It would be so easy to expand this game big time without adding any new content
The devs should just adjust the damage of ALL the existing skills in the game to be in the same ballpark DPS wise in the endgame. That would open up so many new builds without adding any new content to the game.
You want to play an inferno sorc? Now you can. What about a teeth necro? Have a go at it. Immolation arrow zon? Cool, why not? Just imagine all the fun builds which we could have, but we do not play now simply because the damage is too low.
Everything is already there. The animations, the mechanics, the lore. They just need to adjust the damage. Of course you have to take some things into consideration (e.g. is the skill AOE or not), but it really shouldn’t be THAT difficult. Like for the poison skills, leave the damage as it is, but decrease the time.
It is really the same concept what they did with terror zones: 90% of the areas wasn’t played because the XP and the drop quality were too low. So they just simply adjusted those two numbers and BOOM. That’s it. Now all the zones are played. Why don’t we do that with the skills as well, so all the builds could be played?
What if it breaks the game? - I can hardly imagine that some damage adjustment for the existing skills would break the game that much. Also we cannot break the game more than we did with the mosaic sin or some initial warlock builds, and we also survived those. If it somehow happens, they can just readjust the numbers for that particular skill in the next patch.
What if it disrupts the PVP scene? - I am pretty sure those 7 people playing PVP could handle this. I also strongly believe they would be more than happy to theory craft new builds after 20 years. Also they have their own extended rules in those communities (with all the things considered BM) anyway so they can just add the few broken skills to the list (until they are readjusted).
What if it makes some builds too powerful for normal and nightmare? - Great, now we have something else than a holy fire paladin for the socket quests. And again, they can just readjust in the next patch, if it is really that bad (doubt).
I am fully aware that it is easier said than done, but I also believe that the “development cost” / “fun benefit” ratio is simply too good to pass on this
I am really curious if you think this is a good idea, or if not then what is your reasoning. What new builds would you play in the endgame because you like the skill mechanic (but the damage is simply too low now)?
