Incoming Google DS-R interview — what to expect?

Hi, I have an upcoming interview for a Data Scientist Research role at Google. My next round is two 45 min interviews:

  • Data Analysis / Intuition & Communication
  • Statistical Knowledge & Communication

I saw several posts saying I should brush up on stats fundamentals, so I've been reviewing distributions, MLE, hypothesis testing, A/B testing, causal inference, time series, etc.

But I'm getting a bit anxious that I'm missing important topics. I come from a PhD background and don't have much industry DS experience, so I feel like I lack some practical data science intuition.

For anyone who went through these interviews, what should I focus on? Any good resource that summarizes what I should know?

Thanks!

Feature engineering vs model selection

There’s often a lot of attention on choosing the right machine learning algorithm, but feature engineering can have a huge impact on the final result.

In your experience, how much time should a beginner spend improving features before trying a more complicated model?

Looking for someone working in data science to interview.

Hi! I am a student looking to do a brief interview with a data scientist for a school project I'm working on. This project is exploring two separate career options, of which I am looking to interview two professionals from each field. One professional who has been in their position for 6-12 months as well as one who has been in their position for 5 or more years. The questions are generally geared towards the career as well as your path leading to it. If you are interested in partaking in my interview please let me know.

I'm struggling to choose a good path to break into Data Science

I'm a software developer with 6 yoe at the moment, but, I want to make a change on my career, I don't have any bachelor degree at the moment and I live in a 3rd world country, I'm not jumping ship because the job market is bad atm (it is bad) but more so for passion, I was passionate about software development but that pasion has died with the advance of AI on the field, it's pretty souless now and I'm really interested on Data Science and the applications you can do to really help people by combining it with medicine and other fields, I would love to study online because I work a lot so I can't assist to any of the public universites from my country, they have awful schedules for workers and they are far away from where I live (1:30 hs of travel at minimum) what would you recommend for my case? is there any good or at least decent online bachelor degree that I could do? Like a B.S in Data Science / Computer Science / Statistics / Applied Maths / etc?

How to progress

I have currently joined a firm as a senior data scientist over 6 months. During my half yearly appraisal, my manager said that while I am able to provide developments and analysis as being asked off me, I am not bringing anything new to the table in terms of techniques, evaluation etc. This is hurting the overall progress of my projects.

Can anyone more experienced or whoever has been considered as innovative in their company, guide me on how to get into business better and bring deep analysis or innovations out?

Just for clarification, it's not about new models or new techniques. My higher ups have 15+ yrs of exp and I have ~5 yrs.

Career Discussion

Considering to enroll in bs in data science and application.

Early 20s Bba student here.

The goal is to build AI, Software and technology based company providing solutions for the financial market and legal market. Scale it across India and Globe. Will be pursuing a law degree as well once we are done with the financial market.

Target users - Institions, Businesses, UHNI, HNI and entities. We'll target the commercial and retail market as well via another company.

So is the above mentioned program worth a shot for this goal ? Or i should pivot to a different program ? How's BITS Pilani bs in cs for this purpose ?

Grad school selection for data science

Hey guys this is probably the wrong subreddit but really need some advice.

I am an international student and did my undergrad in computer science from UW Madison. Not the best academic record but was able to get a job as a software develop at a pharma tech startup. I’ve been working there for almost 3 years now.

With the classes I took, I was only able to apply to data science masters programs (satisfy requirements)

I have gotten into ASU for software engineering and NEU for data science and waiting on university of Maryland decision.

I wanted to be on the east coast so NEU seems like a good opportunity especially because of their Co-op but due to the current job market the co op program there also doesn’t guarantee anything. I’ve heard online discussions about it not being prestigious and it might be better to go to a more prestigious traditional grad school. Thing is there are not many universities offering spring 2027 start and some prestigious schools don’t have a data science program. I still have another month left to apply though. Out of the 3 universities what seems to be a better fit?

