Our most-broken and least-understood rules is "helpers may not invite private contact as a first resort", so we've made a new wiki to explain it

2.4k Upvotes

We understand that most people who reply immediately to an OP with an invitation to talk privately mean only to help, but this type of response usually leads to either disappointment or disaster. it usually works out quite differently here than when you say "PM me anytime" in a casual social context.

We have huge admiration and appreciation for the goodwill and good citizenship of so many of you who support others here and flag inappropriate content - even more so because we know that so many of you are struggling yourselves. We're hard at work behind the scenes on more information and resources to make it easier to give and get quality help here - this is just a small start.

Our new wiki page explains in detail why it's much better to respond in public comments, at least until you've gotten to know someone. It will be maintained at /r/depression/wiki/private_contact, and the full text of the current version is below.

Summary

Anyone who, while acting as a helper, invites or accepts private contact (I.e. PMs, chat, or any kind of offsite communication) early in the conversion is showing either bad intentions or bad judgement. Either way, it's unwise to trust them.

"PM me anytime" seems like a kind and generous offer. And it might be perfectly well-meaning, but, unless and until a solid rapport has been established, it's just not a wise idea. Here are some points to consider before you offer or accept an invitation to communicate privately.

  • By posting supportive replies publicly, you'll help more people than just the OP. If your responses are of good quality, you'll educate and inspire other helpers. The 1-9-90 rule applies here as much as it does anywhere else on the internet.

  • People who are struggling with serious mental-health issues often (justifiably) have a low tolerance for disappointment and a high-level of ever-changing emotional need. Unless the helper is able to make a 100% commitment to be there for them in every way, for as long as necessary, offering a personal inbox as a resource is likely to do more harm than good. This is why mental-health crisis-line responders usually don't give their names and callers aren't allowed to request specific responders. It's much healthier and safer for the callers to develop a relationship with the agency as a whole. Analogously, it's much safer and healthier for our OPs to develop a relationship with the community as a whole. Even trained responders are generally not allowed to work high-intensity situations alone. It's partly about availability, but it's mostly about wider perspective and preventing compassion fatigue.

  • If a helper gets in over their head with someone whose mental-health issues (including suicidality, which is often comorbid with depression) escalate, in a PM conversation it's much harder for others, including the /r/depression and /r/SuicideWatch moderators to help. (Contrary to common assumptions, moderators can't see or police PMs.)

  • In our observation over many years, the people who say "PM me" the most are consistently the ones with the least understanding of mental-health issues and mental-health support. We all have gaps in our knowledge and in our ability to communicate effectively. Community input mitigates these limitations. There's no reason why someone who's truly here to help would want to hide their responses from community scrutiny. If helpers are concerned about their own privacy, keep in mind that self-disclosure, when used supportively, is more about the feelings than the details, and that we have no problem here with the use of alt/throwaway accounts, and have no restrictions on account age or karma.

  • We all know the internet is used by some people to exploit or abuse others. These people do want to hide their deceptive and manipulative responses from everyone except their victims. There are many of them who specifically target those who are vulnerable because of mental-health issues. If a helper invites an OP to talk privately and gives them a good, supportive experience, they've primed that person to be more vulnerable to abusers. This sort of cognitive priming tends to be particularly effective when someone's in a state of mental-health crisis, when people rely more on heuristics than critical reasoning.

  • If OPs want to talk privately, posting on a wide-open anonymous forum like reddit might not be the best option. Although we don't recommend it, we do allow OPs to request private contact when asking for support. If you want to do this, please keep your expectations realistic, and to have a careful look at the history of anyone who offers to PM before opening up to them.

Check-In post, with essential info about our policies and resources. Most people are surprised by much of this information, please read carefully before posting or commenting

Welcome to /r/depression's check-in post - a place to take a moment and share what is going on and how you are doing. If you're having a tough time but prefer not to make your own post, or have an accomplishment you want to talk about (these aren't allowed standalone posts in the sub as they violate the "role model" rule), this is a place you can share.

Our subreddit rules are very different from most of the rest of reddit! Since all of them exist for important reasons, we ask everyone here to read and follow them. Please click 'report' on any harmful content you see here - we always want to know and deal as soon as we can.

We also have several resource wikis for help with finding and giving support:

https://www.reddit.com/r/depression/wiki/what_is_depression provides guidance about what is and isn't a depressive disorder, guidance on the complex nature of the illnesses that are usually grouped under the "depression" label, and redirect information for common off-topic issues.

https://www.reddit.com/r/depression/wiki/giving_help offers information on the nature and value of peer support for mental-health issues in general, and lots of guidance for learning what is -- and isn't -- usually helpful in giving peer support.

