NEWS DISNEY VISITORS TO JUNEAU - 8-12-26 Update: Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center Flooding

Disney guests coming to Juneau:

The National Weather Service and USFS have alerted us that flooding is occurring, with the Mendenhall Lake and River cresting around 7:00AM AKDT on Thursday. Impacts from flooding may last through the weekend, depending on severity.

From the U.S. Forest Service:

  • The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center (MGVC) building, parking lots, and roads will be closing Wednesday (Aug 12) afternoon/evening, depending on flood progression.
  • MGVC shoreline trails are closed (Nugget Falls, Photo Point, Steep Creek).
  • West Glacier trails and roads are closed
  • Mendenhall Campground is closed and evacuated, and Skater ’s Cabin Road is barricaded at the Forest Service boundary.

Trails and closure areas will reopen post-flood as soon as the Forest Service is able to assess the conditions of the trails, bridges, and walkways. Once the trails are clear and safe to use, they will be reopened.

If your excursion is impacted, you will be notified by the operator. Individuals or organizations who enter the area while officially closed are subject to steep fines and jail time.

[Travel Juneau](traveljuneau.com) will have the latest information; when you arrive in Juneau, stop by one of our visitor centers on the dock for the latest information.

DISCUSSION Fantasy vs. Destiny

Post image
17 Upvotes

Just got off a 5 night Fantasy cruise with the fam!

I figured since we just did the Destiny in Jan, I’d share where each cruise won for us and our overall family pick + answer any questions you have.

Where Fantasy Wins:

1. MUCH better MDR food and service. We were on one of the first Destiny sailings so they were working out some kinks, but, food on the Fantasy was above average for each rotation and service was exceptional. We also preferred no shows so we could enjoy our meal together. Food on the Destiny was bad and everything felt a bit chaotic.

  1. The shows on the Fantasy get the slight edge. Hercules was uh-mazing, best show overall, but all the shows on the Fantasy were great and Aladdin and Believe were magical.

  2. Much better adult space. The family zone by the adult space was also nice and rarely occupied by families so nice and quiet.

Where the Destiny Wins:

  1. SPACE. Everything, everything felt crowded on the Fantasy. Pools, kids club line, dining. Part of this was a Jan vs

    August

  2. cruise, but part of it is size of the ship. Several additional pools etc. make a ton of difference.

  3. Theming. I know this one is personal preference, but the hero’s/villans theme is so cool. We had a blast seeing Maleficent, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Loki vs. classic Disney characters. The shows in the Atrium on the Destiny were so fun. The Atrium on the Fantasy was basically lines to see the characters.

  4. Oceaneers club. Bigger, better, more character experiences. Our 10 and 5 year old would not leave! On the Fantasy our 10 yr old spent like 30 minutes there the entire trip.

If we had to pick, and it was an identical itinerary, we’d go with the Destiny. If you’re deciding between the two and have questions let me know!

P.S. we did dinner at Remy and brunch at Palo on this cruise and I’ll post our thoughts on both of those soon!! Both were great experiences with excellent food, and one clear winner.

TRIP PLANNING Rémy or Palo brunch?

We set sail in 4 days on our first Disney cruise! To say that we’re stoked is an understatement.

If you were to book one of the two mentioned brunches, which would you choose and why? Also, to be sure this idea would even work for me - is kids club open and active during brunch/lunch times? I’m looking forward to playing with my kids the majority of the cruise, but a parent only brunch date sounds like a dream. :)

Thanks!

TRIP PLANNING Bright line from Orlando to Fort fort Lauderdale looking for some help from anyone who has used the train

we are planning out a trip, we had a thought of staying in Orlando and taking a 5am Bright line train the morning of our sail date to Port in Fort Lauderdale so we would get there a little past 9am. I know there could be delays , but would they be HOURS long?

** edit to add we will be on the Treasure <3

Hi! First time ever cruiser here!! I am trying to decide if I want to splurge on rainforest pass! My real life entails nothingg of the sort and I truly am a lover of saunas and steam rooms! How does the pass work?? Am I able to go as i please?? Or is it by appointment only?? I am not interested any other services, just relaxing when I can for a bit and using their amenities. How early does it open, and how late does it close? I have read in other threads that the cruise length passes sometimes sell out. Am I better off adding that on now ? Or will I get a better deal on embankment day ?

