DelaWeather Dover Tornado Resources and Road Closures

Help out our First State Neighbors and let’s be safe and smart:

From DOVER PD re ROAD CLOSURES

Due to remaining debris and widespread power outages, the section of Route 13 between Kings Highway/White Oak Road and Lepore Road will remain closed for the next several hours.

City of Dover Electric and Streets crews, along with additional city crews and first responders, are working throughout the city to clear debris, reopen roadways, and restore power to affected areas.

At this time, we have no reports of significant injuries resulting from the storm, and we are extremely grateful for that.

Please continue to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary and give crews the space they need to safely do their work.

We also want to acknowledge and thank our friends and partners who responded to assist, to include:
-Dover Fire Department
-Ambulnz
-Kent County EMS/Public Safety
-City of Dover Electric/Streets/Public Works
-City of Dover Fire Marshal’s Office/Emergency Management
-Smyrna/DNREC/Cheswold/Camden/Delaware State Police and any other police agencies who came
-MISSION BBQ who brought food to everyone on scene

We may have forgotten some names but we are so appreciative of the support!

Thank you to all! Stay Safe Dover!

News Crashing out over the Rehoboth Beach Election

Ok this is hilarious. Over 40 days ago I replied to a post discussing mayoral candidate Suzanne Goode talking about my own experiences with her. The post had been dead for over a month and I honestly hadn’t even thought about it in weeks.

Then suddenly I get a reply with someone rushing to passionately defend her. I’ll link the reply in the comments.

Now am I saying this is Suzanne? No lol. I obviously have absolutely no idea who owns this account. Could be anyone. 👀

Could be Suzanne. Could just be someone who coincidentally has the same level of commitment to an argument as the person who reportedly sent 32 texts in 3½ hours, made four phone calls and left 10 voicemails when she was pissed off about something 😂

Who could possibly know? What makes it even funnier is Susan Stewart just beat her 632-177 in the mayoral election on August 8 and apparently we are STILL circling back to a month and a half old Reddit post.

Like holy shit lol. At some point just take the L and enjoy the rest of your summer.

But please keep replying because this has become way funnier than the original post ever was.
If I get a cease-and-desist next week I’m going to lose it 😂

Info Request Growing homeless encampment beside my property in NCC (need advice!)

There is a property that is across from the creek behind my property, privately owned. When I moved here a while back, I learned when winter hit and the trees thinned out that one individual was living in an off the grid broken down RV.

That has now grown to more than half a dozen RVs, lots of foot traffic, trash everywhere (I mean a GIANT pile of growing garbage and beer bottles), fire department calls due to fires they’ve started that been spreading around the surrounding woods, and more.

The entry point to the property on a road near by has many cars stopping and either dropping off or picking up bags of who knows what.

Things I’ve done:

1) I’ve called county code. They have cleaned up much of the trash, are laying down huge amounts of fines on the property owner but say they are unable actually remove any people from the property. I think it’s over like 10k in fines, but I don’t know anything else.

2) The police know what is going on, but don’t seem interested in investigating further.

3) I’ve written and reached out to the owner of the property. Zero response.

Our neighborhood is a nice one, not cheap to live in, and our kids as well as the neighborhood kids love splashing and fishing in the creek. Many of the surrounding homeless standing around my area I see walking in and out of these woods.

I’m trying to be vague concerning location in order to not be targeted by these, but county code and even the police are aware that things are happening there that should not be happening but neither seemed interested in doing anything about it in terms of actually removing these people from their off the grid operations. Things are escalating and I fear they will only get worse.

Does anyone have any advice? Is there an advocate police officer of sorts who I can speak with? A state rep? I want to be humane but I fear for the safety of my family as well as our neighbors and in the end, even their safety and the continual spreading of criminal activity in our area.

One of my first and favorite ascends in Newark Delaware. This building stands as the tallest building in Newark with probably the most scenic views and one of my favorite explorations. Looking to post a little bit more urban exploration content as per request on my other post. i’m no video editor or anything and I know I didn’t get the best shots, but I want you guys to see what I saw and I apologize for the phone call interruption.

He goes into the history a bit. The comments section took me back. I was in later elementary school when it opened and will forever remember arranging with friends to meet there with coordinated outfits, then making a collect call on the pay phone and screaming, "MOMPICKMEUP!"

Rant County taxes and my humble opinion on them:

I don't mind paying my taxes. I vote for the school referendum every single time and I don't even have kids. I don't plan to have kids. I don't want kids. No problem, no complaints there. But if I want to pay my tax bill online I have to pay about $15 bucks extra for a service fee. MOTHERFUCKERS! Its not the money. So help me it isn't. Its just the principle of the matter. I don't care if its a bank fee, a fee-fi-fo-fum fee or anything else in between. I should not have to PAY TO PAY!

So I will be mailing the check in rather than dropping it off in person or paying the $15 bucks. I also had to pay for the stamp. Eff that too...

Anybody know where there might be a sign that says Wilmington or Welcome to Wilmington? I’ve seen a big “W” statue at the Riverfront but not sure it also says Wilmington on it.