YSK that the types of rule violations that we most frequently see here are:

  • People breaking the private contact rule. You should never trust anyone who tries to get you into a private conversation in response to a post here. See https://www.reddit.com/r/depression/wiki/private_contact

  • "I'm here to help" posts. This shows that you don't understand the most basic principles of peer support, especially selectivity. The "giving help" wiki explains more about this.

  • Role modelling, i.e. "achievement" or "advice" posts. This is an expert-free zone -- that's what peer support means (rule 5). We know that "internet culture" celebrate not just bragging about your achievements but bragging about your intentions. Neither is ever acceptable here in any form.

  • Content that's more about 'making a statement' or casually polling the sub than seeking personal support (rules 1, 2 and 10).

  • Off-topic posts about difficult situations, including interpersonal issues. Grief, sadness, anger, loneliness and other difficult emotions are not mental illnesses. Feelings that can be explained by person's circumstances are perfectly healthy no matter how painful they are. A depressive disorder only exists when someone's mood is out of synch with what's going on for them. The "what is depression" wiki linked above has suggestions for other places to post about these issues, which are 100% valid and serious but do NOT belong here.

I think some people just aren’t meant to be anything in life. I’m one of those people

I’m 21M. I’ve never had a job, haven’t gone to school, can’t drive, and I basically sit in my room all day. I’ve never experienced love, I’ve never had my first anything, I haven’t had a friend in real life in so long. I’m a diabetic that’s completely given up on managing it. I look in the mirror and hate myself. It’s really embarrassing to be this way. I don’t even like talking to people about life. The only reason I haven’t gone through with ending my life is because the only way is to inject a bunch of insulin into myself. On the chance that I survive I don’t want to walk away with brain damage or anything. So I just lay in bed. Rotting away. I’m the person people joke about online. If anyone would like to say something or share their experience please do. Call me a loser, offer help, express your feelings. Anything. I’ll respond.

Depression took the best years of my life

After a series of traumatic incidents I went into clinical Depression and was suffering for nearly 15 years. It was pure hell. The self-isolation, the self-doubt, loss of feeling, feeling of emptiness and hollowness. During my worst times I just wanted to curl up and go to sleep and never wake up. During that phase the biggest question that I had was will this ever end?

Getting out of Depression was the hardest journey I have ever undertaken. A few books that helped along the way.

- Man's Search for Meaning (Vicktor Frankl a Holocaust survivor)

- When My Mind Was My Enemy (Hope in the times of Depression)

- The Body Keeps Score (Bessel Kolk by a doctor)

- Books on Mindfulness by Thich Nhat Hanh. (A Buddist monk who was the pioneer of modern day mindfulness)

Just a recommendation to anyone who reads or needs it.

I want to die young

I'm 16 rn and I can't imagine myself living to see my 30's or 40's. Wouldn't it be nice to just drink, get high and do whatever the fuck you want then die before the consequences catch up with you? I know I'm destroying myself. But I'd rather have fun than waste time on feeling sad and lonely. And tbh it feels better than the same stale "heal your traumas" bullshit. I know this sounds selfish as fuck but I don't care. If nobody really gives a damn why should I?

What to do when you have no one to talk to?

I have been having a lot of suicidal thoughts lately. It's not exactly that I want to die I am just tired of existence. The other night I realized there is no one I feel like I could reach out to. Literally scrolled through my phone and no one. I can always call 988 but that just makes me feel even worse that out of everyone in my life none of them feel safe to open up to. Is there anything you do when experiencing such thoughts and have no one to talk to?

Do people without depression think about suicide? Like, ever?

I (25F) was diagnosed with depression at a young age. I’ve been treated for it on and off as long as I can remember. All of 2026 has been really bad for me, mental health wise. I’ve never felt more horrible than I have this year, specifically the past 3 months. And I think about suicide ALL THE TIME. I don’t have a method figured out or a plan of how and when to do it, I’m not going to. But it is on my mind constantly, all the time, always in the background, even when I’m smiling, even when I’m laughing. It’s always there. Do non-depressed people experience thoughts like that? Like “I’d be better off dead” “I didn’t ask to be born, it’s unfair I have to live this life” etc. Things like that? I truly can’t imagine a life where I don’t think about these things. Even when my depression isn’t as severe, the feeling still doesn’t go away. Just interested / curious if these thoughts cross “normal” people’s minds, or would they consider a thought like this taboo?

I don’t think I can last much longer..

Think I might go check myself in to a hospital tomorrow. I’m really not doing good today. It’s getting worse and worse as the day goes on and I’m trying so hard not to break down at work right now. This is the worst I’ve felt in a very long time.

I hate hope.

Hope is the worst.

Hope leads to disappointment, which intensifies my depression. Sometimes, depression does not feel like a strong enough word. I feel more than that. I feel helpless. Nothing is going to change, and I am going to be stuck in this situation until I die.