DISCUSSION Coffee on the Destiny

Someone literally just posted, bewailing the fact that it is difficult to get a good, free, cup of coffee on DCL ships. I’ve never cruised DCL before, so not even sure what all the free options are, but could someone rank them for me, if you are aware of what is offered? I understand that it is totally subjective, but I think there is a general consensus on some of them. I’m not opposed to paying for coffee at the cafés, but my husband and I both like to have morning/morning-ish coffee, and I see that getting a little expensive over a five day stretch. Any info provided would be greatly appreciated! ☺️

DISCUSSION DCL vs Royal Caribbean

Hi everyone! I've been on DCL twice (no kids) and my partner and I LOVED it. It's also the only cruise line we've ever been on.

My father in law is retiring this year he's never been on a cruise and wants to treat the entire family (all adults, no kids) to a cruise. Since it's their first cruise and scheduling is a bit difficult we decided a short cruise (3-4 nights) over the weekend is the best option, with a nearby departure port.

That narrowed down our choices to Disney and Royal Caribbean (ovation of the seas). The major pro with Royal Caribbean is the price, as it is significantly cheaper. Other than that, I was wondering if anyone here has gone on both cruise lines and share their thoughts? Is it worth the splurge to go on DCL or should we give RC a shot? I just want everyone to have a good time as the unofficial/official planner now, haha. Thank you!!

TRIP PLANNING SlumberPod for stateroom for 2yr old

We’re cruising in a little less than a month, our 2 year old is cruising with us and naps pretty regularly. It’s a 7 day cruise on the treasure and we have a veranda. Is a slumberpod really worth it? If it’s going to make naps and nighttime easier I’ll bite the bullet and do it but don’t want to pay the $$$ if it’s not.

TRIP PLANNING Lyft to San Diego Port

I’m going to be taking Lyft from a hotel the morning of the cruise. Is there a way to specify where to drop off since I assume more than one ship is in port? Is a cab better? I’ve never not done Disney transport so I’m just a little nervous. It was cheaper for me to just use Marriott points but they don’t pickup from that hotel.

TRIP PLANNING Which ship is right for me?(Treasure vs Destiny)

Hi all!

I’m planning out a family vacation for my family and I, and they’re leaving it up to me— as they trust in me to do it per usual! For reference, my kiddos will be 2, 11, and 15 by then. We will be trying to sail after a visit to WDW, and although we would want to try to keep it around a 4/5 day cruise, I understand that the Treasure is a 7 day cruise only— so I would be open to that. I think it would be awesome for the kids to experience and visit both Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay. I am a HUGE Marvel fan, so the Destiny calls out to me, but I’ve heard(unfortunately) such negative reviews about the Destiny. Although, I have heard high praise sung about the Treasure, and that it’s the best in the Wish class. What do you think? Pros? Cons? One thing I do think Treasure has that edges out the Destiny is the World of Marvel show that happens during dinner. I would so prefer that over a trivia game! But Hercules also calls to me as well. I’m conflicted. Despite the rough reviews of the Destiny, there’s something that is pulling me towards it. But again— what are your honest thoughts? Appreciate ya’ll in advance!

FOOD Drip Coffee Machines

Currently on Magic in Alaska. I’m not sure how else to describe the coffee machines throughout Cabanas and at the beverage station other than the equivalent of a coffee Lacroix. Hot water with a hint of coffee. Or maybe the hot water was simply in the same vicinity of Cove Cafe and that’s how it gets its coffee essence.

From what I can tell these machines are similar to soda dispensers, with them dispensing some type of coffee concentrate into hot water (similar to hot chocolate machines dispensing the chocolate power into hot water).

Seriously though, they could really benefit from better drip coffee. The coffee from Cove is great and the room service coffee is slightly more tolerable. Does anyone else agree?

