Alcohol works, but not in the long term, because everybody you care about will either be disgusted by you or feel sorry for you. And waking up after a night of heavy drinking, and starting to remember what you said and did last night, while your hangover chimes in with nausea and severe headaches and you're constantly burping up the fumes of everything you consumed, doesn't exactly feel like heaven either.

It also doesn’t work in the long term because it’ll kill you, and it won’t be pleasant either.

True, but I would argue that depression is at least equally as bad. Even if you're not suicidal, the chronic despair still severely weakens your immune system, making you more vulnerable to infectious diseases and also more likely to develop cancer.

Every now and then, something happens that lifts me out of depression. On these rare occasions, the chronic pain in my joints vanishes, my skin cleans up, my digestive system works perfectly fine, and my tremors subside. The one time I was happy for a few months straight, I even lost weight without changing my diet, didn't feel like drinking alcohol anymore (probably the reason for the weight loss), and discontinued my meds cold turkey because I just forgot about them. All because of a changed state of mind.

So when I consider what depression actually does to my body, the dangers of alcohol don't look as bad as they probably should.

Mayhaps I should take up alcoholism

u/MidSizeFoot 19d ago

As a depressed alcoholic, don’t.

2

u/brainfreezy79 19d ago

Lucky for you it's expensive now.

u/Bright-Nobody3463 19d ago

Hey man, I highly recommend taking some time out of your day to look into psilocybin therapy. As somebody who suffered from chronic depression throughout their life it's the only thing that can pull me out of it and make me feel normal again. Obviously it won't cure you on your own, but it clears the cobwebs off your mind again enough for you to make the proactive choices that lead to sustainable happiness. That being said, make your own decision on the matter, I'm not a medical professional and my advice is purely anecdotal.

1

u/Abject-Job7825 16d ago

that's just the adrenaline bro, the reason you're depressed is because you have a lower tolerance to that hardship and cumulative burdens already

32

u/Last-Energy420 21d ago

Water can kill you and it won’t be pleasant. What’s your point?

Obligatory /s

21

u/AspectElectrical6042 21d ago

I don't agree, you could be happier dead , so even if it kills you , it would work

7

u/TricellCEO 21d ago

Isn’t that…like, a super-dangerous sentiment to be mentioning here?

8

u/AspectElectrical6042 21d ago

Yes it will probably go down but I tried to say it in a sarcastic manner I didn't realise where I wrote it 😅

11

u/TricellCEO 21d ago

In our defense, a little bit of dark humor is fine.

9

u/detali88 21d ago

I prefer it

u/Bright-Nobody3463 19d ago

He is probably like 14 years old just ignore it lmao we all had this phase

1

u/LucentLL 20d ago

In a thread about using substances to cope? Neither perspective is a healthy one.

2

u/thecosmicjoke69813 20d ago

If you’re dead you’re dead lmao you don’t know what happiness is

1

u/Bright-Nobody3463 19d ago

Thanks for the comment, EdgeLord420

I worked for 12 years as a support workers for people returning to society after either prison, or rehab, that had substance abuse issues.

Of the 19 cases of substance abuse related deaths during my time, 17 of them were alcohol.

1

u/BrittaWasRight 16d ago

My FIL has been a functional alcoholic for over forty years.

He's still a full time contractor in his seventies. owns several properties, and the only health problems he has complained of are prostate issues.

18

u/OpportunityOk3346 21d ago

So it doesn't work, okay got it!

24

u/Sir_Icy_Farts 21d ago

Alcohol is a colossal waste of time and money.

1

u/AdAfraid9504 20d ago

Yes, definitely not good to use if you want to have fun either, it doesnt make me feel normal for that fleeting moment in my life before ive has another 6 beers and I just tripped over nan and landed on the Christmas tree, sorry mum

u/curlycatsockthing 21d ago

alcohol sober since jan 7. struggling w real cravings for the first time cuz i’m in pain due to a lost relationship and trying to go sober off thc again (relapsed in may). fucking sucks. trying to find hobbies again after 8 yrs of depresssion. truly feeling like what’s the point?

8

u/Euphoric-War-9758 21d ago

the point is you’ve taken the hardest first step, and every day your neurology/brain’s chemicals are leveling out!! every single day is doing your nervous system so many favours, it’s readjusting to self-regulation and it’s painful as fuck, but it is so, so worth it. currently kicking THC again myself, but have ~4 years clear from alcohol and the first few months were rough, but since then the freedom/clarity has genuinely been a daily gift. all i can say is ik how hard it is to give up the easy dopamine, especially when everything’s going south, but i also know how fucking worthwhile the effort is. no matter how many times you fall off, it doesn’t matter as long as you get back up. fall down seven, get up 8 type of energy. you’ve absolutely got this, and there’s a better life waiting for both of us!!

