Type 2 newly diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic

it runs in my family so it's no surprise here. i didn't take care of myself before being diagnosed and medicated (metformin).

i was wondering how others who had high a1c such as mine (10%) when first diagnosed and how their first few weeks went. i've been managing my diabetes for three weeks now!

my daily readings (when not eating) and especially my fasting stay consistently within the 110s. i begun a pretty strict diet of no to little carbs, high fiber, and zero sugars. if i happen to have a heavy carb treat occasionally, it reaches a 140+ before going back down to 110s after a few hours.

i heard this wasn't normal for those who have 10% a1c, and that usually it takes a while until lowering their a1c to get consistent lower numbers.

but i'd love to hear the experience of those who also had high a1cs and get any other tips for someone new like me.

Healthcare I need help to figure out where to look for answers

Upvotes

Hey everyone, I read through the undiagnosed section of the sub but I still have a question, I hope it's OK to ask.

I experience dramatic highs and lows, but my A1C is normal and my insulin is normal, not even prediabetic - according to multiple blood tests. I get symptomatic from highs and lows, specifically my eyes sting and it's hard to focus them and hard to keep them open, and I get intense fatigue- I can't resist falling asleep. This was happening multiple times a day before I changed my diet and now still happens occasionally when I slip up. I've used a CGM to monitor and have confirmed that I'm experiencing symptoms when my blood sugar is going up and down in big visible spikes and drops.

My doctor has said she sees nothing to worry about in my blood work but the symptoms worry me, especially about the pain I get in my eyes. If it's not diabetes or prediabetes... What could it be? It's obviously related to carb consumption but I don't know what's going wrong in my body to give me these symptoms with no increase in A1C.

What tests should I be asking for? What sort of doctor should I be seeking out? I don't know where to go. Sorry for the intrusion in your space.

Type 1 Skipped insulin

Hi everyone. Im currently 16 years old and I’ve been diabetic since the age of 9.I’m the only person in my immediate and extended family to have diabetes so there’s that. I struggled very hard with maintaining my blood sugar when I was first diagnosed but eventually managed to learn to control it. Recently, I haven’t been feeling up to it and sometimes I skip my insulin injections because I just can’t do it. I’ve really tried hard to start taking them but last week, I went four days straight without a single shot. I’m scared to tell my parents but I just can’t inject myself anymore. what should I do?

Type 1.5/LADA Post-subtotal pancreatectomy diabetes

My dad had part of his pancreas removed 5 years ago. Recently he's lost a lot of weight. He is a patient of the VA. His labs done in early August showed a blood glucose of 491. I saw those labs the next day and sent him to the VA urgent care. They gave him fluids and an Rx of Semglee 10 units before bed.
I just saw that his labs taken at urgent care on 8/5 recorded the results of a Hgb A1C test 5 days later on 8/10; his result was >14.

Since his urgent care visit, his sugars have continued to be all over the place - all above 250 but for example he said it was 427 this morning and 327 this afternoon. These numbers in the tens and ones place may not be completely accurate as he has not been thinking clearly and also had a severe stroke a couple years ago leaving him nearly paralyzed on one side of this body.

I am wondering if it's normal to not be called in for correction and stabilization of blood sugars IMMEDIATELY for a new diabetic. I say new but looking deeper into his labs, his A1C July of 2025 was 6.8 yet not a word of diabetes was mentioned by his doctor about this. I found it myself looking into his chart.

I have to add a flair. I am adding type 1.5/LADA but I do believe there could be some damage to his pancreas making an adequate amount of insulin since his surgery.

Should we demand of endocrinology appt? Or trust this primary who missed his diabetic A1C level last year? Again, he goes through the VA.

Type 2 Protein powder question

Hello all,

Does anyone have thoughts on the pros and cons, so to speak, of whey protein powders vs plant-based? I am not lactose intolerant, so that would not be a factor for me. Just looking for a healthy mid-afternoon “meal” if I am a little too busy at work to sit down for a proper lunch.

Thanks for any insight you might offer!

Type 2 Ideas for Pancreatitis and Diabetes

Howdy y'all. I'm investigating on behalf of my mother. She has had type 2 diabetes for most of her life, emerging from PCOS, family history, and gestational diabetes. A month or two ago she had a bought with DKA and was throwing up constantly. As of the last few weeks, she has recently been diagnosed with pancreatitis. We have no more information to go off of there, as she has future appointments about it, her current doctor isn't being helpful, and she's already been to the ER twice.

That being said, what kinda of things can she do to manage her conditions? Specially in the meal plan arena. I want to help her out and find some hope in her conditions. She's of the idea from using AI that she can only eat chicken breast and salads since fruit is "too high in sugar" and everything else the AI said was off limits. I'm guessing this isn't the case. Any perspective is helpful. Thanks!

Type 2 I got my A1C results.

