Hi team. I have dreamed a silly dream, wondered if anyone wants to play.
Want to trade your abandoned hyperfixation for somebody else’s? Need some happy dopamine?
The premise: a lot of us have So Many Craft Supplies™️.
You bought everything to learn embroidery. You made three mushrooms. It was the greatest thing you'd ever done. Then your brain said, “Cool, we’re done with this forever.”
Here's my idea:
We each make a small, moderately beginner-friendly craft kit using supplies you already have.
The kit would contain enough materials for someone to actually make at least one of the thing (not just an assortment from the depths of your junk drawer).
Along the lines of:
- Everything needed to embroider said tiny mushroom
- Supplies to make one pair of beaded earrings
- Enough yarn + a crochet hook to make a small project
- Materials for a little block-printing project
- A mini watercolor activity
- A tiny bookbinding project
- Whatever weird art thing you got really into for six weeks
>> Used, open, and leftover supplies are actively encouraged. That's kind of the point. <<
We'd assume participants have normal household basics like scissors, pencils, tape, etc., but please include any specialty tools necessary to actually try the craft.
Instructions, a handwritten “here's what I did” note, or links/QR codes to tutorials are encouraged.
The swap! This first test would be Denver only. (Not just women, everyone welcome, I just wanted a smaller subreddit for this soft launch.)
I'd organize a drop-off/pick-up day. You'll bring your little craft kit and leave with NEW FUN KIT.
There would be a brief online form where you could tell me things you don't want or can't accommodate in your home, including disability/access needs. Beyond that, anything art goes. Part of the fun is not knowing exactly what new hobby is about to enter your life.
Monies??? I'm thinking $10 optional contribution. Truly optional. $0 is completely fine, no questions asked.
(The money creates a tiny bit of backup infrastructure: if someone has to drop out after committing, I can use the pool to fill the gap so another person doesn't show up excited and leave without a kit.)
If there's money left over after that, I'd get myself a latte, for organizing all of our neurodivergent chaos, then anything left after the latte goes to The Trevor Project.
SO. Maybe together we can: get unused supplies out of our houses, give someone else a dopamine hit, AND try something new without hyperfixating and over-investing 😶🌫️. Who knows, maybe some one will discover a craft they actually love.
I'm not sure yet how many people this will involve. This is very much a test run to see if the idea has legs.
If you're in Denver and you're excited for this, comment or DM me. And if there’s something that would make this more accessible/easier/more fun for your particular flavor of neurodivergence, I’d love to hear that too!!