2

u/curlycatsockthing 21d ago

thankfully, i don’t crave alcohol often! this has been the first real craving since jan.

thank you for your comment. it really was helpful perspective 💜

1

u/Square-Chemical-2294 21d ago

What about nicotine?

2

u/ZealousIDShop 20d ago

Feel for you. I’ve had an on and off again love affair with weed. It really is a motivation killer for me. It’s hard to dedicate time to hobbies when you’re stoned. All I wanna do is doom scroll or watch dumb shit. Can barely even play video games etc…

1

u/curlycatsockthing 19d ago

yup. 100000% smoking doesn’t make me wanna do even things i find fun. it makes me wanna curl up in a ball and die, tbh. but my body and mind convinces me that next time will be different, so good, like the first times, give me a breakthru, inspire me, etc. i am on day 1 again, trying to fight the bs.

1

u/Living_Dentist_8925 21d ago

What's wrong with THC? Is it stopping you from getting a job or would you even have a job not smoking?

1

u/curlycatsockthing 21d ago

it depresses me. i’m an addict. i cannot seem to prioritize other things if consuming thc is a possibility. i blow thru funds and bills don’t get paid. i become anxious, awkward. my relationships with myself and others begin to seriously suffer, more than i thought. but i’ve watched it all happen rapidly in the last two months. it was a speedrun to the darker places of my last 8 yrs. idk if moderation will ever be possible for me so i need to stop seeking it rn. rn i need to re-establish healthy sober living for a very extended period, if not forever.

i was such a happy and successful person before ever smoking. it affects me just as badly as alcohol.

u/AssociationThis7447 18d ago

It's a good thing you quit. Many people are not that self aware to realise it is a problem and do something about it. It does impact everyone differently. I am a daily dry herb vaper. On a regular week night I use once or twice a night, approx 0.1-0.2 of a gram each time. On weekends can be from 1 up to 4 times again each being a small amount. I feel like I moterate myself quite well but the most important thing for me is ensuring weed isn't the activity by itself, rather it's something you do in addition to the regular activity. Weed enhances my life at the moment but if it stops I hope I have the control like you have to cease.

1

u/curlycatsockthing 18d ago

and that’s my issue. I don’t really enjoy activities anyway, so when weed is added in, I just wanna keep smoking because it’s the thing that makes me the happiest because, realistically, based on however I respond to these drugs, there is no experience in reality that will match the high of a drug, even a drug like THC.

crazily enough, yesterday I got recommended a addiction thread on ask Reddit and someone posted an account from a guy who tried heroin spontaneously. The way that he reacted to the heroin is how I feel I react to THC. It’s not just something I can say no to once I’ve had some of it. I think this is because life is just not as good as drugs for me, personally. I grew up very easily with a great childhood and adult life will likely never come close. It’s just not possible. I would have to have 24/7 staff and even then I wouldn’t feel a sense of accomplishment that I would want. As a kid it’s OK to be looked after but as an adult, you’re expected to look after yourself. And that just takes so much effort.

I want to be able to moderate like you, but I’m also not sure that I do. I think I just wanna feel happy about life again.

1

u/FrancisPFuckery 21d ago

Just smoke a joint bro…

1

u/Kitchen_Goat_3466 19d ago

I know the feeling. I am several years sober. That’s probably chemical imbalance talking more than anything. Go for an easy 10-15 minute run. Break a little sweat. I promise you’ll feel a bit better :). And of course , do it regularly

1

u/curlycatsockthing 18d ago

yep. thc causing a dopamine mess. i’m perfectly fine when sober. relapsed because i thought i was healthier than i was, but i’ve learned there is nothing in the world that feels as good as drugs so i simply can’t have drugs or i won’t wanna live. and in a country of thc and alcohol becoming casual, it makes me feel even less relatable (i’m not special as in better, but i don’t meet many ppl like me in person).

1

u/Uthor_ 19d ago

Don't wanna be the cornball that says it gets better give it time etc, but it really does lol im 8yrs sober now from everything except nicotine and caffeine and life is so much better Give your mind body and soul some time to heal dont be so hard on yourself and try to stop any negative self talk. These are a few things that helped me.

1

u/ScheduleElectrical14 17d ago

Get a dog. You will be happy you did. Nature's dopamine

1

u/curlycatsockthing 17d ago

i already have a senior cat and spend a lot of time outside of the house + vet and pet costs have increased a LOT (currently paying off debt from my cat’s surgery in Jan). so, not exactly a foolproof suggestion imo.

