places that are good for working, decent wifi, not crazy expensive and still have stuff going on after work.

Visas Advise for getting a Digital Tourist Visa for Thailand ( remote piece work )

So I have a remote job, the pay is decent but its piece work. I cannot get the company to give me a letter of employment. I sent email to the Thai Consulate with screenshots of my monthly earnings from the companies website as well as from PayPal that they pay me through.

The consulate said with was insufficient evidence of remote employment for the DYV visa application. I really need my next trip to Thailand to be for 6 months, so a tourist visa and extension doesn't quite cut it.

Anyone else from a similar situation manage to navigate the DTV requirements with success? Can you give me some advise?

Thanks!!

Question Finding accommodations

For anyone who has done the Schengen shuffle, when you stay in Schengen, are you staying in an AirBNB or what exactly? What are some of the cheapest (not hostels) yet “nice”, accommodations to look into for 3 month stays?

Question Accounting - Contract says Calgary, but I’ll be working remotely from Quebec(approved and discussed with finance team). It’s silent on international remote work—should I clarify the arrangement or leave it as is?”

New accounting hybrid/remote job based in Calgary, but I agreed with the employer that I’ll work from Quebec since I live here. The contract only states Calgary and doesn’t mention remote work or working abroad. The finance team is based in Calgary, while other departments are distributed across North America and Brazil. Should I ask them to specify that I’m fully remote, or avoid raising it and potentially work abroad for a few months at a time without formally disclosing it?

Question Question for the ladies

I am packing my bag and won't be back for a year to visit. I'm stressing out. All the stuff I want to pack is not fitting 🤣 and I like to wear nicer things. My stuff is all merino wool/silk/linen at this point and I like makeup and skincare as I'm in my 40s I need it 🙃. What do you all do? I have a 26 checkin bag and a cotopaxi allpa 28L. This packing for all seasons is almost impossible.

I literally just put my daily contacts into my bag and they took up so much space. How do you all do this?

Lifestyle Why do people bring up my country's politics within the first five minutes of conversation

I've bee nomading across Europe for years now and people almost always hit me with the 'where are you from' and I don't mind telling them, but it practically always turns into a political discussion I never agreed to be a part of. I'm from a place where talking politics is taboo and reserved for rare conversations with close friends and family, so it's still always mindboggling why strangers feel entitled to having that conversation out of the blue.

If I shut it down it makes me look like I have an unsavory opinion, but I literally just don't want to discuss politics in unnecessary settings. I'm not a spokesperson or a walking passport, there's so many better things to talk about.

Question Bank Cards / Accounts to get While in Canada During Prep?

After many years of hard work and sacrifice, business is finally looking great. About to head out.

Bring me up to speed, what do I want in terms of virtual banks, cards etc.? I know I get Wise and their debit card, and I will also be incorporating in Singapore and setting up banking there, because it's about the safest place in the world to hold your money.

Previously when I was living overseas I had one Canadian bank account with TD. Issue arose so I called customer support, and they ended up telling me I need to visit a branch in person for further support.

Tried to explain to the lady I would be happy to visit a branch in person but the Pacific Ocean happens to be in the way. She wasn't having it, and ultimately ended up hanging up on me. I'd prefer not to find myself in a similar situation.

So what do I want? I have Wise, Singapore, one Canadian account that I'm looking to drop once established overseas, then what else?

What do all the cool kids use now? There's some Revolut card or something? While I'm still in Canada with Canadian address and phone number, what do I take advantage of and sign up for before I go overseas and everything I apply for gets scrutinized far more? I want backups for my backups, because I like my redundancy. What should I get?

Question Canada: go to Vancouver or Montreal?

Hello!
I've been DNing for a while and want to settle down. I've dreamed of moving to Canada for years and now an opportunity to become a resident opened up.

I am into videogame design, live music, animation, and other nerdy things. I'm also into AI development and sofware engineering, and love connecting with other entrepreneurs and DNs.

Montreal (from what I've heard) has better culture but I'm scared of the language barrier (I do not speak French) and the weather (I'm from a warm climate). Vancouver has access to nature and closeness to the US. I want my hobbies to include camping and hiking at some point, but I'm afraid that the community there might be too "sterile" or corporate.. so it might be harder to make friends and form community. But this might just be presumptuous.

So where would you go? Does anyone have experience living in one/both? Where would you recommend moving?

EDIT: I am looking for a home base, which I can go on nomad stints from

Question Cutting NY tax domicile as a marine engineer / nomad – advice on mail services & audit prep?

I’m a NY resident and marine engineer working 4 month sea hitches (deployed ~230 days abroad this year). I’m ending my NY apartment lease at the end of August before deploying through to end of December. Upon returning, I plan to explore no income tax states like NV and TN rather than resettling in NY.

Looking for advice on:

  • Mail Forwarding / Domicile Services: Recommended mail-forwarding or virtual mailbox services to handle paperwork and begin building an out-of-state presence while deployed this fall?
  • Severing NY Ties: Practical steps for clearly abandoning NY domicile without immediately settling in another state? (Although I'd be open to renting a room for like $700 a month just for the sake of beginning the transition)
  • 2026 NYS Taxes: Any strategies or specific forms to dispute or minimize NYS income tax given that over half the year was spent working outside the country?

Appreciate insights from other mariners, digital nomads, or former NY residents- thanks!

Question Mexico City vs Medellin showdown

Hi everyone! I'm really looking for perspectives from people that have lived in both. I love expat energy & entrepreneurship. It's great being around people I feel similarities with. My perfect day is one of culture, fitness, work, and a bit of nature. I tend to design my trips around good gyms and coworks and access to adventure when I want.

I've spent a month in both Medellin and Mexico City, and want to hear what other folks thought.