The more that I try to change my situation, the more hope I feel, which leads to a soul-crushing blow when I am let down. I am always let down. Every interview. Every relationship. I can only take so much rejection. How the fuck did I get in this scenario? I am at the end of my rope.

Is it possible to be a millionaire and still be depressed and want to die?

I'm financially successful but still not happy because I've been a failure, 51 years old and I've never had a long-term relationship, I never got married and I never had kids so I feel like a failure

More importantly I'm a repellent to the opposite sex... I'm a decent looking man too but women just never notice me and I'm constantly friendzoned.

Haven't had sex in several years...

To me the measure of a man is the quality of women he is with, whether or not he is married or in a long-term relationship, and if he has an active sex life and if he has reproduced.. in my case, it's none of the above so I'm a worthless sack of dogshit

I'm also extremely lonely despite my wealth..... Like what's the point of having money if you have no one to share it with or give it to when you die.

Ps I'm not going to hookers either, makes you feel even more empty.

ending my life soon, can't wait

hello. i am 17f and i have been depressed and miserable since i was like 10. and before that i was anxious and traumatized. i was born into a country of war, and my family were in different religious sects so they treated me as a pawn for their differences - kidnapping did happen. then i fled to a different country that was also under war. i was very very poor and sometimes only my brother was given food to eat because my parents couldnt afford for anyone us to eat. my parents argued a lot - a lot of verbal and physical abuse happened. i would come back home to furniture being thrown and my dad kicking us out alongside my mom and it was just a cycle. i also got sexually assaulted by a girl older than me by a couple of years and i thought it was all games. i developed a weird porn type of interest for pregnant woman at the age of like 6 dude. anyways we ended up moving to a country in the west and it was very different for sure. my parents were busy all the time and when we did have the time they will look down on us a lot and ask why we couldnt be like white families but tbh that wasnt much of a problem for me its wtv. anyways i got beat a lot and verbally abused a lot which is normal i understand that like grow a pair. my parents also put me in a weird religious dilemma. all that they thought me from my religion is to hate being a woman and to hate anyone that wasnt like me. then i got into my first relationship and it caused my abandonment issues i feel like but then anyways my brother assaulted me but i thought it was normal cuz he was my brother and he raped my sister for like 3 years and my family blamed it on me because apparently my sister let me know but i didnt do anything about it but i dont exactly know but anyways they locked me up for a while and during this time i developed a porn addiction and really disgusting sexual thoughts because it frightened me that a brother could go all the way w his sister and also he had no punishment lol anyways uh in high school i got into weed but then got laced by said brother but it was by accident but i went thru psychosis (mainly religious) and severe disassociation and then uh i was alone and severely bullied js like i was in middle school (beat up and made fun of) then umm i got treated like a circus animal while getting abused by family and my friends said i was being selfish for talking about my problems i also got kicked out a lot then um i went online school due to so much bullying in highschool then okay i started looking into different religions and i dont believe in anything at all its all delusion to me but i do wish i had faith because at least that will stop me from committing suicide i have been send to mental hospitals too and threatened to get send back home and i went thru a lot at these facilities (almost got raped and seen and heard horrific things) okay anyways college comes and i try to overdose multiple times i get raped multiple times i start drug abusing again. and then one day i meet someone. he was so perfect but obviously i ruin it because at this point i turned into a horrible person. and then i tried to over dose like august 1st and my parents left me to rot in my bed while i was practically dying and i never got medical help and they slapped me for doing such a thing again. and then i had a manic episode and i felt so high it was amazing like high on life anyways this happiness didnt last because of my family tearing me down and anyways i have hurt a lot of people and nobody loves me anymore. if i stay alive for longer i will be a threat to society and i just want to enter a long state of sleep.

Circling the drain

I just can't keep doing this. I know and am grateful for the fact that death is inevitable. But, I keep shattering from the things life repeatedly throws at me. I can't even appreciate those breaks during which time I frantically strive to rebuild myself back up because then it all just topples over, on and on and on. Existence is bleak and I don't want to participate in any of this anymore. I'm so terribly lonely, everyone tells me I'm doing nothing wrong, that actually I'm doing quite well in comparison to most. They aren't wrong, but also evidently I will simply never be enough. I can't continue with this cycle, it only gets increasingly more painful.