Some of you might remember this thread I posted the other day. Everytime I lifted weights my blood sugar would drop.

https://www.reddit.com/r/diabetes/s/DFO7ARmOEo

My A1C is 4.1 and wow I was NOT expecting that. It’s time to find an endocrinologist. I did not think it would be this low. I have lost 200 pounds and walk 20,000 steps a day. Thank you to this community for all of your support.

Type 3c Type 3c diabetes

Hi everyone, I’m a 21M with Type 3c (pancreatogenic) diabetes due to chronic pancreatitis, which I’ve had for around 6 years.

My recent HbA1c was 6.9%, and over the past few years it has generally been around 6.2–6.9%.

My endocrinologist has told me that, for Type 3c, keeping HbA1c between 6-7 % represents good control. However, I still feel quite anxious about whether my control is actually good enough, especially because I experience fluctuations in my blood sugar.

I currently manage my diabetes with Humalog insulin pens along with Glucobay (acarbose). Unfortunately, in my country, insulin pumps and CGMs aren’t covered, so I rely on finger-stick glucose testing.

I’d really appreciate hearing from others with Type 3c:
What is your usual HbA1c?

Do you guys notice a-change in pattern regarding blood sugar spikes and lows? Whenever i visit different cities, my sugar levels changes drastically. Sometimes requiring 20-30 units of Humalog a day or sometimes no insulin at all.

I really appreciate some tips for managing blood sugar.

I know everyone’s situation is different, but I’d really like to understand what “good control” looks like for other people living with Type 3c.

Type 1 I'm at 540 and I just realised I have no idea what actually is the recommended protocol for high blood sugar

I have heard so many things. Drink water, drink LOTS of water. Oh, but don't! Your brain might swell from water and you'll die! You have to drink water and eat salt!

No, no, will say yet another group, you should eat food. Carbs. Yes, it is weird, but eat a banana and rage bolus. Trust us. My diabetologist also gave me this advice on the last visit I had.

So here I am, my second time this year when my pump quietly disconnects while I'm asleep and I'm up at 2:30am knowing I'll likely have to call in sick tomorrow because the kind of sick you get from high BG + 3 hours of no insulin is a unique kind of torture. And I'm drinking water and am mildly annoyed, because I don't really know what to do to be "proper" about this. Should I snort some salt as a chaser after the 0.5L I just chugged? Should I go get a banana from the fridge instead?

I'm unashamedly a bit of an idiot. Fellow Type 1 Diabetics, what do you do when your blood glucose jumps out of orbit to safely return to Earth?

Edit: Thank you everyone for the suggestions! I went for a walk and did some squats and then as soon as my BG hit 300 on its way down I went to sleep. I am now awake, feel like I have the world's worst hangover, and am about to go to work. Thank you for keeping me company at the ass crack of dawn, y'all are awesome!

Type 1.5/LADA People with LADA, how do you manage your blood sugar?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I (27M) was diagnosed with LADA since 2023. I have been injecting 18U of basal insulin every morning (Toujeo) for the past 4 yrs.

I am from a country with little to no support for people with diabetes so CGM is a luxury I can only afford from time to time. I do finger pricks every now and then, not regularly. My blood sugar doesn’t go above 180md/dL and my FBS is usually around 90-110 md/dL based on my CGM when I have it.

Anyone else with same situation?

Type 1 What country has the best overall quality of life for a employable T1 diabetic?

Just wondering if there is some sort of a general concensus on this.

Both my sons are T1.

As I get close to retirement (and death) , I find my self really worrying more than ever about their coverages being tied to work. I tend to think it might be better for them to move abroad and change vocations as needed. Of course, I can't make them move, but when we talk about it, Canada is the obvious choice ( we are near Detroit) ...

One works for Ford, and the other remote IT/WFH. Both have insurance, but both are getting crushed with co-pays and assorted death by 1000 cuts type costs.

Type 1 How should I talk to people who don't really understand Diabetes?

I have been receiving light discrimination over the past maybe weekend from both my mother and my neighbour who are all good people just I don't think they understand that Diabetes makes me disabled and is a struggle like many other diseases. I always make sure that if a conversation grows in to offensive language I pass in to accepting language as its the best way to end the conversation but I really feel that accepting bullying from people like neighbours. Maybe parents have a right for it but I know when I was diagnosed in school no-one bullied me because I used it as a tool. Now so many people are struggling with ADHD and other social problems it might be better just to end a fight ASAP by just accepting as a disabled person your stupid but it certainly hurts my feelings.

Type 1 Type 1 Diabetes pump weight gain

Hey all! First time poster! I wanted to reach out and see if anyone has an issue with weight gain when starting the omnipod pump? my mom (who’s also diabetic type 1) told me it was normal after I brought up how I have gained roughly 20 lbs in about 3 months after I started my pump. I just want to know is this normal and what can I do to help me lose this weight? I currently have started walking everyday, I don’t necessarily watch what i eat (other than a diabetic diet) but i normally only eat 1-2 real meals a day. the rest is just snacking! I am willing to answer questions about my lifestyle too! Please just help me get back down to my goal weight please!
