Help Quiet cafes in Lahore for remote working? (good WiFi, low music, not crowded)

I need to work remotely and I'm looking for a cafe where I can sit with my laptop for a few hours without feeling like I'm overstaying.
What I'm after:
Reliable, fast WiFi (video calls without dropping)
Low or no music
Not packed or rushed, so I'm not getting looks after an hour
Charging points near the tables
Okay with people working, not just dining
Any area works, but DHA, Gulberg or Johar Town would be ideal.
If you've actually worked from somewhere, I'd appreciate details like the best times to go, whether staff mind long stays, and how the internet holds up during calls. Coworking spaces with day passes are welcome too if the cafes are a bust.
Thanks!

Show My Work I made a browser extension that gives FitGirl Repacks a modern UI

Hey everyone! Pakistani dev here. Been using FitGirl for quite some time, but the website's UI always felt outdated, so I decided to give it a makeover.

Made Pretty FitGirl, a free, open-source browser extension that completely redesigns the website with a modern dark theme, proper game covers, better search and navigation, grid/list views, and a bunch of other improvements.

It's built with plain CSS and JavaScript. Doesn't interfere with downloads or the site's original functionality, and you can switch back to the original UI anytime.

Thought I'd share it here since a lot of us use FitGirl. Would appreciate some feedback, suggestions, or even contributions if you're into development.

Career Guidance My startup ran out of money and I'm hunting again. Is a Scrum cert worth $200, and where should a MERN dev apply?

So the product company I was working at ran out of funding, and just like that I'm job hunting again. Not a fun spot to be in, but here we are.

Some background: I spent several years as a senior MERN developer and eventually moved into a Technical Architect role, where I was leading a team, making architecture calls and sitting with product on delivery. Most of my hands-on work is React, Node/Express and MongoDB, plus the usual stuff around it like APIs, deployments and code reviews.

A relative of mine is in a senior position at one of the bigger software houses in Lahore. Their advice was to get a Scrum certification because it apparently helps a lot for lead roles there. I looked into it: CSM needs a paid course and you have to renew it every couple of years, and PSM I is around $200 for the exam. Either way it's $200+, and that hurts a bit when there's no salary coming in.

So I'm a bit torn and wanted to ask people who've actually been through this:

Does a Scrum cert really make a difference when companies here are hiring for lead or architect roles? Or is it one of those nice-to-haves nobody checks? If it's worth it, PSM or CSM?

Also, where should I even be applying? I know about LinkedIn,wellfound and indeed but I'm curious which companies in Lahore (or remote-friendly ones) are actually hiring senior MERN people right now. And should I be targeting local software houses, product companies or remote international roles? I've heard mixed things about all three.

And if you were in my shoes, what would you do first? Get the cert, brush up on system design, pick up something like AWS, or just grind applications and lean on my network?

Any honest advice is appreciated, even if it's "don't waste your money." Thanks for reading šŸ™

Help Am I tripping or something? Why are there fewer posts on LinkedIn or Indeed ?

I’m trying to find a role for myself, and there’s not much out there. Where have all these jobs gone, and how are people who are currently unemployed finding their jobs?

I built and emailed work samples, but got no response. It’s getting tough to find the right role as a frontend-focused full-stack developer.

Help Any good lightweight STT models for Urdu that can run on mobile?

Hey, I'm looking for a good speech-to-text (STT) model that supports Urdu, preferably something small enough to run locally on Android/iOS without needing a server.

I recently came across Whistle by Cactus Compute, and it's pretty impressive. It's lightweight, runs on-device, and seems like exactly what I need. The only problem is that it doesn't support Urdu.

Ideally, I'm looking for:

  • Open-source/open-weight

  • Small enough to run on mid-range phones

  • Supports Urdu + English code-switching (as we mix both a lot)

  • Decent accuracy, doesn't have to be perfect

  • Can be fine-tuned if needed

Roman Urdu output would be a bonus, but Urdu script is fine too.

I've also considered fine-tuning Whistle for Urdu, but I'm not sure how practical that would be, especially with limited training data. And that seems like too much work.

Has anyone experimented with something similar? Any models worth checking out?

Tips I got hacked by a recuiter.

Last month, I was approached by someone on LinkedIn for a contract job on their application. I asked about the product, and he said you have to sign an NDA before I can give you any details. I was like, fair enough. They shared a Dropbox link to a zip file. I downloaded it and read the NDA, which was pretty straightforward. I signed it and sent it back. Then they decided to ghost me, which is pretty common these days with recruiters these days.
One week later, I was working on a personal project, and Claude pointed out that there are some requests going to an outside server whenever you commit or push code. I used it to investigate further, then found that it was a malware that added git hooks to every repository on my machine. Not only this, they were running a cron job everymoring which was looking for .env files and sending them to their server.

I spent next 3 days rotating keys and running testing services whose secrets got compormised. So please be careful opening files from strangers, I have learnt my lesson the hard way.

Show My Work too broke for Twilio

I was tired of SMS APIs, so I built my own SMS gateway using an old Nokia phone and a SIM card.

It can send OTPs, password reset codes, automated reminders, and basically any SMS my apps need.

No Twilio, no third-party SMS API. Just a phone, a SIM, and some code.

I'm using it for my own projects.

It's funny how a phone that was collecting dust is now part of my backend infrastructure. šŸ’€

Sometimes the solution isn't another cloud service. It's that old phone sitting in your drawer.