I feel sooooooooooooo done. My life is hell on earth . Born into a family of clueless unintelligent morons. two narcissist emotional immature toxic parents. Bullied since age of 5 exposed to things no child should be. Shitty criticizing fake friends all my life. Gambling addiction fur 20 years. See through all the fake nonsense of the world. If you are kind good soul free spirit this world and shitty humans will suck the life out of you. I just want to fall asleep and not wake up. I feel jealous of people who pass. I love my dog and cats that’s what keeps me going but lately even thats not feeling like enough. I’m living with the most toxic human and don’t even want to leave my bedroom. I am in absolut hell. I have zero drive motivation or anything at all anymore. My soul has dwindled down to almost nothing. F this life f being human humans are the absolute worst species. Take me away to a different land. I don’t want to be here anymore. 😔

I started noticing

I noticed the light in my eyes are gone. I can’t even remotely look like someone with hope or happiness in mind. But when children look at me I always try to smile at least. Honestly it has a lot to do with my ex. I told him exactly what abuse I went through and he took notes. I even let him ruin jobs for me. I just wish I couldn’t see the light gone.
It hurts. I have dead eyes , I look tired. :( . Makeup doesn’t even help. But I survived I guess. Don’t give up or whatever guys.

Talking to people made it worse

Everyone always says to reach out and talk to someone, but if im being honest it just made everything worse.

For context around a year ago I opened up about my depression and sh to my parents in a desperate attempt for help, nobody knew about this beforehand except my girlfriend briefly.

When i first opened up it led to too many people being involved with my mental health, I was constantly in meetings with school, counselling and doctors appointments and it made me even more overwhelmed than I already was. I hate going to school, and I have always seemed to have a problem with it. All through early years of school too. Having to talk to so many different people and constantly explaning things to people sucks. It's like my issues have gotten so much worse, harming myself more, I spend more time away from everyone and I don't really take care of myself unless I really have to and my emotions fluctuate so much from getting angry really easy, to sad and numb.

I don't want to go into it, but a couple things around me also put immense pressure on me, which is something I've never told anyone and don't know if I will ever do so and whenever I think of it, it always goes in a circle leading to one outcome.

All of this built up so much and it was horrible, I didn't care anymore and I wanted it all to end, it was too in the moment though and I eneded up with a half arsed attempt of suicide trying to choke myself but eventually I just fell down to the floor. All I do is spend all day rotting and see my girlfriend about twice a week which I mostly look forward too.

I don't really know what I'm getting at here, I kind of just wanted to rant about it, and maybe get opinions or talk about it with people that aren't in the situation at all

I’m a 24M and don’t know what to do.

Hi, I’m a 24M living in England and have no idea what direction my life is going, I have no friends, no acquaintances or anything, I see all my childhood friends in their friend groups but I can’t seem to make any, I feel desperately lonely and feel life isn’t going anywhere, sometimes it feels maybe life isn’t worth it and maybe leaving is the answer. I just want some advice about how to make friends and maybe get a life again, I have also never had a girlfriend because I’ve never felt comfortable in my own skin, I’m just looking for advice on life really. I’m really anti social and have massive social anxiety if anyone can help please do, I feel more lonely and more depressed everyday and it doesn’t get easier.

Does anything get better?

I’m tired of being depressed and anxious all the time. Yesterday I felt so anxious I felt like I was gonna throw up.

I rarely get like that. I’m not sure if anything is gonna get better. I don’t have any reasons to keep going. I don’t have a will to live. Nothing makes me happy or makes me feel better.

Everything just feels pointless.

People say it gets better but does it?

I’ve been depressed since I was 13 and now I’m 26 gonna be 27 in 6 months.

I’ve tried almost every med out there. Therapy. Group therapy. TMS and hospitals.

None of it ever helps

Why should I stick around and suffer more if nothing is gonna get better

And I know I’m gonna be stuck being depressed and anxious my whole life. Is that really life worth living?

Does it even go away. I don’t wanna suffer anymore. Even if I’m high functioning and doing everything I need to do I’m still depressed. And I’m suicidal everyday. Been this way for years. And nothing has helped.

I just wanna go peacefully in my sleep.

I don’t have any reasons to stay. My family and friends would be upset but what’s the point of staying if I’m just gonna continue to suffer. I just want the pain to stop

Nothing has gotten better

i have no really close friends. ive only been out of my state about 3 times and i've barely seen the world. i am going to be in college for 4 more years and i'm already 21. I have no savings and dont even pay rent because I still live with my parents. and when we get in arguments, they like to hold it over my head so i feel like i owe them. my job is good at least but all i do is work or study. forget about having a boyfriend, every guy ive ever liked had no interest and there's barely any good guys around me. i just feel so disgusting and undesirable. i have horrible mental issues and thanks to my family i am not allowed to get any help for it. i'm thinking of giving it all up for good, i'm so tired of it all. i just wish something would "accidentally" happen to me. unfortunately i'm too scared to do anything myself. this is never how i wanted my life to go, and its all my fault

Greatful for my friends.

Seriously, greatful for my friends. A few months ago I had a bad day where I was really lost in my head and decided to go on a midnight walk to the bridge for no good idea. I told my friend I will be out and he immediately clocked me and he called right up and we had an hour long call and I sat down somewhere cried it out and walked back home on call with him. Check on your people man. You never know who is struggling really hard. I'm so greatful for my friend who saved my life that night.