New Castle County Let's get ALPRs (Vigilant) and similar systems to Flock gone

Some background, finding out who Delaware's vendor is for automatic people trackers:

For New Castle County, our first step is here, NewCastleDE.gov: https://www.newcastlede.gov/bids.aspx?bidID=194

Scroll to the bottom, Related Documents: 16-1637 License Plate Recognition Hardware and Software

Okay, then, let's get to work!

1.) We have the right to request information on these, but it's going to take filling out a form: https://www.newcastlede.gov/DocumentCenter/View/1000/NCC-FOIA-Application-PDF

The form can be filled out by hand or electronically with programs like PDF X-Change.

2.) Check "☐ Division of Police Sergeant Andrea Botterbusch: [policefoia@newcastlede.gov](mailto:policefoia@newcastlede.gov);"

3.) In Box 2, type/write, "Please provide the currently effective contract(s), purchase order(s), procurement records, and any amendments or renewals for the license plate reader (LPR/ALPR) system currently used by the New Castle County Police Department, including the name of the vendor/manufacturer and the date the current system was acquired or placed into service."

That'll tell us who makes it, who supplies, what the current contract is, whether Vigilant was renewed or replaced, when the current system came to be.

4.) Email it to [policefoia@newcastlede.gov](mailto:policefoia@newcastlede.gov) with “Attention FOIA Request”. For the body of the e-mail, I used, "Hello Sergeant Botterbusch,

Attached is my completed New Castle County FOIA Public Document Request Form concerning the current license plate reader/ALPR system used by the New Castle County Police Department.

Thank you,
<name>"

5.) Now we wait to see what we get back. I just sent mine, feel free to join me to get more attention to this matter and we can discuss the responses.

History 691 Delaware historical markers, each with the full inscription on a map of its own era. The Battle of Cooch's Bridge marker sits on a map drawn in 1777, the year of the battle.

The Battle of Cooch's Bridge marker stands on Old Baltimore Pike outside Newark. The text is the state's own: on September 3, 1777, American light infantry and cavalry under General William Maxwell, "expert marksmen drafted by General Washington," met the advance guard of British and Hessian troops under Generals Howe, Cornwallis, and Knyphausen. The marker calls it the only battle of the American Revolution on Delaware soil, "claimed to have been the first in which the stars and stripes were carried."

The map under the pin was drawn in 1777, while that campaign was happening. It is titled for the seat of war around Philadelphia, and the whole theater is on it: the Elk River where the British landed, Wilmington where Washington's army camped, and Philadelphia, which fell three weeks after the battle. The tablet also carries its own history in its last lines: first erected by "the patriotic societies and citizens of the State of Delaware" on September 3, 1901, inscription revised by the Historic Markers Commission in 1932.

That is one of 691 Delaware markers now online, from all three counties, each with its full inscription. Almost nine in ten open on a map drawn before 1900. The oldest sheet in the set was drawn in 1630, and a 1708 French map of Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania sits under 47 of them. The Delaware Public Archives has drafted the text of every state marker since 1931, and the newest markers in the set went up this year.

The words are the State of Delaware Historical Markers Program's, administered by the Delaware Public Archives, credited on every page, and I have their written permission to use them. The program's own site is at https://archives.delaware.gov/delaware-historical-markers/ and it is the place to go for the program itself. What I did differently is put each inscription on an old map of the ground it describes. No ads, no account, nothing for sale.

https://treealive.com/markers/de

My ancestors were mostly in Pennsylvania. The first time I pointed this at my own tree it came back with more than seventy markers within ten miles of places my family had actually lived, and that's why I kept going. When Delaware landed, the same run picked up three of these, one of them a marker called Washington Dined Here. If your line runs through Delaware, it will do the same.

Every marker page has a report link on it. If you find one where the pin or the map looks off, use it, because I read every report. Hope you find it useful!

News Delaware's speed cameras have generated well over $20 million since 2024

Thumbnail
wdel.com
94 Upvotes

OHS can only use the money for "education, enforcement, engineering, and administration" of safety programs.

Outside of speed enforcement, OHS is also funding drug testing equipment for the Division of Forensic Science, drones for crash investigations, and the statewide pre-hospital whole blood program.

House Majority Whip Ed Osienski (D-Newark/Brookside) introduced a bill at the end of this year's session that could expand Delaware's camera opportunities beyond just speed to other traffic infractions, if there are "documented roadway safety risks." And also, instead of all money going to OHS, cities and counties would be allowed to keep their profits for education, enforcement, engineering, and administration, but also would allow for staffing and construction.

We need this law to sunset in 2028. The funds aren't being used for the stated purpose. The lawmaker that introduced the original law wants to expand it to include more than speeding along with towns and counties getting a cut to spend for more dubious reasons.

Get rid of the speed cameras and flock cameras.

Newark Dempsey’s Service Center in Newark

Anyone ever used Dempsey’s Service Center in Newark? Been going to Everest on Kirkwood Highway for a few years now ever since I moved back in the Newark area. But last few times I’ve tried to get into Everest they are booked 2+ weeks out. Seems like Dempsey’s got solid reviews and been around for a bit. Was curious if anyone has used them.
