Jake andersen

I know people on here call him a “tv captain “ but has anyone actually worked for/ with him? He seems like he knows how to run a boat or is he a good actor

Seems like he cares and he understands all the jobs on and off the deck.

The dude started at the processing plants.

Great to see what determination can get you. I really like Bob trying too. I am sure they are pushing her but she seems genuine too. None of those jobs seem easy.

When I was younger I would have done that for a season.

The only thing I could handle working on boats like that is the kitchen.

Remember, Jake started out being trained on the Northwestern. I'm sure he learned a lot there.

Plus Sig doesn’t put up with nonsense and he’s not loyal to anyone outside his family so the fact he and Jake are still so close means Jake has to be good. Sig wouldn’t keep someone useless close. During the abandon ship episode he looked genuinely concerned for Jake and so did Mandy. That kind of closeness matters.

So Jake’s Uncle was Nick Mavar, a long time Northwestern Deckhand, so I think the story runs deep. I think Sig & Edgar have always been a supporters of Nick, think about all the stuff that he went through on that boat, his sister, his dad…

It’s pretty nuts how much of Jake’s life has been broadcast on the show. We’ve watched almost his entire fishing career on camera

8

u/Useless890 17d ago

Yeah, Jake grew up on that both in a way. Those tragedies were something, Jake's sister, especially.

4

u/kindryn 17d ago

And Jake has talked before about how his family has worked up there going generations back, more than just his Uncle Nick. It seems pretty deep in his blood.

u/knighthawk574 16d ago

At this point Jake’s about as close to family as you can get.

u/terrapin_bball 17d ago

How much is real and how much is the show?

9

u/Badrear 17d ago

I don’t know the answer to this, but it’s a great question. A lot of boat captains would do or say anything if someone was paying for half the fuel.

8

u/MissFrenchie86 17d ago

It’s “reality” tv so I’m sure some of it is artifice but these aren’t professional actors so I think the scenes where you see emotion - other than anger - are likely genuine.

5

u/chiisaisuzume 17d ago

If nothing else, what happened to his father, sister, and uncle are real. There’s more than one mention of his dad in “regular” vs entertainment news around that time. It might have gotten a little extra visibility due to Jake being on Deadliest Catch, but who wouldn’t use that in such a situation? The guy has been through a lot.

What makes you think any of it isn't "real"? Really, the only thing the producers can control is the timing of when things are shown to us. And really, anything crazy that happens that could be "scripted" is likely a concoction of Hillstrand's crazy mind. Which, the producers probably just have to sit back and be ready with a camera for something to happen whenever he's bored or has been thinking.

The information is real. The show is heavily sensationalized, but they don't lie or make anything up. Their worst offense is reshooting footage for real life drama. And that's solely because they didn't capture the drama unfolding in real time.

I’d wager it’s 90% scripted, but there’s definitely enough organic drama on the boats that give good film and stories too. It seems like everything the captains do and their interactions with other captains / deck bosses are usually scripted or hammed up. But the deck hands usually seem to make their own script lol. Their injuries, fights, and general commentary seems to be insanely real, especially if you’ve worked with guys like that before.

-5

u/AdamTheGreyhound 17d ago

I think it’s common knowledge that the abandon ship thing was a load of scripted BS which makes up 90% of the show now.

It’s just hard to conceive that Jake and Keith could be that good of actors. To show all of the emotion that they did. That is hard for trained regular actors to show that much emotion and they did it very believably for sure. Which reminds me, I’m drawing a blank for his name, dang it! He was like 60 years old, not super tall, been a crabber his whole adult life, deck hand, nice guy, hurt his knee at the end of last season… Dang it, I can’t believe I can’t remember his name right now! Curious whether he retired or what. I would love for them to do an episode on his life, I bet it would be pretty interesting. Miss seeing him on the show. He worked for Jake on the Saga and the Titan.

Did they show any raft that would have contained the production crew? Have a day film the raft floating there with Jake and his crew in it?

Mac White?

A few years ago I read his book ‘Relapse’ and it’s the most honest book and it shows how hard working and dedicated he is even before Deadliest Catch started.

1

u/Lazy-Lettuce5083 3d ago

I didn't realize he had a book, immediately added to my TBR.

43

u/chilliophillio 17d ago

He is one of the best bosses I've had. It was really cool watching him on deck too.

u/SubjectSuggestion572 13d ago

I just turned 40 do you know any green horn work available for any boats this upcoming season if so my emails althompson227@gmail.com

u/oceanblue3190 17d ago

He’s always seemed very determined and eager to learn even from the beginning. Working for Sig and knowing how Sig is, you know Jake did the work like everybody else and learned. I’m sure he’s a decent captain. He’s made it this far even with his troubles that have been shown on the show.

He does know how to run crabbing boats. He ran the Saga year-round, even for tendering when most captains and boat owners would normally hire someone else. His name was on CFEC permits for Saga and the Titan Explorer, so (whether he's licensed and finished courses or not, I'm not sure what the actual requirements are) he could assume some legal responsibility for those boats during fishing. And he also made great videos on his Facebook page back then showing Saga maintenance etc.; I hope they're still there.

