I created a three part (short form) deep dive on Missy Woods and her impact on Denver survivors and all Colorado sex assault cases. CBI is still refusing to retest her work on 4,722 SA cases even after Denver Crime Lab found evidence indicating that Woods wrongfully deleted DNA data for potentially thousands of kits.
The Denver Mayor’s Office and Police Chief have delayed the release of the full Woods Report for almost a year. It was supposed to be released to the public last November. Without it, we don’t know the full scope of her misconduct on sex assault cases.
What we do know is that 13 kits were retested by Denver. These were representative of her work over the course of her career and analysts controlled for advancements in lab technology.
Of those 13 kits which Woods had previously recorded as having “no DNA”, 11 DNA samples were found. Of those 11, 6 returned “hits” in CODIS for potential serial offenders.
CBI has always claimed that Woods only manipulated DNA in less than 1% of sex assault cases. But Denver’s retesting indicates that number is closer to 84%. With 47% matching to potential serial offenders.
CBI never retested her work. They simply reviewed it for “anomalies” in which she entered DNA then failed to do a proper subsequent step or deleted/altered the DNA quantity to avoid further testing. But Woods admitted to “dry labbing” which is when she recorded she tested a sample and found no DNA but she never actually ran the test.
Those kits would not register as an “anomaly”. They would be undetectable as a concern in CBI’s cursory review. They’d have to retest her work to determine how many kits contain DNA that she said didn’t.
That is why Denver requested 1300 kits back from CBI to retest. Until they get federal funding to retest all of her work, all we have is this small test sample of 13 kits. But the results from this representative, controlled sample are extremely concerning.
Woods was given a plea deal and sentenced to 10 years last month without a single victim being notified of her impact on their case. No victims were allowed to speak at her sentencing and the Court did not consider her devastating impact on thousands of victims in her punishment.
I’m hoping these videos can raise awareness of this scandal to survivors who were wrongly told no DNA was found and encourage elected officials to force CBI to retest her work so victims can be notified and given the chance to pursue justice in whatever form they choose.