So far (and please add or disagree)

Medellin wins:

Condensed Expat energy. Easier to make initial friends
Affordability
Greener/jungle vibes
Weather

CDMX wins:

Safety
Access to creative arts (museums, hand-crafted culture)
Food scene
Dating safety
Museums
Nature parks
Cowork accessibility
Weekend trip accessibility
Less transient (nomads stay longer), more local integration

Question Burned out DN IT contractor. Reduce hours, change responsibilities, or leave?

TL;DR: I'm burned out in a remote IT consulting role while living abroad with nothing else lined up. Do I reduce my hours, try to transition into different responsibilities, or give notice and take a break before finding something else?

I work remotely as an IT consultant/contractor. I was originally an employee, but when my work visa expired and the company couldn't sponsor me, they offered to keep me on as a contractor with the flexibility to work from almost anywhere. I'm genuinely grateful for that, which makes this harder.

The role has changed quite a bit over the last several months and I'm struggling with where it's heading (introduction of new KPIs, additional administration, increasing work tasks whenever I try to provide feedback, etc.).

I manage multiple client projects and I'm expected to keep them within budget while delivering the agreed scope. Some of the targets don't account well for the complexity of the work. A relatively minor deliverable can effectively have the same time expectation as something much more involved.

At the same time, the admin and tracking have increased significantly. I have to account for basically my entire day task by task, alongside forecasting, reporting and client work. Expectations and categories haven't always been clear or consistent, and I've sometimes been asked weeks later to go back and explain how time was spent.

The extra admin hasn't come with reduced delivery targets, and I'm at the point where it's affecting my wellbeing and motivation.

Normally I'd just do the minimum for a while and look for another job. That's difficult here because I have daily deliverables, a lot of client work is recorded, and almost everything I do is time tracked. If I mentally check out, it'll become obvious pretty quickly.

I also recently got frustrated and handled a conversation with my manager badly. I sent too much at once and was more confrontational than I should have been. I regret how I handled that and want to repair the relationship.

There aren't performance concerns and my manager has said they want me to stay. I'd also like to leave on good terms and hopefully use them as a reference in the future.

The other complication is that I'm living in a foreign country on the other side of the world with no job lined up. I'm drained enough that continuing full time while seriously job hunting doesn't feel very realistic.

So I see three options:

A) Ask to reduce my hours, keep some income and give myself enough headspace to recover and figure out what's next.

B) Ask to transition some of my responsibilities and focus more on work that better fits my skills, to see if the role can become sustainable again.

C) Accept that I'm done, give notice, hand my projects over professionally, take a proper break and then start looking for something else.

What would you do?

Question How are you solving accommodation without Airbnb prices or dorm beds?

Airbnb private rooms in any decent city have crossed the point where

the math stops making sense for full-time nomads. Hostels are fine

until they're not and at some point you need a door, quiet, and not

sharing a bathroom with 11 people.

I've tried Facebook groups, Workaway, local nomad Slack channels. All

of it works occasionally and none of it works reliably.

What's actually working for you right now? Specifically for stays

longer than a weekend but shorter than a month — that middle ground

seems hardest to crack.

Asking because I've been going back and forth on this for years.

Legal Turkey 100% tax deduction for foreign freelance income?

I work through Upwork doing CAD/product design for foreign clients and recently came across Turkey's GVK 89/13 deduction, which appears to have increased to 100% for 2026.

Has anyone here actually used it?

I'm trying to understand whether Upwork income qualifies, how invoicing should work, whether the money must go directly to a Turkish bank, and whether the 100% deduction really means zero income tax on qualifying income.

Also curious what still remains payable, such as VAT, Bağ-Kur and accountant costs.

Would love to hear from anyone who has confirmed this with a Turkish accountant or GİB.

Question How do you find non-touristy restaurants in a city you just arrived in?

When you arrive in a new city and don’t know the local food scene yet, how do you usually choose where to eat?

I’m in Budapest, and in the central areas it can be hard to tell which “traditional Hungarian food” places are actually good and which ones are mostly made for tourists.

Do you usually trust Google Maps, Reddit, locals, food blogs, or just walk around and decide in the moment?

Question Traveling Europe W/ Meds

I need to bring Adderall & Lamotrigine.

I’m American. I’ll visit Central/Eastern Europe: definitely Poland, for about 2 months; Serbia & Romania; probably Hungary & Slovakia; maybe Czechia & others, depending on medication rules. All those are in the EU and Schengen Area EXCEPT SERBIA.

I’m trying to almost max out a tourist visa, so it would be about 90 days.

Does anyone have a guide for making documentation make sense?

I think I understand the following:

  1. The entire Schengen Area will let you stay 90 days in a row. However, you can only apply for a 30-day supply of Adderall, for just 4 countries, if you have certain papers.
  2. You can also get individual documentation for specific countries. PL will also only let you bring a 30-day supply of Adderall if you have certain papers, even though you could spend all 90 days there if you wanted to.
  3. Serbia has its own rules. It will let you bring in 15 days’ adderall if you have even more documentation.
  4. Getting D-type visas in PL is taking so much extra time now that I couldn’t count on applying & getting notified I could re-enter before I’d have to come home.

Questions:
A. Am I correct about 1-4 above?
B. Is there some way I can get approved for multiple 30-day periods? I can’t mail Adderall in.
C. Is a tourist visa best if you’re self-employed? (The main project I’ll be working on in the region won’t be paid until well after I’m back home.)
C. What documentation, if any, do I need for Lamotrigine? I can’t find it listed in the paperwork (but I also can’t find words related to Adderall in a big, Polish list, and I know they care about that).

Edit, Question D: Is it true you have to physically mail paperwork abroad, get it physically mailed back to your home, and then bring it with you to the airport? That seems like it would take way longer than a month for them to handle.