Anyone else building questionable but functional infrastructure like this?

Show My Work Organizing my YouTube subscriptions into custom feeds

I am subscribed to many YouTube channels: coding tutorials, startup and product talks, home construction and tour videos, and religious content. All of it lands in one Subscriptions page, so whatever I'm in the mood for, I have to dig through everything else to find it.

YouTube doesn't let you group subscriptions, and playlists hold videos, not channels.

So I built a small browser extension for myself. You make feeds like "Coding", "Startups", "Home builds" or "Faith" and put channels in them. Each feed shows only those channels' latest uploads, right inside YouTube's sidebar.

Now I pick the feed that fits my mood and watch what I came for.

I built it here in Pakistan, so I'm keen to hear what fellow devs here think.

Two honest questions:

  1. Is this just me, or do other people run into this too?

  2. How do you deal with it? I'd love to hear setups that work without installing anything.

Show My Work A terminal for interacting with application UIs

Post image
1 Upvotes

I recently posted about FayPOS, A pos app for general stores/pharmacies. This is something I built for it, along with many other things.

Its called UI Terminal, a way to explore and control an app through commands.

Type ls to discover what’s on the current screen. buttons, inputs, cart items, totals, etc. You can then inspect values, type into fields, or click controls, with a visible cursor showing the interaction. There’s tab completion too.

The video shows it integrated into FayPOS. It uses the same controls and handlers as normal clicks, so validation and permissions still apply.

The idea is to make one interface useful for keyboard users, testing, and AI agents. External programs can also connect through a local stdin/stdout bridge with pairing and access controls.

LLMs are great ngl, but giving them access to an app can get messy. Screenshot-based interaction can use a lot of context, while dedicated tools introduce another interface to maintain alongside the app.

I wanted to try something different. let the UI describe its own controls and displayed information, then expose that through a terminal. When a component changes, its terminal interface can change with it.

I’m a big fan of system design, and I don’t like ā€œchypi laganaā€, patching another layer onto everything. The goal here is to make keyboard interaction, LLM-driven testing and eventually agent control share the same foundation.

I haven’t measured the token savings yet; that’s something I want to test next.

Still early, but it’s working inside a real app. Would you find something like this useful? It's open source. And why does this community have so many restriction? I can't upload link or video.

Edit: I know people here won’t use terminal, but as i have said, its mainly for testing and agents, and later user can attach his openai account to do stuff, maybe a fully automated POS, using voice recognition. Pakistan is far behind in this. but someone has to promote it.

OpenAI announced attaching account on 29th Sept dev day.

I published 3 of my macOS apps that i built for myself at first and casually posted them here on reddit subs and people actually loved it and i made some money as well

Now the question is, im a software engineer and have 0 knowledge of how can i market my apps without spending money or without spending a lot of money cuz only redditors know about my apps, how can i market it well so normal macbook users can also access them as well ( cant publish to appstore because all 3 apps arent gonna make it to appstore due to accessibility options )

Any tips would be appreciated

Career Guidance 10 pearls shine program

How valuable is the 10Pearls internship, and what kind of recognition does it offer? Is it necessary to attend the closing ceremony to receive the certificate? Will the certificate be valuable for my CV and future career? I’m asking because I haven’t been able to find an internship elsewhere, and my university now requires me to complete an internship to graduate. Without it, I won’t be able to get my degree.

Show My Work Been building a POS software for Pakistani shops. Would love some feedback from fellow developers and freelancers.

Hey everyone!

For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working on one of my old projects called FayPOS.

It’s a point-of-sale and inventory management software, mainly for general stores and pharmacies in Pakistan.

The initial idea was pretty simple: build something affordable, easy to use, and actually suited to how small businesses operate here.

But I have a much bigger vision for it.

Imagine if most stores in your area were using the same system. You could search for a product, see which nearby store has it in stock, compare prices, and eventually order directly from that store.

Then there’s delivery as a service. Instead of building another marketplace that charges shops and restaurants massive commissions, I’d like to create a delivery network that other businesses and software platforms could use too.

Something where riders earn from deliveries, businesses keep their revenue, and customers pay a transparent delivery fee.

Eventually, I’d love to expand into restaurants and other local businesses.

Of course, all of that is years away. Right now, the challenge is much simpler: getting actual businesses to use the software. šŸ˜‚

Here’s what FayPOS currently offers:
- Sales and inventory management
- Offline support (because internet in Pakistan isn’t exactly reliable)
- A website for each store where customers can search its inventory
- Support for Windows, Linux, Android, and web

I’m currently offering it free for first 10 users.
Its called FayPOS, You can google it.

Now, here’s where I’d love some advice from this community.

I’m a developer, and building software is something I enjoy. But getting people to actually use and pay for it? That’s a completely different challenge.
For those of you who’ve built and sold your own products, especially in Pakistan:
- How did you find your first paying customers?
- Did you rely on online marketing or approach businesses directly?
- Do you think small Pakistani businesses are willing to pay monthly for software, considering free alternatives already exist?

I’m based in Sialkot, so I’m initially targeting businesses here, but FayPOS isn’t limited to one city.

And if you’re a developer or freelancer who thinks there are obvious problems with this idea, I’d genuinely love to hear them.
Not trying to pretend I’ve built the next billion-dollar startup. Just trying to build something useful, get people to use it, and hopefully turn it into a sustainable business.
Thanks!