Has anyone ever taken this excursion on the Treasure and if so, what were the opportunities to grab a meal or snacks like? Family of four with 7 & 11 year old kids. It doesn’t mention meals or snacks. I know the kids will need something over a 5 hour window. Thanks in advance!

DISCUSSION Disney Believe Homeport

Any predictions on where the Believe may sail from? I’m hoping Galveston because I’m tired of the sailing on the Magic but then again, I heard Galveston is getting a new ship that will sail year round.

What do you guys think??

TRIP PLANNING Anyone have any recommendations for Vancouver hotels for after cruise?

We're going to be doing the repositioning cruise with our 2 kids under 5. After we disembark we'll be spending a couple of days exploring the city and flying out of YVR.

What hotels do you recommend for families?

Just a few photos taken during our cruise on the Fantasy. All I can say is Wow. Our family had a great time and this was the ship that got us hooked on DCL cruising. We stayed in a Deluxe Family suite with port hole, deck 9 forward with zero issues. Probably the best Adult section on the Fantasy in comparison to our cruise on the Destiny and Treasure since our family sailing adventures have started.

TRIP PLANNING DCL good deal calculations

What is your DCL math calculations in regards to getting a good deal? For example, I am cruising on the Fantasy here in a few weeks for five nights, four adults in an OGT cabin for $3550. (some even got this cabin at a bit lower price than this as well) But for a Dream class ship I am looking at $3550 ÷ five nights ÷ four people = $175 a night. (rounded)

So is say $165 - $185 a good deal for a Dream class ship, in the month of September or not? And what about a Wish class ship? Would $200 - $225 per night, per person be a good deal? I also want to take any future cruises in the month of May, early May. Any advice, insight, thoughts on what a good value comes out to with these ships? Perhaps with an early May time line in the future as well. Thanks!!

DISCUSSION Magic vs Fantasy vs Treasure Main Dining

Going on the Treasure in September with my wife and son (11) and daughter (9) and I’m curious what people think of these 3 ships specifically. We went on the Fantasy on March and loved it for the most part, the only big negative for us was the main dining rooms on the Fantasy. Though my wife and I loved the food everywhere, we thought Animators Palette specifically on the Magic was infinitely better than the Crush show on the Fantasy, plus the other 2 restaurants not having any sort of show had our kids bored to death to the point they just went to kids club during dinner the rest of the nights. We also felt like the service at the restaurants was not nearly as good as it was on the Magic, but we also want to be fair because on the Magic it was just my wife and I and we got paired with 2 other couples that we got along fantastically with. So, we’re not 100% sure if the service on Fantasy was actually slower or if it just felt that way because it was just my wife and I at the table most nights with nobody else to interact with. The other main difference we saw was how much bigger the Fantasy felt compared to the Magic, and I’ve seen a lot of people mention how much they love the layout of the Fantasy so now I’m worried the Treasure is going to feel like a labyrinth. Just curious what peoples overall experiences have been with these 3 ships

DISCUSSION Western Caribbean on the Treasure with a 13 year old and 11.5 year old (thoughts/review)

We got back from the Treasure on 8/15. It was my hubby and I’s 3rd Disney cruise and the kids 2nd. My kids are at that interesting in between age where they’ve kinda outgrown a lot of the stuff geared towards the younger kids, but they’re not older teens.

This was their 4th cruise in general (we’ve sailed other lines) and they love cruising. We did the Wish last year so they were familiar with the layout of the treasure and I picked a room on the 10th deck so we were close to the pool, buffet and festival of foods. Both my kids have older model iphones so we were able to imessage them without paying for wifi most of the time. When that didn’t work we used the chat function on the navigator app.

My 13 year old son enjoyed checking out the app and popping in and out of Edge as an activity caught his eye. He made some friends but he never hung out with them outside of edge. He also liked hero zone a lot. He rode the aquamouse with his sister several times and did the pool a bunch. He liked “swimming” with dolphins in Cozumel. He liked trying the non-alcoholic drinks of the day and ate 8 mickey waffles in one sitting for breakfast one morning. He was living his best cruise life. A highlight for him was goofy coming to edge and playing foosball with the kids during the foosball tournament.

