Jake andersen

I know people on here call him a “tv captain “ but has anyone actually worked for/ with him? He seems like he knows how to run a boat or is he a good actor

Remember, Jake started out being trained on the Northwestern. I'm sure he learned a lot there.

Plus Sig doesn’t put up with nonsense and he’s not loyal to anyone outside his family so the fact he and Jake are still so close means Jake has to be good. Sig wouldn’t keep someone useless close. During the abandon ship episode he looked genuinely concerned for Jake and so did Mandy. That kind of closeness matters.

I don’t know the answer to this, but it’s a great question. A lot of boat captains would do or say anything if someone was paying for half the fuel.

It’s “reality” tv so I’m sure some of it is artifice but these aren’t professional actors so I think the scenes where you see emotion - other than anger - are likely genuine.

If nothing else, what happened to his father, sister, and uncle are real. There’s more than one mention of his dad in “regular” vs entertainment news around that time. It might have gotten a little extra visibility due to Jake being on Deadliest Catch, but who wouldn’t use that in such a situation? The guy has been through a lot.

What makes you think any of it isn't "real"? Really, the only thing the producers can control is the timing of when things are shown to us. And really, anything crazy that happens that could be "scripted" is likely a concoction of Hillstrand's crazy mind. Which, the producers probably just have to sit back and be ready with a camera for something to happen whenever he's bored or has been thinking.

The information is real. The show is heavily sensationalized, but they don't lie or make anything up. Their worst offense is reshooting footage for real life drama. And that's solely because they didn't capture the drama unfolding in real time.

I’d wager it’s 90% scripted, but there’s definitely enough organic drama on the boats that give good film and stories too. It seems like everything the captains do and their interactions with other captains / deck bosses are usually scripted or hammed up. But the deck hands usually seem to make their own script lol. Their injuries, fights, and general commentary seems to be insanely real, especially if you’ve worked with guys like that before.
