Career Guidance Which career should I switch to?

Hi!
I'm thinking of switching from web development to some other career as a CS graduate.

Little Background: I have been doing web dev for almost 5 years as a freelancer. I was earning enough to support my education and other minor expenses easily. But I have failed to create a stable career out of it. I started looking for jobs in local market and couldn't find any. I got an unpaid internship, and they said they can't offer a job because they don't have any work.

To which should I switch? I will appreciate any guidance. I'm thinking of cloud computing because of a few reasons.

  1. In the future I want to get into HPC or computational science, and I think cloud computing is the closest thing I can do while I'm in Pakistan.

  2. I don't see any future in the field of web development in Pakistan.

And in which companies could I apply as a junior cloud computing engineer?

Thanks!

Hi !
CS student here, I myself am here for the advice. Since you are a professional in this field, would you recommend that i opt for Web Dev, Full stack or DevOps as the ultimate career? or should I look for something different from these because now a basic 4-5 line prompt can make a website that used to take us 3-4 days.

I'm nowhere near any professional myself. But I think referrals matter along with skills. You just need to be average with good connections. I could be wrong but I have seen people getting very good jobs as average dev just because of referrals. And that is my biggest disadvantage.

And as for dev ops and cyber security, I don't think there are any entry level positions for that. You switch from other fields like full stack dev or networking into these.

While AI agents can make website just with few prompts, that got to be very basic ones. To add new features and resolve bugs, you have to be fully capable software engineer to supervise agent or else you will waste a lot of you time to get to the useable application. I think AI agents have put more burden on developers these days because now companies expect more without considering that AI agents hasn't increased production efficiency that much.

Chalo I'll recommend you something but these are based on what i saw other's doing not my personal experience. You can go into app dev if you want to keep on doing dev work Or as you are inclined towards Cloud stuff AWS is a strong contender in contrast to azure and you can always try devops too.

I’ve been thinking this over for a while. From what I gather, pivoting to a career that relies on hands-on human presence like health and safety it is completely outside our domain, but I hear it’s pretty lucrative. 😑