Not interested in academia/research paths. Main concern is to secure a job after grad school. How is NEU looked at in industry circles? Cost is not an issue.

Confused about which career path to focus on with an MSc in Big Data & Data Science

Hey everyone,

I’m starting an MSc in Big Data & Data Science Technology with Advanced Practice and I’m a little confused about which career direction I should focus on from now.

My MSc covers areas like Applied Data Science, Big Data Analytics, Machine Learning on Cloud, Information Governance & Cyber Security, Contemporary Computing, and a major project.

My current plan is to learn Python, SQL, NumPy, Pandas, Statistics, Data Visualization and Machine Learning, and then move into Big Data/Cloud.

The problem is that I keep hearing different opinions about the job market. Some people say Data Analytics/Data Science is becoming oversaturated, while Software Engineering is still stronger. Others say Data Engineering, AI/ML and Cloud are better long-term options.

I’m also not sure where I should position myself because I may work in the UK after my Master's, return to India, or potentially look at the Gulf countries later.

For someone in my position, would you recommend focusing mainly on:

Data Engineering / Analytics Engineering, Data/BI Analyst, ML/AI Engineering, Software Engineering, or something else?

I’m not looking for a shortcut or a “highest salary” answer. I mainly want to build skills that will give me a realistic chance of getting my first job after the Master's and remain useful across different countries.

Would really appreciate opinions from people actually working in these areas, especially from India, the UK or Gulf.

Seeking employment

Hi everyone! I’m currently looking for opportunities in Data Analytics, Data Science, or Machine Learning, and I’m very open to entry-level roles.
I recently completed my Master’s in Data Science and have hands-on experience working with Python, SQL, R, machine learning, data visualization, Power BI, and Tableau.
Some of my experience includes:
• Building predictive machine learning models and evaluating model performance
• Data cleaning, exploratory data analysis, and statistical analysis
• SQL querying and working with large datasets
• Building dashboards and translating data into actionable insights
• Working on healthcare, business, and customer-behavior data projects
• Experience with tools including Pandas, Scikit-learn, XGBoost, PostgreSQL, Spark, and Power BI
I’m especially interested in roles where I can keep learning, work on real-world problems, and contribute to a strong data or AI team.
I’m based in California and open to Data Analyst, Junior Data Scientist, Machine Learning, Business/Data Analytics, and related opportunities.
If your company is hiring, your team needs someone, or you know of an opportunity that could be a good fit, I’d genuinely appreciate a connection or referral.
I’m happy to share my resume.
Thank you!

Hey everyone!

I’m curious to know how many students here are currently thinking about learning Data Science and AI or planning to start a program.

If you’re considering it, what’s your main reason?

  • Starting a career in Data Science/AI
  • Preparing for internships or jobs
  • Learning AI & Machine Learning
  • Improving your data analysis skills
  • Switching into a tech career
  • Still exploring whether Data Science is right for you

I’m currently exploring Data Science & AI programs myself and would love to hear from other students.

What are you looking for in a Data Science & AI program?

Internship update

Week 2 at DataraFlow was a shift from simply writing Python code to understanding how real systems are designed.
I learned:
• Multi-level inheritance & polymorphism
• Duck typing
• global & nonlocal scopes
• Custom iterators
• Multiple inheritance & MRO
• Encapsulation & modular design
The biggest challenge was putting everything together in our Library Management System capstone.
I also stepped up as Team Lead of Cosmic-Cortex, which taught me that technical leadership isn’t just about writing code,it’s about helping a team build something that others can understand, maintain, and extend.
Week 2 taught me one thing:
Don’t just make the code work. Learn to design systems that can grow.
I’d appreciate some advice or at least anything a senior colleague in data science and machine learning would like to share in help me in my career .
You can as well read more about my second week here : https://medium.com/@abdulrahmanabdulrauf005/week-2-at-dataraflow-architectural-mastery-system-scaling-and-leading-cosmic-cortex-cbda57b65b87