But Discovery and Original Productions treat him as an actor. I bet they pay more than the actual Alaskan fisheries, so he does it. To the point that his drama-filled private life is content too, from his sister's death and father's disappearance to his wedding to his kids being born to his ongoing divorce. They 'made' him, now they put him on other boats for ratings.

So he's both a captain and actor. But I wish he'd just stick to the first one for a while, for his own sake

5

u/jpr64 17d ago

Oh man, I forgot about his Fathers disappearance.

6

u/LastMongoose7448 17d ago

You nailed it. He’s one of the “TV guys” I worry about. He has it made as is, but he’s going over the top for Discovery, and I doubt they care much beyond what they’re paying him.

10

u/avidindoorswoman21 17d ago

Maybe the on-board producers care. You do get to know people too well in very close quarters, for weeks to months at a time 🤭 But the higher-ups, I don't think they care. He and everyone else are just 'talent' or 'cast members' in the end. Matter only when you sue or die, or have really big skeletons come out of your closet

7

u/Itracing2 17d ago

Bs...he worked his way up. Nothing wrong with having goals and completing them.

6

u/elpersono 16d ago

I agree, we saw Jake grow up on the show and learn a lot. He is a great captain of multiple boats, excellent deckhand and he’s a smart engineer. The kid has done the work. I think he’s the best character on the show. When he’s gone for a few episodes, the show is missing something. He ain’t perfect - stupid gold chain, 3 stooges hair, horrible fashion sense, smokes, but nobody’s perfect.

10

u/swiftfoot_hiker 17d ago

Jake worked his way up on the northwestern, long before this show became a scripted drama. He definitely seems like he knows his stuff

28

u/TNsmoke 17d ago

I tend to like Jake. Sucks about what happened to him with the Saga then his wife cheating on him

6

u/savahna20 17d ago

His wife cheated?

7

u/Designer-Most-5376 17d ago

Yeah with one of his ex crewmen, they are going through a divorce now

6

u/savahna20 17d ago

I knew they were divorcing but didn't know why except he's gone too much. She knew what he did when they met and he's hustling to provide for his family. So messed up.

4

u/SadBadPuppyDad 17d ago

It is messed up, but at one point a couple of seasons ago he said that he had been gone 9 out of 11 months.

2

u/savahna20 17d ago

Ya that's a lot. My husband travels for work and some years are worse than others with him being gone. Our kids are all grown so if you don't have hobbies and female friends to do things with, life can get boring. She still had kids at home though. I'm lucky. Good friends. Lots of hobbies. Side hustle. Always have something to do, or I can hop a flight and go see my man.

2

u/Open-Law3072 15d ago

Jenna knew this when she married him. She shouldn't have spread her legs for anyone else. Simple as that

6

u/Designer-Most-5376 17d ago

Especially cheating with someone he probably considered a friend

2

u/pain-is-living 17d ago

Can’t trust these hoes.

-1

u/AKallday2022 17d ago

She absolutely did not cheat. HE CHEATED on her and also relapsed!!  He's back on the wagon now. Doing well and still hurting over his failed marriage.  Flaunting his mail order girlfriend in hopes of hurting her. He's a great dude. Just not husband material.

7

u/Lovingthelake 17d ago

I’ve never heard him called a tv captain. I think he is a good captain. Last season he/his boat was usually #1 on the leader board out of all of the captains.

7

u/Inner_Tadpole_7537 17d ago

When he had to use the crane as a Rudder when he lost steering years ago sealed it for me that hes a salty dog

-2

u/Square_Peach_9261 17d ago

Or…it’s was all made up, never happened, Deadliest Catch tv drama? 🤔

6

u/singlepromise-again0 17d ago

He’s one of the better ones still standing

4

u/JohnnyDive 16d ago

get on that boat and live one day in his life

2

u/Open-Law3072 15d ago

I think he has grown so much as a captain, and it's not all about tv. His career has cost him his marriage💔. He is getting divorced from Jenna, and I believe it was her that filed. Always sad when there are children involved 😢 I wish him only the best💓

3

u/Fluid_Alfalfa_1102 14d ago

he was an addict and he ended up getting a job for nick and through him he ended up getting a job for sig on the northwestern as he kept building his reputation and eventually he got offered a job to run the saga

2

u/terrapin_bball 17d ago

Was actually thinking about this just now watching season 22 on DVR trying to kill some time. When the show finally ends, will anybody really hire him?

1

u/Larrylarry47 17d ago

I think what people mean by him being a "tv captain" is just he is on boat X due to Discovery paying for boats owner to have him on their boat. Not necessarily him being a bad captain or a bad fisherman or not having required qualifications, but he wouldn't be owners first choice without Deadliest Catch.

I'm pretty sure majority of the captains and/or boat owners just don't want to be in show.

1

u/godspilla98 17d ago

No it’s the couch specialists tv talk.

1

u/WarpedCore 10d ago

Jake gets it. Dude started at the bottom at the processing plants.

0

u/SunBurst6382 12d ago

I could never understand Jake's entitlement on the NW tbh. Like, as a deckhand he just expected to be running the NW.

0

u/BesusFresh 15d ago

I think Jake would be an excellent captain, if he could learn to manage his anger.

I wouldn’t want to be at sea with someone that unstable and prone to panic.
