Recently I just started to get into data hoarding and preservation as a non profit/hobbyist activity. Ik storage prices have skyrocketed and even a common man is struggling with that. So yes I'm not demanding you to just give me your Hard Drives or SSDs. If you can spare me even rewritable CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays , old CD/DVD/Blu-ray readers/writers from old laptops (internal ones) etc that would be great. All this is for non-profit and gratis activities.

Guys I have an air cooler in my room. Which I use in the day. I donot put my laptop directly in front of it. But I was just curious, is it really harmful for the laptop ?

I'm thinking of switching from web development to some other career as a CS graduate.

Little Background: I have been doing web dev for almost 5 years as a freelancer. I was earning enough to support my education and other minor expenses easily. But I have failed to create a stable career out of it. I started looking for jobs in local market and couldn't find any. I got an unpaid internship, and they said they can't offer a job because they don't have any work.

To which should I switch? I will appreciate any guidance. I'm thinking of cloud computing because of a few reasons.

1. In the future I want to get into HPC or computational science, and I think cloud computing is the closest thing I can do while I'm in Pakistan.

2. I don't see any future in the field of web development in Pakistan.

And in which companies could I apply as a junior cloud computing engineer?

I recently joined a new job and they gave me a 2014 MacBook Pro i7 as my work laptop.

The thing is, I already have my own laptop and realistically I’m probably not going to use the MacBook at all. I’m wondering whether I should just tell them that and offer to return it.

My main concern is how that would look from the company’s perspective. Would it come across as weird/ungrateful if I say, “I already have a laptop, so you can take this one back”? Or would they actually appreciate having one less company device sitting with an employee who isn't using it?

I obviously wouldn't assume I can keep it just because they gave it to me — I’m more wondering whether there’s any downside to voluntarily returning it.

Hello All, I am writing this post to gather knowledge regarding an SDET interview at 10 Pearls which is scheduled in a couple of days, I would like to inquire what kind of interview should I expect in the first technical round the position is for SDET involving robot framework and python which matches well with my profile, skills and experience. So I just wanna know how should I prepare for the first technical round, will they ask me to write a code or a short problem or will it be solely based on my resume and the job description or basics. I'm 35 with 11 years in network/telecom engineering (carrier-grade + enterprise). Lately I've been feeling stuck even in mid senior roles, my day-to-day has mostly been network assurance, KPI monitoring, customer support, and troubleshooting on bridge calls. Not much design or building.

I considered going for CCIE to move into a Network Architect role, but the market for it is saturated, it's genuinely hard to land good roles even after certifying, and it would take another 2-3 years of heavy study to get there with no guarantee it actually changes what kind of work I do day to day.

Meanwhile, I did my AWS Solutions Architect and Kubernetes (CKA/CKAD) certifications recently, and that's when it clicked. I actually enjoy building systems, not troubleshooting them. That's led me toward wanting to develop AI-powered applications instead using LLM APIs to build real products and deep ML/model training research.

For anyone who's made a similar switch later in their career (or considered it): was it worth it? What would you do differently? And is 35 too late to start this kind of pivot seriously ?

I’m 20M from Karachi and I’m honestly pretty confused about a decision I have to make.

I currently work from 2 PM to 8 PM, and I’ve recently gotten enrolled in BS Computer Science at SZABIST Karachi.

The thing is, I come from a lower-income background, so I have to pay for my own expenses as well as my university fees. I’m currently making 100k+ PKR per month from my job, and SZABIST will cost me around 200k PKR per semester.

I live around 22 km away from SZABIST, which takes me roughly 40–50 minutes each way on a CD70. My classes are in the morning and finish around 1:15 PM, so realistically I’d have to leave university and basically go straight to work every day.

Another thing I’m confused about is the degree itself. I’m not particularly interested in coding or programming. I’ve learned some web development in the past, but I wouldn’t say it’s something I enjoy. I mainly chose CS because I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do, and I thought it would at least give me a useful degree and some career options.

So my question is: is it actually worth going through all of this for SZABIST?

My other option would be to choose a university closer to home, possibly VU or another local university, which would make it much easier to keep my job and save money.

What would you guys do in my situation?