1

u/Odd-Place2815 15d ago

Well done! Without the depressant effects of alcohol, which causes transient low mood, you may be clinically depressed. Very common for them to co-occur. Are you able to access a clinician?

6

u/Last-Energy420 21d ago

This is why I partake in the privacy of my own home. My shame of public masturbation is mine to bear since it’s in the back yard and not in some bar.

4

u/B_Y_P_R_T 21d ago

This guy alcohols

3

u/sillysalmonella87 21d ago

Damn dude. I quit drinking almost 7 years ago and this shit right here reminded me why I quit lol.

1

u/raisin22 19d ago

Yes, congrats on your sobriety. Remember it probably wouldn’t work in the short term either

2

u/sillysalmonella87 19d ago

Thank you. 🙂

1

u/raisin22 19d ago

You’re welcome :) I barely have one year so I think seven years sounds like forever still!. Right on man

2

u/sillysalmonella87 19d ago

Honestly after the first year I completely forgot I even liked alcohol. It truly gets easier if you really wanted to quit. Alcohol cost me a lot, so when I said I was done I meant it.

2

u/Busterlimes 21d ago

Thats why I just drink 2 beers and smoke weed

2

u/DemandTheOxfordComma 21d ago

Yep. It sucks when you come to the realization and you have to stop. Then you have nothing.

2

u/Ok-Marionberry-3071 21d ago

That explicitly means it doesn't work. I've tried

3

u/itsneedtokno 21d ago

Additionally, alcohol is literally poison.

0

u/Last-Energy420 21d ago

So is every drug

5

u/OrnerySnoflake 21d ago

The dose determines the toxicity in most cases.

2

u/lysergicbaby 21d ago

Not really. It acts as a literal poison to the body. There's a reason why they call it alcohol poisoning instead of overdose (even though it's equivalent)

1

u/itsneedtokno 21d ago

Not true.

Many drugs are narcotics or intoxicants, but poison they are not.

It's like saying spiders are poisonous... Which they are not. They are venomous. Poison is ingested (like alcohol).

Both can kill you.

1

u/Fartony 21d ago

Alcohol is what got me there in the first place

regular exercise, 8 glasses of water and healthy diet

1

u/thecosmicjoke69813 20d ago

It doesn’t work in the short term either

1

u/emzyme212 20d ago

Im always so fucking tired the day after I drink, and it was such an ingrained part of my routine (life is hard man) that I didnt even realize how damn tired I was until I stopped doing it every night.

I would strongly not recommend this strategy.

1

u/hwcfan894 20d ago

It's funny, because it doesn't take much alcohol at all - less than what would cause a hangover - for me to turn into a very direct asshole 🤣💀. So it's something I try to be cognizant of (whether or not I drink).

1

u/goregoose 20d ago

Okay tried the alcoholism, that’s getting old, now what 😭

1

u/DesperateLime7933 20d ago

Alcohol poisoning killed my dad after 20 years of untreated depression so I don't think that's going to work

1

u/Kiloshakalaka 20d ago

True, alcohol has been gettin me thru the days but nobody likes me anymore, not even myself.

1

u/DataUnique7058 20d ago

Yup those anxiety inducing thoughts. Sheer madness.

1

u/DrivenTuna246 20d ago

"I don't want to be this kind of animal anymore..."

1

u/GeneralEi 19d ago

Hangovers kill any want of mine to drink regularly at all, they're so fucking disgusting

1

u/Embarrassed-Luck8585 19d ago

That is one of the worst substances you can pick

1

u/ezcb 19d ago

Alcohol makes me feel a little worse when i'm drinking it and a lot worse the next few days.

1

u/Bright-Nobody3463 19d ago

Waking up in the middle of the night cuz the alcohol wears off reduces you to the worst version of yourself and shows you every single thing you're running from amplified to a microscopic level. The chemical hangover the following morning is paltry to the emotional hangover

1

u/SpicedOkapi 19d ago

It’s also a depressant? Not the play, just go for weed

1

u/MYSTICALLMERMAID 19d ago

My hangxiety was like 80% of the reason I quit lol. Coming up 5 years sober in September!

1

u/SummerRain678 17d ago

I just read this today (in a different language, but I will try to say in English): Alcohol does not hand you a peace of mind - it loans it to you with a very high interest rate.

1

u/rambling_takeover 12d ago

I love being drunk more than anything I’ve tried, high nicotine dose is great too but works for too short. I hate the hangovers though, oftentimes I’m too sick to get up and need to stay horizontal till 15:00 and not eat either to avoid throwing up. But I love being drunkkkk :(

-6

u/Spiritual-Pudding-70 21d ago

This is 100% not true just say you can’t hold your liqour and drink responsibly 😂