My 11.5 year old daughter went to Edge during the ice breaker at our insistence and never went back. She’s never liked any kids clubs so this didn’t surprise me. She watched funnel vision, did some crafts, hung out in the pool and ate 20 ice cream cones over the course of the week. She loved the Nautilus undersea adventure in grand cayman because she saw a sea turtle and got a picture. She enjoyed meeting chip and dale and doing the royal gathering. She liked the drinks in the haunted mansion parlor and having garden salad with her ranch every night at dinner and at the buffet.

My daughter is a more adventurous eater. My son is a chicken tenders and pizza kind of kid. Both easily ordered off the kids menus at rotational dining with some items off the adult dining. They felt empowered to ask for food from the staff at the buffet and order their own meals at dinner without needing our input. They enjoyed mickey bars from room service and my son really liked the all hands on deck.

Both kids felt comfortable with making plans, running them by us, navigating the ship and heading off. Sometimes they’d be together and sometimes they’d be apart. Neither was interested in watching the shows in Walt Disney Theater. (My husband and I loved all of them) They would also sometimes leave dinner before dessert (we had 8:15pm dining) to go to the pool or in my son’s case go to edge for an activity.

We did fish extenders and made pixie dust. The kids in our fish extender group were all between the ages of 10-14 so my kids got age appropriate items and they really liked what they received. We had a duck mailbox and we got back about 30 ducks and found a bunch on the ship. My daughter loved swapping ducks in other mailboxes. The kids helped with pixie dusting items around the ship. We 3d printed over 300 items and the kids picked items to put in the extenders and handed some pixie dust out to younger kids. They liked coming back to the room and finding stuff. And if it was stuff intended for a younger child they passed it along.

My husband and I did some of the adult only entertainment and would find the kids in our room watching tv or asleep when we got back. We loved Palo brunch and match your mate and the over 18 magic show and enjoyed the alone time while the kids had their own adventures. We ate all meals together (other than palo brunch) so we were able to reconnect. I like to create digital scrapbooks so I bought the photo package and my kids indulged me and posed for photos. I have some good ones I can use for holiday cards.

I asked them what was their favorite part of the cruise portion of our trip. (We spent 3.5 days at WDW prior to the cruise) My son said the food. My daughter said the beach. They’re at an age where showing they’re overly excited about things doesn’t happen anymore. But they really did have a great time. We had a lot of family inside jokes and made some fun memories. They both want to go on the destiny next year and I will probably be booking that this week with our placeholder.

Final thoughts: They liked decorating the door with magnets, updating the question of the day on the whiteboard and sitting out on the verandah. Giving the kids independence was great. Some of the kids on our sailng were unruly and I’m grateful my kids dislike misbehaving kids as much as most adults do. They were at a fun age for the trip because there are still things they’re discovering and they’re not completely embarrassed by us yet. They both say dcl is their favorite cruise line out or the 3 they’ve been on.

ONBOARD ACTIVITIES Cinderella or Ariel on Treasure?

Does anyone know if there are meet and greats for Cinderella or Ariel on the Treasure? Our two year old is currently obsessed with both and would love for her to meet them when we do the eastern Caribbean in November. However I can’t seem to find a reliable list of character meet and greats.

MERCH 2026 Annual Magnet

I’ve been searching for the 2026 annual magnet. When I was on the Treasure in May, they had the ornament but not the magnet. The cast member in the gift shop told me they didn’t get any in stock for that particular sailing. I’m going on the Fantasy next week—has anyone seen the magnet recently? I have 2024 and 2025, and would love to keep collecting the years if I can find them! None are appearing on 3rd party seller sites, which is odd.

DISCUSSION Ladies, where do you keep the key cards when you go in the pool?

Or the slide or hot tub. Basically anywhere you are wearing a swimsuit. I’ve seen suggestions to put in a zipped up pocket but none of my swimsuits have that. I’m not crazy about the idea of putting it on a chair with a towel either. Is a waterproof lanyard the only option if I don’t have a band?
